One of the best looking Mercs, W 116, awesome
It is indeed, thanks for your comment!
I bought the W116 280s that you are in during this review. Had the front and back windshield rubbers replaced atleas. Haha.. awesome car and been loving it.
Oh wow, that is super cool. 😎 Wishing you lots of happy travels!
Have to agree, my 1980 300SD's performance is definitely "leisurely". And I love every bit of it!
Thanks, enjoy that beautiful car!
Excellent presentation, I have always liked the 116 ever since driving a 450SL in the early 80s.
Thank you kindly!
Sir I can't express my feelings.. it was a superb video with a class information.. thanks a lot for extending your time & effort. 😊🙏🇵🇰👍
Thank you very much for you kind comment! 😊
@@GalimotoMedia great vid mate
@@richlee509 Thanks!
Very nice presentation ! 😊
Thanks a lot 😊
This is a BRILLIANT series of videos. I have watched all three, and appreciate you taking the time to make such careful and well presented information. THANK YOU.
Oh wow, thank you very much for your kind comment! 🙏
Great video, very entertaining, thank you :)
Our pleasure! :)
Quality and fun video! I really consider a W116. Or W126.. both understated and classy
Many thanks for your comment. Great choices, let us know which one you get first! :)
Very informative, and entertaining! documentary. (Maybe the 1st of a kind!) Looking forward to part 3
Thanks, Nico! 👍
I enjoyed your series on the W116. A small correction: The 350SE was initially available with the Mercedes K4A 040 4-speed fluid-coupling automatic gearbox and later in life switched to the 3-speed W3A 040 torque converter gearbox. Although equipped with one less gear, the later transmission was said to be more refined with smoother shifts and with less of a tendency to hang onto lower gears too long. As the W116 was officially introduced in South-Africa only in 1974, all were sold here with the later 3-speed. Unfortunately, we never got the V8 locally in a manual. Anyway, I did warn that it was only a small correction.
Hi Kobus, thank you for your comment. Noted - we were under the impression that it was 3-speed Auto first, then 4-speed later. A good friend of our channel had a manual 350SE as his student car in Rhodesia!
I have a 79 SD, it’s not slow 😁
Wonderful - and it will go on forever! 😊
Love this series...hope you do one for the W126 too...
Thank you, we will certainly consider that! 😃
My 350 sel is still in great shape...I change some pieces in the electrical window system this week and thats it haha. Great video!
Very nice, thanks for your comment! 😊
Best comprehensive review of the S Class... 👍
Much appreciated! 😊
Great review!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So true, about current Mercedes numbers and AMG badges... they're not what they used to be...
B-Class Diesels with AMG alloys, what is the world coming to!
Excellent review
Glad you liked it!
Very informative video, one of a kind about W116, can you please also share the fuel consumption for different models. Thanks in Advance. Stay blessed
Thank you kindly! 😊
You can check it out from wikipedia.
I own a W126, but I'd love to get my hands on a nice Euro-spec W116. The US ones are not very attractive. I think the 450SE is my favorite.
Good choice, thanks for your comment!
Wunderbarr!!!:)
Thanks again, we're working on Part III right now. :)
Cool documentary 😎
Thank you kindly! 😊
Awesome video, however I had a 1979 280SE with Power Windows, Central Locking which included the gas latch Cruise Control Sunroof alloys rev counter plus it had a carburetor, not Fuel injection
Thanks for your compliment! Which country was this?
@@GalimotoMedia Puerto Rico, of course it would be the American version of the W116 280 SE, the car is so unique, and when you see the W116, in all it*s different versions, it still has ir*s charm, elegance plus a very strong & sturdy car,
Loved to the documentary was comparing the specs to a w116 i saw also where can I get all info about the w116 I saw (colour, trims) using the vin no. I obtained?
Looking forward to next video
As far as we know, the older vins (pre-1980's) can only be decoded by a dealer or the factory. Thanks for your comment, we are working on the next chapter!
The 300sd advances adequately
We thought as much, thank you for your comment!
I own a 1974 280se good reveiw
Look after it and you'll drive it forever 😊
Hi I’ve watched your documentary over and over , def the most accurate and informative on UA-cam , I was curious as to what the prices were from new , I have a 450 se and just wanted to know what that was list price in the uk in 1979 . Even what was the cost of the extras ? Thanks
Wow, thank you for your kind comment! 😊 We don't have historical UK pricing data but the Mercedes-Benz public archive lists the W116 450 SE price as around DM 45,000 (Deutsch Mark) in 1979.
Don't forget the unusual consumable AC option.
Renewed every 100km.
You have a calming voice lol
Many thanks! 😁
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The Jaguars of this period looked much better than the W116. The only one I ever drove in had a distinctive smell of leather. It could shoot over steep hills in the parish of St. Andrew in Jamaica. A Dr. Riley owned it. In fact he owned at least two Mercedes-Benz motor cars.
Thanks for your comment, we certainly won't argue with the beauty of a Jaguar compared to the bulky 116!
@@GalimotoMedia I will. The Jag was nice but the W116 was a different type of design. I think the 116 looks better. But to each their own. The Jag looks like it was designed more by artists and the 116 by engineers. Ufortunately for the Jag, they were built by artists instead of engineers as well.
15:15 And all along I thought the different door trim and window surrounds meant that the W116 had a facelift. So what you're saying is that the German built cars had the more rounded door trims and window surrounds, while the South African built cars had the simpler door trim design?
That is what our research indicated, although recently we read that smaller (280) German built models also had the simpler door trim design - which all South African built vehicles were modeled on.
The hate for empirical is real. Hahaha
😄
Fantistic
Many thanks!
