I consider this performance a masterpiece for the following reason: The short and clean note without vibrato (2:28) makes it seem like he’s breathless and brings a very emotional character to the end of the piece.
The main thing is it being short, at least for me. Notice how the strings sound very clean. Vibrato was only carefully used in the baroque period, unfortunately many who interpret the pieces don't pay attention to that.
Ironic that it was likely a mistake, based on his reaction afterwards... But, that's WHY this piece is notable. Thousands sing it perfectly, but add some originality and you stand out from the rest.
I don't have any way of knowing how true it is, because prior to recording, it is not possible to verify just how music sounded, but I have heard a plausible theory that vibrato only came into prominent use because early recording techniques had a lot of pitch variation, and it was a way of making it less distracting
I had a wonderful woman friend of many years who died every early of cancer and during her last weeks we listened to this every time I visited her - our favourite piece by anybody. She was an ex-chorister. I still listen to it once a week or so with tears every time.
That note at 2:23 is heavenly, and here Scholl really makes the difference with other interpretations as he uses no vibrato and finishes the note early and very neatly, thus giving the impressions he is breathless at the end of this note which brings the emotion to its fullest. Probably the best version of this piece.
It struck me, and was almost jarring at first. I wanted it to go on.....indefinitely, haha. But as I have listened to it again, I think it was a master stroke. It accents the entire rest of the piece, and brings it to a new level. Outstanding. This man can't make a bad recording.

@@fuferito Thank you so much for this interesting, important information about which I had no idea - but we live and learn. He may fool a few into not recognising him as Superman, by changing his hair-style and wearing spectacles, but changing his name to Andreas Scholl to hide his identity as Clark Kent in order to test his chances at a new career as a singer, rather than a mild mannered reporter - sorry Mr Kent it is not that easy...but good luck with the singing.
@@davidbrown8763, Can't say I blame the guy. Print is dead and reporters have lost credibility; this new path may save him from within, after all the times he has saved us.

I come back to this heavenly piece every few month just for ending up listen to it uncountable times in a row. It's so delightful and fragile. So gentle. Just a masterpiece. Andreas Scholl did an outstanding job.
Thank you, Andreas -- and these marvelous instrumentalists, the skilled recording techs, the reach of UA-cam, and the enduring spirit of GFHandel -- for bringing this exquisitely beautiful and deeply moving composition to us! Many times, when I allow this to flow over and through me after a stress-promoting day, the very palpable calming change in my body illustrates just how easily I can allow unhealthy tension to accumulate like background noise. Calm blessings to all. "Tomorrow's mastery begins with mental calm today."
The first time i saw him...was in Rodelinda ...a tv broadcast from Glyndebourne...and i read a review a couple of days later saying of Scholl 'time stood still' ...it really did.

This is heavenly and we are fortunate to have this recording, for this too shall pass. There is only this life and we must relish every beautiful sound, every lovely sight, every wonderful moment. We must not waste our time dreaming of some mythiical return to a nonexistant paradise.
I'm not sure about the God and heaven thing but our large cortex is a recent evolutionary jump and it's this part of the brain which appreciates melodies, rhythms, poetry and art. In the future we could imagine beings with a much greater cortex or cortex like functions, perhaps some kind of super AI or enhanced human, that could experience things literally beyond our imagination.
Nine years ago, Mr. Scholl performed a recital on the UC Berkeley campus. Cal Performances made the mistake of booking him in the huge Zellerbach Hall. As a result, there was a large no. of unsold seats so at the last minute, they made tix available at no charge! I sat in the 5th row and saw Mr. Scholl sing six gorgeous Handel arias, including this aria and my favorite from Saul, "O Lord whose mercies numberless". It was the best bargain of my life!
I come back to this recording time again. The music, the voice: nothing less than exquisite! One of the most beautiful pieces of music written and one of the most beautiful voices singing! Bravo!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
So beautiful and profound work. It makes us remember those we loved and those who are gone. Normally, it is accompanied with some tears from our eyes...

