Neil Young is a huge talent especially from the 70’s and I’ve seen him live twice, he just writes songs as he see what’s happening in the world during that time period; I’ve been to Alabama and Mississippi and still today racism is prevalent and KKK still exists
I think it was on Howard Stern that Neil said Southern Man really should have been White Man...As people here have posted the rift was more of a media and fan thing. There was a tour circa '77 where Ronnie VanZandt was wearing a Neil Young tshirt from Tonight's the Night... in the liner notes of Decade by Neil he mentioned he was in the works of having Lynyrd Skynyrd cover his song Powderfinger and on a second pressing of Sweet Home Alabama Neil stated he loved the song and that because of it his name would live on.
Last year Neil Young and Crazy Horse released a new album called "Barn", recorded in the same barn as this album on Neil's California Ranch, Broken Arrow. Another song by Neil. He really writes what he knows .BTW, Nils Lofgren, of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, is the replacement Guitarist for Frank "Pancho" Sampedro, on "Barn". Neil and Ronnie Van Zant were never really at odds with each other, they did let the media build it up a bit, but they respected each other tremendously, and wore each others T shirts in concert, to show solidarity.
Neil Young's Alabama was recorded in 1973 and probably written well before that. Your review is in 2023... 50 years later. Keep that in mind. Everything has changed since then.
So glad you reacted to this because there are no reactors who do. This song is brilliant because the metaphor is Alabama's Cadillac is their way of life of segregation and oppression which was coming to an end, and the wheel in the ditch is them stuck in that way of thinking while the wheel on the track is in direct line of the oncoming train of progress that they resist. I think this is actually what Skynyrd probably heard along with Southern Man, but this i think is a better metaphorical song. Thanks man. I'm following you because you react to a wide variety. Keep up the great work!
DEEEEP ANALYSIS, I LUVVV IT!!!👍😊AND ALSO SO YOU KNOW GIB, IF YOU DO THAT 77 FREE BIRD CONCERT CLIP YOU'LL SEE ( RONNIE ) WEARING A NEIL YOUNG T-SHIRT CAUSE THEY WERE FRIENDS AND NEIL'S MUSIC INSPIRED HIM! 😊
Racism in Alabama was a huge issue for many, many years. Look up the history and the song will make more sense to you. Ironically, I’m listening to a book about this ! It’s pretty awful how black people suffered in that state. I don’t want to start a race debate here ~ it’s simply the history of what happened there. And you can always count on Neil to address an issue.
THE RESPECT NEEDS TO BE EARNED SHAWN, IT'S NOTTTT AUTOMATIC! :) I HAVE 18-40 YEAR OLDS AT WORK ( WALMART ) THAT LOOK UP TO ME EACH TIME THEY SEE ME SO, I'M FULL OF YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND LOTSA KNOWLEDGE IN MANY WAYS :)
HERES ONE SHAWN, THE LAST TRACK ON ( HARVEST ) 😊WORDS / BETWEEN THE LINES OF AGE 👍JUST SUPER GUITAR WORK AND LYRICS AND JUST A GREAT SONG, I SEE YOU LIKE NEIL ALOT SO, VERYYYYY COOL!!! 😊
If you find the time, please give 'Cortez The Killer,' Down By The River, and Cinnamon Girl a listen. Also, the live version of Hey Hey My, My, Into The Black (from Rust Never Sleeps). It was the song Kurt Cobain referenced in his farewell note before his death. Tragic, Neil was one of his Idols. "It's better to burn out than it is to Rust (Rust Never Sleeps). It may help people who need to find mental health. Suicide, Hate, and Racism need to be confronted and ended.
HEYYYYYY!!! 👍😊 I SEE YOU WERE REALLY INTO WHAT WAS GOIN ON, SO COOL GIB!!!😊AND THAT'S HOWWWW IT WENT 💯 : SOUTHERN MAN, ALABAMA, SWEET HOME ALABAMA AND BY THE WAY THIS IS OFF OF HIS EPIC MULTI PLATINUM 72 GEM ( HARVEST )😊
I was born in Alabama. I left as soon as I was old enough to get out on my own, and will never go back. If you look at the politics in Alabama, it hasn't changed much. This mentality is taught at an early age, so it's ingrained in their DNA. Some of the most arrogant people on earth live there, and no reason for it from what I saw.

Most of the Harvest album was literally recorded inside a barn on neil's property. That's why the atmosphere is so unique.
More Barn!

History and really at the time in real time Neil was shown to be correct. Neil was just looking at history, Van Zant was just responding emotionally.

I think I wore out that 8-track. I can still remember all the words to every song. Old Neil Young got me through some tough times.

I play this all the time! Total fav song and album! ❤️🎶
I love the guitar here, such a great tone and the phrasing of it.
Great reaction 👏👏 👏
Barn music. I like it. More barn.
Yes, good comments, and Neil Young was always concerned about what was going on in the world.
Nice to hear some good experiences from Texas. Nice review of this song.

Great channel! More NY.
Young got some kick back on that song from the song, Sweet Home Alabama.
Lynyrd Skynyrd answered with sweet home alabama
no doubt Neil got some kick back ,
but he pulled through it and had a great career.

You gotta hear Southern Man from CSNY’s album 4- Way Street, it’s 💯 better and it’s also live audio, with Neil and Stephen Stills jamming 🎸
Would love to get your take on 'Cortez the Killer'. Neil's heart is in the right place, but as I recall his history is a little off.

Southern Man is more Definitive
One of Neil Young's most overrated albums, a few great tracks, but also some of his worst, this being one of them
This one being one of Neil's best Along with the other 1200 plus
