And suddenly, everything is ocean.. Imagine being a survivor and having to rebuild after that. I'm sure they're still rebuilding today, from damage almost a decade ago. (Japan, 2011)
For everyone's information, the tsunami wave that the Japanese ship rode through was the wave of 3.11 Great East Japan earthquake which had a magnitude of 9.0, the biggest earthquake ever recorded in Japan. Over 20000 people perished in this tsunami and fires that followed. Considering this significance, there's no doubt that this one gets number 1 on the list.
Dude I think pretty much everyone is scared of those things, you come to grow and realise your fears are a normal human reaction to these things, some people push past this fear for various reasons if you want to surf you have to over come this or work on a boat etc etc but equally you don't have to if you don't need to, it's healthy and wise to fear the ocean it will swallow you up in the blink of an eye and you will probably be lost to it forever
For professional sailors these waves are pretty common. That's why you hear people laughing and they are filming it. That's also why the title is "caught on camera". If sailors fear for their lifes, they won't take out a camera. (Actually that goes for anyone in any situation). Or they do, underestimating the situation, but the footage gets lost due to being on the bottom on the ocean. There are 40 meter waves out there that will sink almost any ship. (changed height from 100 to 40 meters)
@@hemelinger7792 the largest one ever recorded was 100 feet. that's 30 meters and that was after a major earthquake. the only times you'll see 100 meters is if an asteroid hits earth.
@@chrismccabe1795 you are right the number is wrong. It was most likely 100 feet, where I got the info, not meters. Changed it to 40 meters, which is the size it can reach according Wikipedia. Btw, Tsunami waves get higher when reaching the coast, but that were not the ones, I was writing about.
It always seems like real sailors laugh in the face of massive waves. You see it in multiple videos of sailors and waves. No ship today is able to handle the pressure from the biggest rogue wave that was ever recorded. And when you are in risk but can't do anything but to watch, you tend to just laugh in a fear and unknown results that might appear seconds later.

I love the feeling of being in a boat and feeling it being tossed around. Thank goodness I have never felt seasick. Forty years ago and more I remember being on the ferry to Ireland and my sister and I would run down the corridors being flung from side to side, and there would be sick washing around the public toilets but there was a sill that stopped it coming out into the corridors. When we were in our cabin we used to get tossed from side to side in our bunks and my Dad would put the plug in the sink to stop stuff gurgling up. I think the newer ferries are much bigger and more stable, and I probably would be scared now rather than exhilarated!

Modern ships are actually really safe, you can't sink your ship unless you manage to breach the hull, which is nigh impossible to do in the middle of the ocean during peaceful times. Ships are not made of the same metal as cars, they're very, VERY hardy. Plus, they stay afloat because the compartments beneath the deck that are filled with air and keep the ship above water are watertight, and you can't flood them easily. MORE OVER, most cargo ships have more than one compartment that are divided by watertight barriers, so even if one compartment floods, the ship will still stay afloat. These things are fascinating and way, way safer than cars.
The reason why I dont get on ships, except for short trips like from Europe to Britain maybe. You can also get seasick for days with no real medical help.

Video of those massive waves going over the top of a ship is something I got lucky enough to experience a board the West Star (404 foot long) cruise ship. Less than one day out the icebergs started to move haphazardly during our Seward to Vancouver cruise. With 90% of the ship seasick (weak tea and soda water was my diet), I spent hours in the cocktail lounge above the bridge while massive waves broke over the top of the ship. Calling it exciting is an understatement. When you’re in that type of situation, that’s when you learn just how powerful the ocean really is. Now I just wish I could do it all over again :-)

Mountains of water... It's really breathtaking how a wave is rapidly build up and then collapse pulling another wave behind it. Billions of gallons of water raise up in the air like a furious fist of the deep sea.
Imagine ships only powered by the wind and being up in the rigging trimming sails, hands freezing soaked to the bone. Few can match those men in this wussified world.
@@jonathank2512 that might not be the case though. Waves that big can easily capsize the ships they are sailing in. The only thing they can do to prevent that is making sure the ship is balanced in weight, face the wave and then pray. The spice must flow
They also knew the ocean much better than we do now
@@stephenhaskell273 absolutely not

