    Holy crap! 4(cards and clocks) * 22 (games) * 2(resolutions) = 176 test runs. It's very impressive number. My respect.

    That's gotta be such an insane grind getting all this data, dealing with driver installs, Windows, game installs, etc. Respect for putting in so much time and love into the videos. Seriously impossible to find such in depth hard numbers from such a large data pool, anywhere else. Keep at it Steve :]

    I always chuckle at those snarky comments about games. Great video! Seems like some games at 1440p really do show the VRAM limitations of the 970. And it seems that in games with higher single-thread CPU utilization AMD cards suffer more, probably because of that fact the main thread is processing all the AMD GPU draw calls. That's an unfixable thing, I think. Otherwise the 390 would be the winner.
    Seems like both cards have their positives and negatives here.

    • @WhiteoutTech
      @WhiteoutTech 7 років тому +3

      nah the problem isnt the vram. if the game would require more vram than the gpu has it would be a complete unplayable stutter fest

    • @Judas101010
      @Judas101010 7 років тому +2

      foreign's gaming tech right on the mark with cpu main thread draw call limitation. unless game developers unload some of the graphic compute futures to other threads or rather draw call submits, amd cards with the more or less fixed hardware sheduler can't handle the limitations on driver side like nv is doing with deferres context-command line. vram isn't a issue on the 970 with it's strong polymorph engine+tile based rendering freeing up vram compression. worst case scenario a game has to load-unload data onto the vram very fast, there would be no stutter or other issues.

    • @ubertiger151
      @ubertiger151 7 років тому +2

      play resident evil 7 and you will see the problem of gtx 970.

    • @Judas101010
      @Judas101010 7 років тому +2

      Tile based rendering happens at the front end of the card, by avoiding the vram, in addition memory compression is far more advanced on nv cards and negates the bandwidth disparity. In higher resolutions the front end (polymorph engines) of the 970 weighs less and the more stream processors helps 390 to take less performance hit because of the heavier pixel shading process.
      @UberTiger1 shadow cache can be switched off. This function makes no sense with abundant vram. Furyx loses 10 fps with this option on and the frame times are horrible, without it it's more fps and buttery smooth gameplay. My 390 gains around 30 fps with shadow cache on. Wish more games had this option.

    This goes to further prove that the RX 480 is ROP Starved! By all synthetic benchmarks, the RX 480 SHOULD slaughter the R9 390 due to frequency alone, but the 390 has TWICE the Render Output Pipeline -aka Pixel Pipelines, aka ROPs, as the RX 480! RX 480 = 32 ROPs, R9 390 = 64 ROPs, R9 390X/Fury X = 64 ROPs, GTX 970 = 56 ROPs, GTX 1060 = 48 ROPs, GTX 980/1070/1080 = 64 ROPs, GTX 980 Ti/Titan X/Xp = 96 ROPsm GTX 1080 Ti = 88 ROPs.
    The RX 480 is render starved! I CALLED this ages ago when it was announced that Polaris woukd ONLY have 32 ROPs at most, meanwhile even a GTX 1050 has 32 ROPs from Nvidia! Obviously ROPs are only one SMALL part of overall performance, but if you don't have enough or fast enough clocked ROPs, any given GPU can choke on too much geometry. And since Nvidia runs at such higher frequencies, even with frequency being the same, Pascal ROPs are clocked a good 60%+ higher than Polaris, same as the core. Also Nvidia give FAR more ROPs per CUDA and per Memory controller than AMD.

Only time the 2014 (3 year) card fell behind was in AMD favored games or when that 3.5 ram got in the way. King of what? Being the best heater for your room since 2015?

      The R9 390 beats the gtx 970 in almost every game and is future proof. When you bought a gtx 970 back then, you need to upgrade in the future.. 3.5 is nothing anymore, but with a 390 you have a 2015 Videocard you dont even need to upgrade.. so stfu pls

    Just checked pricing on used GPU's and the cheapest GTX 970 on eBay was $299 and $319 for the R9 390. On Craigslist Chicago area the cheapest was $250 for the GTX 970 and $600 for the R9 390 (that guy didn't get the Memo Bitcoin shot back down).

