The Tomorrow War is a 2021 American military science fiction action film directed by Chris McKay in his live-action directorial debut. It is produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, David S. Goyer, Jules Daly, and Adam Kolbrenner, and written by Zach Dean. The film stars Chris Pratt (who also executively produced), Yvonne Strahovski, J. K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, and follows a group of present-day soldiers who are sent into the future to fight an alien army.
Originally set for theatrical release by Paramount Pictures, the film's distribution rights were acquired by Amazon Studios due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, who digitally released it on July 2, 2021 via Amazon Prime Video. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the concept, action and performances but criticism aimed towards its derivative execution.
In December 2022, biology teacher and Iraq War veteran, Dan Forester, fails to get a job at a research center. While watching the World Cup at a Christmas party, soldiers from the year 2051 arrive to warn that humanity is on the brink of extinction due to alien invaders: the Whitespikes. In response, members of the world's militaries are sent into the future, but fewer than 20% survive, initiating a world wide draft.
After a year of the draft and a growing anti-war movement, there is little hope about humanity’s survival. Dan receives a notice that he has been drafted and reports with other draftees to basic training. Dan deduces with fellow draftee Charlie, that in order to prevent a paradox, those drafted have already died before the war starts.
The draftees are sent forward in time to Miami Beach but few survive, having been dropped in the incorrect location above the city. The draftees are ordered by Colonel Forester to rescue nearby lab personnel before the area is sterilized. The draftees discover the lab personnel dead but recover their research. Dan radios to command about the situation, and is instructed to escape the area. Many of the draftees are killed with only a handful able to reach safety.
The survivors wake up in a military encampment in the Dominican Republic. Dan is asked to report to Colonel Forester, who is actually his grown daughter Muri. She requests him to accompany her on a mission to capture a female Whitespike, which are rarer than the males typically encountered. They cage the female, only to have hundreds of males descend on their position. As the helicopter with the female lifts off, Dan and Muri escape to a beach and radio for rescue. Dan and Muri are transported to the Jumplink, located on a fortified oil rig in the middle of the ocean.
Dan and his daughter work on a toxin that can kill the captured female. They find a match for killing the aliens, just as they start to breach the base. Dan is able to jump back to the past with the toxin to mass produce it. Dan tries to give the toxin to the military so it can be sent back to the future, but learns that the Jumplink is offline, having been destroyed by the Whitespikes.
Brainstorming with his wife, he deduces that the Whitespikes did not arrive in 2048, but came much earlier. Further research leads him to theorize the Whitespikes are actually already on Earth, and that global warming caused their release when they thawed out and emerged from under the ice caps.
Dan leads a mission to Russia to prove his theory and finds an alien ship in an ice cap. The team debates telling the world about the problem, but decides to end the threat then and there. Once inside, they realize that the alien ship is not actually a Whitespikes ship, and that the Whitespikes were cargo for the deceased alien crew. They proceed with injecting the dormant Whitespikes with the toxin; this kills those injected but wakes all the remaining Whitespikes. The team successfully blows up the alien ship once they realize it is the only method of containment, but one female escapes. Dan and his father track down the female and are able to kill it in a frenetic battle to the death, preventing the future war from occurring.

The fact that he was willing to risk his own life for his daughter even after everything went to shit and they both had no chance of surviving just was such a tear jerker, it doesn't help that he saw his daughter young in the present right after seeing he getting killed but all those white spikes either.

Great scene where Chris Pratt’s character is at a total loss for options to save his now adult daughter, he’s completely bereft but still manages to say some words of kindness and comfort whilst clinging on to the last few strands of hope as he knows his daughter is dying. He knows his daughter’s anger earlier was just pain on her part and he has a chance with whatever time he has left to make her realise he always loved her.

I feel as if her death (in the other timeline) caused Dan to fall apart and leave his family, but the difference there was that there was no way to kill the white spikes.
When Dan jumped I think Muri realized that her dad loved her and had always loved - she just forgot, and Dan erased that from her head.
But he still has to live with the haunting thought that in another timeline he saw his daughter die.

What really sold this film to me was that after this great scene there is one final act. The film doesn't end immediately with him having the toxin and then a montage of clips about it being used. The film continues on! You feel the risk. But also writers were smart enough to state that they lost contact with the future. But not expanding on that point. Was it because this installation was destroyed? If so, how did he get back? They lost contact because he already stopped the white spikes. He just hadn't done it yet. We then see it in Act 3. It's smart. Star Trek or Stargate smart. As was the type of character he was... jumping in after her. The style of the film was brilliant. I really enjoyed more than thought I would by the silly opening scene.. not needed. That was only thing I would change.

Honestly, the family element wasn't needed. Chris Pratt shows no signs early on that he is dissatisfied with his family. He was only angry because he lost his chance at getting another job.
As far as time travel movies go. This one seems to try to make the most sense of time paradoxes. The only major flaw is that you will never get the serum without going back, but aside from that I guess the other events are possible (in the most fictional sense of the word lol)...

Everyone - Aw so emotional .. go him for jumping after her
    What actually happened -
He daughter was dying .. queen grabbed her to the water … dude have the cure and daughter told him “go to your timeline and save humanity”
Instead he jumps into a pool of monster …
    Yup.. Starlord all over again
Instead .. here the director didn’t wanted another Infinity war stupidity so he made Starlord 2.0 survive
But his idiocy of almost dooming man king in the past is forgiven
Cause he had a nice daughter moment talk
Yeah .. remember .. You can do Anything stupid in life
    “Make building blow up”
    “Destroy the cure for cancer”
    Etc
Do it … but u must have a wholesome Daughter and father talk … that way all ur idiotic mistake that killed a bunch of humans is forgiven
Cause the internet will love you act of kindness and wholesomeness towards your daughter.

what the hell are you even trying to say 😭
all i got from this is the same thing i got from other comments saying “he basically doomed the world by jumping after his daughter with serum in hand 😐”
now let’s think about this for a second. when in the futue and everything around you is falling apart, and you’re with your daughter that’s an adult at this time, DYING, wouldn’t you be desperate to bring her with you and save her? despite having a daughter in your present who is a child, it’s still devastating to know that in a future later on your daughter will die to upcoming events. when she let go of his hand, he was emotional and not thinking clearly, so desperate to the point that he was willing to jump after her and grab her hand, hoping to bring her back with him into his present. obviously, this wouldn’t work! not only does she not have the time traveling thing on her arm but she also exists in his present, meaning there would’ve been some type of consequence had he brought her back with him. but again, in a desperate fatherly need to save your daughter, you’ll do anything. even if there’s no point in doing it. even if you know you’ll fail. even if the odds of succeeding are literally 0. and in the end, in his present, he managed to save her and the world from a terrifying future.
this came out a whole lot longer than intended 😟.

Sadly this movie had one MAJOR script flaw that made the movie un-watchable. In the movie it was said that the toxin the first had would, "make a mess of the males." Now since the males made up all of the attacking forces, and the Queens were "rare" to see. A logical person would say "Hey let's just spray every area to kill all the males and then we can track down the Queens." However, the stupidity of the future scientists rivals the stupidity of the scientists in Prometheus. An everyone in the future has to die because of the stupidity of their "smart" people. To make matters worse, when they return from the future to face the original white spikes, they choose to kill males first. When in fact if you kill the queens the remaining white spikes would eventually die off, but NOOOOO. Proof that Hollywood either does not care about good movies or they just think everone is as dumb as posts.
