- Well, I'm nervous about releasing this video. My first one has had such positive feedback (Thank you all!) so I've got to try and keep it up. Unfortunately a lot of this was filmed before I really knew what direction I wanted to take the channel, so I've had to find humour in the edit where possible. If you stick with me, I'll try to strike the balance just right. Your input is valued.
I also messed up with a lot of the camera settings, it was the first time I'd ever used one. I'll get better, I promise!
Thanks for watching!

Just for reference, I've messed up here. The videos are too long. Next week will be one 10 minute episode 2, and one longform episode 2. I can't expect everyone to watch for 30 minutes on my 'shorter' video. Feedback received, changes will be made. Thanks!
Also, I realise now that the jurassic Park reference in the thumbnail might be too obscure and people are wondering why the hell it says clever girl there... Ah well.
I have nothing else to do, so please long video's :)
Clever Giiiiirl... Nope, I got it! =]
JP reference fully appreciated 😂
Hi there, liking the vids, love the ambition. Couple of things for you, whenever you put a hole in the boat and expose the wood core, you should apply epoxy to the exposed wood to seal it. I know you are putting a fitting in and will hopefully seal that but it's still vital to epoxy seal the core first. Also you might have painted that wood before you put it down in the locker.
Appreciate the advice. Luckily my old girl is of an age where she doesn't have a wood core. She's laid up with solid fibreglass. Deck too I believe. Didn't see any sign of a core but I'll check the bit I removed. Cheers for the heads up!
@@BumblingSailor Youre right, UK built 26s are solid GRP throughout. The JJ Taylor ones from Canada however, are cored...
Aye, I also thought, "You should epoxy, varnish or paint that plywood first!"
im very late to the party.. 05/24 but im lovin it so far... subscribed and will be watching them all in sequence..... all hail the algorithm!
🤣😂🤣😂 your a natural mate, cutting to switching on the heater with a stick slayed me....
😂😂😂 Safety first!
This is awesome 👍
I'm in the exact same position, I've bought an old Albin Vega 27' and I thought after watching UA-cam videos "I can do that". I forgot about the winters in northern Sweden 🇸🇪 and I ain't getting anything done i a pile of snow. I'll start work in spring and hopefully I'm on my way to the canaries in the fall. 😁
I'll watch the short one first and the long one later. I'll later make a playlist and put all your videos playing when sleeping to get those hours up!
I'm so subscribing to this, you are hilarious! 😆
Thank you so much! Make sure you turn the volume down, I can't imagine anything worse than having an overweight northerner mumbling bumblings into my ear all night 😂😂😘
me too 🤣
Fair play mate, what an amazing first two videos, you're going to be a UA-cam star. Keep it up, dying to see where you get.
Cheers, I appreciate it!
I’m excited to see where this goes. Looks like you are learning lots about a lot of different things and that’s at least what I think is most important right now in your journey. Keep working, keep learning, keep having fun. Don’t worry about the UA-cam numbers or being awkward on camera or making mistakes or anything. If you keep having fun and progressing, that’s what people want to see!
My only suggestion would be to try to do a deep clean of the boat when you can. With all the dirt out of the little corners(use simple green) and moss(soak in dawn dish soap and warm water and then scrub with a brush for longer than you think you need to) off the lines she will 100% look like a different boat. When you get discouraged, clean the boat top to bottom. This will help keep your mind fresh and organized. this is what I do with boats I work on!
Thanks for the advice!
Need silicone sealer between the bulkhead and the shorepower thingie to stop any rain seeping into your cabin.
I'm gonna remove the gasket that came with it altogether and use Sikaflex once I get the right bolts. Cheers for the suggestion!

in the time it took me to watch the long version, you gained an additional 110 subscribers!!! get on Terry
I'm absolutely blown away, honestly!
You seem to have a quite chipper and spirited manner and that alone will keep me coming back for more. The fact that you're starting off with my absolute favorite bluewater boat has very little to do with my decision to follow. I really enjoy the early videos people post instead of the polished Hollywood versions. Kind of like watching 8mm home movies (Guess that dates me).
I doubt I'll be polishing much, that's not really the type of person I am. Let's hope that makes you stick around, the more the merrier!

