As a life long mechanic (On aircraft, boats, military & civilian vehicles & trains!) I can confidently state that 'No matter how many tools you carry with you, you will ALWAYS need the one you didn't bring!' It's a law of nature. Best of luck with your journey, keep on keeping on. 😊

I am a faithful watcher through thick and thin since the early days. Life happens and nothing lasts forever. That said marry Tamara quickly before she gets away ! Look on it as one of life’s experiences that you will both look back on.
We will definitely cherish the memories and lessons learnt from this experience
The steering box is really unfortunate. Now I will be paranoid about mine because it's also a Brazilian replacement. What would I do? I would go to the nearest hardware store and get the most heavy duty C-clamp to clamp that box, then take the local roads slowly to a more inhabitable location. Maybe there was also room to re-tap the threads and put larger bolts in. Also there are aircooled clubs in Spain. I've gotten help before from some enthusiasts in Zaragoza. Well thanks for suffering for our entertainment.
We did try to reach out to local VW people, but it’s not always possible

I spent six weeks fixing my van in a desert called Boquete in Panama. Bagels, brew pubs, barbecue a short walk away and delivery by courier from the parts store. I guess I figured out this breaking down thing. Don’t tell Tamara there are better places to break down.
Perhaps there is a silver lining 😉
You're a real good guy Ben. You've been rolling with the punches the last number of years. I think back to you putting this new kombi build together in the States and how exciting it was to think of you crossing the world in it. It's not been as exciting seeing you stay so close to home in it. And yea, it's certainly been a pandemic.
I hope when you're all fully functional again that you'll give it a spin somewhere far off and exotic. It looked like you were just about to. That's how i first saw this channel when you were going from one end of the Americas up to the other.

I don't normally react to videos but for you Ben i wanted to make an exception! I've been following you since practically day one and i'm currently rewatching the Hasta Alaska serie (you just made it to Alaska yaaay!) and what a journey it has been! There are so many people that got inspired by you (including me), to get a van and travel. Luckily you stayed away from all the glamour and crazy sponsorships and for that, without a doubt you are the one and only, the OG, the GOAT, the one who always stayed true to his initial idea, travel the world on a budget. Through all the hardship, love, breakdowns and lockdowns, you've managed to push true, and i salute you for that! I'm not here to speak about anyone's choice of partner or relationship, but the chemistry you and Tamara have doesn't need words, it's obvious! Happy for the both of you and you found each other, and i can't wait to see what you 2 are going to conquer next! Keep it up!

I wouldn’t be a happy camper without my little power station. It’s just 300w but it makes all the difference. I also always have the means for fire. Being cold sucks. Glad you all made it through. 🌿
The water freezing is certainly a big deal. It really wasn't that cold for camping in a vehicle though. Plenty of people camp for fun, on purpose in much colder temperatures. You just need the right gear.

Great content and chemistry, you are really back to the content I personally enjoy from the channel. Not sure if it’s been done before, but as a fellow VW overlander (not permanently travelling yet, just adventurers here and there in our 85 Kombi) I’d love to see a breakdown of the tools you bring, and maybe also details on what you bring and how you pack it. I'm also a long time viewer and back for this series. I agree Tamara is a great fit, not throwing shade on any of your previous companions but I think the Dr. might have finally found a permanent companion.
Can't wait for the next episodes. I do have an additional question, have you looked into getting a mylar blanket and sleeping in the nude under that with the rest of the blankets on top? Should allow you to better use your body heat though you might not get a lot of sleep ;).

Funny thing for me was the Australian saying they crank the heat on to sleep. I'm Canadian, the coldest I've ever been inside a house was in Australia, it was 8c inside the rental home my family had in Sydney near Bondi Beach. It didn't friggen have Central heating.
As a Canadian, it never crossed my mind to bring warm clothes to Australia so as a family we were in the living room in our sleeping bags (we were going to camp on our roadtrip later so thankfully we brought them) 😂
I'm also an old sub from your SA/NA adventure days that clicked on a video of yours for the first time in what has to be minimum 3 years

This has been my favorite series of yours after watching the last 2 years! The only other one I liked was when you went through Alaska, where I now live. But it is true that the chemistry between you two makes these videos bomb ( does anyone say that abymore? 😅) It looks like you all have been doing these kinds of videos together for a long time; like you were cast for the "parts" or meant to be.......hint hint 😊💕

yes we do - it has proved very useful when traveling in Winter / Late / early season

Next time your caught in sub zero temperatures you might want to tarp your solar panels overnight. In the morning just shake the the tarp off. Its also a mind-f to park in the sun rather than focusing on shade when you are in Spain.

Been following you from beginning. I relate because I'm a surfer too, and my first car was a '70 westfalia campervan. I also used those two repair manuals extensively 😉 My question is why didn't you guys just follow the coast to Algarve? You would have been warmer, nearer to towns, and you would have caught a lot more waves! 😉

I’d get all major parts pre-substituted with compatible current production parts - so to receive spares would be 1-2 days max. Same idea as the Subaru engine - million times quicker to get than a vintage 1970s Kombi engine.
