6 years later. This proves to be one of the best independently produced UA-cam automotive videos of all time. Thank you for your work along with Neil and the entire production crew at the time. You're the most deserving of anyone else to have gotten selected for Topgear post trio era. The community thrives on this content. Pure, uninfluenced motoring for the masses. Thank you, once again. My passion surely wouldn't be the same without it.
@@surgeon9039that was a very well shot show as well with great cars but not near the level of drivers/ true journalism that this video has at least in my opinion. 8 years on probably the best piece of independent automotive content around.
Although the last race was pretty much scripted and I bet they knew pretty much after the they tried the cars what they liked best it was still awesome! And I really do think even if you tried them all as they did it's a hard choice and they were honest in the end. My take is that the 918 is probably the best track car, P1 is a track oriented hyper car, and the LaFerrari if your driving skills can handle it the most fun car...
I completely agree. I don't think I realized how brilliant these three cars were when they came out, as a ten year old, but boy oh boy do I appreciate them now. We will never quite see a battle like this ever again. It was indeed the first of its kind. Funny how 2020 will bring the last battle of its kind, with Ferrari, Porsche, and McLaren set to debut their new hypercars in 2025. After that, everything will be electric. The battle between the AMG One and the Aston Martin Valkyrie is.. well, to put it simply, not exciting.
+Sherlock Holmes He actually could have been... I not 100% on this, but I think Tiff and JC are friends. They did work together on "Old Top Gear", so it's definitely possible.
+nabill arif Indeed, regular (news) media should devote some exposure to this incredible achievement. Isn't the new Amazon 'Top Gear' show, called 'Gear Knobs' going to do this same test? It cannot be this epic. It can be more comedic, though.
+nabill arif The video's really long, though, it'll be a while before i've enough free time to watch such a long UA-cam video... It's not as bad as the often three hour recordings of live streams some channels put up, which i never watch, but this video will still test the limits of my patience - i might get halfway though it and say, "That's enough for me." :) .
In a retrospective view, this is probably the pinnacle of automotive engineering combined with a ton of emotional content in it. I’m afraid wo are not going to see anything close to this trio soon.
You are correct. With the release of the W1 it is clear that automotive engineering is not bound to move forward in a comprehensive way. Cars may become faster and more technical, but it appears this trio, specifically the P1, will forever stand alone as "holy". McLaren had 13 years to top the P1, and they failed, wholesale. How's that possible?
This may be the BEST overall track test I've ever watched , bar none. It's just a delight in every way -- three absolutely magnificent cars, the great drivers, their camaraderie, the amazing track, the *outstanding* photography and camera angles, and maybe best of all, the wonderful spirit and joy of Chris Harris embracing it all. Just amazing! One could probably choose a favorite car, not having driven one! --- mine would be the 918 -- but I don't see how you could really say one of these is absolutely "better" than the other. Each is a masterpiece in its own right. Thanks to Chris Harris and his crew and to everyone who made this 52 minutes some of the best I've ever spent watching incredible, iconic cars. Bravo!
This video shows some important points: 1. Internet has killed television. 2. UA-cam is the best way to produce content - for creators and viewers. 3. Tiff and Chris need to work together more often. 4. Harris is God! 5. All three of the cars are just awesome!
It's hard to make those statements if you don't know the financials behind it. It's quite possible this video cost more to make than it'll ever see in advertising revenues.
+Stupid Flanders You're right. Although they had the cars for free, tires, and maybe the track were sponsored by pirelli. And one thing is for shure: This is gonna be a massive youtube Hit!
Best Car review ever. These 3 cars are also the pinnacle of automotive history imo. They just feel like the most important chapter in car history in decades.
+Engineering Explained Yeah, I'm wondering if that is why ferrari finally bent, well broke, and offered the La Ferrari for a test with the magic 3, because Salomondrin did it anyway, (well including a Huayra and Veyron).
+Cars with Luke I'm a recent subscriber to your channel, and your camerawork is unmatched in my eyes. I was just imagining the static shots you could have gotten of these three cars if you were there with these guys. Keep up the awesome content man! I love your downshifts in the mountains and tunnels ;)
+wali rifai Thanks a lot! much appreciated but I have so much to learn. At the moment i'm just some random guy with a camera who loves cars more than anything but Chris is an inspiration to me to make better videos, just need to find myself a film crew ;-)
+Cars with Luke I didn't even realize this was an hour video it was so good. I almost feel like I was holding my breath the whole time it was so exciting. Even Tiff didn't ruin it for me.
Exactly. Not worried about tyres, mechanics, lap times because they know it works and won't disappoint. That's massive and makes the 918 the standout car for me although not with the old school decals. I bet you the P1 needed work done on it every time it came in, they are horrific for faults and problems. Does look crazy though!
