That is insane when you think about it. Two amusement parks in little old Brisbane, across the river from one another, going head to head. Imagine trying to do them both in one day.
So many great memories from those days ... Wag'ing school hopping a bus to the city and hanging around Tops and Play Time. Flicking through CD's at Skinnys and Record Exchange. And if you had money hitting the cinema downstairs Myer centre. The good ole days !
I was born in 1990 and when I visited the Myer Centre I hear the Dragon Coaster go around the track that was the best roller coaster at tops this is still in my history books about Myer Centre and Dragon Coaster and everything the 90S were the greatest times to see this but the Dragon Coaster moved away I thought so sad to it go so fast but I really hope they bring it where it belong in Brisbane I miss you Dragon Coaster
the place today is really a skeleton of its former self. I hope the place gets back on its feet and redeveloped. I would like to see the old Myer Centre (Uptown) to open up onto Elizabeth street and also bring some fun areas back to the place. Maybe even unlock the rooftop for bars and beer gardens. There isn't really much in the city other then just shopping, so some niche markets could really be served and fill up the old Myer space. Also the food court is very popular so I think the owners should focus more on it and make that bigger and better. Maybe even move Target into one or two floors of the old Myer space and then turn the current target into a full size coles. And then turn that mini coles space into something else. I don't know if bringing tops back is feasible, but maybe a more modern attraction like an art-vo. Also considering how dead the upper floors are maybe turning that space into innovation hubs, offices for tech start-ups, and clinics for essential healthcare services could also be a good idea. And just bring in more natural light into the centre. There you go, that's my plan to reinvent this icon.
Well the people in charge of the centre now are now going to build a 4 storey VR Zero Latency facility in place of where the Myer store used to be. It’s not Tops but a VR recreational space might be the modern attraction Brisbane needs.
Would've thought the Top 2 floors could've been taken up by Event, put at least 2 Gold Class in there plus 2 'proper' V-MAX cinemas with Dolby Atmos sound. Then they can refurbish the current Event Cinemas location next to the Funhouse Amusement Centre and replace the old flip-up cinema seats and carpet in most of the cinemas, install some recliners in the front rows including the current VMAX location.
@@RTransportGuy yeah that was announced after my comment. And Dopamineland only takes up half of level Q Myer space, the other half will be occupied by the Titanic exhibition (as a big Titanic fan, I already have my tickets for that one :)
I miss Tops and the old Myer Centre. The Myer Cafe - which had a big window so you could see Tops and watch the coaster while you ate. Sizzler, of course. The Ferris wheel - which was where Lincraft is now. The talking elevators - I swear the voice was the same lady who did the talking elevator in the old kids' show Lift Off.
Great video. I always love seeing old footage of Tops. I wish there were more videos and photos. I hope the Dragon Coaster gets restored and returned to Brisbane, even if it's just put on display. It's an important piece of history for people who lived here (especially children and families) in the late 80s and early 90s.
I wish I could find some images or video from the Tops grand opening day. My family were part of the entertainment for the event. I was in grade 11 and was a clown, riding around on my unicycle. My brother was on his 9 foot tall unicycle as well. Later, in grade 12, I worked for Myer Brisbane City store, so was a regular visitor to Tops. Some great memories of a vibrant time.
I went to Mirage once when I was 9. The old waterslide tower remained long after its closure, spurring many online discussions of people asking what it was.
Absolutely loved Tops as teenager i rode that Dragon coaster so many times and the Tree house was a favourite it was so magic up there as kid great way to spend the afternoon there was so much to do up there the Dodgem cars pumping the best of music and great place to meet girls and just have a nice time. Not to forget Metropolis Nightclub under the Myercentre near the old Bus stops
I remember taking my younger brother on the DC and we have an old photo of it, he doesn’t remember any of it of course as he was only 2 or 3 at the time, but he says it’s cool that he can say he went to it too. I also have an old LEGO Technic motorbike set I bought there once with the DC zooming overhead. I remember being left to play there for hours whilst my mum would get some shopping time alone and the ball pit was cool since the DC zoomed above it too, I remember a net being there since we all tried hitting it with balls from the pit every time it went past!
This is a great little video, the pacing of everything is done really well and you're a great narrator. Cheers from Canada and thanks for letting me learn about a bit of neat history from my Commonwealth brother
