The Hunting Rifle was essentially your first long gun in Fallout 1 and 2 (assuming you ignore the single shot Pipe Gun in Fallout 2) and it would let you handle a lot of early game enemies. It had decent range, ammo capacity and action point cost and was worth holding on to for quite a while to handle the mole rats and the like. It was also a solid early choice to equip your squad with in Fallout Tactics as you could kill from outside the range of the early enemies that were using pistols or melee.
The Hunting Rifle in the Bethesda games fell victim to the "It doesn't have to be realistic it's just a game." mindset that company seems to have. I think it's a safe bet that in Fallout 3 someone had read about the .32-30 round, that was used in the Colt Peacemaker and Winchester 92, and decided to use the same caliber but in a "lemon squeezer" top break and a bolt action rifle which made no sense. In Fallout 4 they decided to use the same animation for the Hunting Rifle as the Pipe Bolt Action Rifle and, as the latter had a pistol version, they went with the left handed bolt that is so reviled.
In Fallout New Vegas, with the Varmint Rifle and Cowboy Repeater filling the role of the early game long gun, the Hunting Rifle could really shine. So long as you used it from distance with stealth (like a hunting rifle instead of a like a mid range combat rifle) you could kill anything in the game except maybe some of the legendary creatures in their caves.
Non Quest, loot location spoilers below.
Fallout 1 - It's easy to miss as it's just laying on the ground, but you can find one in Vault 15 in the bathe room of one of the living quarters. You have to mouse around until the outline shows up.
Fallout New Vegas - You can find a Hunting Rifle laying on the ground on the north side of the locomotive in Boulder City east of the 188.
Fallout 4- There will be one on the roof of the Red Rocket to the east of Cambridge Police Station. Every time I've been there, even at low levels, it has had a full stock and scope.

In Fallout 2 there's a decent chance you'll get a FAL first, depending on how random encounters go. Caravaners v. Raiders is reasonably common and gets you some for near free. The main problem with it is how that's essentially the only way to get ammo.
"In Fallout New Vegas, with the Varmint Rifle and Cowboy Repeater filling the role of the early game long gun"
Really shows the strengths of NV's weapon design philosophy. Repeater is actually a tier 2 weapon while Varmint Rifle is a tier 1, but the Varmint Rifle's unique strengths (scope, suppressor,) shine in their niche situations.

Hunting Rifle in FNV is pretty good, but it was god tier in Fallout 3. Muties carried these at low levels more often than ARs and they always came with a couple clips worth of ammo on each corpse. because of that my experiences in DC were always starting off with one once i swim to Rivet City, since there's a couple goons nearby with a hostage to save.

It isn't just your "feel", the bolt action in Fallout 4 *is* just straight up worse than non-bolt action when compared like for like. It trades *all* its DPS for a very, very small boost to burst damage that isn't even remotely enough to net critical 1HKOs due to massive HP bloat. Bethesda just fundamentally did not understand game balance when doing the Fallout 4 weapons (See also: The minigun that has the worst DPS in the game despite using lots of rare ammo, being *very* heavy and being one of very few weapons with an actual stat requirement). It's a shame because New Vegas actually had some of the best weapon balancing. Anyone who has read Sawyer's formspring will know there was a conscious procedure in NV's balance (No non-unique gun or energy weapon is better in every way than one directly prior, every gun/energy weapon has some feature that makes you want to use it over other weapons of the same "tier", not every tier has every type of weapon so the ladder is less obvious) while F4 Bethesda seems to have just made it up as they went along.

Why focus specifically on Fallout 4? Fallout 3's DLC, Oblivion as a whole and even Morrowind's DLC were extremely unbalanced.

    • @kanrakucheese
      @kanrakucheese 7 місяців тому

@@e.m.8184 Because it was mentioned in the video. Also Morrowind was never as in your face about the horrible balance as F4 was in every aspect (half+ the perks are blatantly useless) while being defective by design with no method of remedy short of scrapping everything (weapons are balanced purely on having roughly the same DPS, meaning there's absolutely *no* reason whatsoever to use the faster firing option since it requires more resources to feed and can't disable enemies with an alpha strike to absolutely no benefit) instead of mere lack of testing/detail.

It really does suck how rather than doing something about the abundance of ammo in the game they just made it so automatic receivers do less damage to compensate, and let's not even go into how damage resistance calculations work or NPC health scaling. It's a damn mess.

Fun fact, the front sight is slighty off center to the right, causeing long range shots to sometimes miss when using iron sights, the scope fixes this issue making a scoped version a massive upgrade in terms of long to mid range
The iron sights of the hunting rifle (and, to a degree, all non-pistol-grip two-hand rifles) are misaligned with the center of the screen, with shots landing a fair bit to the right of the gun's sights. The scope mod rectifies this.

This weapon is broken in Fallout New Vegas. It's easily second to the anti-material rifle.
You don't need to put alot of points into strength (6 is needed) for the hunting rifle. You can get it very early in the game.
    (How to get)
From Good Springs just go to Black Mountain, and kill the super mutants. At low level they use hunting rifles. After you get it, find a scope mod.
    (Build)
    6 strength
    2 perception
    5 endurance
    1 charisma
    7 intelligence
    9 agility
    9 luck
    1st Recon beret (extra crits)
    100 sneak
    100 guns
Note. You're specials can be bumped up using DLC lonesome road, and from buying implants from New Vegas medical.
You can easily beat this game on the hardest settings with this set up.

  • @i_am_ergo

I would actually put the "range" property of the hunting rifle into the "con" column. For a slow-firing weapon that's meant for initiating fights or taking out targets from a safe distance, its range is simply inadequate. In _a ton_ of scenarios, it'll only be good for one or two shots, after which you'll need to switch to something suited for close-range combat, especially when fighting fast-moving melee enemies like cazadores, deathclaws, nightstalkers, feral glowing ones or reavers or armored humans. It gets completely outclassed by the sniper rifle past like level 10. And since you can easily level your Guns skill to 75 by level 6 and snag a free sniper rifle from the First Recon tent at Camp McCarran, the hunting rifle quickly becomes a waste of .308 by comparison. Had it had longer range, it would've actually been decent well into the midgame, especially with the scope mod for easier sneak headshots. But as it is, I'd personally put the unmodded hunting rifle in the C tier, and the modded one, in low B. Paciencia, while certainly *unique* , is just a very inconvenient version of the anti-materiel rifle with basically no Guns req but also without the explosive ammo. Though the added crit damage does make it an A-tier weapon because sneak crits are a thing. Too bad you only get one per fight.

    Love your stuff.
I love the hunting rifle, but finding a scope is a pain.
Pasciencia’s extra weight could be the addition of a target barrel.
Every once in a while you will find bolt actions that only hold three cartridges. Oftentimes magnum cartridges have longer and fatter cases. Although, .308 doesn’t qualify.
The FO 3 hunting rifle is a favorite of mine. The .32 chambering is very odd, unless you go metric. The WWII German rifle cartridge was the 7.92x57(often called 8mm) and is some .32 diameter. There were millions of bolt rifles chambered for this and US troops brought back many souvenirs after the war.
Getting an 8mm cartridge (about 3” long) into the cylinder of a revolver built for 1” cartridges is a head scratcher. Then there’s the whole pressure issue.

I loved the hunting rifle in Fallout2. Specially with a scope on. Always very accurate from range. But the nearer the enemy was, the accuracy became worse. So it was never an allaround weapon. But still a damn good one. And so from that game it has always been a favorite.
