Don't worry, and allow your self to work slow but steady. I find your editing skills brilliant, and if you do a little every day you will get there . I am a bumbling sailor too , and I also enjoy a daily pint of beer. So bumble on and don't take any s#@t from all the perfect sailors with their fancy ideas .
Cheers mate, I appreciate it!
Amen! Same here. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time... The boat to-do list is never ending but it's all part of the fun!
Your welcome mate, I'm glad it will help you out. A anchor, and rode is so critical.
Definitely! Thanks again!
I'm honestly surprised you got that chain out they way you did. When you first pointed the camera at the pile I thought it was just one solid lump of rusty metal. I figured that you would need to remove it from the anchor and then lift it all out and carry the lump through the interior of your boat and drop it off the side from the cockpit. Hope you took some time to treat your self a little on you birthday instead of just working all day. Looking forward to seeing you in the water and moving under the power of the wind.
That was option B! 😂. I just worked, but that's also enjoying myself 😂
I like that you tied a string to your wrench. Here's a suggestion for when the boat is back in the water and you need to do some work above deck. Get yourself an old umbrella with a hooked handle. You can hang it from your life line wherever you're working and have a better chance of catching that wrench, or pin, or block before it hits the water. Doesn't always work perfectly but it improves your odds.
Good idea. It's amazing how trained drill bits come out of the chuck and do a bounce and triple forward somersault over the side. Along with my glasses and my friends 2 iPhones.
Nice!
Genius
I am really enjoying your videos. I’m headed over to patreon now! I really hope to see you sail this sailboat to the Caribbean. I have a 25 ft Bayfield (made in Canada). I will sail to the Bahamas to say hello WHEN you make it there.
Thank you! I'll see you there!
What a glorious mop of hair! Thanks for the shout out, T 😁
Meh.
With mixed chain and warp, you divide the length by 6, rather than by 4, so you'll be able to anchor in 13.3m.
Cheers, good enough for now!
Happy belated birthday! That mate of yours deserve a ruddy big gong for what he did for you! Still love your videos and your quirky sense of humour more all the time. You do your thing, and bugger the rest! All the best!
Thanks!
Tery, great stuff. I really enjoy the channel. You can't go wrong with a Contessa! I bought a Contessa 32 a year ago and am thrilled with the boat. You mentioned in one of your earlier videos how Tania Aebi was an inspiration to you. Well, interestingly, she was a previous owner of my boat. These boats are amazing! Keep up the great work - I'm learning all kinds of stuff!
Thank you! That's amazing about Tania Aebi! I absolutely adore the 32 and if I'm ever in a financial position to upgrade my boat, the 32 is the one. Thanks for watching!
You may be bumbling along but you’re bumbling all in the right directions. Get yourself a second anchor too. If there is any 5 or 6 meters of that old chain halfway worthy, you can use it on the second anchor with new/used anchor rode. You must have a backup. Bumble on sailor.👍
Hi, I've got 3 anchors total already. Cheers!
Love the logo by the way.
Cheers!
Happy birthday, you did the right thing asking Jimmy Green for advice, something we all have made the mistake of not doing and ending up with the WRONG THING ! So your honesty / humility does you a favour there, cheers John
Cheers John!
Birthweek is not a week for jobs 👍 Happy birthday 🍻
Thank you! It definitely isn't!
Love all the technical terms.
😂😂😂
You need a drain in that anchor locker and change the bulkhead to a sealed unit with a big sealed portal l- keep the smell out and the locker dry.
All in hand, cheers.
Another awesome video 🎉🎉🎉
Unhook chain from anchor, get bucket, lift anchor chain into bucket. Drop in skip.
Happy birthday bud, love your raw footage and man vs life. ; }
Cheers mate, wish I'd thought of that, but I love punishing myself 😂
I donno know why I liked the anchor locker and chain removal bit SO much ... prolly 'cause you were doing it instead of me 🙂
Definitely! Although I wish you were doing it! 😂
Too late to help you out, but what I did to replace my anchor chain and rode was haul a 5 gallon bucket into the vee berth, undid the chain from the anchor and pulled it through into the chain locker, and put it all into the bucket to haul it out of the boat. It made a minimal mess in the vee berth from the rust and gunk flaking off as I put it into the bucket, but that was easy to clean up. When I was ready to install the new chain, I dropped a rope with a weight on it down the hole, and used it to pull the new chain up. Just thought I'd mention it, in case someone else out there is in a similar situation.
