Ejection 074 - Nestor Ceja Ejects Brandon Hyde After Overturned Foul Ball-to-HBP Call in 1st Inning

  • 1B Umpire Nestor Ceja ejected Orioles manager Brandon Hyde following a check swing hit-by-pitch call in the 1st inning vs Cleveland. Report: www.closecalls...
HP Umpire Jim Wolf originally ruled that Indians batter Amed Rosario fouled an inside pitch at home plate. After a Replay Review as the result of Terry Francona's manager's challenge, Wolf's call was overturned, with Wolf ruling (and Ceja affirming) that batter Rosario did not strike at the pitch as it touched him, meaning the end result was a hit-by-pitch.

I have a simple solution to the swing-at-a-HBP rule. If a hitter gets hit by a pitch out of the strike zone, the umpire must allow the hitter a little more swing than is normally allowed when a hitter swings without being hit by a pitch. This simple rule would be a good start. Maybe a year or 2 later, make that rule change even better by allowing a little more swing than that if the pitch is at the letters or higher. One reason for this rule change would be to make it a little more fair for the hitter. Another more important reason would be to make it safer for the hitter. If a hitter has to worry about not swinging too far and not getting hit by a 90+ mph pitch at the same time, it could be game over for the hitter (Pardon the pun.).

If he already swung when hit, then that supersedes the HBP, but even if he did swing later after hit, does it matter? NCAA uses bat head in front of the front hip to determine what is "too far", but in MLB I believe it is just it is just was there intent to hit the pitch. There is no way he swung 2 different umpires said so hands are not part of the bat. He was getting hit by the ball and moved afterwards.

@@63076topher "2 different umpires said so" is an extremely poor justification - unless you're saying umpires are never wrong. Is that what you're saying?
If you SWING, and are subsequently hit by the pitch, that's a strike - regardless of what part of your body it impacts.
"Hands not being part of the bat" has nothing to do with anything here. The "foul ball" call was incorrect (umpire was wrong 😱).
I agree with the poster - I think he swung, as well. Call should have been a "dead ball, strike."

@@alanhess9306 Are we going to do this again? I know the hands are not a part of the bat. There is no rule that establishes what an actual swing is, or even half (check)-swings (a lot of people like to say "he broke the plane" or "he broke his wrists"). Question on this is when did Wolf establish that the batter did not swing at the pitch? The only thing we barely see is when he checks in with the 1st Base Umpire on a call right before he put on the headphones to wait for NY to make a call. Did he offer to swing at the ball? Did he stop the motion? Did the umpire make an actual call on the check swing prior to the challenge? This is one of those "in the umpires judgement". At what point did the manager ask the HP umpire to check in with his partner? Before or after the challenge was made? Can a manager ask for a check swing ruling and then challenge the call? If so, how often can he? This is why it is important for MLB to finally define was a swing and a half (check)-swing is.
MLB Rule 8.02(c) comment (partial): The manager or the catcher may request the plate umpire to ask his partner for help on a half swing when the plate umpire calls the pitch a ball, but not when the pitch is called a strike. The manager may not complain that the umpire made an improper call, but only that he did not ask his partner for help. Once the umpires explain the result of the play, however, no one is permitted to argue that the umpires should have exercised their discretion in a different manner.
