    Not all shoulder exercises are created equal, at least not if you value the health of your rotator cuff muscles. In this video, I show you a classic shoulder exercise and staple of most shoulder workouts, and how to perform it correctly if you want to avoid the hazards to your rotator cuff when doing it. The side lateral raise or dumbbell side raises are a great medial delt developer. The problem isn’t with the exercise, but how you perform this shoulder exercise.
    The most common tip you hear when performing this in your shoulder workout is to tilt your pinkies up at the top of the movement as if you are “pouring a pitcher” of water. This is bad advice. No way around it. Especially considering the fact that you can still get the benefits of the exercise without doing this by making one simple tweak to your posture when performing this exercise.
    To begin with, the combination of elevation and internal rotation at the shoulder is a biomechanically unsound position for your glenohumeral joint. Can your body do it? Of course, with the almost limitless range of motion provided by the ball and socket joint of your shoulder you can get in almost any position. This doesn’t mean that it is a good position however.
    When you elevate your arm with an internally rotated shoulder you place the head of the humerus in a position where it can quickly impinge on the soft tissue structures in your glenohumeral joint. Most often, the supraspinatus tendon is one of the first structures to feel the brunt of this mistake. Now, the individual anatomy from shoulder to shoulder is going to vary, and the speed at which you start to experience troubles from this position may vary widely.
    That said, over the course of time, even those who find the position to be non problematic (even for many years) start to experience breakdown after years of doing this. On the other hand, issues can arise much faster if you have a shoulder with a lower hanging acromion which tends to get pinched faster by the upward rising humerus.
    The point is, the pouring the pitcher posture is quickly going to accentuate this improper biomechanics position at the shoulder and lead to accelerated degeneration in your shoulder. Not needed since the fix is to simply do the opposite at the shoulder joint when you perform the shoulder exercise - externally rotate your shoulder. By doing this, you provide all the room your shoulder needs to avoid the impingement while not compromising the work done by the medial deltoid. How you ask?
    By simply leaning forward just a bit at the waist when doing this exercise to place the medial deltoid in a more direct line of force opposing gravity. This now allows you to make the exercise safe for your shoulders and allow you to use it to get the bigger shoulders you are doing it for in the first place. Watch as I demonstrate how to perform the side lateral raise the right way to build big shoulders and delts without suffering a shoulder injury in your workout.

      @@fact_frenzy386 x don't feel too bad... I have been doing this wrong for over 30 years in my left shoulder has been giving me problems right in the area he's talking about just from doing regular dumbbell press is above the head so I'm going to try to learn more about this and watch more of his videos Maybe there is some hope for me. It's weird because sometimes my shoulder bothers me and other times it doesn't and I think some of it has to do with the way I sleep. I sleep on my side and I just read somewhere where that is really bad for your shoulders when you go to work out the shoulder and side that you sleep on supposedly always suffers and you will have problems so I am trying to sleep on my back which is very difficult for me this is a very frustrating situation and not enough discussion about it especially as it relates to bodybuilding just wanted to bring that up maybe that might be something of interest to you as well we have to look out for each other because the corporation's just selling a supplements don't really give a rat's ass about what happens to us in the long run if they did they would ban steroids and be realistic about all of this and make everything natural so anyway I digress good luck with your situation! I had rotator cuff surgery in the early 90s and "empty beer can" was one of the PT exercises given at that time. After watching this and doing some easy research, it seems that in the early 2000s there was additional research done that shows that thumbs down is bad, thumbs up is good. So a big "thumbs up" to Jeff Cavaliere!

      Broseidon of The Brocean what do you mean feels natural? nothing that occurs during physical training is natural outside running (fight/flight). you can deadlift, squat, or perform a plethora of exercises in which don't hurt but are doing it 100% wrong.

    • @justinf5422
      @justinf5422 9 років тому +16

      D Nedo First of all, wrong person. Secondly, wtf did I just read? When you pick something off the ground, is it not in a deadlift motion? When you lift something over your head, is it not an overhead pressing motion? When you hunch down and get back up, is that not squatting? Yet you're trying to say that refining the motion so you don't injure yourself isn't natural? Cavemen had to lift rocks, animal carcasses, wood and anything else that they needed to survive that day, EVERY DAY. Lifting is as natural as breathing. What's not natural is sitting on your ass all day on your computer ranting over the internet about how one of mankinds most basic survival skills isn't natural.

