Neil Young is The MAN. He had a brief spat with Lynyrd Skynyrd after he released a song called "Southern Man", about racism in the Southern US of A. Even though Neil is a Canadian, he is a great American. Seen him live four times and each show was unique in it;'s presentation and set list. He has some really political songs in his catalog "Ohio", "Powderfinger", "Southern Man", "Welfare Mothers", "Needle and the Damage Done". and also some beautiful Love songs, "Harvest Moon", "Lotta Love",, etc. Best thing ever is his concert film "Rust Never Sleeps", directed by Neil from 1978. It features Neil solo and with his main band Crazy Horse. Neil plays Guitar, Piano and Harmonica in the solo parts at the beginning.
yes, that is him on lead. I saw Neil in concert back in 98, he did 10-11 songs, and the show was 3 hours. He would lock into a solo and improvise for 15 20 minutes on some of the songs.
The story about the Lynyrds and Neil was because of his song " Southern Man " was a heavy slashing criticism about slavery and racism. Skynyrd responded in Sweet Home Alabama " Well, I heard Mr. Young sing about her, Well, I heard ol' Neil put her down, Well, I hope Neil Young will remember, A Southern man don't need him around, anyhow " The thing is they were both fans of each others music. Ronnie Van Zandt use to wear a Neil Young t shirt on stage many times.
This song rocks out and brings me back to my freshman year of college in 1969. This is one of the great songs from the classic age of rock. Neil has so many fantastic songs to react to and as a member of CSNY. His "After the Gold Rush" and "Harvest" albums are up there with the best in rock.
Neil Young is a living legend and Ronnie Van Zandt wore a Neil Young shirt on stage on several occasions it wasnt about hate but respect despite differences of opinion
Neil Young had an amazing album called, “After The Gold Rush” it had his song “Southern Man” which is about American human slavery. A sore subject with some.
One of Neil's best. The rhythm guitar was played by Danny Whitten. His heroin addiction reached the point where Neil fired him. Danny subsequently OD'ed leaving Neil wracked with guilt (Neil's take, not mine.) A few months later Bruce Berry, one of his roadies, also OD'ed throwing Neil into a tailspin that culminated in his album Tonight's the Night. The title track explicitly deals with the two deaths. As for Skynyrd Neil & Ronnie Van Zant were big fans of each other. Ronnie often wore a Neil Young t-shirt on stage and Neil gave him maybe his greatest song to record. Unfortunately Skynyrd didn't get to record Powderfinger because of the plane crash and Neil released it on Rust Never Sleeps.
This is Neil Young with his band Crazy Horse. Remember the word Rust for future reactions of Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Young wrote "Cowgirl in the Sand" while he was suffering from the flu with a high fever at his home in Topanga, California.
Yes! Neil and Danny Whitten original leader of Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse put out 1 album before getting with Neil. I happen to have it and you will want to hear it! When Danny died of an overdose it had an understandably devastating effect on Neil and the band. Neil spoke of all the great art that never came out because of heroin. So glad you are discovering all this great music and poetry!!! Peace 😊
Neil Young is great, definitely go his rabbit hole, I saw Neil Young with Stephen Stills in concert, Neil is an awesome guitarist and his voice fits his songs, if you listen to CSN&Y live album Four Way Street, all songs are from all 4 individual artists, same with Deja Vu, although Neil is definitely my favorite of the four of them! After The Gold Rush is my favorite album from Neil
Wife here. I am so jealous of you getting to hear Neil Young for the first time ! I loved him from first time I heard him. Keep going lots of great songs. Enjoy
Decades since I last listened to this song, 2 maybe 3 . A huge fan back in the day and his music with Crosby, Stills and Nash, 🎶Time for me to look up their music again and give it a listen once more. 🎶Thank you for reacting to this song, took a trip down memory lane that I will continue.☯☮

