As a musician guitarist myself this was the show I had been waiting for I saw the show in Detroit. It just so happens that Jeff Beck and I share the same birthday it was a magical evening in the summer Carlos played first and was just simply moved my soul the best percussion section in the business. Then Jeff came on and seemed to be in an exceptional mood he started goofing around a little bit and paced the stage with his arms up in the air so what do you want to hear now I screamed at the top of my lungs where were you Jeff and he went right into it after the song was over I was wiping the tears out of my eyes and when I looked around me so was everyone else. Jeff played it so beautiful another point of the show that really sticks out in my mind is when Jeff came out playing a Fender Telecaster and played The Beverly Hillbillies theme exactly the way it's played on a banjo. Jeff Beck can fingerpick with the best in the world. Les Paul was his friend I could go on all day about the accolades this Man has accomplished and all on his own terms. I have seen Jeff 4 times I wished I could have seen him every time he came through town anybody who has seen him will tell you the same thing once you seen him live it will be an event you will never forget. And I always say there's a lot of great guitarist but there's only one Jeff Beck. The news of his passing broke my heart.
I was at the Noblesville, IN show; August, 23rd. Carlos opened. Many people left after Carlos. The attendees were largely hippies; high and dancing. When Jeff came out it was just me and a few guitar freaks. That's it. Jeff was in a foul mood. He came around though. I made eye contact with him. I was so excited to see him. I think he appreciated my enthusiasm. To this date: the show remains one of my favorites. Fans of guitar need to see Beck live at least once in their life. The man is a musical genius and is especially magical live.
Saw this tour in Atl. ......... fucking ahhhhhmazing! Both artists were mind blowing ........ I remember Terry Bozzio (w/Beck) was like an explosion of energy .......
He's so right, when I'm sad and blue and depressed I crank up some "Flor D Luna" or "Samba pa Ti" or the entire Santana 3 album and I am inspired, rocked, spent... it's an experience that I've experienced many times. I've probably listened to that about 3 or 4 thousand times, maybe more throughout my lifetime.
Hare Krsna, Om and peace to you man. Carlos taught me how to search for the truth, I also learned Eastern philosophy bcz of Carlos. George Harrison also got me involved with spirituality. Let the music set you free.
Jeff Beck is my guitar hero and I consider him the best. But, Carlos Santana is right up there. Carlos has a sound that's like no other and will always be a legend.
What is it about you tube that makes people so angry? I'm so happy that the shows are here that I don't get to see.. I don't site around and critique them, I'm just so grateful that they are here so I can experience them. So why not take a positive approach huh?
I saw this tour - amazing doesn’t even begin to describe it. One vivid memory I have is Jeff Beck starting the song Big Block , and Terri Bozzio creating so much energy and beautiful crescendos
Check out Beck/Bozzio/Hymas playing "Sling Shot" on Arsenio Hall's show. ua-cam.com/video/JJCgORxFy5A/v-deo.html That's the highest energy 5 minutes I've ever seen or heard.
I saw the tour,it was a time when everyone was waiting so many years to see Jeff Tour again,it was amazing to see 'Guitar Shop' tour played but this Tour with added bass player Pino Pallidino,so 4 on stage. I might add I loved Carlo set as well. And they both have so much admiration for each other, and it showed in the interview!
Can't compare to each other. They are masters and virtuoso's both but it's apples and oranges. Saw this tour at the Woodlands north of Houston, TX. Awesome show.
You can't compare them because Jeff Beck is a truly unique guitarist and innovator, and a master of the craft. Carlos Santana is average at best on a good day for him! Jeff Beck is certainly a master and virtuoso - Santana is certainly neither.
I was at the Detroit show mentioned at the end of the vid. Both were great but the evening belonged to Jeff hands down.Incredible tone.No one can make a guitar go from a scream to a cry like this man does.I saw Carlos the next year with no backup band and he played and sounded MUCH better.Beck has no equal in my mind but Carlos is as unique as it gets.
Jeff Beck stole the show -- not even close -- saw them at Jones Beach that summer - Jeff's set was brilliant, great band -- I never forgot that show because Jeff was fantastic, far exceeded expectations!
Apples and Oranges, Apples and Oranges - which one taste best?I was at opening night at Wolftrap, Virginia. Jeff came on first. Two words: "Jeff Beck!"As much as I wanted to stay longer, I left after Carlos' fourth song - couldn't take hearing the same solo a fifth time. He seems to have a good heart as a person and is passionate. Love Abraxas.Different courses for different horses....
They're both incredibly soulful players but you can tell that Beck has never thought about playing on the same philosophical level as Santana; he just does it. "Inspiring people to write a better poem, make a better meal, make better love ..." Jeff is like "Uh, yeah." I suppose it's a cultural difference.