    I have the MSI R9 390, I got it for 295 US dollars on Newegg back in late summer 2016 when I built my gaming PC. It's a good card. I have heard it's better than the RX 480/580. All I know is it still plays whatever games I throw at it. Depending on the price of whatever Vega turns out to be I might using the 390 for a while. The videos I have seen it keeps up with the RX 480 or even slightly better. It makes no sense to buy a GTX 970 and pay for 4GB of video memory and only get 3.5GB. It also makes no sense to buy 480 or 580 if you can get a 390 cheaper. Only issue with the 390 is it gets hot. Mine never goes below 60 degress Celsius depending on the room temperature and it can easily reach 75 degrees Celsius while playing certain games (GTA V) and if over clocked it can get up to 80 degrees Celsius. I am using 3 140mm fans in my case, one is blocked by the HDD rack where my HD and SSD are. But still. If heat is an issue with you then get something that runs cooler.

I think it might be worth mentioning too, the 290s and 390s have the possibility to unlock extra shader units to their full X counterparts, certainly not all of them but some of them can.
    Thank you again.

    awesome videos I just love how you guys bench way more games than any of my favorite UA-camrs. The broad bench of games instead of just 3 or 5 is very helpful on picking the right hardware as each have strengths and weaknesses with different games and hardware setup. I really do appreciate the hard work you put in which I know can be very time consuming. As I get the green light from the wife to upgrade my hardware ( still rocking my 8350 and my hd7870) I also plan to venture into the UA-camrs realm.

    2. Make a comparisson between Maxwell & Pascal on the same clock speeds.

Now that amd is starting to get their act together it's great to see the performance difference... Holy cow nice review or look back on how these cards perform in today's games. Thank You.
    I have a Sapphire Tri-X 390x card with high OC. I find it to be more than enough for me yet in today's games still. Now one of the things I found was in AMD settings under games Global Settings the tess setting. Id you take it from AMD Optimized and set it to 8x or 16x you will get a massive FPS boost in a lot of the games that are Nvidia favored games. The reason is in a lot of the games that favor Nvidia the tess setting will go to 64x on AMD cards which really is over kill. On the RX 400 series cards this type of thing is actually blocked from happening in either the drivers or built into the hardware itself. I play with the tess setting at 16x in all games and I found no difference on quality and the FPS are a lot higher for me at least they are. I am able to crank the setting max now and enjoy smooth FPS. I am surprised no one has checked this out before on youtube and if they have I missed it...lol

    I think turning down settings down a tiny bit, especially AA, would help with 1440p performance. Considering that 1440p is giving you better fidelity, it's something I would do to save some frames

    Back when I was looking at a 390 or 970 they were the same price and the same performance so I went with the 390 because it has more vram, and today it's sliiightly paid off. Unless you count all the people constantly telling me I made a bad purchase.
    Even though in this video the 390 came out a little bit ahead there are people raging in the comments about how the 970 is better, that's a bit too much fanboyism, if the brand names were covered up then everyone would agree the 390 would be a better choice

      Power efficiency has been proven to be "blown out of the water"
      Difference in electrical costs are negligible from a 150w card to a 300w card.
      And if you're talking efficiency, a 1060 is nearly 200% the performance but less than 150% power draw of the 1050ti :/
      Which would make it more efficient in terms of dollars per frame or even frame per watt.
      Low(ish) end cards are seldom the best value

      +Haxor inator thanks for the info. As much as I'd like to get a 1060, it's double the cost of my 1050Ti where I'm from. Honestly, I'm gaming mostly with indie titles and only a few older AAA games/console ports like Bayonetta. The most demanding game I currently have is only Doom.

    i have the 390 and as a budget purchase it was a good card, but living with it is another matter, it gets VERY hot even after market versions. Has ALOT of coil whine in wierd places, i went for the 390 as it was much cheaper than the 970, but now adays if i had to chose again id go 970 or 980 for the extra bucks.

