Jeff Beck was and will remain the only person capable of making his guitar sound so masterfully. In less than 4 minutes, he displays a breathtaking technical range that is impossible to match, which he puts to good use in a sensitive performance. The performance is made all the more beautiful by the fact that he plays it without ostentation, but with the humility that is the panache of the greatest.
No one played the Stratocaster better than Jeff Beck. Not Clapton, not Hendrix. Beck was the master. For me, this performance captures everything that he was about musically. The stage presence, the way he replicates the voice, and his absolute dominance of the guitar. Don't knows what else to say really.
They are all exceptionally good in their own way. All of these great guitarists are in a category of their own virtually. And they can all do things that the others can’t quite do.
Well said. This performance really captured Jeff at the top of his game. The dynamics, the feel and the tonality are magnificent. The thing is I've heard so much blues over the decades that frankly I'm sick of it. I typically find it boring and repetitive. But not this performance. Jeff avoids every worn down blues cliche and manages to convey a voice and style that's so damn good and so damn unique. This is my fav Jeff Beck performance.
While JB was certainly a master guitarist and a legend to be sure, and one of my all time favorite players, it’s futile to argue he was the greatest, over others that you mentioned. Suffice it to say he holds a place forever in guitar mastery!😉🙂✌️🎸😎
This was one of those moments when you are watching TV and it is etched on the brain. New Years Eve, Jools Holland’s Hootenanny and this happened. One of my favourite Ray Charles songs, and Jeff Beck did this. Could anybody else have imagined this, never mind delivered it? RIP.
Now I'm drowning in my own tears - can't believe Jeff is gone, but, he always surprised us! Big thanks to his wife Sandra for keeping him healthy and creative decades longer than most rockers
He played the guitar as close to a human voice as I've ever heard. Nuance on every note, such amazing feel, always inventive - it's all there, the wailing, the humour, the tears, the joy, the 'yeah cos it's rock n roll mate', the lot. He was a True Master. Never played the same songs the same way twice and never failed to stop growing as a musician. Great band leader too. Love this cover, there aren't many that could have pulled it off, yet alone perform it like That. RIP Jeff the legend.
what you wrote is absolutely right. jf didn‘t only play guitar, he had told us stories, feelings, poured tears in my soul with his excellent playing skills and musicality, a genius.
Great comment. I agree with every word. The playing aside- which is transcendent on this tune- his stage presence is both amusing and thrilling. Jeff knew how to be a rock star- but never took himself too seriously. I’ve loved him since I bought Truth as a 12 year old in 1971. Jeff Beck; even his name is cool. What a guitar player…
Jeff beck wasn’t just a master playing his guitar he played with his heart and soul which made him at one with his guitar and his guitar became at one with him,RIP Jeff,so sorry you had to leave us early.T and N
Absolutely jaw-dropping. This is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I’ll never hear it the same way again. RIP, Jeff Beck, a true master. We miss you!
What a musical genius!! Those hands on the strings of a guitar were magic. Nothing but Jeff and his tremendous fingers, and maybe the whammy. Would never believe that jazz on guitar could be so amazingly, perfectly preformed. Truly genius!!
They way he walks off stage looking like "hope i was good enough" after he played like the best performance ever done on a strat while the whole band is giving him applause is just priceless. Humble guy and true legend !! I will always listen to Jeff Beck !
Yes, and he was competitive too. If someone on same stage did something spectacular Jeff would get amp’ed up to go two or three steps further! And we were all the beneficiaries. At the same time he shared a stage as well as anyone.
How often does the back-up band stand and applaud the soloist in their ensemble?! It's as rare as hen's teeth. I've been a lead guitarist since age 15 in 1967, and Beck has been one of my guitar heroes since forever. He's supreme. I only wish I'd met him and jammed with him (even if I just played bongos). I would have bowed at his feet, but he would probably tap me on the shoulder and say softly, "No, you don't have to bow down to me."
The Strat was bon in 1954 but people didn't know the potential until Jimi Hendrix showed us what 'else' we could do with it. Jeff Beck is like Hendrix in the way he brings out more expressive sounds than anyone thought possible from the instrument.
@@holliswilliams8426 For most guitarists it is a gimmick. They grab it, but it really adds nothing to their playing. More a prop than anything else. Beck’s control of the whammy bar and the muting of all the strings, but the one he is playing is incredible. I believe he is muting with his fretting hand, because no other strings ring out and he can’t mute with his right hand, while using the whammy bar.
I love watching magicians because, even as an adult, the feeling I get is amazing. There's always a part of me that's amazed like I'm really seeing something that is impossible. It's like the laws of the universe are suspended and what is impossible is actually happening right before my eyes. Of course I know it's deception at its finest but I enjoy being hoodwinked just the same. I've been listening to Jeff Beck for almost 50 years now and I listen because it's always been a totally visceral and uplifting experience but the feeling is better than watching a magician because there's no deception. What I'm hearing is real. There's no being fooled here. Jeff has that ability to suspend the laws of the universe and the music he makes is genuine magic. Now, when I speak of him I'll have to use the past tense and sitting here in private knowing that there's "no going back" I'm saddened to tears. There are a very few small handfuls of modern guitarists that are more than head and shoulders above the rest. They're in the stratosphere above all others but Jeff Beck has always stood a few feet above even those greats and I'm powerfully sad knowing he isn't out there somewhere walking the planet at the same time that I am. I'm powerfully sad! Powerfully sad! I'm sad and very sorry to see you go Jeff. Thank you for all the wonder and magic. Rest Easy!
Beautifully said. He was unique, my heart is broken losing the most gentle, modest, talented, wonderful musician to walk on our earth + pull our heart strings by playing his.
@@nickypiccallo He was not "the most gentle" as you say. I'm not knocking him at all but you're quite mistaken. I've read plenty of times over the decades from people who know him that he had a wicked temper, which again, I have no problem with because I'm the same way. I'm commenting on it because it seems odd to me that people project certain qualities onto celebrities or make false assumptions as if they know what they're talking about. There's no need for that. I've seen him twice. Astonishing. He is so far beyond any kind of categorization now. Every time I see or hear Jeff, I can't help but wonder what Jimi would think.
Holy Crap! I'd never seen this before..... master storyteller, melodic when it needs to be and on fire a few seconds later. To develop ones own voice to this extent is the dream and goal of many. Leo Fender would be stunned to see what has been done with his second child.
I drown in my own tears everytime I see this video, especially since the GOATGuitarist is no longer here but his majestic music will grace us until the end of mankind. RIP Jeff Beck.
All the tones and technique and tricks you want in that clip. Using the tremolo arm, pushing the bridge, different picking and even hitting the guitar. Just beautiful to watch and listen to
Saw him with the yardbirds 1965 at The Welsh Harp bottom of the edgware road. Play a fender esquire through an Vox AC 30. Just leaning to play then almost gave up. If God played guitar would he be as good as Jeff Beck.