@@davidbrown8763,
Can't say I blame the guy. Print is dead and reporters have lost credibility; this new path may save him from within, after all the times he has saved us.
Clark Kent seems to be everywhere these days, even as a German ice hockey player. (Look up Uwe Krupp.)
@@DeltaSilver88 Well spotted! Like I said, seems to be no end to his talents. It is clear to me that he has had enough of The Daily Planet and is serious about trying alternative careers. However, I am a bit worried about him settling on ice hockey. If, during a game, he should ever forget that he is only pretending to be someone else, other than Superman, people could get seriously hurt!
A divine voice of other-worldly grace and perfection! No other contemporary counter-tenors come anywhere close to his remarkable quality!
The most beautiful male rendition of this piece😢
The first time i saw him...was in Rodelinda ...a tv broadcast from Glyndebourne...and i read a review a couple of days later saying of Scholl 'time stood still' ...it really did.
the first tone of his voice, absolute divine and pure. So breath taking.
Il brano indica tutta la tristezza per la creazione della vita che dovrà finire per colpa della morte e rivendica tutta ľinnocenza di tutta la biosfera.Bravissima a rivendicare tutta questa tristezza.
Have never heard of this artist before. What a divine voice. Something somehow different from all the other fabulous counter tenors I love... I will look for his recordings/repertoire.
Thanks UA-cam.!
Una voce cristallina che riesce a mantenersi tale in ogni modulazione melodica e dotata di grande expressio quasi avesse immiato il tema musicale. Impressione di grande e sorprendente naturalezza nella esecutività canora.Indubbiamente MOLTO Bravo. BIGHIN GIULIO RENZO
What a feeling it must be to have that sound come out of your body!
I just read that this song was the very first piece of music EVER to be played over the radio in 1906!!
+Scott Hartman Quite a difference from the crap that gets played these days.
Just think, it might be the first song from our world to be heard in another.
@@billyboyjones5746 I really hope so.
Fantastic choice!
Seems you’re right. Here’s a recording of the broadcast

wundervoll, so schön, so zart, so hell, so klar und doch so gehaltvoll,Seelen berührend und Herz öffnend Einfach wunderbar
I was so happy to listen him alive in Estonia! I was sitting in front... and as a singer in choir it was most usefull to see when he takes breath... how he keeps posture. It is all just perfect! He is taking so pure high notes like without effort... hi sings without pressure! ... he reminds me Georg Ots... from different voice group of course. My deepest love and respect! Rauno Th
Ps. You cant forget his voice, when you have heard it! Close to the phenomen of Farinelly. Sry.
... and i have listened it more than 12 times in row! How beautiful it can be? Bravo!
How lucky u are!! Wow I wish I can hear him live!
EXQUISIT !!! Such controlled sensitivity.
EPITOME of musicality & baroque.
Stays in your heart ... FOREVER !!!
Many thanks, just beautiful, his voice is a gift from God! Sublime...
if mortals can sing this good, I wonder how heaven will sound like.
Heaven will sound..*snicker* like heaven!!
there is no such thing as heaven but in this world. love life the way it is
This is heavenly and we are fortunate to have this recording, for this too shall pass. There is only this life and we must relish every beautiful sound, every lovely sight, every wonderful moment. We must not waste our time dreaming of some mythiical return to a nonexistant paradise.
Is Clark Kent a mortal?
Das Genie dient den Herzen. Dank!
Voz extraordinária, límpida, muito bem colocada, sem esforço....Bela voce....
This is so lovely. I could listen all day.
This is the best performance of Ombra mai Fu i have found.
A very delightful rendition of this Handel classic and in the countertenor, so masterfully and beautifully sung to be the envy of angels.
Cet immense chanteur est magnifique, quelle pureté, c'est un bonheur sans pareil de l'écouter. Merci Merci
Cette voix du cœur ! O dio mio ! Gracié mille! Frederico.

One of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard. Thank you UA-cam, as I’d never have heard it without you.
Göttliche Perfektion - tiefste Liebe & Leidenschaft zu Musik - im Universum wird es nie etwas schöneres geben als Händel & Bach!
His lightness of touch and control is exquisite!
I have nothing but to admire his beautiful voice. Bravo!
Such restraint, such delicacy, reverence for the subject...gives me chills
I come back to this recording time again. The music, the voice: nothing less than exquisite! One of the most beautiful pieces of music written and one of the most beautiful voices singing! Bravo!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Extraordinary performance! Full of emotion... 😢
So beautiful and profound work. It makes us remember those we loved and those who are gone. Normally, it is accompanied with some tears from our eyes...
Such a beautiful redition of this divine aria by Handel.
Such a beautiful performance, definitely my favourite of all the versions I've heard. He has such control of his voice, gorgeous phrasing and tone, everything!

Non sempre il timbro dei controtenori mi convince, ma questa performance di Scholl è sublime.
2:38 that smile says it all. Simply the best, Bravo Sir Scholl!