    Nice job with the benchmarks! I have the same GTX 970 card and wanted to see the OC clock speeds but I didn't find it in the article. Can you pleas share it?
    I'm planning on getting a 4K IPS monitor. Hopefully the 970 will handle it well. I have no problem with lowering graphic details to Medium or even Low in games in order to get a stable 60fps in 4K. Do you think the 970 is up to this task? I play games like CSGO, SC2, BF3&4, HOMM6, AoW3, Mass effect series, Doom, etc...
    Keep up the good work,
    Peter

    I had to RMA my RX480, and am still waiting for it to get back.
    In the meantime I found a GTX 970 (msi gaming) for $40 (yes $40!) at a thirft store.
    On impulse, I then bought a second GTX 970 for $150 USD on ebay cause it seemed like a good deal.
    Now I have a 970 SLI setup and for better or worse, it'll probably perform wonderfully in some games and not so good in others with poor sli support.

    Im the USA you can find used GTX 980 Tis for just $260 right now, and at that price they are THE BEST DEAL EVER! Especially if you overclock them to 1400+ core at which point they are FASTER than a GTX 1070!

      They have gone back up in price again, because they WERE the best value per dollar high end GPU, and now everyone wants one, because like I said, BETTER performance - significantly so than a GTX 1070, especially if like me, you can hit 1500+ MHZ core and 8 GHZ effective VRAM.
      I am still absolute THRILLED having bought my G1 Gaming GTX 980 Ti for $355 in August 2016! I have literally got basically 1070 Ti performance for a solid ~$60+ less than a good GTX 1070 would have cost at best!

    R9 390 is still a very good GPU. Still playing games in 1440P and lowering some settings like Ambient Occlusion to SSAO, Shadows to medium, AA to FXAA and you can get 60FPS in most titles, unless if its shitty optimization like Ghost Recon Wildlands ( On ultra ) and Deus Ex . In any case you can always change the resolution to 1080P.

  • @steamedauroraborealis8208

    The 970 will always be my biggest tech regret. When I bought mine, the R9 390 literally came out just a week later offering similar performance but 8gb of RAM. That 8GB of RAM made me feel sick to my stomach. I was coming from a GTX 760, so I thought ok sweet 970 has twice the RAM, then BAM.
    Though you picked the most confusing card to compare in this graph haha. With OC being in the title, and also testing stock and OC makes it a scavenger hunt to see if you're looking at the stock oc results, or the oc oc results.

    May not translate into gaming like that due to CPU bottlenecking and other specs since most games uses CPU and GPU 50:50 also even some doesnt support more than 2cores and is itself cpu intensive, so GPU wont help e.g. Lineage 2 ( 1 Core only ), Tera ( 2core only ), Fallout 4, but since Ungine benchmarks utilizes almost only the GPU you can clearly see which one has better performance.
    Also some game devs is partnered lets say with AMD or Nvidia, so if youre playing "AMD" game with nvidia card that is slightly faster you most likely will get less fps even your card is stronger.

    I was thinking about buying GTX 1060 when it was released one year ago. However, looking at this graphs now, it seems GTX 1060 is not really an upgrade over Radeon R9 290 since my R9 290 can overclock like R9 390. The only problem is power consumption but I think I can wait until NVIDIA release Geforce Volta.

    It might not be a popular view, but imo:
    - We need competition. So if you can (that is, if its performance is suitable for you), support AMD by buying their product (new, that is. Buying a used one was already paid for once - trivial huh).
    - If for some reason you must by NVidia, at least buy it used so that you don't put more money in their pockets.
    It's not fanboyism, it's that we badly need competition. With AMD focusing hard on the server market (with Zen / Epyc) and the AI / machine learning market with big Vega (FE), we don't want one player remaining on the gaming industry right? For GPUs. AMD could choose to stop competing altogether with gaming products and focus their investment, research etc to those other two big fields that are much much more profitable. I don't want a monopoly left in the GPU market.
