Just imagine how brave were sailors before modern era
the ship would snap in half due to it not being able to bend the hull because it was made of wood

@@kennethhoppe2259parrots?
1500-1600... wood ships moved by wind. But to cross Drake, it was impossible for them, i guess
Imagine this..
But on a wooden ship..
In the middle of the night..
And that day everyone thanked the science behind those windows.
No doubt!
@@phajduk86 it’s actually more dish-shaped...curls up on the sides a lil. The waves near Antarctica do tend to be more dramatic like this but only because the water sloshes up around the sides of the bowl some and that’s what makes the waves around those parts appear larger. The planet can’t be perfectly flat because otherwise what would hold in all the waters of the oceans? It just makes sense that there is a bowl-like quality to plizzanet earth.
Sure this could be computer generated but that’s pretty close to what things look like near the curled up edges of the world.

Welcome to the realization of what humankind went through to settle and explore.
And steal land
@@ayadiwata Thinking such as that is what keeps us warring with one another over something we never can truly own... Only lay claim to for a time. As we live on this planet, we kill it and ourselves faster trying to prove who owns what. We own nothing but time here and the sooner its realized perhaps then we can exist in peace. Doubtful, as everyone needs to say who owns what and lay their little claims down... as we always have. Fighting as animals for territory... well, animals migrate...why shouldn't humans have as well? The downfall of humanity is the pompous thinking that we are in any control here... one large enough asteroid or solar flare and we lose our footing and creature comforts. You are absolutely entitled to your opinions of course, just as I am.
@@ayadiwata True facts
@@ayadiwata If you live, work, and inhabit this supposedly stolen land, instead of willingly giving it to the people you think it was stolen from, does that not make you a hypocrite?
Absolutely amazing to think about those primitive ships exploring the ocean...
This is why I only sail little boats on little lakes - on sunny days...
😂😂
🤣🤣👍👍
That's a rogue wave, they can come at you during the sunniest and calmest days
I would never dismiss the significance of a rouge wave but they are unlikely on smaller lakes. Waves on a smaller lake make waterskiing difficult. They are not much problem in the body.
400th like by me ❤
Amazing thing to see on camera!! Never want to see it in real life.
Kudos to windshield designers.
Sailing on wooden ships through waves like this at night would be insane major shout out to the ones throughout history who explored the world before Technology
Everyone else: "Can we do that again?? : D" Capt: "Nope!"
Ocean: I am the captain now.
The alarm after the first wave intensified it for me
Europeans who made long voyages across vast oceans in thier wooden ships with sails in 15 to 18th century were very brave to cross the oceans faced fierce storms and still survived.
Yep, they were brave and greedy.

My uncle wasn't joking that travelling on the seas of Antarctica is a real nightmare. He's a retired first mate and i love his stories when he was on the ship. Especially the Antarctica and the African waters.
wow that’s incredible, nature is both beautiful and terrifying, really glad everyone’s okay
Imagine being stuck in that ocean thrown off that ship floating in that water OMG
Nature is horrible
@ptrekboxbreaks5198 I've got news for you, you wouldn't be floating for long 😂
Gods creation is wonderful for sure. Every breath is a gift! Hallelujah to Jesus

i cooked on a crab boat out of Kodiak, Alaska. This was waaaaaay before THE DEADLIEST CATCH. I saw waves that no one else that i know, ever has. There was "Green water over the Wheelhouse". That meant we went right THROUGH a 70 ft. wave. The tops of big waves are foamy and white. The center of those waves are the same color as the rest of the ocean. In Alaska the Being sea is this beautiful color of green glass... like the bottom of a old 7uP bottle! .. Jade like. The force of the wave took out all of the windows i in the wheel house (where the Captain Steers the Dang boat)... A few alarms went off but no Survival Suits had to be put on. But... it was the scariest and most exhilarating moment of my entire life. i was 28 then... I'm 64 now and NOTHING has topped That memory or that feeling. 1,000 ft. high roller coaster ride would pale in comparison!

