Lost Amusement Parks of SE Queensland - Part 1: Brisbane and Surrounds
Theme parks are undoubtedly a huge part of South-East Queensland's identity and culture.
Back in the 80's and 90s, a lot of Brisbane folk would have likely spent many a summer holiday at Top's, Amazon's, with the animals at Alma Park Zoo, or maybe even rode the Titan rolller-coaster at World Expo Park. Or perhaps your ancestors saw the tiger shows at Hemmant's Queensport Aquarium...
Whatever happened to these places?
While Brisbane has boasted a large number of theme parks, waterparks and wildlife centres, many of them fell in favour of the more tourist-centric areas like Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, among many other reasons.
This video is the first part of a series of South-East Queensland's lost theme parks and amusement centres. This first episode will take a brief look at the lost theme parks of Brisbane and its surrounding areas.
Chapters:
0:00 - Introduction
0:52 - Brisbane's first theme parks
5:05 - Brisbane and surrounds
6:44 - Aquatic adventurelands
8:51 - World Expo Park
11:05 - Conclusion
12:15 - Credits

The second part of our mini-series on Briz 31. (or "31: Your Local Television"... or "QCTV"... or "31 Digital"...) After years of uncertainty, Brisbane's own community station entered the 2000s with a permanent broadcast license. With an upgraded transmitter, it now had improved picture quality and further coverage. The 2000s also saw Briz 31 suffer something of an identity crisis and more thre...

While channel surfing late one night in Brisbane, you probably stumbled across a TV station that seemed a bit "different"... and that's if you got a clear signal. This TV station was Briz 31. Existing in various different forms from 1992 until 2019, Briz 31 was Brisbane's public-access television station, providing a platform for Brisbane's local community and independent producers. Released fo...

Cribb Island - Brisbane's Lost Suburb
Переглядів 10 тис.7 місяців тому
Cribb Island, or "Cribbie" as it was affectionately known, was a coastal suburb north of Brisbane that overlooked Moreton Bay. During the roaring 1920s, Cribb Island was a thriving beach destination for Brisbane locals. In the 1960s, the suburb was an early stomping ground for one of the world's most successful musical artists. On 5th June 1980, it was closed down, controversially cleared out a...