Exactly the reason that without even a second of thought I would buy the Porsche instead of the Ferrari or the McLaren... Porsche makes SOLID cars, even if it's not the most beautiful or the fastest, it's technically solid as every other Porsche is and would save a lot on frustration... you just know that when you get into it it will start and have fun without worrying it's going to break down.
Just watched Top Gear and Extra Gear. Chris, leave that sinking ship and get back to doing what you do best - and what we love watching: you on cars. Understand and acknowledge the fact that you are the star. You can make it on your own!
Why would Chris go back? He's probably getting paid far more for TG, and even if does stop in a couple seasons more time he'll still have this to go back to. From his point of view he might as well milk it for what it's worth.
+M.A.K salomondrin, the content of Drive, some guys from motor trend, roadkill, there are at least 6 guys who could make top gear easily, and still topgear u.s. is awfull
This entire video was just nothing short of astounding. I can't believe how much I was smiling the entire time I was watching. This was done with probably a third of Top Gears budget yet they managed to create one of the best 52min of a car show I've ever seen. All 3 cars and their 3 different drivers just allowed for so much information to be poured out on the track that even I feel like I know these cars. what a video! hats off
The only good thing to come from the coronavirus is that you rediscover videos you haven't seen in years, certainly the best content on the Internet . Hope all is well and keep safe.
They flippin' get Matt LeBlanc, a friggin' actor. These lads come across genuine and excited. And they have mad talent. When I see Matt... he looks like he's doing another acting job. It's horendous. Just: why?!
Now I'm still watching this, but my conclusion about the previous P1 918 battle that happened still stands. Mclaren sends out a huge team of people, has as a non road legal race setting (which is fine for this comparison) and has this super crazy tire. Ferrari sends out a crazy team of people and tells Chris how to drive it fast on this circuit. Meanwhile, from the video it looks like Porsche sent out maybe one guy and set it up on the same tire that can come on the new Focus RS and said "Fuck it, have at it". Porsche never fails to impress me.
+cheapo911 If Ferrari wanted wins this "race" build cars with REAL wing and win everywhere. The proof are the Ferrari tyres....CORSA. For Ferrari race are race... sports cars are other. In any case a Ferrari with a RWD, heavy V12 and no wing is competitive with this cars. It's not good result... is great result.
+WeJustDrive well judging by his name, he doesnt seem to be the most unbiased person here, and maybe he fails to understand the tire on the 918 is as aggressive as the trifeo R
LOL you just rated two tired based on treadwear rating (which is NOT an industry standard measurement, and totally irrelevant) as opposed to performance tests.
They managed to make me compare their combined review of the trinity to the review of the trinity by Clarkson, Hammond and May. Shows just how talented Chris is at doing this.
+Hjerrick You should hear one in the flesh. The LaFerrari isn't as loud as the Enzo, but don't get me wrong, it is a very loud car, much louder than the 458 and considerably louder than the F12.
+TheSUPERCARDRIVER Thanks for your 3 tests - particularly the bruntingthorpe test down the 2 mile runway! Also its great to see your siliverstone video tallys with this video also :D shame salomondrins doesnt quite agree (although theres a moment in the p1 where its sliding too much which increases the p1 lap time)
+Will James If you watched thier video you'd know they timed each car separately so it doesn't make any difference that one car got the jump off the line. Numbers don't lie. Subscribe to supercardrivers! They provided us with awesome content and deserve more subscribers.
+Durodes Assetto Corsa with a modder 918 and the mclaren dlc. You can even do a comparison with the supercar driver video as they have silverstone national, its very accurate/awesome.
Except that they weren't racing. It would have been much more interesting if they did a Best Motoring race. That would have made it the best video ever...
Chris Harris stated clearly that all the cars used regular tires for the lap time comparison. He explicitly stated that the Trofeo R tyres were only used afterwards to see the difference and to experience them. I don't understand how almost every single comment on this page is complaining that the tires were a factor. Chris explicitly stated and explained how he made the tyres fair. Also, there is no way any of the manufacturers would have agreed to the test if there was any tire advantage, especially Mclaren and Ferrari. Get over all the complaining.
One odd thing I noticed was that the onboard footage of the fast lap in the 918 just "feels" subjectively slower and more sedate than the other two. In the LaFerrari and P1, there's an element of frantic fear and brutality to the footage, but the 918 lap footage conveys a much less dramatic experience through the camera.
Because the P1 and LaFerrari are rear wheel drive cars which is a lot harder to tame at that kind of power and speed as opposed to the 918 which is 4wd which will be a lot more controlled therefore look more settled on camera.