I remember working with a lady in the early 90’s and her step son used to come in the store and visit her. He was older than me and he had a really “crazy” look in his eyes. A few months later he dropped by to say goodbye. He was off to Alaska to go fishing for the season. Keep in mind this was in Long Island NY which is pretty darn far from Alaska!!😂
Yikes! But did you eat all the crabs yoy wanted, though? 😂
Thx for sharing wow

Wow that wave made that cannon face up
I've got the utmost respect for anyone who braves waves like this, the seas are a place you don't take lightly

All fun and games til you remember you left your phone on the deck 😳
This reminded me of the gargantuan tidel wave in the movie Interstellar.
I know. But the ship took it like a champ.
Only took it like a champ because of its battle thick window and hitting it head on. That wave could have capsized her broadside
Also.
.rogues get much bigger than that
There was a good movie years ago called, "The Last Wave", starring Richard Chamberlain. It was about a man who had a very good and spiritual relationship with Australian Aborigines. Visions kept coming to him... and them. They didn't share everything. It had to be interpreted. You kept seeing scenes that were just clips of thoughts and then reality returned. He, and those watching with their popcorn (lol!), kept trying to solve meaning of the clips. The end was great!! Over the years, I must have watched that movie 5 times.
The sea's a harsh Mistress indeed.😌
“I was kinda scared there…”

Wow, and Shackleton and his men traversed the Drake passage with a little wooden lifeboat after having spent more than a year stranded on ice!
Pretty sure after an entire year, they didn’t go when the waves were like that

Beautiful deep turquoise colored waves crashing against the glass.

Being out there is the loneliest of feelings.
My Neighbor who work on a fishing boat in the bearing sea tell me of all kinds of stories related to his job fishing on big boat.
Imagine sailing that in a tiny wooden boat
This is really interesting and informative. Very enlightening. See it's aship of patrol hits amassive waves near Antarctica.
Ernest Shackleton and his three companions had to brave the Southern Ocean in the ship's lifeboat (their ship, the Endurance, had been crushed in the ice) on their voyage between Whale Island and South Georgia. One night they encountered a similar giant wave. The boat was an open boat, but they had covered it in canvas precisely because of this risk.
This is why mars was discovered faster then Antarctica

God bless the Battleships
Love the massive cannon on the foredeck.
Check out the change in the barrel of that cannon. The sea won that arm wrestle match.
I love how the background noise slowly shifts from nervous laughter and banter to sirens going off and all hands on deck resuming their posts lol
very impressive!
That nervous high pitched laughter was followed by a warm feeling in one's underclothing. I hate when that happens...

I love to see such waves form upon me
To all those who seem to feel the urge to thank the bravery of their forefathers that had such encounters on wooden ships:
In modern times ships still get often sunk by those waves. The danger is not the The incredible power of these monster waves but that the ship is pulled under water or overturned. The sailor speaking in the video is rightly afraid. This looked pretty close.
The fact that it broke wave out in the open sea is almost rare to see
The Cannon barrel was level with the deck, ended pointing another direction when that wave rolled over,
Wow! Massive waves.
Cool video.
Just got remembered about the seoul Farry tragedy 😢
"Now, the weatherdecks are secured to all traffic. "

Nothing bests having to throttle up over waves to drop down the other side and carry on. Scary but if you got someone who is good at the wheel its exciting and terrifying

I’m glad my only sailing experience is with my kids’ toys during bath time
Imagine doing this in a small. Sailing vessel like Sir Francis Drake did when he navigated this passage the first time back at the beginning of the age of sail.
It scared him so bad that the next time he needed to get to the Pacific coast, he sailed to what is now the isthmus of Panama where he beached his ships, removed the rigging, sails and everything of value and burned the ships to get the nails back. Ported everything they're saved over the mountains to the Pacific coast where they cut down trees and built new ships. That's how rough sealing through Drake's Passage was, how badly. It terrified the experienced pirates that traveled with this British Elite with a license to privateer which is a permit to pirate anyone and everyone but British Interests as long as they don't use the nation's flag.
