Hello, subscriber from the Philippines here. My father passed away 30 years ago. I was only 17. He left behind this car, a W116 350 SE in light green color. Watching your video brought back a lot of good memories I had with him as a child. I would ride on the front passenger seat with the sunroof open while he drove. When there was an military coup that broke out in Manila, 8 of us rode in this car and travelled north. It sped through national highways, trekked rough provincial back roads, crossed rivers and traversed through mountain passes without missing a beat. The car has been sitting in our garage since 1998. Thank you for this video. It has inspired me to restore it back to its original condition.
I can imagine that if you were to bought a brand new Benz back in 1972 it could realistically last you a lifetime. And I don't think you can buy car like that today.
Well, it's not like much of this, or these cars were not replaced or rebuilt. Gaskets, anything rubber, wood-veneer cracked when you sneezed in these W-116s, not to mention that there were only 40 or 50 moving parts. My 1998 W140 is 'Like New' and has much more creature comfort, technology, safety, power, and economy than these old tractors. Original paint, leather, dash, wood, double-pain glass, 11 speakers, etc. Will it last a lifetime? If I want it to. Oh, and armrest; standard equipment.
@dragospahontu I agree, a current Land Cruiser is yet a better car than average current cars, but then again, if you compare it to its ancestors J60, J80 or J100 series, it cannot surpass them in terms of robustness and longevity

My old boss had a 450 SEL in 1979. I got it upto 120 mph. It was dark blue and houndstooth interior as this. He told me to drive it slowly. I loved that car. It was new then and felt so special to a 22year old. Love these old Tanks
How I miss my MB 280 SEL 1975. Such a beautyfull car. Sold it 20 years ago and now I want it back :-) I am hoping for more classic car reviews. Nice work Thomas.
I would love to see this as a regular feature. Mercedes Benz cars of this period were the best. The quality control and customer service of Mercedes was second to none during this time. Mercedes stopped making quality vehicles in about 1998. Today their cars don't stand out as being anything special and here in the UK are not well rated in reliability surveys. They need to look back to their roots and start producing more reliable and better built vehicles. At the moment Lexus are way ahead when it comes to reliability and customer satisfaction. Thanks for a great channel. Your car reviews are really detailed and comprehensive. Well done.
I currently drive a new Mercedes (and I really like it), but these older model were just top class and way superior in terms of build quality, reliability and class than today’s lineup
Hands down to one of the best cars ever. Mercedes pushed the auto innovation forward and is still one of the leaders in auto innovation !......this car should be preserved as part of German heritage. Thanks Thomas !
Extraordinary presentation. It's the same all over the world, I grew up in my dad's W115 230E 'Strich Acht', the same speedometer reached 200. I used to have a W201 190E 'Baby Benz', the best car I've ever owned, a totally bulletproof, totally satisfying car. With the same speedometer. (i kept it for 17 years). The 'normal' Mercedes sedans, coupes (and SLs), from the 1968 W114/115, up to 1998 and the end of production of the W140 S-Class, are still the best cars ever built, in the history of car manufacturing in general. Modern Mercedes' cars don't have that 'special' feeling.
My first ride in an S-class was in a W116. It was a 280S, in silver green. So this model holds special memories for me. Maybe one day I'll get to own one.
Growing up in the 70's and 80's in Ireland I remember these cars with great affection. You had to be loaded to own them so I was always jealous when I saw them. They also had them in unique colours as well while the other brands had bland flat colours. They were so well made but like all cars back then rust was a nightmare. This car is simply stunning and I would be grinning ear to ear if I had one.
This car along with the 2 SL variants were the height of tech, safety and workmanship of the 20th century...will go down in history as The Bench Marks of the automobile.
So elegant and classy. Recent S Classes just don't compare in that regard IMHO. I love how Thomas describes how everything feels and sounds -- all those little things that make such a difference in owning a car and in his reviews.
Thanks Thomas what a great car S Klass with abs, sunroof, rear hand rest full equipped. Am in 30s but I love the classic MB design. Really appreciate this car too good. I would love to buy one if I had money
Great video Thomas. Such a lovely condition W116, but not surprised of condition as it's from the Daimler Classic Museum. I can see why you picked this car first, to test. Hope Mercedes Classic will give you more cars to test - an R107 with a V8 perhaps! Yes, these 1970's & 1980's Mercs are quite 'modern' and useable in today's traffic. Thanks for the very amusing Review, and also the great driving - as always, we felt we were in the car with you! Best wishes.
Spectacular idea to review the older S Class. I wish they did this in the modern cars where the exterior and the interior are co-ordinated. I remember seeing it in other older Mercedes say in green. Love the door closing sound, it’s like a vault. Thank you Thomas, and i was surprised that it was all animal free too.
These beautiful glass headlamps still look good, they didn't fog up. I've also always preferred the refractive index of glass over plastic lenses, it makes the lenses themselves seem to glitter in the sunlight in a way modern headlamps just don't really do.
5:48 You must look closely on newer Mercedes backlights Thomas. This ripped "feature" was used at newer models also. For example at the C-Class W203 2004. There is also at least 2 slightly rips. This design element was at least hinted at over several decades and was literally a Mercedes distinguishing feature.
The ribbed feature in the taillights was designed to be self-cleaning in inclement weather. The ribs were designed to channel/flush water through so that it removed dirt. It actually works. How do I know this? It was in the sales brochure from the 1982 300SD Turbodiesel that my Dad purchased at that time.
@@solid1378 Thomas gives the same explanation in the video. Mercedes probably brought this brochure with them to the appointment. However, this design feature and recognition feature was still used until the mid-2000s, although Thomas also said in the video that it quickly disappeared. But all the model series had this up to modern times from that time of.
What an icon - and I'm not talking about Thomas here 😂. Pure understated class - it's amazing how well it's aged. I love how the horizontal/vertical elements of the center console will be carried over in spirit to the next S-class. Thanks for the review Thomas - would be great to see a few more through the year of iconic cars.