Really enjoying the videos, always brightens my day to see you pop up in my feed. It's great to see the improvements in both the boat and the videos each week. It is amazing how many people are able to support the brave souls like you that are working towards your dream. I like the new logo, and loved the new outro for the video. Best wishes for your boat launch that should be happening very soon (or maybe already has, I forget the date you mentioned for it). Looking forward to seeing the trip and your continued efforts to improve the boat and learn to sail it.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I'll splash on the 8th Feb. Looking forward to it!
That chain brought back so many memories of my brothers boat which I fixed up. His chain was rusted solid, I had to smash the links apart with a hammer. It took me 3 hours to remove 55m of 8mm chain !
Ooosh, luckily mine wasn't that bad! 😂
Wow man! I know it was your birthday an all but if you didn't spend two whole days sitting around yanking your chain you might have actually accomplished something worthwhile! 😉👍 your channel rocks my friend!
😂😂😂 Yanking my chain is worthwhile!
Well done Terry, It’s a dirty job, but somebody’s got to do it 😂😂😂
Aye, unfortunately it was me 😂
hehe, in a previous video i made a comment about youtube overlaying links at end of videos... your outro is perfect :P
😂😂😂
Happy belated birthday 🎉 love ur content!! Keep it up
Thank you!
Happy Birthday to you , glad to see you getting the jobs done and got the prop coupling done (not the most easy job) I don't think when they build a boat they ever think how on earth your suppose to be able to get at anything or able to see what your trying to do ! , soon you will have a nice clean chain locker to be proud of and another mucky job out the way , its always amazing how a boat yard full of people becomes deserted when you put your head outside to see who can give you a hand ,and when you have finished they tend to appear out the woodwork with plenty of advice on how it should be done
Keep plodding on you are doing well 👍👍.
😂😂😂 Exactly! Cheers!
My birthday week too !
Happy birthday week!
If you haven't already, smother that new coupler in grease, or it'll look like it came off the titanic in a matter of weeks
It already does 😂😂
Good on ya Tery! Keep plugging away, the ocean is calling! Great video
Cheers mate!
Happy Birthday Mate! Looks to me you were having a great time on the boat. The tube where the anchor rode/chain passes through the deck is called a spurling pipe btw. Hawsepipe is a hole in the hull where the anchor stock passes through to "hawse" or stow the anchor. Usually in larger yachts or ships. Great content! Cheers!
Excellent! Thanks for letting me know! Hardest thing so far is getting to grips with the terminology. Thanks for watching!
it's nice to see you have a breakaway rope on your chain remember to fit some new rope as sometime in the future if the anchor gets stuck at the bottom you have to be able to cut it away that's what the rope is for you probably already know this anyway lol but I see many who just use chain and I think do they know what's in stall for them when their anchor has stuck anyway a belated happy birthday terry 21 again then lol so all the best from john from Rugby UK.
👍
Happy Birthday 🎂. The numbers on your new anchor chain and warp all sound good to me. 12 meters of 8 mm chain with 68 meters of 12 mm warp for a total of 80 metres seems like a good rig for a 26 footer. Your getting there. All the best. Time for a bevvie. 🐟 😁
Cheers!
Rust, mold, and head bumps. Yep, definitely a DIY boat channel 😂😂
😂😂😂 Definitely!
Happy Birthday 🎉 beer o'clock mate 🧉
Definitely! Thank you!
Have a couple on me
Thank you so much! I bloody need a coupe! 😂
Ground tackle will be fine thats pretty much what I use on my slightly larger boat. I like a bit more rope, though we regularly anchor in deeper water here in New Zealand (I have a deck windlass though).
I may end up with more rope in the future, things are tight right now though 😂
Happy Birthday
Cheers!
Thanks
Thank you!
Happy birthday!
Thank you!
You must clean that Anchor locker!
👍
Damn it's negative 20 f in Maine and you have grass all around
Yip, no snow so far here.