Brilliant
Well really expo was all over south bank in fact I went there a couple of nights ago and on the ferry there I saw the old sky needle with the sunset going down behind it
Yet another great video of Brissy's history - you got yourself a new subscriber, mate :)
I have lived on the sunshine coast for the last 41 years if you have any questions for your next episode.
The Springs water park in Toowoomba!
I loved Briz31. Commercial channels will never produce that amount of local programming. They will never have the same local irreverent humour. Shame on the liberals for killing community TV and doing it in such a quiet and underhanded way. Congratulations🎉 to Ibis 32 for again creating local content. Thank you for sharing your audiovisual and presentation talents on this platform ❤
Thank you!!
I went here many times as a 8 - 10 year old, it was the coolest place I had ever been. There was also a pond with multiple R/C boats and a video game arcade on the upper levels
I miss Topps :(
“The balloon deflated and almost fell into the river” … it’s just so beautifully sums up Major events in Queensland somehow.
Thank you for this video - it dug up so many memories - and hearing the sound of the dragon coaster again... just... wow!
We had a community channel in Adelaide around the same time. Was bad reception. I appeared in an interview ascwell as a commercial lol.
And now you have 44 Adelaide!
That brings back memories, the old pubs my old hang outs.expo was cool to . Thankyou 😅
the ferris wheel at the side once lost a carraige thru some shops at the bottom..maybe 97?
..missed plantation water land off the list
Love your stuff you should post on my face book page
The tree house at Tops also holds such a nostalgic place for me too!
I watched this show, and my wife voted for the drag queen on bris31
When I first discovered Bris 31 it was an experimental live transmission of a parrot (way before web cams) with phone number to ring if you were curious enough, perhaps mid 80's.
Thanks for this! I keep hearing that it existed in one form or another back in the 1980s, but can never find any information anywhere about that to confirm. Apparently UHF 31 was also used as an information channel for Expo 88? Do you know anything that could back that up?
@@IBISChannel32 I'd just gotten hold of a portable TV with a tube screen so small that it was impractical. Anyway I was playing around with tuning and at the time there were no Bris stations on the UHF band (maybe SBS on 28, not sure) but I came across this transmission on UHF31. I was curious enough and did ring the number but my memory of the conversation is very foggy. The guy was anglo, had a common name, Bob, Tom something like that and sounded at least mid 30's. Sorry I don't have any recollection of UHF31 being used for Expo 88 info.
i used to tune in
You should make some UA-cam shorts via getting little clips from your videos and making them into shorts to reach more people
remember well spent a few well early morning at Plou inn..
A nostalgic and informative video of yesteryear. Bunya Park and Bullen’s Lion Park are both missing. I’ve lived in Brisbane all my life and some of the attractions listed are new to me.
Didn’t help that half the rides at Expo were never working
Amazing video mate, some incredible footage and showcase of history. My parents used to tell me about the grass ski and bobsled in Samford, which I was too young to remember. I do remember the Woolshed water slides, that place was amazing as seen through my eyes as a child. Amazons was also a cracker to visit during my high school years. Quite remarkable how many opened and closed by the late 90s/early 2000s, I can’t help but wonder if there could be a resurgence of some sort of mini theme park much closer to Brisbane as the traffic to each coast has started to make day trips a lot longer. Oh and one I will never, ever forget - Tops in the Myer Centre. I recall a fantastic ball pit and jungle climb / fortress, that and the Dragon coaster, will never ever forget how absolutely amazing that place was. As a child it felt like I was in Peter Pans Neverland!
where was the one at Bribie?
Brilliant video! Brought back some memories
A critical piece of journalism previously unfulfilled. Kudos!
Alma Park Zoo moved from Dakabin to the Sunshine Coast and became Wildlife HQ. It is now in the same area as the Big Pineapple...this area is now being re-developed with the train ride and the Pineapple itself opening recently.
Insane video!! Thanks very much I live and grew up in Brisbane and watching this as a 23 year old, I can’t believe all of these existed!
I think what the Myer centre failed to realise was tops gave the Myer centre atmosphere even at lunch time on a Tuesday . Now I just feel like I’ll get stabbed . I used to have to catch the bus from one of the basement areas and it was putrid 99.9% of the time
There was also Bullens African Lion Safari at Yatala.
Wasn’t there a wild life safari park near dreamworld in the late 70s/ealry 80s?
Oh yeah Bullens Lion Park in Yatala.
What about the big cow north of gympie ???
Great video! I went to almost all of those places. Tops was amazing! I think it was $12 and you could go on all of the rides all day. My Mum has mentioned a mini zoo within the Brisbane Botanical gardens many years back.
Ahh Amazons. Those were the days.
Loved Tops when I was a kid! The dragon coaster and a jungle theme playground was always a highlight of going into Queen St
I loved tops too. That dragon coaster was amazing. I was so upset when it turned into a movie theatre.
And the ekka
Samford Grass Ski Park used the name Adventureland, but was NOT ĺocated at Mt O'Reilly Road - it was just off Eaton's Crossing Road north of Samford Village. It did not adopt the name until well after the original Adventureland closed.
Thanks for doing this . Quite nostalgic . Went to Adventureland a few times in my school days .
Remember the rollercoaster in the roof of Queen st Mall?
Tops! We also did a whole video on it... ua-cam.com/video/q3uqghS1ND0/v-deo.html
Nice work mate
koala town???
I'm surprised no mention was made of The Plantation at Capalaba West (now part of Chandler).
@perfidiousalbion9975 I know
Warrego water park was awesome
The Ferny Grove Waterslides were called ‘Rainbow Valley’. The Woolshed was built later adjacent to Rainbow Valley. Originally Rainbow Valley had two slides. The first was pretty slow but the 2nd had a steep incline and was briefly the fastest waterslide in the southern hemisphere. They later added the third slide which had the habit of spitting people out on a particular corner (I still have the scars).
Ahh, cheers for the info!
I worked as a ride attendant during expo 88. It was a dream job.