Yes, I agree! The 1980s were the BEST decade for Mercedes, IMHO. The W126 S-Class (the one after this), is my _MOST FAVORITE_ S-Class of all time. The most timeless, classic, beautiful, innovative S Class of them all!! In fact, the Mercedes slogan at the time was _"Engineered like no other car in the world"_
I don’t believe they lost their way. The official statement was “our cars are over engineered” which made savings of over 1 billion pounds. So was a money saving exercise, I agree completely recent cars have not been as good.
You're right. Before it was sadly stolen I had a 1992 W124 E-class it was wonderfully engineered and reliable. If you look at the prices the old models are going up for a reason.

First of all, I want to give a huge thanks to you sir for hosting such a masterpiece of engineering, that was for you. By the way, if you managed to put your hands on this, then you are so close from hosting the all-new Mercedes Benz S-class simply because you are as special as always.
This is an excellent feature. Please do more like these Thomas. Unfortunately, automakers no longer turn out well engineered and designed cars like these. Even M-B has lost its way.
That is because so much of the buying consumer will just accept anything that is thrown at them without questioning it. Many new cars are just patched together like a puzzle that doesn't quite harmonize the sum of its parts. I am so thankful I don't have to drive one of them.🙏
I was looking at one of these on a used car lot a while ago. When i was getting out I closed the door and.... had to open and close it again just to hear that closing sound. Please do more vintage reviews!
Beautiful, when I was a kid I saw one almost every day and dreamed about having one some day. It didn´t happen, but I still love it. Modern cars are safer and more ecological, ok, but passion is gone. Thanks for the great video. Saludos.
It is in Thomas Blue! Inside and outside! Built when engineers were in charge, not the accountants. I very much enjoyed the review. Please do more classics!
Danke, Thomas.
Unsere Vorfahren waren halt in einigen Bereichen schlauer. 😗 Aber immer schön mit der Zeit gehen. 😉🤧👍

What a beautiful car, iron, chrome aluminum, without plastic the kind of engine you can work on :)by the way the door closes like a Mercedes G-class the same noise:))
Great car and classic roadtest. This car of the year is still awesome. My favourite is the most successful Super Klasse W126 (818.036 sales). I love the MB 500SE. It went wrong after the W140.
Beautiful car!! this and the W126 my two favourite S-Class of all time. I think Mercedes should really consider bringing these back into production I think there's a huge demand worldwide like myself who want that 70's 80's look! not every Mercedes enthusiast likes or desires Mercedes design language nowadays.
Thank u Thomas and all your staff for this video, for me this Mercedes is the top of the German know How, i remember when i went to Köln in 1989, i saw one like this for the first time, i was so impressed, such a good memory
You are a great presenter Thomas, I can watch your videos all day. Your attention to detail, style of presenting and knowledge is amazing. Keep going, more classics please : )
Amazing video Thomas, so awesome to see these oldies. You should do more of these. There's a current of thought that says cars from the 80/90 are better than contemporary cars. It'd be great to test those youngtimers and see if there's any truth to that.
Great presentation, I bought an old W116 350 se (27 years old) in 2003. I drove around in it as my car (wife not allowed) for 5 years. When I sold it, it was still perfect ( Madness). Of all the cars I have owned over my life, this one was the best and the one I miss most. German car production at its best. Unfortunately Mercedes do not currently make car of comparable quality any more, sadly.