Huge, huge, huge library, and every album completely unique to each other. He can go from just him and an acoustic guitar to hard rock: he’s often referred to as the The God father of grunge music. Rockin’ In The Free World is even harder.
I'm sure someone else has commented that the Lynyrd Skynyrd lyric is a reference to Neil Young's song, Southern Man. They wouldn't have referred to it if everyone didn't know what they were referring to. Take a listen!
Who doesn’t want a Cowgirl in the sand! I got mine 47 years ago. Think of her every time I listen to this song! Hate his politics, love his music! 😎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Got to say it has been such a great ride listening to music of this caliber since the early 60s, but watching these reactions makes me feel like I’m now witnessing Rock &Roll ActII. ✌️❤️🔥
Serious recommendation here: Look up the song Southern Man from the live album by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young that's called 4-way Street. It's a long version, with some great guitar work between Neil Young and Stephen Stills, and it's just a phenomenal song, both as music and as social commentary. After that you'll fully understand the reference in the Lynyrd Skynyrd song. Oh, and there's a great acoustic version of this song on that same live album.
Also; Neil Young's catalogue of recorded music crosses multiple genre and is very deep. He's kind of Canada's version of Dylan, as far as songwriting is concerned.
You've got a real feel for music, the way you respond to every nuance of the instruments in this song -- especially Young's guitar playing. It's not given to everyone to respond this viscerally, good to see. Look forward to your future encounters with this rock genius
Must check out the 1971 live version of Southern Man when he was with CSNY. That's the song that Lynyrd Skynyrd is refering to in their song. There's some epic guitar work between Neil and Stills.
I love to hear Neil Young's tenor vocals; I could listen to him all day (And sometimes I do 😏) he has an amazing collection to go through. Here's another suggestion, if interested. "Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cinnamon Girl (Live 1991) in real HD"
One of the greatest musicians overall in the past 55 years!if you want to react to Neil’s guitar rockin’ style then Like a Hurricane is a great choice . If you want a country side to Neil then Cones a Time or Old Man would be great.
Ronnie van zante brilliant singer who tragically died in plane crash along with other members of Lynyrd Skynyrd is on you tube concerts wearing a Neil Young epic t shirt for Neil's best album To Nights the night .They were good friends .😅
Neil's guitar playing has always been underrated and overlooked. Songs like "Cortez The Killer," "Like A Hurricane,". and "Down By The River", or 'Keep On Rock In The Free World" are all outstanding. "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" from the album Rust Never Sleeps is a powerhouse. Give these a try, you'll be so glad you did.
The "spat" with Skynyrd was iver two of his sings, Southern Man feom After the Gold Rush and Alabama feom Harvest. Yiu should do them both as oart if ine review. Alabama is actually the better song. Neil has been writing songs describing the murky, confused and frustrated state of mind brought on by failed relationships for about 50 years now. Often, like in this song, that state of mind is an actual place ("is this place at your command?"). Nobody has ever done it better. One more edit... you should check out Like a Hurricane if you want to hear a very eccentric, passionate example of the murky universe that his romantic life existed in.
YOU COULD JUST ALWAYS TELL THE GREATNESS THAT NEIL HAD SHAWN 😊HE WAS SUCH A UNIQUE PLAYER THAT HE CREATED HIS OWN SOUNDS, HE NEVERRR WANTED TO TRY AND COPY ANYBODY, NOT EVEN DOING COVERS THAT HE DID! 👍 YOU GOTTA DO THE LAST TRACK ON HARVEST ( WORDS BETWEEN THE LINES OF AGE )
He described many songs on the album jacket of Decade, this one was short " great tune but hard to explain to my wife". The beach would have been Zuma or therabouts, in SoCal.
Neil grew up listening to a lot of country music, courtesy of his father. He is hard to pigeonhole as a musician - his library spans coutnry, folk, rock, and experimental. Most of all, he is one of the finest songwriters in music history with a subtle understanding of creating minimalist rock and roll. I've been a huge fan since this album came out. In this album, you hear him with the quintessential backup band in Crazy Horse.
"Deja Vu" by CSNY is one of the defining albums of the 1970's. Check out "Country Girl" or "Helpless" for Neil's stuff, but actually every track is incredible. Not for nothing are these 4 musicians regarded as legends.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, released a song that Neil wrote called SOUTHERN MAN....better, ease your head, don't forget what your good book said... Skynyrd being from the south and Neil being from Canada, they were jokingly tell him to stick to Canada politics.

Mean while David Crosby teamed up with Gene Clarke, Michael Clarke, Chris Hillman, and Roger McGuinn to form the band, The Byrds. Also at this time Graham Nash was a member of the British Invasion band, The Hollies. Now Crosby, Nash, and Stills met up at Mama Cass' house in Laurel Canyon in 1968 and after discovering how phenomenally well their voices blended, they formed the supergroup, Crosby, Stills, and Nash. They have gotten back together several times, cutting an album each time, but never for very long.
Stephen Stills did NOT suggest him, Ahmet Ertugen did. He was asked to join because they needed someone who could play keyboards. Nothing to do with Woodstock.
The Neil Young song "Southern Man" from his After The Goldrush lp was what Lynyrd Skynyrd took issue with. Without understanding that it was written for an unproduced movie.

The rhythm guitar and bass carry the tune while Neil goes off on the lead guitar. He's a great guitar player.
