Nissan is responsible making many of us fall in love with cars! Their heritage dates back to Datsun and their Datsun 510 sedan and pickup truck. Then we got the Skyline and the Silvia, and from there the rest is history. Nissan went on to dominate race circuits with the Skyline GT-R in all its variants, Gran Turismo made the Calsonic R32 GT-R famous on screens all over the world. Aside from the GT-R Nissan also gave us the 240Z, 280Z, the now infamous 350Z and it’s son the 370Z. And in the drift world Nissan continues to dominate with the S13, S14, and S15. With such an impressive line-up and rich history how exactly has Nissan managed to find itself in the hole? Why is the company on the brink of catastrophe and will Nissan be able to save its impressive heritage?
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

I live in the hood. I noticed over the last 4 years, everyone has been getting Nissans. I suppose I know why now. The brand perception hasn't changed for a lot of people. In fact, many people around here are uninformed enough to clump most Japanese cars together, so Nissan and Mazda are thought to have the same reliability as Honda and Toyota. When these people see that the price of used Nissans dropping, they jump on that deal. The icing on the cake is that these older, used model Nissans look and sometimes perform identically to the latest generations due to lack of updates!

Nissan's quality is indeed going downhill, almost all their 2011-2019 cars are cheaply made, to the extent that you may think "shit, is this a korean car".. surprisingly on the other side, Korean cars are progressing so well. Altima sales were up 16% and neck and neck with the accord for December but donut "forgot" to mention that in their video. IF the plan is to cut incentives and fix brand image then Nissan will be fine. They also need a good publicists to combat the constant bias and one-sided stories coming out of the media allover. You appear to focus on the sporty side of the equation. Nissan's emphasis on sporty types was never rewarded in the market. Car enthusiasts love to look at the 1990's lineup that featured the 300ZX, 240SX, Maxima, Sentra, and Four Runner. Nissan failed to realize that their future was the Maxima and Sentra and Toyota sunk them with the Camry and Corolla. Toyota realized that there wasn't much money in performance cars and made decisions accordingly. Beyond that, Nissan made horrible decisions with product placement. Look at what the Altima did to Maxima sales. You'd be stupid not to get the Altima with the big motor for $10k less.
The sad thing is that Nissan will continue to struggle and won't be able to compete head to head with Toyota and Honda.

The poor treacherous "leadership" that has been purposely sinking the brand is gone along with their poor decisions. The fx, as much a great rep of its segment as it was, never recieved the media attention it needed and the poor styling of the pathfinder/j and q suvs is done. The cvt no longer where it shouldn't be, the transmission and the blister dash fiasco leaders...done and gone. The stuuuupid decision to not have an Infiniti pathfinder equivalent like the qx4 from 2003 until the end of the decade will not happen again. Hyundai, as much as I dont care about them, admirably worked their way by honesty, good work and reinvesting their profits back into the company which is the catalyst for good success. Idk what happened to nissan/infinti to follow such a ludicrous business model but mitsu tanked when daimler got involved also. Bad ideas, not caring and pos dishonest people will sink most any ship. Yeah, it's weird to think Nissan used to be a car enthusiast's car. I feel like most of the people who buy a Nissan don't care about cars at all, and just something affordable without it falling apart. I actually know someone who has one, but doesn't even bother to memorize the name of it, because she cares so little about cars. The sad part, is that even among that crowd, Nissan's don't really have a lot of appeal. Corolla's are already the quintessential "it just has to run car," by being admittedly bland, but also indestructible. Mitsubishi probably fell even further, but at least they have a slightly better warranty, and are about as cheap.

Love all the S13 pics! I have owned one for almost 20 years and still enjoy driving it often!!! It was such an under-appreciated car in the 90s but it is very loved now. I am a retired Nissan employee and saw the many events you documented happen firsthand. I think the CVT disaster was the biggest mistake because it threw away Datsun/Nissan's main DNA of having rugged powertrains!

