I (a PFC) was in the hospital at Ft. Bliss in 1969 and kept calling a 20 something 2nd Lt. nurse "ma'am". I did it so much she finally told me quietly (you don't have to keep calling me that...it makes me feel old.") I replied "Sure, sweetie." The male Major doctor standing behind me really jacked me up for that!

In the original novel (not sure about the stage play) this was a male officer - but a BLACK male officer! Which Southern boy Will reacts to the same way. He never IMAGINED such a thing and refers to him by the common vernacular of the 1950s (hint - it starts with an 'N').

I've (and still) engage(d) in alot of rowdy dow. My Tsgt who had live fresh lobster flown in on a C5 and we enjoyed it on a bear skin rug...Mary Ann (still so many KISSES) and a Captain (stipper part time...shhh) who took me to Mexico. These lovely ladies taught me alot of love and alot of respect for women. I love them still today.

They were respected by countless though, and they often kicked butt in unseen ways. During the Korean War, the Air Force had a team of uniformed ladies in Japan examining recon photos and helping select targets for the bomber forces. Their work likely helped leave many a MiG base or factory in smoldering ruins. Classic case of "Friendly, but actually deadly".

My Mom was a neurosurgical nurse on the French front and she loved Andy Griffith. She said she knew guys that were exactly like his character on tv. She said they were all overly protective of the nurses in harms way. McHales Navy,Sgt. Bilko okay, but no Hogans Heroes. Never had the chance to ask her why. Don’t even mention Patton!!!! Hated that man.