+Peder Hansen Not really. The AWD helps it put down power and transfer power between rear and front, very similar to GTR. That is why it can manage the corners and get out of them fast despite being heavy. But as soon as Chris turned off the stability control it wasn't that stable anymore. So it's the AWD and electronics doing the magic.
There simply isn't a better a video in the history of UA-cam ... I can't imagine giving any higher praise than that ... Brilliant job by Chris, Marino, Tiff, Ferrari, Mclaren, Porsche and the production and support teams. You guys made history!
In my life I think I'll never have the chance to experience the sensations that these insane cars are able to give, neither from the passenger seat nor even less behind the wheel. But watching the on board video of the P1 during the best lap attempt I felt shivers down my spine and it's a rare if not unique event for me. Don't know why... What a car! Apart from that the video is just perfect!
after listening to Chris’ Collecting Cars Podcast with Tiff recently , I just had to hunt this video down again. Quite possibly the most honest, joy inspiring 52 and a half minutes of motorcar journalism/hooliganism I’ve ever seen. Top drawer gents, top drawer!
nearly 10 years after release, all 3 of these cars still look brand new to this day...and are still jaw-droppingly fast even by modern standards! the fact that all 3 posted lap-times just .6 of a second apart from each other on the same tires makes it even harder to pick a favorite.
What a joy to watch this again after 5 yrs.. don't think this will ever get old, thanks to CH and team for creating this masterpiece of a film.. 2014-15 was such a high point for high performance cars setting yardstick for the supercars which we have being since then, faster and more usable than ever, and yet I think the holy trinity (especially the P1) would hold its special place in hearts of many probably forever
+Ahmad Isa GTR or a Vette in the mix would have been nice just for comparison. Out of the three the Porsche made it look easy seeming to be the most composed,smoothest...easiest to put down fast lap times. Impressive considering it's 1600+kg weight and less HP.
Me too, I watch about each month. 2020 now and this is still one of the best. I also watch Chris Harris"s review ot the GT 3RS many times and I still LOVE it!!!
This was simply dazzling. I watched the full video and it felt like 15 minutes. All three cars are phenomenal and so were the three drivers. This was the greatest piece of motoring journalism I've ever seen, and probably ever will see.
TGT/Top Gear is more about entertaining an audience than being committed to test cars thoroughly. Chris Harris dedicated a whole 52 min video on testing these cars as on TGT they had like 20 minutes all together. I'm a fan of both but I must say that I prefer Chris when it comes to objectively talk about cars.
Actually they weren't using literally the same tires, they were using the same sort of tires, as Jeremy says... The same way they were used in this video
And you can clearly see the driver on the Grand Tour struggling with the P1 oversteering for not beeing used to it. As I see, if the driver get the time to get used to all three of them, the P1 will turn out to be the fastest around this track
***** Now, you're being plain silly. The same size tyres wouldn't fit. The LaF's rears are 345, the 918's 325 and the P1's 315. The video itself clearly shows Michelins on the 918 too. Cup 2s are a slightly stickier tyre. You'll also note that the times they ran are impossible from a standing start, the standing start was edited it. Meaning all 3 times were actually slower. There's also a good reason they spent more time covering the M2's lap around the Eboladrome than the hypercar laps. A very dishonest test indeed.
From day one I’ve chosen McLaren P1. It’s sheer looks are perfect and savage. It’s “simplicity” is spot on. So...of the three I’d definitely choose a Ferrari F40.
So Harris' times: 918: 1:53,98 LaFerrari: 1:54,25 P1: 1:53,57 And those of TGT set by Jérôme D'Ambrosio: 918: 1:54,2 LaFerrari: 1:54,4 P1: 1:55,5 Impressive driving by Harris! And a massive gap between the P1's times - maybe TGT did not use race mode on the P1?
It's nice that we can compare and see that a lot seems depends on the driver and his/her preference and driving style. And I must say I enjoyed Harris film way more than the over scripted less factual Grand Tour one. (The show was still ok)
TGT had PZero Corsas (same tyre) on all 3 and had a standing start for the lap. To me the TGT have a more "fair" condition. Nevertheless Harris test is much better in my opinion but less entertaining.
Been reading 'Variable Valve Timings' and was reminded to revisit this video, now in (at time of writing) its eighth year. Chris Harris... in my view, this has to be one of the finest hours in motoring journalism, engineering, driving skill and film making of all time. Well done, Boss.
Rewatching this video now, in the middle of 2019, with everything going electric, and really just feeling an immense appreciation that this moment was so beautifully documented. Thank you Chris, Marino, Tiff and the production team for creating such an amazing piece of content which truly captures the soul, emotion and essence of the hypercar! Though I can't help but think, would Koenigsegg now fit in the picture? 🤔
Coronavirus quarantine has me watching this again. It's still the best piece of motoring journalism on the internet. I'd still have the McLaren. I don't even care it's the fastest here. I think it looks the best, futuristic almost, and although it doesn't have a V12, the menacing growl of that turbo V8 sounds amazingly brutal.