Absolutely right about the Hellcat. I've thought about contacting Nissan about my truck. I have a 2007 Titan. I had a really cool hood put on and painted to match the truck. It has dual scoop openings. I put aftermarket rims with larger wheels and attached "NISMO" hub stickers. I put Nismo decals with racing flags on the side below the "Titan" emblem and "Nismo decals on the on the door handles. I also put an aftermarket grille on the front with a "Nismo" emblem, and to top it off, I put a "Nismo" racing decal across the top of the windshield. When I took the truck to have dual exhausts put on, I found out that it had a weird configuration where it already had dual exhaust in the form of a dual muffler with two pipes going in and one coming out. The guy had to remove the whole thing and put two Thrustmasters on, but I didn't have to mod the computer and it runs great. I added a cold air intake, which makes it sound like it's supercharged and ads a little horsepower, especially since the intake filter sits right underneath the output where the dual scoop intakes lead to. The point being that Nissan made their little Desert Runners and off road edition trucks, but they never thought about a Nismo edition Titan? Come on, there are plenty of people out there who would buy that. I love my Nissans and I've always said that if I won the lottery, I would be content to buy the nicest edition Titan, fully loaded. Now, I'm thinking I would buy a Ford Raptor Shelby edition. Nissan has had so much potential with the Titan but they dropped the ball. You also didn't mention the XTerra. I have a 2005 XTerra that had a radiator defect and somehow the two/three radiators contaminated each other and the transmission fluid, engine oil and coolant all got mixed together. by the time I got it to my driveway the engine was knocking. I had it towed to a transmission shop where they put in a rebuilt transmission and modded the coolant system. It runs great. you'd never know the engine was knocking that night. From 2005 to 2015 they didn't change much in the XTerra - once again a missed opportunity. A Nismo edition XTerra would have been bad-ass.

You’re supposed to lease the car with the option to buy the whole car at a lower price at the end of the lease. Financing outright is not a good idea most of the time, since you’re buying a lot of the car upfront, a fraction of which, will be lost in value the moment the car rolls off the lot

    • @jasonhuntermark4884
      @jasonhuntermark4884 4 роки тому +14

GameBoyKolor it’s true that you loose value when you roll off the lot. I sell cars, and it is actually a terrible idea to lease with the intention to purchase later. Due to the fact that leasing is based of a residual value, and that residual value is what you pay at the end of the lease if you want to buy that car out right. This residual value 99% of the time is more than the market value of the car at the time of post lease purchase. So if you have the intention of buying it, your better off buying it and putting 10-20% cash down upon purchase.
I am in no ways trying to be a dick about it. It’s just how the car industry works, and not many people out side of the business have access to the dealership’s side of the numbers.

You're wrong, but I don't want to be a dick about it I just want to point something out:
The profit incentive for the dealer (and most car companies get more out of their finance departments than their auto ones now) for a lease is to rent you a car for more than the cost of the depreciation of the car for the duration of your rental. It is literally how that must work in order for them to make money. There is no conceivable scenario in which a rational dealer would adopt a business model of leasing you a car with an option to purchase later at cost to them vs selling you car outright. You will pay more in fees and residual value 100% of the time.

It was so dominate that it forced Australian Touring Cars Championship to ban AWD and Turbocharging, giving birth to our V8 Supercars. I looked up how good the R32 was and it wasn't just dominating in Australia, but also in European endurance racing and Japan. Clearly Nissan/Nismo knew what they where doing. If Nissan made a car like our VF Commodore SS Redline (a car that's irrelevant now, but loved by many) like they made the R32 and 240Z, people would undoubtedly go back to them

Nissan is one of the top selling brands in Mexico. The Tsuru model, known in other markets as Sentra, was the vehicle of choice for cab drivers and low income families because they were inexpensive, lasted long and were cheap to repair. However it was discovered some time ago (about 3 years ago) how dangerous they were. Basically a death trap in a can. They were discontinued soon after. That kind of tainted nissan's reputation.

  • @CoolKnigget

I think the juke was an interesting foray for nissan - versatile platform with a stock turbo 4 cylinder. Unique looks. Nismo and Nismo RS tuned versions. Racing buckets in the Nismo RS. A subcompact that could be lowered to be closer to a hot hatch or raised for offroad depending on what you want to do with it. An AWD version for people in the north (notable problem cvt and no manual for the awd). Its like a slightly more practical mini cooper or vw bug. Base model engine had 188hp. But what happened to it? Low sales and gets replaced years later by a version with even lower base performance that is going to make modification impossible. You look around streets today where I am and there are an insane number of chevy trax, buick encore, honda hrv, mazda cx30, etc. I think nissan was ahead of the curve with a fun subcompact with the original juke and has bungled it again by downgrading performance and poor advertising. I cannot recall the last time I saw a nissan advert.

Nissan's model line is old but the new product coming through and are industry leaders (their designs have been copied so much and now toyota wants to add awd to the camry). Altima sales were up 16% and neck and neck with the accord for December but donut "forgot" to mention that in their video. IF the plan is to cut incentives and fix brand image then Nissan will be fine. They also need a good publicists to combat the constant bias and one-sided stories coming out of the media allover. Truth be told, sales were only down 9% for the year with old models and cuts to incentives and fleet sales. That's not that bad at all.

I mean goodness there's a big difference when people are still driving early to late 90s 300ZXs, Sentras, and Maximas that keep on going, yet now have newer vehicles whose transmissions can go out from normal driving or even from going extremely slow over a pothole at less than 10-20k miles and that have only been on the road for three to six months (both my mother and I have had personal experiences with that with cars we've either borrowed or rented).