Keep up the great work . I love the old footage of Brisbane . Memories . Brisbane isn’t the same .. City centre has become rough . Called uptown more like ghost town . 😕
Remember the rocket ride with my dad. The attendant gave us a free ride as no one would on it as it was suspended on the top floor on open air. Well after we got off there was a line up of paying customers.
Wow...the top two floors of the Adelaide MYER Centre also had an entertainment precinct called Dazzeland. It also had a figure 8 rollercoaster called Jazz Junction...it was shaped like a steam train. There was also a train, dodgem cars, a carousel, playgrounds, a Lego thingy and arcade games. It was closed down in 1998.
I used to love the rides on top of the old Myer Centre. The swing ship and the roller coaster were cool. I have footage from then that I should upload.
Me and my twin sister had a birthday party here. It was so fun. Even the purple bear came out on stage and sang us happy birthday 🎉❤😂 another video topic you might want to cover is the old south bank with the rivers and mini ferries maybe...
Why couldn’t they just leave the the cinemas at the bottom of the centre and why couldn’t they just leave Top’s at the top of the centre? They should never have closed Top’s down! I loved it, especially the dragon roller coaster!
When I was 10 me and my sister were watching a kid's show with a magician in the Myser Centre and a dove flew out of the guys hat and landed on the tracks. I honestly thought it was part of the show but as you can imagine where this is going, the dragon coaster came hurtling down and absolutely smooshed the dove into nothing but feathers and guts. It was amazing.
In 1995 I first came to Brisbane city on a Schooltrip. That is the one and only time I got to go to Tops. It wasn’t until 2004 that I came to live in Brisbane and I remember being so disappointed Tops was gone without a trace. That’s the #1 thing I don’t like about Brisbane - history gets deleted too easily.
Love tops my parents took my sister n I frequently. We'd usually organised a school friend or two to come along with us . parents usually didn't know we invited them till last minute . I remember almost having the entire place to ourselves.. I recall the spaceship did have slippery seats. But didn't know a child fell out . If true.. do you know for sure ? who was it ? Thank you for your video .
Man I used to love that thing and the pirate ship used to scare the shit out off me at 25 years of age but still had to keep going on it quite a shock when a country kid from Central west nsw sees this stuff inside a shop
Brisbane is close enough to the Gold Coast. Dreamworld, Sea World and Movie World..... And Aussie World in the Sunshine Coast direction too. Tops just couldn't compete.
HEY, I JUST TURNED 50, 'HELP MEE'... I HAVE A TRUCK & FLATTOP TRAILER, LET'S GET OUR DRAGON BACK!!! IS IT IN VICTORIA? INFO PLEASE, I WILL GO GET IT 💖👍❣️
Going into the city regardless is exhausting to shop or anything, traffic is insane, parking is expensive. Better to go to local suburb shopping centres lol just my Brisbane living opinion, only time you’d see me in there is for job interviews or wagging back in highschool 😂
well this is random, i remember it like night and day, i even remember peeing my pants as a kid because i didn't want to stop playing a video game. But then noticed my footage used of area51
Went on it many many times, usually a little tipsy. Then up the street just down from Hungry Jacks was Gaming Arcade ( can’t remember it name) was a good time to be 20ish. Edit: it was dodgy Af & a little scary 😂
Haven't heard that noise of the dragon coaster for 30 years since I was a young child, thanks for posting 🙂
Same
I actually miss that sound 😢
I rode both the dragon coaster and the ship at tops. It truly was like stepping into another world as a kid.
Do you remember the lil jerk with the sharp turn where the tunnel on the roller-coaster. Loved the ride but that part always scared me 😅
I love unstuffy history of my own city. Liked and subbed.
This has reinvigorated old memories.
Jeez. So many memories! I was 16 when it opened in time with Expo '88 and loved every frickin' minute of it!! xxx Noiyce.

The fact you said wagging it took me back and made my day 😊
Thank you for the video. I always wondered what happened to Tops and the roller coaster.
Thanks for the hit of nostalgia!

@@fletchy40 Last I heard, there was an adult shop going in there.
@@fletchy40 Dopamine Land is the name of the place, and it takes the lower 2 floors of the old Myer.

Oh we tried looking! It's even more elusive than that dragon...
Great video! There was some footage I don't think I'd seen before.
Awesome job on the research .
Would love to see you do one on Amazon's at Jindalee , Mirage at Oxley and Magic Mountain down the GC
I went to Mirage once when I was 9. The old waterslide tower remained long after its closure, spurring many online discussions of people asking what it was.
There also used to be a waterpark where Hyperdome at Logan is now.
Awww, Graham on the sax!

Was there a massive slot car track with yellow track here in the early 90s?
Yes I remember that. Unfortunately I wasn't the right age to appreciate it before it was gone.
Yep there was, i ran it for a friend noel. Was the best time of my life. 18 and running a shop ahhhh the memories