Love the channel Terry. Keep it up. Life is for living, not simply surviving. 👍🏻
Thank you, my sentiments exactly! Thanks for watching.
Watched both of the shorter and long version of your videos. I liked them both, and have shown the video to both my wife and daughter. Hopefully both of them will subscribe and watch them as well.
Thank you so much! Hopefully next week the short and long videos will be different from each other, so will offer a different viewing experience. Thanks for watching!
It's like watching a northern British Plucky (sailing to freedom). Really entertaining video.. Cheers!

You should check out refit and sail channel, the guy is a master at restoring contessa sailboats and I believe by you watching them will benefit you greatly. Keep up the work, when you’re eventually sailing it will be well worth it!
Thank you so much!
When drilling into gelcoat make sure you countersink the hole a wee bit. It stops the gelcoat from cracking when you drive the screw into the hole. Also put a small amount of a quality marine sealant on any fastener you put into the gelcoat. Good luck 🤞 Terry.
Cheers for that! The self tappers just cracked it, hence using the bolts in the end. Wish I'd have known! Thanks for watching.

Friend, I really like your channel. I have an Albin Vega in Southern California, and the wiring is an absolute rats nest, so I have a lot of respect for what you just did in this video. Nice work! What I really like is that you are giving your ol girl a lot of love, and that counts for much in this world. I know you are going to have so much fun with this boat! Your boat is beautiful btw- very nice lines. Ima binge watch. Take care.
The albino vega is a cool boat, got a really strong following. Thanks for watching!
I missed the bit where you said in your northern; "Don't belive in spirit levels " 😃
I am certainly looking forward to seeing more, just so I can see your workmanship reaching new heights. This boat project is going to be good for you. Take care Terry.
Oh, I never promised workmanship! I pride myself on being able to get almost anything working with whatever I've got. I never said it'd be pretty! 😂. Every temporary fix is permanent until it breaks again... 😂. Thanks for watching.
Congratulations on your getting a sailboat.
Every piece of wood no matter how small, that is installed on the boat should be epoxied very well on all sides or painted to avoid future rot. Do the job right do it once. Place all electrics well above the water line as high up as possible. Salt water is the enemy. That includes the shore power hookup outside. You will come to regret doing a lazy job on any project. It will waste your time, money & patients. Think projects completely through before you begin. It's gonna help you keep your good humor. Research, research, research every project so you have 100% confidence in the outcome.
Good luck! You will need it. S/V Cork~Texas
Thanks for your advice! Unfortunately the lowest thing inside the boat that is above the waterline is the chart table 😂. These electrics are almost 3ft above the low point of the bilge, the size of the boat forces some comprises unfortunately! Thanks for watching, any advice is appreciated.
Looking forward to your adventures and wishing you the best of luck

You are awesome. Go for it 👊👊

Very Nice start on your projects and videos. A couple of suggestions on the placement of your electrical with a boat that is small and with Long travels you are going to want to have a lot of storage. You could have mounted them on the inside along the inner wall where the battery sits. Which would have left you with an almost empty locker to use. And you should always put a coat of varnish or sealant on any wood you put in your boat just to keep it waterproof. But of course, I can't see what you see so I could be totally wrong. And your comments and sarcasm are great! Good Job.
Man, that's excellent advice. I wish I'd done that. Urgh, there may be an Ep1.1 - revised edition coming out 😂😂😂 thanks for the advice, all is welcome.