Amazing reaction
He crazy crazy.
M Navarro lmfao
I wonder how he wakes up every morning knowing he handled that wave...... must be nice to be a legend

@ ivana
That surfer must be the luckiest man on earth. I salute his bravery and skills. Riding a wave that big isn't an event that happens every day or to everyone
A giant dangerous wave: *exists*
Surfers: *it's free real estate*
If those rocks weren’t there that waved be huge
Xcontrol That’s what’s even scarier
it’s almost like they said that in the video
Probably a tsunami because of those rock sizes
Melissa White nah rogue wave
It also flood the beach they are in
Idk why I'm watching this while on a cruise ship out in the middle of the ocean. Like what am I doing to myself.
You bought wifi or something, Cause when i was at boat from Holland to England i had to pay an insane amount of money. And 4G was even more expensive
@@NatteNek I was on NCL Bliss, It was like 250$USD for One device unlimited wifi, Then they dropped all our bags and luggage in the Hudson river when were boarding. Gave us another free unlimited wifi, so me and my wife was good. but they weren't very helpful with the stuff that got damaged. :/ oh well.
@Michael Jones I couldn't make that up lol. Another couple that we were talking to said they were sitting in the buffet and look out the window and watch all there stuff fall in the water too.
Luckily for you cruise ships don't tip over ;)

LOL I just love that guy with his gf "relax, relax" HAHAHA
She had good reason to be concerned. That water could easily pull the car back into the ocean with it when it recedes back
True😂❤️
@@manz7860 Except it wasn't going to recede back because it was clearly the result of an over-sized wave hitting the barrier and flowing over flat ground then down a slope away from the ocean.
I'd honestly be the gf.
He's so annoying
God my GOD..... The creations you created so mystifying and terrifying at the same time
The ocean terrifies me. I've never had the urge to go swimming around in it. I feel vindicated by this video.
Do you have Thalassphobia? (Fear if deep dark water)

U have aquaphobia then

ikr me too
Funny things is they guy was laughing like he did it before
Luc Koster he probably knew for sure that his boat could do that
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Captains and Co-Captains go through stuff like this all the time. He laughed because on the ocean a Captain knows what his boat can fight through. If he woulda said "oh shit" or something of that matter this would be a recovered tape of boats sank
Guy on boat getting swallowed by a giant wave: laughing
Me watching at 4am: nearly having a nervous breakdown
Ok but if my boat was built like that knowing i wouldn't die i would enjoy it too
He laughed from either anxiety or fear of death, its called *uncontrollable* laughter
Me too man!
I'm just imagining being on a tiny boat and seeing these waves
Apple Electricity that must be exciting! 😁

Trust me. We should not assume that they are not equally scared to open a new business, or tackle their life responsibilities. Some of what we see is escapism.

Lucky you it wasn’t a riptide.

It's really breathtaking how a wave is rapidly build up and then collapse pulling another wave behind it. Billions of gallons of water raise up in the air like a furious fist of the deep sea.

Imagine sailing those waters with 17th century ships.
Imagine ships only powered by the wind and being up in the rigging trimming sails, hands freezing soaked to the bone. Few can match those men in this wussified world.
Jozua86 . Ikr, aleuts had these little but awesome kayak boats and hunted whale. Amazing what our ancestors did. I would love to experience the ocean.
thats why they usually stuck to the coast and it took them ages to discover the americas.
Imagine drowning

Ocean : big waves that almost sinks the ship
Sailors : laughs
Me : 💀💀
Thats Russians for you crazy
@@terranovarain6570 those sailors werent even russian tho lol
The ocean: am I a joke to you?
Its cuz they knew it wouldnt hurt the ship
@@jonathank2512 that might not be the case though. Waves that big can easily capsize the ships they are sailing in. The only thing they can do to prevent that is making sure the ship is balanced in weight, face the wave and then pray. Nothing else can really be done aside from those 3 things and if one of the first two aren't done, then there's a very high chance the ships a goner.