Carlos has always been a bit of a New Age screwball. Maybe too much mescaline at Woodstock. Saw Jeff way back in June of ‘72, the very day he disbanded the Jeff Beck Group and began BB&A. Went expecting to see Bob Tench handle the vocals but saw this tall, blond haired White guy, an emergency pickup from Winetka, a Chicago suburb. Jeff had a cold that night. (He told us so.) And he was having a lot of trouble keeping his Strat in tune. (The days before Floyd Rose locking tremolos.) At one point he got so frustrated he tossed his guitar over his head and it came crashing to the stage behind him. Someone brought him a new one and it seemed to work better. All in all it was a great show. Blue Oyster Cult opened followed by Argent who had a huge hit at the time (Hold Your Head Up.) Then Beck, Bogert, Appice, Middleton and the tall, blonde suburban guy closed the show.
@@CBrolley Thanks CBrolley. That's really interesting! I think the second Jeff's Beck Group is underrated, so it must've been disappointing to learn that Bob Tench wasn't singing. Glad to hear it was a good show though. I remember reading that he was looking at getting a Scottish guy - Kim something - to take over vocally but it didn't happen. Would've loved to have witness Jeff lose his temper like that; thought that stopped when he turned vegetarian, but clearly not!!
I noticed that - Beck looks like he's cringing on the inside, embarrassed of Carlos, and I can't blame him. There was a time when I was a huge, huge Carlos Santana fan - but when he played a show I caught in around 2011/12 ...? Can't quite remember , his preaching about putting Hillary up in the White House, blah, blah, blah, Obama this, Obama that ,blah, blah, blah - I just was like "What?! FUCK YOU!" . What's funny is the crowd booed his ass, haha. Not the only time he's been an over self-righteous asshole: heard him preach about staying w/one woman etc. how men shouldn't mess around etc.. - then he winds up divorcing his wife of over 20yrs to marry the chick that was playing drums for him on tour - fucking HYPOCRITE. Then there was the time he was just about to go play the Natl. Anthem in Atl. , at a sports event - got out on the field and declined due to some stupid objection he had to an immigration law enforced, by.....(* drum roll * ) Obama ! Carlos really has to rely on his band to carry him thru the songs : he basically just plays these runs and scales/modes etc... in his own way, but he's no Jeff Beck or Randy Rhoads , Van Halen etc... Never been disappointed seeing Jeff Beck - every show has been amazing. IN fact this tour , it blew my mind the energy Terry Bozzio was laying down on the drums , and it coming off the stage - just amazing musicianship!
As the Covid war rages on stealing humanitie's soul Carlos,s words mean more now than ever,," Positive acts cause positive vibrations and we all need them now !
Another thought: In hindsight, I can’t ,for the life of me , understand WHY there wasn’t a planned duo jam with the both of them during the show - I thought for sure that was going to happen, but to no avail . THAT would’ve really been special
It's an inane comment that Santana could not hold Jeff Beck's old guitar strings because Santana's music has soul, passion, and sounds good. That makes comparions irrelevant. Generally, what moves the soul is what makes music good, great, exhiliirating. If it's not stirring your soul mere demonstration of high craftsmanship is not going to move you, not going to make you cling to it. We cling to that thing in music that touches our soul. Santana's music has that soul and passion. The comparison between Beck and Santana was meaningless.
I forgot to add everyone knows that Jeff only plays with the best in the business Pino paladini on bass Terry Bozzio on drums Wowwwww!!!!!! Let me tell you Terry Bozzio is an animal 😂 as usual the whole show was nothing short of heaven on Earth for this old musician.
Awesome display of skills but the double-bill back then struck me as odd. One of them was bound to bore each other's respective fans which, in fact, Beck started sensing in Santana fans towards him. By the end of the tour he was declining to jam with Carlos....not out of resentment to Carlos, but an "F U" to Santana fans in attendance.
that's cause the majority of Santana fans are fucking ILLEGAL ALIENS (in the US) ...... and that's no bullshit , "racist" statement ....seen Santana many times , and those people act like they should be there for free !

Carlos is a cool guy, good guitarist (with a TERRIBLE vibrato) and Beck is very charitable implying that Carlos is anywhere near his league. i live in the bay area (unfortunately) so i know me some Santana. i was more impressed with Carlos' remark "i'd rather be a dishwasher and be with my family than be a superstar musician and without them." i'm paraphrasing but the guy has his head firmly "down to earth" to quote the favorite aphorism of this area!
Santana is on the same level as Jeff Beck, don't be fooled by your own delusional bullshit. Santana can play an entire concert with John McLaughlin playing stuff that Beck can't play. Beck can't play John McLaughlin's style of fusion, he's tried, but it doesn't come off anywhere near the same.
I lost ALL Respect for Santana about 10 years ago when I saw their opening show at the Mann in Philadelphia and their final show later that summer in Atlantic City.