I remember that the 450 versions (a rare sight, btw.) of the first S-Class were actually pretty damn fast even for today's standard.
Brings back great memories of the 70's.
No Bluetooth, no GPS, in fact very different from the cars of today!!
Many Thanks, Peace From London. 🙏🙏
I am so thankful I don't have to drive one of them.🙏
Can we have these classic reviews every Sunday Thomas?
I'll go for this one, so classic and beautiful, looks and feels indestructible. What a car!!!
I was looking at one of these on a used car lot a while ago. When i was getting out I closed the door and.... had to open and close it again just to hear that closing sound.
Please do more vintage reviews!
WBizarre I second that. Like first E and first C too
What a glorious car! It's a masterpiece!
Beautiful, when I was a kid I saw one almost every day and dreamed about having one some day. It didn´t happen, but I still love it. Modern cars are safer and more ecological, ok, but passion is gone. Thanks for the great video. Saludos.
love the attention to sounds in the interior. Also, more old cars!

Blue interior looks really fantastic. I was surprised how good it looks inside and animal free, wow.
This S-Class remembered why I love cars.
A wonderful trip down memory lane. Thank you, Thomas.
My father owned a 380sel for 18 years. Sold it locally where I was able to see it running for many more years. Slow and steady wins the race.
It is so nice to see this channel grow over the years, always consistent and quality content. Thank you!
highly appreciated, great u re with us!
Beautiful 😍 would prefer this over the 2020 S class
I miss the good old MB design.
Such a beautiful, classy car.
W123 coupe is one of my favourite cars of all time, I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I could find a good one. This is rather lovely too though.
As always, well done on a review of this timeless classic...my late father had one, a w116, 280s...it was in near concourse condition...unfortunately I sold it when it had to make way for my then new c-class...living to regret it till now...:(((
Thomas my friend. Great job mate. 👍
12:39 and that's when it all started... :)
Autogefühl was born...
Beautiful car. Classic. Perfect color. Nice to see how well it has been cared for. Built to last a lifetime. It’s like life in simpler times. Well done Thomas.👍
What a beautiful car, iron, chrome aluminum, without plastic the kind of engine you can work on :)by the way the door closes like a Mercedes G-class the same noise:))
Takes me back to my time in West Germany in the 80s, all the taxis were big Mercedes.
Back when Mercedes were engineered to last for at least 20 years.
Great video, Thomas.
Classic Thomas. One of my favorites yet.
Great car and classic roadtest. This car of the year is still awesome. My favourite is the most successful Super Klasse W126 (818.036 sales). I love the MB 500SE. It went wrong after the W140.
Great video! Please make more like this of old, relevant classic cars!
Great idea. I am really used to watch Thomas style reviews. Great to see it applied to older cars!
Keep up the good work you do!
Amazing car condition.. It is like a new one.. All - time classic car that brings me nostalgic feelings
I bought a sparkling 79' 450 SEL silver/black in 1989 with 70,000 miles and drove it for 10 years. Typical repairs. Wonderful ride.
Bring back colour-matched wheels!
bring back colour ;-)
First class content as usual. Great work guys. For us who love cars this is a fantastic watch and a new perspective. Thanks!
I suggested the review to friends before i even see it. And after i did, i felt i did good. Great one, Thomas! Greetings from Greece
They say the S-Class is always a look into what the future of cars will be.
Amazing! Love your reviews, so nice to see you bringing this level of review to older cars!
This vintage car review was a great treat. Thank you!
The first car I drove - my father's 1975 280SE in the exact same blue color. Thank you for bringing me back old memories!
My dad had a 280SE when I was a child - such a stunning car. Fantastic review Thomas...
Marcel, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! I couldn't be more agree :)
Amazing engineering by Mercedes considering that time when this classic piece was produced
Very appreciated Thomas! An absolute classic car, pure lines and top build quality!
You should also launch a new UA-cam channel for classic and vintage car reviews. It will be a big hit . Please .
Solid review Thomas! The badge has endurance!
What a perfect car! Wish I could buy one today... Love the old car reviews Thomas - more please!
This version has always been one of my favorites!! Amazing car and fantastic review, many thanks!
The best or nothing, for both car and review.
Such a nice surprise for Sunday
Great presentation, I bought an old W116 350 se (27 years old) in 2003. I drove around in it as my car (wife not allowed) for 5 years. When I sold it, it was still perfect ( Madness). Of all the cars I have owned over my life, this one was the best and the one I miss most. German car production at its best. Unfortunately Mercedes do not currently make car of comparable quality any more, sadly.
Beautiful, indeed should have kept!
This video was an unexpected treat! Thank you (from Singapore)