Belated happy birthday 🎂🥳 from me, lucky 🐕and Ingrid ⛵
Thank you!
Merch ideas: Hat, hoodie, Hammer, swear jar, screwdriver punch………
😂😂😂 I'll get on it!
Jimmy did you right. Keep an eye out for a different anchor though, Can get a Bruce real cheap and they have done me well. My concern for you is that headstay chainplate. Gotta keep the chain away from that. That is the most important chainplate on the boat and doesn't look good. That hardware is the weakest link in your whole adventure. I'd say have a rigger or old salt, take a peek at it while you have it exposed.
I'm gonna have a good look at it. An anchor may be on the list one day!
Happy birthday! Looked like a fun day 😅
Thank you! It was type 2 fun. The kind you only enjoy afterwards 😂
@@BumblingSailor haha, well it will be satisfying when it's all cleaned up and full of new chain and rope!
I hope so! 😂
Happy birthday buddy, it was mine the other too, ont 1st, not a single pint to be had anywhere….offshore life sucks at times
Ugh, at least my dry birthday was self inflicted 😂
How did you manage to pull the chain out without cursing. Happy Birthday
I cut that bit out 😂
I second the comment from Dave about erm coffee erm tea it's great seeing your channel grow so quickly well done mate
Thanks!
Keep up the Bumbling I enjoy this channel very much.....
Thank you!
Happy Birthday Captain, oh you did make me laugh so much when you opened up this episode. Greta show as always, love the Errs (even got to count them now, just like I did at school if I realised the teacher was saying the same thing all the time like 'You know'. Funny though that the latest catch phrase is "Does that make sense?". Just an off-piste observation.
Hey but I'm greatly concerned at the 'Black Mould' in your boat, you need to prioritise it's removal particularly if you are sleeping/ living onboard. can you imagine that stuff living in your lungs?
First - get rid of it - Its a living thing so use Anti-Mould spray or BIOLOGICAL Hand Wash liquid and scrub the stuff off all surfaces. Be sure to wear a mask and cover your skin. Wash affected area with mild soapy solution and dry using a blower heater.
Second - Treat the area - Paint it with a gloppy coat of white Bilge and Locker Paint - I prefer the Hempel Bilge & Locker Paint - Make sure the area is well ventilated - dry using a Blower Heater
Prevention - Consider applying self adhesive non hydro-absorbent insulation to the external walls and ceiling - no less than 12mm thick, but thicker is better
Finish - Consider a lining, self adhesive car carpet is quite good as is some Faux Leather /vinyl coverings - use treated hard wood strips to secure the ceilings - to do a first class job you should profile some plywood sheets, cover with vinyl and attach using 3M 50mm wide industrial Velcro, again trim using treated hard wood strips.
absorption
I'll look into it, cheers!
happy birthday big fella loving the vids will get a mug on pension day
Thank you!
Moving ahead. Happy birthday
Thank you!
Bit late to tell you this but it's much easier to go inside and smack the rusty chain with a metal bar and hammer to loosen it up
Yeah, I always have to find out the hard way 😂😂😂 thanks for watching!
fuck yeah, Teslah! you weren't wrong when you said the chain was knick knack a noodled!
Not half man!
When is splash day? Happy birthday belated.
Thanks! Wednesday.
Happy belated Birthday 🎂🎁🎉🍻🍻🍻
Thank you!
Have you checked out Wave Rover? He did a great job refitting a C26.
Yeah, love his channel.
Happy birthday to you mate enjoyed the video
Thank you!
Happy Birthday!!
Thanks!
Happy belated birthday mate! If somebody had told me i'd be watching a hairy northener yanking his chain for 5 minutes this Sunday - i'd haver told 'em .... well.. Anyway, turned out some good info on the chain, rode/rope 🤷♂, and how much it costs! - best get that 10 pint session for this afternoon out of my head then.... Cheers!
😂😂😂 Aye, it's an expensive bit of kit! Just have 9 pints, it'll be reet.
@@BumblingSailor Haha yeah fair play - that's what i done :) - As this is in a 'sub feed' - i mentioned a few vids ago i'm doing a similar thing to you - got a boat never sailed putting on youtube. Mines different to yours as it's a classic wooden, (i look at you and think - i should have probably done that) - anyway, it's called ' saving susanna' on UA-cam if you want to watch someone else "having a go" - not shilling to ya, just if you want to see. Cheers!