The Porsche has godlike acceleration, the p1 has godlike speed and the Ferrari has unbeatable passion. But I would still go for the p1. Just good old bonkers British engineering.
If I somehow had the ability to buy one of those cars, my logic would say to choose the 918 as it is the least expensive, the car that can drive the furthest in electric mode only, the quickest car ever from 0-60, and it is a convertible. But my heart would make me choose the P1. I love the sound of the P1 the most, and the car itself looks so strange that it's actually beautiful.
This is true car journalism. This is the true representation of the holy trinity! Chris harris is totally a purist, for me the best car journalist by far on the planet.
This is the best automotive journalism you will see ever... It certainly is emotional watching them have so much work and joy put at the same time. Amazing machines!
I think this and Henry’s review of the GT1/F1/CLK-GTR is the zenith of automotive journalism. Not just because of the vehicles involved, but because of the presentation and production. Stellar work, 7 years on.
Its funny how Italians and British send armies of engineers, special tyres, taking tones of data then adjust the cars, they save weight in every possible way, no seat adjustment, no stereo, no glovebox, everything just to make them cars go 0.5sec faster and Porsche just sends a car that has all the luxuries, no engineers, no data, no special tyres, car weights almost as much as other two combined and still manages to go around the track as quickly as other two. Remarkable German engineering
Remember tho, the porsche has the Michelin tyres which are superior to the Pirelli tyre. So that makes a big difference, i think i like the P1 most...but that Porsche seems like itd be best for actual road use. Especially with the AWD it is probably easier to handle. Really is hard to pick a favorite.
Porsche actually had a big advantage because of the tyres .And reasons you mentioned have nothing to do with engineering of the cars .Porche also sends a team with a car ,take a look at the real top gear video . Ferrari is just like that ,they are lets call it overprotective about theyr cars , especially something that is special like the la ferrari. Theese are cars now worth more than a milion ,no factory will just send a car for someone to trash it on a track with no supervision . All three are amazing ,Porche definitely has a lot ot amazing tech ,they got a big budget with the VW behind them and they definitely do a great job . But i would just take the ferrari any day ,first because of that bloody italian design ,but definitely because of the way they built the Ferrari. Porche is almost an electric car ,so many fricking electronics ,so disappointed .Ferrari are the only one who still do it for the enthusiast ,nothing comes close to a ferrari v12 ,that's the real deal ,no turbos no bunch of electric engines . The amazing thing that the NA V12ferrar is still one of the quickest cars on the world ,that's amazing ,with no turbos or electric engines like on porsche ,just the old school naturally aspirated V12
Great vid, already new from the outset that the P1 was the fastest even on control tyres. You can not complain about the P1's race mode as this is a design of the car, Porsche & Ferrari had the opportunity to build/design the same feature in their car. All in all this was possible one of the greatest car reviews ever. Well done Chris.
Still today the best video ever made for any car guy... When this came out it really blew my mind, and it still does today. The drifting shots are absolutely beautiful.
So yeah, this is the pinnacle of Motorsport journalism. They could’ve ended the video after the Time Attack laps and we would’ve been happy enough, but instead Chris gave us almost 40, FORTY more minutes of hypercar porn. AND Tiff Needell, AND Marino Franchitti. BBC needs to let Top Gear die and just give Chris Harris the budget to do whatever he wants.
What a brilliant bit of automotive journalism. -Proven racing driver -Same tyres -Similar track conditions on the same day -Independent checks, independent setups -Beautiful track with lots of slow, medium, and high speed cornerns
He didn't have the desire/aptitude to play to the camera that Clarkson, May and Hammond had, but he could drive like a bastard and always gave a good idea of what it was actually like to drive a car.
Reasonable chance of Tiff joining. But the rest of the team without Evans would probably be decent anyway. Matt is funny and the other two guys feel more like real car journalists and racers. The last series wasn't up to par, but I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as people made out. This video though is awesome.
The three cars are brothers. For 3 companies in 3 countries to all have the same idea at the same time, and produce cars within .6 seconds of each other.. That is destiny. If you rejoice at one being above the others, then you are nothing a father would be proud of as a human being.
Tiff n Harris, two living car legends right there! thanks a lot for giving us this @Chris Harris on Cars* Wonderful made, beautiful cars, amazing drivers the fans respect... Thank you guys!
Guys I don't really think we understand how lucky we are to see videos like this for free. Being a subscriber at SmokingTire where some people complain about one takes and Matt explains how expensive is to make a proper video, makes me wonder how on earth Chis Harris keeps uploading amazing videos??? Anyway...thank you sir, this video is gold.