    • @dcnedo
      @dcnedo 9 років тому +3

      Broseidon of The Brocean have no idea how/why I replied to you. good points, but I disagree. yes, humans have to lift heavy things, but when is the last time you had to pick up and move a 405 pound couch? or lift a 185 pound box to place over the fridge? cmon, man.....the moves may be natural in the fact we can move in that way but to do it in the way we do as lifters/body builders/bros/gym rats....is not natural. if it were natural , everyone would have nice leg definition from using the stairs

    • @justinf5422
      @justinf5422 9 років тому +4

      D Nedo I had to move an armoire just a few days ago lol.... Lifting is completely natural, whether it be 2 pounds or 200. It just depends on what's in front of you. You think the cavemen looked at a rock and were like, "you know what, that's way too heavy to be natural... I don't think I'm going to be lifting that as a result"? Just because something has been refined and products made specifically for it, doesn't change the fact that as humans, we needed these movements and still do to survive. As I said before, it's humans lifestyle that doesn't involve any physical movement whatsoever, is what is totally unnatural.

      It's simply that our joints are designed to twist and move in very specific ranges of motion. If you move them in a way they're not designed to they grind against tendons and bones and over time you wear the joint out. It's like any piece of machinery its designed to do a very specific job, use it in a weird way long enough and you'll break it.

    I'm 71. Just watched your video, so easy to follow and understand. I tried it to compare the mechanics of it to the old popular way. FANTASTIC! I can say this because in my line of work it best to be in shape for the unexpected. Over the years I've been put back together many times. Last winter I destroyed my shoulder again and detached my bicep. Making this my 8th rotator cuff operation. Anxious to get back in shape this video has helped tremendously! THANK YOU.

    Thanks Jeff! I was doing it the wrong way (pinky up) after a trainer at my gym showed me this technique, if not for you I would probably be still doing that and slowly destroying my shoulders. Made me realize that even if someone is a trainer and looks great doesn't mean he knows about everything. Now I always research how to do exercises correctly instead of blindly trusting strangers just because they have more experience than me.

Everything was secure and in good shape. No weird smells. The weight changing mechanism is really smooth and straight forward. Changing weight is really fast and easy. Though the handle is plastic, I don't think it will be breaking anytime soon. So far pretty impressed after my first session with them. I was afraid they were going to be too wide at first, but I didn't have any issues with them while doing upright rows.

NOBODY ever explained this to me, but it makes perfect sense! I appreciate your sound advice now more than ever! I first noticed an issue in my left shoulder during a bench press about 7 months ago which progressively became more painful even with light exercise. I'm definitely not in peak condition. (51 years old) but I've been physically active (weight resistance and cardio for about 25 years now.) My MRI indicated increased edema at the acromioclavicular joint, and I definitely have and feel tendon impingement. I had definitely lost muscle mass and motivation as I'd been in pain avoidance mode for about 6 months. This obviously also affected my sense of optimism and mental well being.
    By following your videos specifically on shoulder stretching/ strengthening with proper form, I've been able to resume light weight training and body weight excercises. I've had to re-learn how to train smarter. I believe I'm well on my way thanks to you sir!

  • @tapolna

    4:20 This is high power stuff: we want externally rotate the shoulder to clear the head of the humerus from the acromion which compresses against the supraspinatus tendon when we have impingement. Google "images of the glenohumeral joint" for illustrations to pinpoint and see what Jeff is talking about.
    Wikipedia "acromion" has a simple illustration of this boney extension of the scapula bone. There are different types of acromion: flat inferiorly, curved, hooked and convex. Over 50% of us have the curved type but only 3% of us have the convex type. Most rotator cuff tears occur among flat type; next common were among the curved type, according to a study of over 90 such injuries in 2002. But this isn't the last word on this ongoing study of the subject.