Well done fella 👍😀
Cheers!
Just think a cup with . ERM COFFEE or ERM TEA printed on it 😂👍
😂😂😂 Might be my next design! 😂
I smoke one fat joint per project , and then another one mid project to calm the phuk down 😶🌫️🥴
😂😂😂
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👍
Not sure if this is a helpfull suggestion, but maybe mount your camera and just record when working and splice clips together and Edit your commentary over the clips.
If you can manage it after painting your "chain locker" Think about a false bottom above where your drain hole is so the chain does not block the hole.
Have you noticed any leaks in your boat deck?
I suggest if you can moving somer of the stuff off the boat to make room for repairs until Sails and such are ready to be put on the boat and ready to mast them. Working with all that clutter is not going to get easier.
Keep your chin up Mate, you will get there.
Not really any option. I live and work on the boat.
@@BumblingSailor I hear you man, just keep doing your thing and stay up beat on the progress you make day to day. You will get there.
Hello Mate ....Happy Belated Birthday ...mine was 1 Feb...
Looks like you are nearly ready to get in the Water...
I was wondering if you might do better with a bit more chain...why 12 m ...is that an original spec for the boat ..?
I got 30 m on mine ...has come in handy on a few anchorages....on shore wind and big swell...
Spec for the boat. In fact, over spec. Need to keep the weight out of the bow.
I've watched and enjoyed all your videos and never commented or donated. Putting both things right now. C26 is a lovely boat! I wonder what the Red Dragon was doing in the forepeak?
Thank you! The red dragon is painted on the top of my windvane for some reason 🤷
@@BumblingSailor It will bring you luck in Welsh waters. We won't fire at you. Pass, friend. 🤣
Thank eff for that, I've got enough against me 😂
RESPECT!!!
😎
Maybe now its a good time to remind you of all the video's i made. 😉
Ooh you had your birthday, congrats!
😂😂 Thank you!
Nice good idea about 3 pounds
We'll see if anyone actually buys anything 😂
Life is full of "character building" jobs in my experience. My character should be gigantic! Looking forward to the next one mate. I need to be getting on with my own boat resto (and finishing my house build and and and ad infinitum).
p.s. how does one by a mug from you?
There's a link to shop thing in the description called 'merch'. There's all different designs on there. Thank you!
@@BumblingSailor yeah I checked after I messaged. Never a good policy. So you only get 3 quid per mug sold or did I hear you wrong?
@@allanwood3562 the camping mugs is around £3 at the moment, the contrast mugs and stuff is about 5. Hoodies and stuff goes up to about £9.5. The minimum is £3 per item. Apart from stickers which is about £1.80 or something. I think. I can't quite remember. 😂
Belated Happy Birthday mate. Get the old chain weighed in... it'd probably still have done t' job after a tow behind your car but nice to have new stuff!
If I had a working car I'd have tried it 😂.
@@BumblingSailor oh crap..... forgot 🙄 sorry!
@@BumblingSailor have a kebab on me mate.
Soon be Bish Bash Splosh!
Thanks so much!
Happy birthday have a great day, how are you going to retrieve the anchor and chain by hand or motor?
Cheers. By hand.
@@BumblingSailor
Well when things pick up consider a windlass anchor motor one day!
Maybe one day!
Quicky put a link to patreon on your about you mate.
It's all in the description, but put it on the about page now also. Cheers.
Hey Terry. Long time no speak. Great vlog can you weigh the old chain in for scrap?
To save me scrolling back through everything did I remember you saying you had taken your ‘radio course’ if so did you do it at the Marina?
I’m thinking of getting back into boating so need to tick that off the list.
I did it at seahaven marine, just round the corner. Great place. I'm gonna try to weigh it in! Cheers.
