  • Here's my review of the 3D Spacemouse that's made to move around freely in CAD software. In this video, we will be taking a look of the physical build of the mouse, as wall as seeing how useful it actually is when using it in 3D software like Fusion, Revit or Rhino.

If you move your right hand from the controller to the mouse, I strongly advise you to move the SpaceMous to your left hand. Working with both hands is a fundamental advantage when working with 3Dconnexion products.

Exactly, having 2 hands, it's inefficient to use one for 3 devices. Looks to me like his desk is too high and his second hand is resting and it takes too much effort to use it because of height.

Having never seen this before, it was still obvious this goes on the other hand...

This is correct. Really a mouse can do everything the Space Mouse but you aren't limited to a single degree of freedom. So a lot of user error being presented here. Where this device shines is creating flythroughs. I'll state that I was a CAD administrator and everyone was given a Space Mouse and almost everyone failed to use the device correctly. Instead the all used it as presented as a device adjacent to their mouse instead of the keyboard. So they all failed to also see the benefit. As much I tried, some of many refused to used the device as intended, and they were the ones that almost never used it afterward.
I'll state that only 3 degrees of freedom were suggested with this device. And this is wrong, their are 5. You have X, Y, Z movement but you also zoom and spin. And you can modify all of these things simultaneously. Where as with a mouse, the most you can do is 2 with that being panning in on single plane. If you want to spin, it's different action. If you want to rotate, it's a separate action from that. And usually this is a keyboard interaction to spin and zoom. Zoom is usually a mouse wheel mapping, but spinning isn't, so you'd have to normally either click top row icon to or click a keyboard button to toggle it on. So what this device actually does is replace that keyboard interation. So you're replacing a left hand interaction one the keyboard with interation with Space Mouse. Your right hand stays on the mouse.
Here's the thing, a lot of the design process is actually not clicking on things. We'd all like to think that we a most productive when we're actually creating geometry, and maybe that's true. But actually great design creation is done with intent. This means that you are not just creating the geometry, you are creating the geometry that actually works. So for much of your time, you need to verify the design is correct to the intent. This requires not only review as the design is being created, you also have peer review. And this is where this kind of device shines. Actual good design is a lot of staring at your model verifying that the intended design is being created, which means just staring at your model. And this device allows you to be very efficient during this phase of the design process. Which means that during your workday, you're spending less time staring and more time actually doing more clicking and creating geometry. This is how this device most beneficial. It doesn't save clicks, but in actual work it reduces the downtime when you aren't clicking on mouse buttons. So you spend more of your actual workday creating geometry instead of reviewing that the design is as intended.
As far as the buttons go, you really only need one of them. Being more familar with PTC products and it's use, I would say that one button should be set to move the model back to the default view. In Pro/ENGINEER or Creo this is the [Ctrl]+D shortcut. You'd map this button and it tells the software to recenter the model as it appears when the model is first opened. Honestly, you need this button mapping as just nudging the model can move it off screen and it's extremely hard to move it back to center with the device without visual cues. You can use the other button for something else, but honestly I only ever used this single button mapping.
These are great devices, but really only someone who is exceptional with modeling will actually benefit. They know that it's a waste of their time reviewing their designs, but they also know it's necessary. If you struggle with using the software, then you'll struggle using this device.

Hmmm... to change the hand that You are using for all keyboard shortcuts to a "controller" that only offers 3D navigation and 2 buttons doesn't sound like the "optimum" for 3D-programs, most of which that are known for being "heavily dependent on shortcuts"?
If anything I would have thought that a "3D mouse" could replace the "traditional mouse" since it already is used for some of the same "tasks" as the "3D Mouse" (namely "Navigation") !?

    • @mrdr9534
      @mrdr9534 Місяць тому

@@rolando_j_ Yea I can see how this device makes it easier and more intuitive to "fluidly navigate" rather than doing the kind of "step wise view changes" that You normally do with a normal mouse. But then the video, despite it's "alleged errors" got the "gist of it" correct, by saying that "it's mainly useful for visualisation"...
      Best regards

You need to use the Space Mouse in your left hand and your regular mouse in your right.

thanks for a great viideo. question - I suspect this won't do much in the web version of Sketchup? I used to have Sketchup installed but over the years I've not had commercial use of Sketchup so I really miss the standalone program instead of being forced over to the web version.

A new one may not be worth to everyone, but a second hand one at 50 $/€ is a sure thing. I got an old Space Pilot (it comes with keys to make it more useful) and it's very nice.
Unifying memory among various apps is already enough.
Mine has Control/Alt/Shift/Esc plus shortcut buttons so it goes to the left-hand.

they sold me two weeks ago a spacemouse wireless, but it has a micro USB connection and no USB C, which now is standard, I feel misled

Most people use the space mouse in their left hand. Analogous to holding a workpiece in there left hand and working on it with your right hand. It's no wonder you don't like it if you are using it like that. That's just weird.

unfortunately, the space navigator is no longer supported. the last updates were in 2020. mine now lets the pc menus scroll down on their own after a while of idling. despite having the latest drivers, there are no more firmware updates because the update tool no longer recognizes the navigator.
is there already a community solution for this?
although the support is trying to keep the product working, i wonder if products from the company are worth the purchase if at some point the support is gone although the device is robust and functional.

Mine had a similar issue once and I did a video about it. Maybe this helps: ua-cam.com/video/2NBSCwFDVhE/v-deo.htmlsi=mq3mQ7vwOCvRDDj2

The trick is to NOT use the latest drivers. I also have the older Space Navigator and had the same problems as you. They have the older drivers on their site. I'm not sure how far back you have to go, so you may have to experiment.

3DConnexion goes in the LEFT hand and the computer mouse goes in the RIGHT hand.

Yes, and since you can't move your left hand a few inches, it's always such a conundrum to decide which 5 keys to use too.

Basically they shouldn’t have used the word “mouse” in the name, and people are derpy about understanding what it’s meant for and what hand to use it with

It’s really painful to watch how it’s controlled by your right hand. It’s designed for your left hand.

You are not using the Spacemouse correctly. It belongs in your left hand. I can't imagine designing in Fusion 360 without a Spacemouse.

No computer accessory has given me more pain and headaches than this stupid mouse.
How many times its randomly decides to stop working, forcing me to go through downloading, uninstalling, reinstalling drivers every time I wanna use the thing
Not to mention their horrible customer support
As of right now, mine is nothing more than a $170 paperweight.
    Fuck this company

I still remember when they cut off support for their new mouse and deliberately did not release a driver for the new Windows at the time. I still haven't forgotten their scummy movie, even though it was in 2008.