This was a track test. And very much a triumph in entertainment.
I agree 100% with your statement
Totally agree with that. I would love to see a TV-Show with all three of them. fantastic entertainment.
nah. 918 is easily best of them all. Its fastest, most advanced car where that hybrid thing isn't just a gimmick
no, you cannot mach 918 with la Ferrari. It has the best looks, the greatest heritage from them and the best handling/fun to drive of them all
This video shows some important points:
1. Internet has killed television.
2. UA-cam is the best way to produce content - for creators and viewers.
3. Tiff and Chris need to work together more often.
4. Harris is God!
5. All three of the cars are just awesome!

I like how porsche was so confident with his product, they didnt even send a team or change tires or anything XD
Nicely said guys :)
They did
I think it was around the same time as grand tour s1
Just watched Top Gear and Extra Gear. Chris, leave that sinking ship and get back to doing what you do best - and what we love watching: you on cars. Understand and acknowledge the fact that you are the star. You can make it on your own!
I liked Extra Gear. Chris and Rory had great chemistry and it was a much more enjoyable show.
Why would Chris go back? He's probably getting paid far more for TG, and even if does stop in a couple seasons more time he'll still have this to go back to. From his point of view he might as well milk it for what it's worth.
Thank you Salomondrin and Chris Harris for making the best video to be ever created on youtube.
+M.A.K salomondrin, the content of Drive, some guys from motor trend, roadkill, there are at least 6 guys who could make top gear easily, and still topgear u.s. is awfull
Harris video is ten times better.
This entire video was just nothing short of astounding. I can't believe how much I was smiling the entire time I was watching. This was done with probably a third of Top Gears budget yet they managed to create one of the best 52min of a car show I've ever seen. All 3 cars and their 3 different drivers just allowed for so much information to be poured out on the track that even I feel like I know these cars. what a video! hats off
8-Apr-2020, 4 years later, Covid-19 and here I am, watching and smiling like a school kid! Absolutely amazing... Who needs Top Gear & Grand Tour!!?
The only good thing to come from the coronavirus is that you rediscover videos you haven't seen in years, certainly the best content on the Internet . Hope all is well and keep safe.
Yeah, agreed.
The car is together coz of top gear if im not mistaken
Chris Harris needs Top Gear now.
You need The Grand Tour, because Clarkson and Hammond originally had the idea of doing this, and Harris just swiped it away
I've honestly never seen a car as perfect and beautiful as the 918. Every centimeter of this car is just astonishing.
For me its always the P1
Same, I love these cars but the Mclaren looks the most futuristic and special. I love everything about that car.
For me it's the Laferrari
Just sophisticated people stating their preferences in the holy trinity of hypercars great to see nobody's toxic around here
For me, it's the 918 too
I've never smiled so much watching a video. it is a truly wonderful thing to see all these cars and all these people together
+H Lopes couldnt wipe it off my face when all three were racing around
Why the fuck aren't these three the new presenters of Top Gear?
I know...what a waste.
I would love that. But im guessing they would still get lots of hate just because they are not Jeremy, Richard and James.
Mazotheman They would get some but after the audience sees their driving skills, chemistry and banter, they'll warm to them.
They flippin' get Matt LeBlanc, a friggin' actor.
These lads come across genuine and excited. And they have mad talent.
When I see Matt... he looks like he's doing another acting job. It's horendous. Just: why?!
BBC!!!!! ARE YOU LISTENING!?
2023 now and I find myself watched it again. This is one of the most important automotive film in the history. Amazing works, absolutely amzaing.
+cheapo911 The Michelin Cup 2 is just as intense as the Trofeo R dude.
+5abdajatt Their treadwear rating says you're wrong (180 vs 60)
LOL you just rated two tired based on treadwear rating (which is NOT an industry standard measurement, and totally irrelevant) as opposed to performance tests.
Best video on UA-cam. Best start saving my pennies!
+Mumbo Jumbo First to P1! It's a challenge, Mumbo ;)
+Mumbo Jumbo you must love these Chris Harris videos :)
(I don't blame you, so do I! Lol)
+Mumbo Jumbo Which one then?
Which one was your favorite Mumbo? Always loved Mclarens myself
Give Top Gear to Chris Harris and let him make a PROPER CAR SHOW AGAIN. Thumbs up if you agree.
8 years on and this is still an epic video, so well done. informative, humorous and yet relaxed
They managed to make me compare their combined review of the trinity to the review of the trinity by Clarkson, Hammond and May. Shows just how talented Chris is at doing this.
This is just amazing. Done the way a real automotive journalist would do it. PERFECT!
+DoctaM3 dude, seriously, fuck off!!!
