Yea, here the GLS is a full size SUV. The Escalade is like an XXL SUV, it's always hilarious seeing one of them here on the Autobahn, they dwarf our E63s completely and I always thought our car is long and wide!

I can appreciate the German engineering and refinement but that Escalade really is badass. Love that red and black colors and the GTFO of my face look of the whole thing lol. Man, add a positive displacement (roots) blower to that 6.2 for a couple hundred more HP and it's about perfect!

Me too! And honestly for like 100k the GLS is just so. Underwhelming. I’m not one to spend that much on a vehicle anyway. I’d rather buy more properties to rent out. But at least the Escalade gets you that road presence, high end, masculine, bold, luxury feel. The GLS, yeah it’s a high end suv I didn’t think it was over 50 or 60k until I looked up the price.

I personally will still take the GLS, but I will admit the Escalade has a more stronger, aggressive, masculine and menacing presence!
The backseat flipping down into the TV screen in the Escalade is sort of a dealbreaker for me from an engineering standpoint, but I think I can get past that.
I own the GLS 580 and it's a beautiful vehicle especially the tech and ride is really nice.
Escalade's dash looks 100 times better. One of the best looking panel on the market.
The escalade is practically a mobile home for 1 and sometimes 2
And the GLS is like a submarine for the family.

Richard Hammond is 1.68m (*edit:5 feet 6 inch for Americans) tall. Escalade is 1.93m (6 ft 4in) in height. I am guessing that hood is about 2/3rd the height of Escalade which is around 1.28m(4ft 3in). Hammond wins by a mile. 👏🏻

As a GLS 550 owner who thought about going Escalade... after test driving one there was no comparison. The Escalade seats are simply not comfortable.

The car to car conversations are so much better without the bias and play-acting. I'm not bad mouthing the Top Gear trio but Throttle House has a more natural and less scripted atmosphere.

The third row was not a fun place in the previous gen Escalade. That’s the big room difference plus the extra 8 inches of cargo space behind the third row. A lot of people have complained about those 2 things.

As a leather aficionado, the escalade platinum is all leather (no vinyl) and the leather on the seats is semi aniline. The GLS you have has a vinyl dash and door panels and "standard" leather on the seats. Both the escalade and the GLS come standard in their base trims with vinyls seats though. The GLS can get full leather interior, but it costs quite a bit more.
Probably the typically treated automotive leather, not vinyl. Vinyl is an artificial material that was fashionable in the 70s

Mercedes Didn't go too far with the GLS580 because there's a 63 and a Maybach version. You can't compare the high end Escalade to ''base'' Gls!

As an S-Class owner your summary of the GLS is how I have always felt about the GL/GLS, it's the top of the SUV line and priced like an S-Class but it's nowhere near the S-Class in terms of ride or amenities etc. To me an SUV will never ride as well as a car. Personally in the non-insanely priced premium SUVs I would go for the full size Range Rover first and the X7 next.

@@DefinitelyNotEmma The Cayenne drives the best in terms of sportiness and handling but the big Range Rover is closest in comfort and ride to something like the S-Class. Also the Cayenne is kind of ugly. lol. I had a couple Escalades in the past and they are good for towing and carrying a ton of stuff and people. The new one is very nice, haven’t driven it yet though so I will have to see how it is.
I get what you mean but it wasn’t that fair in this video as they had the fully optioned out Escalade but they didn’t option out the Mercedes not even with the Napa leather the headliner the executive package atleast a colored interior, the AMG line package with the steering wheel or e active body control which makes it ten time more comfortable than the Escalade..no night package not anything

I don’t get why Cadillac invested so much to produce the exclusive and more powerful Blackwing TTV8 only to let it go to waste in one car, that’s currently discontinued in the American market!!😤😤 The Blackwing would make the Escalade stand out more from the Yukon and Tahoe...I just don’t always understand GM....

Great episode. I'd take the GLS any day even though the Escalade has that big badass presence. I drove a previous generation Escalade and found the ride to be jittery and it had horrible bump steer. It was quiet when cruising and the 6.2 sounds great when you step on it but for the price that ultra refined feel isn't there.
Get in a redesigned one. It’s nothing like the previous generation.

The GLS doesn't look special enough. It needs to have a fine luxurious leather interior.
The GLS is the worst in segment. It's nothing but a glorified E class. So many of it's interior bits are shared with the A and C class and it's interior quality is the worst in segment. Even the E class has much better quality than the GLS. The Escalade and the Navigator are the best full size luxury SUVs.

It's looks isn't worth $100000 at all. Even the interior is terrible too. People who are buying it are just fools and only want that Merc badge. The Escalade is far better than the GLS and I would pick it anyday over the Merc. At least the service bills will be much cheaper unlike the Germans.

The GLS is based on the S class platform! Whether it looks or has the quality of an S Class is another matter. I personally would buy the BMW X7 which is based on the 7 series platform and has quality to match.
I do like the Escalade but is impractical on the UK, better suited for US, Canada and UAE. The European alternatives are better for UK.

Absolutely, and they are very capable off roading. Escalade has nothing on the GLS on that at all.

None, let’s talk about 3rd row space which is the entire selling point of these behemoths, the escalade has much more 3rd row room and Hauls more and much more comfortable, GLS is just another soccer mom crossover while the Escalade is a Pimp mobile.

Honestly, the GLS Airmatic suspension isn't really that bad without the E-ABC. I own the GLS 580 and driving a while with that suspension tends to break in and it gets better over time. Hearing your vehicle is just a review car tells me that you're experiencing the vehicle too early enough that the suspension hasn't mellowed out after miles and miles of driving. The Escaldes suspension is by far performing little bit worse than the GLS as what James mentioned is right.
One thing nicer about mercedes is after 3 or 4 years people cant tell you have an older model vehicle. Soon as Cadillac has a new model out the old ones look out of style.

Sold Escalade and waiting on our new GLS... Escalade is nice we had a fully loaded one 119kUS MSRP and no rear seat shades.. Its cool but for 119k id like to feel a bit more distant then a tahoe and denali. Also that V8 was brutal 9-10mpg as we did mostly city driving. Looking forward to the GLS luxuries and V6 MPG. :)

I’m buying the Escalade for it’s ride quality and driving experience. It still feels like a truck, but the smoothest and quietest truck-frame vehicle I’ve ever driven. I love how it has a genuine 4WD system similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and can tow a remarkable amount of weight. The seats felt very, very cozy as well. The car in general fit me like a designer glove, tailored to fit me perfectly. I also like love high it sits, and how many people I can pack in.