Great boat-choice! I like your style and humour. One tip: when sleeping in small boats like the contessa 26 you get a lot of condensation. Treat all the wood you install with a good coat of varnish, or things will get very 'moldy' soon... Keep up the good work !
Thanks for the advice!
You may want to think about having someone with navigation and sailing experience come along with you on your maiden voyage home. Things will break limping this home. There will be tides to navigate. Dying on your first trip will significantly lower the fun factor.
I'm working on it. There'll be no limping, she'll be ship shape and Bristol fashion. 😂
@@BumblingSailor Then I expect you have been talking for dramatic effect on cash, skills and study. WIll be watching.
@@robertfontaine3650 I have knowledge, not experience. Regarding money, nope, none hardly. Aesthetics don't make a boat unsafe, I like her rough around the edges, much like myself 😂. She'll be mechanically sound where she needs to be, and safe to sail.
Terry, I think you videos are great and you are going for it. BUT please please put SAFETY as your paramount principle in everything you do from maintenance to actually going out on the water. Ask yourself the question "if this fails or breaksdown at sea what would I do,..... do I have a backup". We never stop learning no matter how much experience or how well qualified we are when it comes to sailing and safety at sea. You are doing great.
I'm trying to think about redundancy as much as I can in this size boat and on this budget. I'll have emergency nav lights if the DC goes belly up, appropriate safety gear, anything else that people suggest that I find reasonably practicable and within budget. Thanks for looking out for me!
Love your sense of humour! And you're doing grand for a second video! But I really, definitely, very muchly would have varnished that board! Even better, give it a good coat of epoxy. Even marine plywood doesn't like being naked in the presence of moisture. And I'd also bed any fitting through to the outside with some sort of sealant/bedding compound like Sikaflex, not just trust the rubber seals.
The board is coming back out, more to follow!

@@BumblingSailor good to know!
You are different Man. But in a good, ohnest, positive, fair way. There are of course some technical things to improve but let's be ohnest these are just beginnings and I wouldn't be able to do it better, as probably not many would. I love the idea of mocking yourself by the writings. I have the same problem talking to myself and I disagree with myself - looks funny. Take care I'll be watching you ;-)

Great to see you out there chasing your dream 👍
Have a good look around the boat and see what has (and has not) lasted over time. I strongly suggest you coat any new wood you add and especially the end grain with either thickened epoxy or a couple of coats of paint to prevent rot.
That said don’t stop what your doing you have made a great start.
Thank you so much. I've had a few people mention protecting the wood. One chap suggested putting it all against the upright part of the locker to save space, so I may rip it all out and do that yet, because it's a great idea 😂😂😂
If you are having another crack I suggest you look to locate higher in the boat and away from companion way. Electrickery and water aren’t best of friends so high and drier (like existing panel location (or behind engine?) might be good places to start…. I’m liking this armchair expert lark 😂😂
@@chrisreay4811 😂😂 I'll take any expert advice, armchair or otherwise! The locker it's in it about 3ft above the bilge, the upright section is glassed onto the Hull so it's effectively a sealed area. The battery charger alone won't fit where the current dc set is, and I need to get more stuff there. It's just going to have to be a compromise. I'm putting a tour video up on Sunday probably, so I'll try to show the location better then, because a few have raised concerns, which means I'm concerned. Only an idiot wouldn't listen 😂. Unfortunately the lowest place inside the boat that is above the waterline is on top of the chart table, and that ain't happening 😂 #SmallBoatProblems
All good. Looking forward to the tour! Happy New Year.
Just remember the first rule of boat repair "When in doubt, fake it" Works most of the time
I'm going with 'every temporary fix is permanent until it breaks again' 😂😂. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for watching.
Terry... congrats on starting your channel, I really hope it works out for you. Got a few things of note and I'd be surprised if not mentioned by others...
When doing any boat work always consider what you're doing and how water will affect it. Perhaps as a newbie it's not as obvious but very important. If not too sure and you're running in real time then mention in your vids what you plan to accomplish over the next week or two and you will get advice before the cockup!
Where your shore power connection is you will get pooling water and very possibly water ingress, Sikafkex is your friend for any sealant, ignore the rest of the crap out there.
Electronics and batteries need to be above the waterline at all costs and that includes visual aesthetics. With your battery in the bilge you need to think that if you get water coming in, covers your battery and shorts out you lose bilge pumps, radio and possibly nav, none of which you can afford to be without. You also lose the ability to start your engine if that isn't under water by that time. Your engine you can set up to also pump bilge water overboard in case of emergency.
Your port and starboard berth lockers in our old Achilles 24 always used to get damp and often got pooled water because the windows or fixings needed resealing. If we had electronics in there we would have had serious issues.
Have you read the book Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi? She was the first woman to sail solo around the world at age 18. She got a Contest 26 when they first came out and she had some trials and tribulations but she made it. If you would like it I can send it to you, just let me know mate.
All the best and hope this helps.
Duncan
Hi, thanks for watching. It's all great advice, I just can't see a way to implement some of it. The only place above the waterline is on top of the chart table 😂. There's just nowhere else with enough space to put them other than in this berth locker, that I can see. Didn't seal the socket due to low temps and wrong bolts, I have sikaflex ready to go, and I agree I never use anything else! Everything was stuck to my campervan using it. On first read I didn't agree with the pooling water due to the socket being a couple of inches up. But I wasn't thinking about when heeled over. It's supposed to be waterproof when closed, but we all know nothing really is 😂. The area that the lower battery is in all slopes aft towards a much deaper bilge, it'd take an awful lot of water to get to it, but it's within the realm of possibilities. I may move it into the port berth locker as a compromise. I can't read your comment whilst writing my reply so I've almost definitely forgotten something! Thanks for watching and I welcome all the advice. Thank you.
Ah, yes I have the book on board! First time I ever heard of a Contessa was from it! Cheers!
Things I think should on your shopping list. Lazy jack's, stackpack, and lead all your lines back to the cockpit. Also a reefing system so you don't have to leave the cockpit when your single handing. I think you need to be putting safety first and spend your money their first.
Good luck
I understand your concerns, currently only the main halyard, topping lift, reefing line are at the mast. I have a safety line running from the gangway to the mast step on the centreline, so not too hazardous. I've got hanked on foresails so I'm gonna have to go up there anyway, unless I get a furler, but I like the idea of hanked on sails for some reason. Its all stuff I'll think about, thank you.
Any skin fitting or screws exposed to the elements need some anti corrosion on the screws.. TC11 for example. I'd also put sicoflex behind the external socket as well.
Yeah, I definitely need some sealant on there. Got some EBT in the car I think... Thanks!
Your doing a great job 👍 you will get water pooling near that big hole you drilled so use some sealer or it WILL leak ! Sorry mate .
Cheers for the heads up!

