- Professor Jim Al-Khalili traces the story of arguably the most important, accurate and yet perplexing scientific theory ever: quantum physics.
The story of quantum physics starts at the beginning of the 20th century with scientists trying to better understand how light bulbs work. This simple question soon led scientists deep into the hidden workings of matter, into the sub-atomic building blocks of the world around us. Here they discovered phenomena unlike any encountered before - a realm where things can be in many places at once, where chance and probability call the shots and where reality appears to only truly exist when we observe it.
Albert Einstein hated the idea that nature, at its most fundamental level, is governed by chance. Jim reveals how in the 1930's, Einstein thought he'd found a fatal flaw in quantum physics. This was not taken seriously until it was tested in the 1960s. Professor Al-Khalili repeats this critical experiment, posing the question does reality really exist, or do we conjure it into existence by the act of observation?
Elsewhere, we explore how the most famous law of quantum physics - The Uncertainty Principle - is obeyed by plants and trees as they capture sunlight during the vital process of photosynthesis. Could quantum mechanics explain the greatest mystery in biology - evolution?

The three where promptly arrested for public intoxication, it was fine with Heisenberg having reliezed stasis is not possible therefore he couldn't actually be there, shroedinger called his yes man to bail him out who thought it best not to acknowledge he was in jail to decrease the posiblty of it happening, and ohm was so shocked they couldn't keep the cell locked and just walked out

Wished I would have had an amazing professor like Prof Al-Khalili. My physics prof was a total toad, and really unhelpful. I don't know how I missed this video until recently. Both parts 1 and 2 are utterly fascinating. And why are people giving this a thumbs down, for God's sake???

Einstein was a weasel who was seriously lacking in common sense. He was dishonest. He never nearly understood physics/physical experience.
Always knew there was something special about Robins. I used to fish a lake at the same spot every time. I met a Robin every time I went and over time it came closer and closer to me as i fed it some of my maggots. Eventually, after about 3 months it used to hop onto my hand and eat the maggot i offered it. I know it was the same bird every time as male Robins are territorial. Feeding this bird made me feel so close to nature and i feel it was one of the highlights of my fishing experiences

Advanced biological mechanisms did not occur through chance. There is a guiding force, or an intelligence behind all life. Evolutionist have yet to produce any new life forms in the lab. The psleontogical record is incomplete. Almost all the greatest minds from Einstein on down reject random chance as a mechanism of change. Dr. Al-Khalili's science documentaries are the finest ever produced. They have no peer when it comes to presentation, depth of previously uncovered scientific/historic information and sheer (for lack of a better word)...wonder!

@airspeedmph Yes! Classic. Ground breaking. Viewed them all. But Al-Khalili goes way deeper. Greatly more sophisticated and he asks the viewer to really pay attention. He's not spoon feeding the viewer, not that Sagan ever did, but Al-Khalilki assumes (correctly) the viewer's interest is not just for an hour of "light" science entertainment.

No, he fundamentally misunderstands how receptors work. It is the binding of the molecule to the receptor that is important, not the shape. Shape is one of the contributing factors to how WELL or not a particular molecule binds, but it is not the only factor, nor is there a unique shape.

I never thought of associating smell with hearing, but then I thought of why ear nose and throat specialist combine the study and how the taste of foods aroma you can feel in the nose as you’re chewing in your mouth. The next step is a lecture about quantum mechanics then(MIT has a good one, Brant Carlson has good ones as well). And of course learning the math and maybe some physics courses before that to get used to physics and make the step to understanding quantum mechanics smaller.
Unfortunately one never understands physics fully without the math. We just can't comprehend certain things without the help of math. That's a lesson one learns very early on in physics.

Excellent videography, beautiful scenery,fantastic examples, extremely well-explained, very well simplified for a common man to understand, superb commentary. That symbolic red ball is such an incredibly smart idea! All in all, one of the best documentaries. One mistake most of the editors make is, they become too enthusiastic about their background music as if the documentary is made for the music. It would be much better to have no music at all if the editors like loud music!

There's actually a reason why the music is often so loud in these BBC documentaries that have been, let's say... "unofficially" uploaded to UA-cam:
These BBC documentaries are made and released in Dolby 5.1 sound, which has six (or really 5+1) sound channels: centre, left, right, rear left, rear right, and sub. When an episode of a documentary like this is mixed, the (mono) centre channel is where the voice over (and all the dialogue) is loudest, but it's also included in the front L/R channels as well. Whereas the music is most loud in the front L/R channels, basically the same way as with any regular stereo music track you're used to listening to.
The problem comes when someone rips the documentary from a DVD (or from some other source) and they don't know or understand that the audio track is in Dolby 5.1. What they end up doing is just taking stereo audio from the front L/R channel - which would be the right thing to do with any video with regular stereo audio. However by doing this, we end up not hearing how the sound was intended to be balanced at all. The music ends up being way louder than it should be compared to the original version, because the centre track (the one where the v/o and dialogue is loud and clear) is left out entirely. In fact the only reason why we can hear any dialogue and voice over at all is because the L/R front stereo tracks still contain some.
That's the real reason - TLDR: basically the person who rips and uploads these videos doesn't know what they're doing.
This is the best documentary by Al-Khalili and by the photographers/videographers of the documentary.

Thank you Professor Jim Al-Khalili love your presentations. The question I ask is when are we as humans going to accept the truth that Quantum Physics offers us. That is creation as we know it as the material world is only there when we measure it. Our universe is space filled with vibration all interconnected and communicating with itself , the atoms that make up our body's and all physicality is no exception to this but rather very much part of all of this.It is our willingness to align to creation by measuring particles or seeing our self as an individual and separate from every thing else that holds us blinded to the fact that we are all interconnected not only with each other but the entire universe just the same as the reflection Quantum Physics offers us as our foundational truth.
Your work is amazing. Thank you for taking the time to make these crazy concepts more understandable for everyone.

The fact that quantum effects (QE) seem to be part of nature at the level we experience is thrilling: birds migrating; cellular energy manufacture in plants. I suspect this is the tip of an iceberg and we will discover quantum effects everywhere in our everyday lives. But if this is so then why are we not hearing more about quantum effects in, say, our eyes or brains or during, for example, egg and sperm conception, for example. Perhaps our human brains are really quantum computers?

Jim Al-Khalin does a excellent job of explaining the effects occuring in Quantum Physics. I wish his explainations were presented in my college classes. An off the wall note. At 33.49 if you look at the grass you will observe white marks. They are divots or cuts made in the grass made with golf clubs and then covered with sand.

Gravity is ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy. E=MC2 IS F=ma, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Accordingly, the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches it's revolution; AS gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE; AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. It is absolutely impossible to separate gravity, inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE, AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy.

This is a brilliant documentary, both superbly informative and beautifully and lucidly presented. The quality of the communicative skill reminds me of Aubrey Manning who was an absolute master of on screen lectures filled with biological information and visuals.
Jim Al-Khalili's voice is to me the Deepak Chopra soothing voice of Physics. Great to watch documentaries and great to listening to.

Quantum mechanics is tough. Ive read books on it and studied its basics and I still find it mystifying.

entanglement is not the way they put it- entanglement shood be crooss center one positive with one negative and all entanglements in a sistem cross seme center but never like an escalator
Quantum entanglement in macro world: When you put one sock on on, say, your left foot the other immediately becomes a "right sock" no matter how far it is.

I think this approach is wrong because the socks are already left or right but in the quantum world the spins of electrons, the momentum or their position has no existence or meaning prior to getting measured. That is insane.
