yep!, they are usually gear type pumps too!, good to have them since a startup without oil pressure puts a lot of load on heavy machinery and engines! Whenever I start my friends big Ruston diesel its another story, grab the primer handle and crank like mad until you see pressure, then go another 60 seconds :D
When I made mine with automotive heater hose I only left a small gap between the two shafts . Reason is a hose could twist in between the two shafts. Probably a piece of steel braided hydraulic hose would eliminate that problem. also you mentioned sludge in the bottom. On my suction pipe I put a 90° elbow and a pipe six inches or a hands length and drilled small holes on only one side of the short piece of pipe. Then a cap on short piece , the holes drilled only on one side of same pipe are pointed upwards when I lower the suction pipe in. This way it always pulls in from the top and doesn't suck up the sludge from the bottom nor does it disturb the bottom. A simple picture would make plenty of sense. But simply a long pipe with a 90 on bottom with a short pipe with holes facing upward and a pipe cap at the end to heep out big stuff like cigarette buts or any big trash.
Hi ed' Nice little oil pump mate ;-) works well. It soon emptied that barrel lol I found a nice hand cranked one that has the thread for those barrels. It works too. No leaks ;-) the chap at the scrapyard only charged me a couple of quid for it. So I cant grumble at that lol. Im going to use it for my minerel oil. But it needs a good cleaning out first ;-) Thanx for sharing mate. THUMBS UP☆
Haha, I was waiting for a comment like that ;). I tried to leave the "stupid" away. It might have been wrongly interpreted by some people. My colleague says it all the time, when I start talking about "complex" things... Thanks for your comment!
Ha ha i can see that quickly becoming a permanent fixture :-) I thought you would use an old fishpond pump to recover the oil, then give the pump a burial by fire lol :-)
cool setup...but whats really got me intrigued is how your controlling the speed of the motor... pump - simple...motor - simple dc....control unit - box with knob - how does that work???
dude, what do you do for a living are you a mechanic of some description or sparky? you seem to have good knowledge of the things you acquire. curious is all.
I love it when youre searching how to solve a problem and one of your favourite channels has already covered how to do it :P

That flexi hose coupling idea is killer, I'll be using that one day. I guess for heavy duty work a piece of hydraulic hose would be the go. Thanks

i really liked this video, it was fun.
bit of fine mesh on the inlet and maybe a switch to auto shut off when it runs dry you got a very useful unit
Great oil pump project and it works very well.
Good job Ed, hackery at its best.
Nice little unit. A smaller 12V one would be a great tool for filling gearboxes.
i know, It just sounded funny when u were like "Avoid the sludge"!

yep, just re-programmed by Mechtric for basic use, not electric scooter (which it was designed and programmed for)
I did a vid some time ago, its just a Curtis 1228-2901 controller and speed pot + switch
nice work mate, love the coupling :D
the green box has a electric scooter controller inside it :D, essentially a big PWM controller
ive never seen that rubber hose trick. one day i will use it as a determinant fix
You should put a mini filter on the end of it to prevent sucking in sludge.
Nice pump, set up by the KIS rule: keep it simple.
good idea there ed. you sure are handy
nice pump glad you got it going :)
yeh, I found a small copper screen filter that would do.
I can pump gas with it, but the sparks from the brush motor make it a operator hazzard!
lol nope, there were settled solids in the bottom of the drum. a close tolerance gear pump will not take solids.
Great device. Will build one like it.
So that's going to be a temporary setup
for the next 20 years :D
he would make a killing selling them on ebay
Haha nice job!

Nice job
Can you put a more volatile liquid through there when you dont need it anymore? I was thinking something high in ether...
That's awesome
Ha ha i can see that quickly becoming a permanent fixture :-)

I would like to find one of them :D
He is a machinist

the salvage yard guy has several here ;-}
That sounded funny. Were you joking when u said " Avoid the Sludge"? it was funny lol

Hey aussie50 i have a dryer to blow up... what volts should i run to the motor?
👍
haha thats cool
1 pto sharft cover
2 it will brake your Hart
any links for 2-3 kilwatt 24volt batter charged from a 12v system
Mains. Probably mains, if it is a brush motor, I don't know how to use an induction motor w/o proper circuitry.
electric forklift motor would be better!!, last longer too ;-}
I buy it