Sweet boat, just needs a little work
Certainly!
Should've painted that wood or used a Varathane to help seal it, and help it last a bit longer. U can always do it later..worst case scenario.
It's coming back out in a couple of months 👍
you'll will want to put some thicken epoxy in the void in the cabin wall, that way if water ever Gets In Through the socket it won't run down into your Plywood / Balsa wood core and start to rot it.
I'm pretty sure it's solid fibreglass, someone already mentioned it. I'll have a look at the bit I removed and see if there's a core, thanks for the heads up!

@@BumblingSailor im just worried about you being heeled over and the water getting into your electrical equipment. Thats all.
I remember Nick Jaffe having a lot of fun with water in his Contessa. As we say, she'll be right mate.
(sung to when you wish upon a star) When you cut into the core, makes no difference where you are, you must seal it evermore, use epoxy or a resin, and your boat will rot no more.....

Throw those connectors away. They cause many issues on boats. Make all joints with solder conections.
👌
If it was me I would get the plywood out and give it a few coats of epoxy all over to seal it or you will have something that looks like soggy cardboard in a couple of years time. Slap a bit in the screw holes you made in the boat as well.
While you have the epoxy mixed up put some on the plywood core you exposed behind the fibreglass when you dilled the big whole, then apply some sikaflex or similar around the back of the shore socket so that you aren't relying totally on the rubbery gasket for a water tight seal.
Hi, the ply is coming back out in the next couple of months and being replaced by plastic. There's no core between the fibreglass, these boats of this age are laid up solid. The temperature was outside the curing range for sikaflex, plus I needed a change the screws. Thanks for watching!

not too shabby for the first videos well done, but why put the wood in the locker? you could fit everything on the back of the existing panels, plus the charger could be nearer the battery = less wiring back and forth, and keep the left hand of the locker empty
