  • HP Umpire Jeremy Riggs ejected Mets manager Luis Rojas following a fair ball call that led to three runs scoring for Pittsburgh. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2021/...
    Pirates batter Kevin Newman hit a slow ground ball up the third base line, where it was touched by the glove of New York pitcher Taijuan Walker while on or over fair territory, resulting in a fair ball call. As the ball deflected into foul territory between home plate and the third-base dugout, the Mets appeared to argue the call while Pittsburgh's baserunners continued running the bases, resulting in three runs scoring during the live ball.
    Rojas appeared to make contact during his argument with Riggs and upon umpire conference the play stood as called. Also includes prior analysis of the fair/foul rule for batted balls on the infield.

      What's worse is that Riggs is one the top 1%, these umpires get rigorously tested at every level. The expectation of perfection is ridiculous, but even moreso in beer league softball with 16-18 year old umpires who just are trying their best. Rojas should be ashamed of himself.

      Fielders were confident that the ball was foul. If they could get the umpire to change the call, further action would become immaterial.

      @@Jrose11 The main reason is that once it passes the base in flight, it is determined to be fair or foul by where it lands, which can be seen pretty well on video replay. However, on plays where the ball bounces before the bags, the fair/foul call is based on where it is touched by a fielder or where it crosses over the bag, which is usually when the ball is not on the ground. It's impossible to judge a fair/foul call on video when the ball is not on the ground, especially when there is no camera angle that is directed straight along the line from the tip of home plate.

      That deals with a separate subsection of foul law - it applies to balls first touching the ground past 1B/3B only, where the law says it must fall 'on' fair territory.
      For this one when a player touches it it must be 'on or over' fair territory, which includes raised parts of the ball.
      Edit: that means if the ball had settled where it was touched it should be foul, as a ball must settle 'on' fair territory, not 'on or over'. Although it may just ge touching already I think.

    CCS has another video "Parallax Angle for a Ball Over the Line" where they explain a ball has to touch part of the foul line to be considered fair, and not just be over the line as was said in this clip. Because a baseball is spherical, only the bottom of the ball touches the line, and it seemed pretty clear that the bottom of the ball did not touch the line here before Walker swatted it further foul.

    • @donnybrusca3043
      @donnybrusca3043 3 роки тому +2

      You're confusing two difference situations. Yes, a batted ball that lands beyond the bag is judged fair or foul based on what that video describes -- it has to touch the foul line to be considered fair.
      That's NOT the case on a ball that is first touched by a fielder before it reaches the bag. In fact, 99% of the time, it's touched by the fielder while it is any number of feet above the ground. There's no way we can use the "touching the foul line" criteria in these situations. Otherwise, a line drive caught by the pitcher would be considered a foul ball since it never touched the ground in fair territory. As long as any part of the ball is above the foul line when touched by a fielder, it is a fair ball. The same can be said when a bounded ball bounces over first or third base. It doesn't have to touch the base. When it passes over the base, we just need any part of the ball to be over fair territory for it to be fair.

    I think the reason this isn’t reviewable is for placement purposes. If a foul ball in the infield becomes fair on replay, what do you do with the runners? Could the defense have made an out? Do you have to give first base? It’s much more simple on balls in the outfield when it would always be a hit anyway

    Question: If the catcher started running for the ball and ran into the runner who was in the running lane, would the runner be out for interference or would the runner be expected to run around the catcher which would result in the runner running out of his running lane?

    • @LindsayImber1
      @LindsayImber1 3 роки тому +3

      If the umpire deemed the catcher was the fielder entitled to field that ball, the runner may be called for interference in the situation you described. The runner would be legally allowed to avoid the fielder attempting to field a batted ball.

    • @donnybrusca3043
      @donnybrusca3043 3 роки тому +1

      Neither. Only one fielder can be protected when fielding a batted ball, and it's pretty clear it would be the pitcher on this play. So, if the runner ran into the catcher, it would be obstruction on the catcher. (Not that it would matter here, because he reaches home easily anyway.)
      Also, a runner is only out for running more than three feet out of his base path if it's to avoid a tag. The catcher didn't have the ball, so he can run wherever he wants here.

    • @donnybrusca3043

    "On" = touching fair territory, "over" = above fair territory (even if touching foul territory)
    However...
    "A FOUL BALL is a batted ball

And I wish that umpire could have decked Rojas, a complete jerk here, out of control and wrong because it was the right call, and I hope he's suspended for a few games. The Curse of '86 lives on.