Love your vids man!
+Allexander DM Why are you crying. Grow up.. Idiot.
+Allexander DM you are such a lowlife idiot xD
Allexander DM you must hate the world dont you little hitler.
That LaFerrari sound...
+Juan Rochelt LaFerrari sound left LaFerrari last
+SUB ZERO LIN KUEI You know well that's an utter nonsense. Chris told you that he would be faster by 0.3-0.4 seconds in another few laps.
+Juan Rochelt To be fair, the sound is incredible. It does win the sound contest with flying colors
+Juan Rochelt I'm rather disappointed by the LaFerrari's sound, it's not nearly as loud as the Enzo for instance, which is just too bad.
+Hjerrick You should hear one in the flesh. The LaFerrari isn't as loud as the Enzo, but don't get me wrong, it is a very loud car, much louder than the 458 and considerably louder than the F12.
5 years down after this is still the best motoring video for me, can't get better than Chris harris and Tiff Needell together...fantastic production.
Awesome, the ultimate test. loved every minute.
+TheSUPERCARDRIVER The test you did was also close to the and so thanks to you too SCD.
Yeah thanks super driver club :)
+TheSUPERCARDRIVER Thanks for your 3 tests - particularly the bruntingthorpe test down the 2 mile runway! Also its great to see your siliverstone video tallys with this video also :D shame salomondrins doesnt quite agree (although theres a moment in the p1 where its sliding too much which increases the p1 lap time)
+TheSUPERCARDRIVER Your test was just as good. Even though the LaFerrari jumped the start.
+Will James If you watched thier video you'd know they timed each car separately so it doesn't make any difference that one car got the jump off the line. Numbers don't lie. Subscribe to supercardrivers! They provided us with awesome content and deserve more subscribers.
I AM FAR TOO EXCITED FOR THIS OH MY WORD.
oh hello mumbo :D
Ouh hello mumbo
Didn’t expect you to see here 😂
Mumbo likes SPEED and POWER!!!???
Don't worry. Chris being the most boring person ever will calm you right down
wait a minute
"I'm in heaven!" screams Tiff while sliding a La Ferrari behind a sliding P1, ahead of a sliding 918... I don't blame him.
For me, the finest bit of Journalism in Motorsport. Chris puts you in the drivers seat and makes you feel one with him and any car he drives. Bravo!!!
This is the best car review any of us are going to watch for a long time.
This is one of the greates videos on UA-cam.
Is this the best video in the world?
+beeeneee Quite possibly yes
+beeeneee undoubtedly, just Epic!
+beeeneee Easily.. Bloody fantastic!
+beeeneee i think it is,
+beeeneee Absolutely!
Just casually returning nearly 5 years later to re watch my favourite ever piece of motoring journalism. Just wow.
That race at the end. What a dream, currently, u couldn't do this in a videogame...
+Durodes Assetto Corsa with a modder 918 and the mclaren dlc. You can even do a comparison with the supercar driver video as they have silverstone national, its very accurate/awesome.
+TumTuned ''Damn EA and their stupid Porsche exclusivity deal...'' My thoughts exactly.
+KarpKomet screw it now i have to burn this weekend away on assetto corsa again. already lost couple hundred hours on it lol
+Brownninja97 lol :D
Having said that, the Cup2 tires on the Porsche are better than the old P Zero Corsa.
Marmik K Yes makes sense. But even in a straight line there's a different feel going on. Perhaps it's the differences in the noise.
Peder Hansen Twin turbo it? Some people are never happy...
+Huxxy AWD
Who is here in 2024?
Hi
It‘s me…
Still here!
This is probably my favourite UA-cam video of all time.
fxg
Is it still the case tho? :)
That ferrari just puts one big smile to my face and i wouldn’t change that for anything quite frankly . It is a wonderful piece of work .
after listening to Chris’ Collecting Cars Podcast with Tiff recently , I just had to hunt this video down again. Quite possibly the most honest, joy inspiring 52 and a half minutes of motorcar journalism/hooliganism I’ve ever seen. Top drawer gents, top drawer!
I first watched this 5 or 6 years ago and again in 2022 and it is still as good as when I first saw it. 😱 My mind is BLOWN
nearly 10 years after release, all 3 of these cars still look brand new to this day...and are still jaw-droppingly fast even by modern standards! the fact that all 3 posted lap-times just .6 of a second apart from each other on the same tires makes it even harder to pick a favorite.
I see people saying 'who's watching in 2016' .Hell people will watch this in 3016!