Cheers mate. I’ll investigate 👍
I can’t remember if you’ve already shown them and you seem like the sort of bloke who is all over it anyway - but what are your engine mounts like? Going on the condition of the coupler I’m thinking they might need attention but they’re not hard to change (other than perhaps unbolting the old ones). And I suggest keep the coupler loose and check your engine alignment once you’re back in the water before connecting it up to the engine as the hull shape will flex and change quite a bit from what it’s doing on the stands so the engine will likely need proper aligning to the shaft. And I have to ask: what are the two oval shaped steel discs screwed to the aft bulkhead but not symmetrical either side of the companionway ? (And happy belated birthday mate).
Cheers! They're backing plates for clam cleats.
change that forestay..or it will be bumbling rig over the side..
Only a bit of surface rust, it'll be reet.
You good bro?
Marvellous.
Why didn't you just send the chain in, would of been faster that pulling all throw that hole haha
Because I was lay down down inside with 6 inches above my head, no bucket, and a pressing need not to drag scabby chain over my bed and through my home 😂
You do know that calling your video "Pain in the chain" makes the algorithm stack your video with adverts for pain killers and anti inflammatory meds. I still have a tub full of anchor chain that is rusted out every 10 metres because the PO tied rope on the chain every 10 metres.
I didn't call it that though? Do you think it's reading the thumbnail? 😂
That 'cheap' boat is starting to look very expensive, is anything not fecked ?
😂 It's a contessa, there's only one reason it'd be cheap. One of the door catches seems fine tbf.
I'm not sure that your channel will be attracting a very high proportion of experienced saillers (yet) - I'm not one either, merely an aspirant. But I'm pretty sure that 12m of chain is insufficient - 'specially on a deep keel boat with offshore aspirations. The scope sounds okay but that amount of chain is not gonna be heavy enough. Shoot me down. And £440!!! I'd have soaked the chain you have in oil or something and made do.
No, 12m of 8mm is plenty for a boat with no windlass. In fact, 8mm is oversized for the weight of the boat. The anchor chain serves only to control the angle at which the anchor is pulled. 12m of chain on the bed, warp in the water column, and a kerrit in heavy weather. In an offshore boat it's more important to not have too much weight in the bow.
@@BumblingSailor You're probably right. Is the new spec. the same as the old?
@@BumblingSailor it is not really enough. Easy to try out. Tie off one end of the chain to something(solid on the ground) and pull on the other end. You will be able when you pull to lift the chain of the ground, if it would be 25m or more that is impossible. It will work with the line, but you need much more scope, and everybody forgets about the freeboard of the boat. So with everything out you may be good for around 8-9m, wich is good enough for the beginning. If stuff is that expensive in the UK right now, wait until you get to the EU,you could have gotten all chain for that money. All the best, Thanks for the laughs, great video.
If you think I'm pulling 70m of chain onto the deck by hand, you're having a laugh 😂. If you tie the end of 12m of chain to the ground, and then stand 50m away with the end of the rode, you're not going to lift it either. It's not weight, it's distance and angle. The advantage all chain has is the catenary. I can achieve the same with a kerrit. The boat is 26ft with a displacement of 4500kgs!
@@BumblingSailor It was just meant as advice from experince. I was also sailing a lot with small boats. And you are right with the 50m of line on it, bit often there is not that much room .
All good, wish you really the best .👍
Always messes with yer head when i hear the intro music, that is also used on another channel. (Sailing Zatara use it in their videos)
Belated Birthday wishes - another entertaining video. eerr, even watching manky chain being pulled out an anchor locker.
I thought zatara had 'float away'? There's new intro music on the next video, so no more head messing 😂. Cheers!
@@BumblingSailor there title is the float away, but they use the other one during the video sometime. Looking forward to your new tune. Even more looking forward to you in exotic places like the carribean etc 😄
Me too! 😂😂
A man with gloves will do twice as much work!!
That didn't ring true 😂😂😂
Until he chips a nail 😆 lol
How is the engine on her mate? did you get a chance to run it?
Yeah, she runs nice, just a bit loose on the beds. Rectifying it will be a future video. Cheers!
You seem like an interesting character and I enjoy watching . Maybe I not see everything but can you stand up in the boat?
Nope, no standing headroom unfortunately. In the saloon area I only need to tilt my head slightly. I'm used to having a sore neck now 😂
How was your weekend?
It was nice! I watched a dude playing with a chain on youtube!
😂😂😂😂😂 I filmed a dude playing with a chain. I win. 😂
