Storms are times when waves rise like mountains, the air is full of flying foam spraying so much you can hardly see ahead. Imagine 178,000 tons of steel being lifted effortlessly and dropped back into the sea so hard the bow literally goes under and comes up dripping, creaking with sea water flowing down the sides. Rinse repeat for four days to a week.
Storms originate from many reasons out at sea. However, the main factor is the pressure difference. Oceans behave differently in comparison to land in terms of surface and overall temperatures.
This behaviour pattern leading to air draft creates 2 different storm behaviours:
Cyclones
Tornados
Weather Routing agencies, private or public, provide this critical information. These agencies use three major systems to connect the information across:
Remote Communication Satellite
Navigation Satellite
Remote Sensing Satellite
Each shipping company connects its ship to such premium quality weather routing services. At the time of departure, the ships get an input of their next destination. Thereafter, the second officer connects a plot suitable to reach the destination within safety regulations.
With changing weather, the weather routing agency delivers an update of the storms within the route. This allows a ship to either change its course altogether or to change its speed accordingly.
Ships generally adapt a counterclockwise approach when going towards a storm. This also includes maintaining a course as far away from the “eye” as possible. The standard process of riding the swell or taking the waves at the front comes under the radar of awareness.
The bridge watchkeeping standards play an important role in every aspect. This includes the master’s and chief mate’s ability to put their experience up for the count.
Many climatic changes such as global warming make storms unpredictable. This makes dynamic responsiveness more critical than ever.
With increasing vessel sizes and capacity, manoeuvring techniques evolve simultaneously. Hence, the modern shipping interventions, stronger than ever, provide a haven for the maritime future.
Merchant navy has various departments & I am from the Navigation department. I have recently been promoted to the rank of a 2nd Officer onboard Maersk Ship.

Another superb documentary KSN! To be honest with you - any time at sea my seasickness disappears during a storm. Incredible how measured, focused and professional you are holding your Bridge watch during this situation.
I have travelled out on North Sea and passed Bay of Biscay in ferries and sailed on smaller vessels out on the English Channel and conditions get worse than this before crew gets jitters. The adrenaline kick is something though,

@@davecroft5197 its a nicely edited video, with some added wind sound effects. But like you said, Bay of Biscay and the English Channel can have some crazy conditions. Didnt see any danger to the ship in the video, no extreem waves, just some spray over the bow, and absolutely no danger of sinking. Nevertheless a nice video.

I have been a commercial fisherman for over 40 years in New Zealand & your version of a storm on the bridge of a huge ship is completely different to our version of trying to work in that type of sea. Funny how you are filming waves as tall as a house going past but they look small & benign. Thanks for the great video.

I been out in 50-60 foot waves in a 65 foot boat. Probably should have died. What a sight to see, waves taller than the mast of your vessel.

I went through a typhoon in the South China Sea on a Navy destroyer. The ship would roll to about a 40 to 45 degree list and hang there. I walked down one long passageway on the bulkhead! Good thing? Short lines in the cafeteria! After eating I had to go up one deck and as I went to take my first step onto a ladder, the ship dropped into a trough and VOILA!, I was at the top of the ladder!
Scary and exhilarating at the same time.

As someone who also served on a Destroyer, the USS Lawrence a DDG, I can attest to the validity and probability of your statement.
Destroyers/DDG's were known as the Submarines of the surface fleet and where the old saying of "Over one, under Two" came from...LOL

Those seas were pretty rough. Amazing how a ship's hull can flex as much as it does from the torque placed on it from stormy seas. Decks awash in seawater , buffeting winds strong currents really test the construction of the ship as well as the ability of the crews to handle it. Excellent video really captures the atmosphere and intensity of the event.

If the route to your destination put these large waves on your beam, would you alter course to minimize severe rolling? I’m wondering how dangerous a beam sea is to a large ship like yours, I’ve only operated small boats.

Have you thought of putting a camera at one end of the keel access and time lapse it. I have seen another video from a couple of years back from one of these large container ships and it’s amazing the movement of the ship itself during these storms. Great video. As an airline captain, we face bad weather often and have to navigate around it. Unfortuately, unlike your cargo, our passengers get very nervous.
The look on your face and the tone of your voice. Both express the live experience you are going through. I have experienced bad storms on ships. Force 9 in the English Channel. And similar around the Bay of Biscay. But I was young and merely a passenger. All you know is it is horrible. Having watched all your videos, and seen all the weather reporting you get. Still to get such an unpredicted storm that you can't avoid just highlights how insignificant we are in the great scheme of things. Just imagine being on an old sailing vessel hundreds of years ago. Almost blindly traversing the globe. Easy to see why so many disappeared. You have to respect the earth's 4 main elements.

'The sea willingly gives up her resources to mankind & the only thing she demands in return is total respect'.

Great editing. A very compelling story. In US Coast Guard, my vessel was just 55m and in the gulf of Alaska we took a couple 47 degree rolls port to stbd in 10-12m sea state. I thought we were going to go over.

In 1999, I was running a 95 foot longliner and got caught hurricane Irene. We were ahead of the weather and still were in 12 to 15 foot seas, with the occasional 20-foot wall of water. Was not a pleasant experience seeing sky then a wall of water.

I have the greatest respect for mariners. I took a ferry one winter from Harwich UK to Sweden. A huge storm hung over the North Sea. It was so rough all the passengers were sent to their cabins and all the services shut down. Furniture was flying, anything not tied down was flying, passengers and crew crawling on hands and knees to get around. The ship was making the most horrendous noises, like it was breaking apart. We put our mattresses on the floor in our tiny cabin and used them as padding as we were sliding back and forth. It was absolutely terrifying, made worse by the fact that if the boat got in distress there was no way to rescue anyone. Going down in a sinking ship must be a terrifying way to die. On the return trip the weather was beautiful. Crystal clear skies and the sea was like glass. The oceans deserve our utmost respect. Their mood can change as quickly as a petulant toddler. It takes great courage to be a sailor when the seas are at their worst.

Giving my absolute respect and admiration to maritime merchants. Their job is no easy task. And having to traverse in the sea is very scary. Especially if it's during a storm. Thank goodness that I didn't join the Navy. Seeing this POV gave me a clear insight on what it's like being on a ship.
I can only imagine how turbulent the weather was and was getting goosebumps looking at the angry sea just on the screen. Hats off to you all to have stayed calm and collected with your head on shoulders making decisions. Oceans and seas are the most mysterious places on earth that still hold so many secrets in them.
When the ship is tilting so much, where is the best and safest place to be in at? Is it safest closer to the base?
It is not safe to be anywhere honestly!
But staying inside the accommodation cuts out many risks