I came back to watch because this video is just pure joy
It’s 2018. Still going. Strong
2019 btw still obsessed with these 3 cars
2019 haahahha
I only miss the huayra in this vid but its Amazing😍😍
What a joy to watch this again after 5 yrs.. don't think this will ever get old, thanks to CH and team for creating this masterpiece of a film.. 2014-15 was such a high point for high performance cars setting yardstick for the supercars which we have being since then, faster and more usable than ever, and yet I think the holy trinity (especially the P1) would hold its special place in hearts of many probably forever
Best car video on UA-cam EVER! Perdiod ^_^
+UncleManuel Or maybe even the best video!
+Res0nator perdiod?! Questionbark
+UncleManuel The best youtube video that I have ever seen.
+UncleManuel GTR fanboys disagree with you
+Ahmad Isa GTR or a Vette in the mix would have been nice just for comparison.
Out of the three the Porsche made it look easy seeming to be the most composed,smoothest...easiest to put down fast lap times.
Impressive considering it's 1600+kg weight and less HP.
2019, still watching.
Me too, I watch about each month. 2020 now and this is still one of the best. I also watch Chris Harris"s review ot the GT 3RS many times and I still LOVE it!!!
Yup, best part was when they were all three on track, hopefully they will do this again in the next 3-4 years when the new Hypercars arrive.
People REALLY ought to leave their fanboyism out of this when comparing these cars. Just be grateful these magnificent machines exist.
This was simply dazzling. I watched the full video and it felt like 15 minutes. All three cars are phenomenal and so were the three drivers. This was the greatest piece of motoring journalism I've ever seen, and probably ever will see.
Am I the only one who thinks this review of these hypercars was better than The Grand Tours?
I didn't know Michelin made P Zero Corsas, because the Porsche is in Michelins, you can see it in the video...
From day one I’ve chosen McLaren P1. It’s sheer looks are perfect and savage. It’s “simplicity” is spot on. So...of the three I’d definitely choose a Ferrari F40.
So Harris' times:
918: 1:53,98
LaFerrari: 1:54,25
P1: 1:53,57
And those of TGT set by Jérôme D'Ambrosio:
918: 1:54,2
LaFerrari: 1:54,4
P1: 1:55,5
Impressive driving by Harris!
I TGT the laps are from a standstill, hence the time difference
Wasn't Jerome D'Ambrosio doing standing start laps while Chris was doing flying laps?
TGT had PZero Corsas (same tyre) on all 3 and had a standing start for the lap. To me the TGT have a more "fair" condition. Nevertheless Harris test is much better in my opinion but less entertaining.
Kraven83 True! Completely oversaw that
Been reading 'Variable Valve Timings' and was reminded to revisit this video, now in (at time of writing) its eighth year.
For the first time in history! I'm watching this video and it's astounding even when I had thought it to be old and less dramatic.
I think Koenigsegg, Bugatti and Zonda would sit in their own category
Pagani and Bugatti don't make race cars really, can't imagine they turn well.
Not the Zonda. If Jag made the CX-75 we'd have a 4-way battle that year.
Brian Bradford koenigseggs hybrid would probably be faster than ALL 3 OF THESE.... for 3 times the price tho
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I took my clothes off and watched this video naked.
bravo sir......you have popped my 'reply cherry'......;-)
Lmao best comment yet!
+Orlando Camacena no issues.....just empathy.....
+derbigpr500 best best comment indeed
+derbigpr500 I couldn't see most of the video. Most of the time my screen was covered in semen.
Brilliant film. The P1 will forever be my favourite car. It has everything a hypercar should have.
Watching this in 2022 and I don't feel as though the design of the P1 has aged a single day. Stephenson's best work!
Absolutely agreed . Btw i ve got the same p1 in amethyst black in 1/43 scale . In race Mode.
Anybody here in 2019 still smiling at these beautiful cars? I'd have the P1 but what competition
The Porsche has godlike acceleration, the p1 has godlike speed and the Ferrari has unbeatable passion. But I would still go for the p1. Just good old bonkers British engineering.
Coming from NZ I would have to pick the P1. But all amazingballs cars I cannot afford.
I agree with you, call me made, but I like it's sound the most of the 3 too
If I somehow had the ability to buy one of those cars, my logic would say to choose the 918 as it is the least expensive, the car that can drive the furthest in electric mode only, the quickest car ever from 0-60, and it is a convertible.
But my heart would make me choose the P1. I love the sound of the P1 the most, and the car itself looks so strange that it's actually beautiful.
bovgoeswoowoo Yes however Bruce Leslie McLaren is from NZ.
😴😴
8 years later and this remains one of the best, if not the best, (super)car videos on UA-cam.
Amazing
In hindsight, we didn't know it at the time but this may be the pinnacle.
This is true car journalism. This is the true representation of the holy trinity! Chris harris is totally a purist, for me the best car journalist by far on the planet.
I don't think I've smiled so much, and actually giggled a few times, at a video about cars. Amazing to watch. Thank you Chris.
Just finished Chris’s new book, had to watch this video again, it’s even more epic than I remember 👌
This is the best automotive journalism you will see ever... It certainly is emotional watching them have so much work and joy put at the same time. Amazing machines!
Hi Chris, congratulations on being on the new TOP GEAR show.
Very happy for you. Hope the producers let you still be the you we love here on UA-cam.
I think this and Henry’s review of the GT1/F1/CLK-GTR is the zenith of automotive journalism. Not just because of the vehicles involved, but because of the presentation and production. Stellar work, 7 years on.
Just watched this again, and I can’t stop smiling at Chris and Tiff drifting 😆😄
4:30am, New Year’s Day, 2023. Still one of the best videos on the internet. Insane.
True, but, I think that the porshe has the advantage on road tyres having alot of its power to the front axel.
@@jankostojanovic1653 well said
@@jankostojanovic1653 definitely agree with you
Great vid, already new from the outset that the P1 was the fastest even on control tyres.
Guaranteed that I'll watch this every 6-12 months and love it as if it's my first time everytime.
Who's here (again) after Chris's 2020 Xmas day Pod cast with the Franchitti Brothers and Mr Lovett?
So yeah, this is the pinnacle of Motorsport journalism.
They could’ve ended the video after the Time Attack laps and we would’ve been happy enough, but instead Chris gave us almost 40, FORTY more minutes of hypercar porn. AND Tiff Needell, AND Marino Franchitti.
BBC needs to let Top Gear die and just give Chris Harris the budget to do whatever he wants.
I could not agree more..... this to this day is still one of the best reviews of all time
The three of them going at it was the best viewing experience I've ever had. Felt like I was there.
What a brilliant bit of automotive journalism.
-Proven racing driver
-Same tyres
-Similar track conditions on the same day
-Independent checks, independent setups
-Beautiful track with lots of slow, medium, and high speed cornerns
Why can't these three host the Top Gear???!!! Make it happen please!
Tiff has done Top Gear years ago and he was pants
He didn't have the desire/aptitude to play to the camera that Clarkson, May and Hammond had, but he could drive like a bastard and always gave a good idea of what it was actually like to drive a car.
very true
Lets get back to proper driving. I don't want to see another destroyed caravan for fuck sake.
I hope the BBC watched and took notes. This is what a review should be on the New Top Gear. Nothing less.
+Christian Augustin why stop there... i think tiff and chris harris would make great presenters... not convinced about franchitti tho...
+Christian Augustin No, you hope Amazon took notice!
MontyPython12 touche
Man.. watching these gives me goosebumps..the sound the gear changes wow.. Something full electric can never provide.
Just watched this again after so many years and it’s still the best video I’ve ever watched
The three cars are brothers. For 3 companies in 3 countries to all have the same idea at the same time, and produce cars within .6 seconds of each other.. That is destiny. If you rejoice at one being above the others, then you are nothing a father would be proud of as a human being.
Urgh. Prick
Wtf, let People take a pick, why not? I love al of them, but my pick would be, obviously, the Ferrari.
I got to imagine they all knew what each other was doing to some extent, it is just way to much of a coincidence to me.
Tiff n Harris, two living car legends right there! thanks a lot for giving us this @Chris Harris on Cars*
Wonderful made, beautiful cars, amazing drivers the fans respect... Thank you guys!
When you can drive a P1 and not care when its sparks on the bottom, life is good. Great episode Chris!
Jan 2021 watching again....... Still some of the best motoring journalism and cinematography you'll ever witness. 👌
Smoking tire blows ass, Chris has relationships with these companies they send the cars and teams possibly even pay for the track time.
Three completely different philosophies that translate so beautifully on track to us watching this fu**ing amazing documentary !
Possibly the best car review/test video ever made
Man... This is just motor journalism at its best!!!
Poor Clarkson, he could have saved his house.
True lmao
What, if he'd been running the Traffeo tires? :D Probably
Just a guess, but I'll bet Jezzer's checking account is doing O.K.
The TGT’s times were fucked up to play along with the fact Jeremy was gonna tear his old house down anyways.
It was already scripted
I think Chris Harris did this review better than The Grand Tour.
山内淳カイル He definitely went into more detail.
He can definitely drive them better.
山内淳カイル but it was quite boring grand tour was better more engaging entertaining
Chris had a full hour of video review a whole episode of TGT. On TGT they only had like 20 minutes, but still Chris review was better
Yes but I would have used a better driver to get thw most out of all three cars.
The flames from the P1 make my day every time I watch this
Here in 2024…. Still remains the pinnacle of car nerd UA-cam videos. Not ads every two minutes just car noises and Harris chiming in time to time.
