    Hope you found the tips helpful! What are your best tips for beginner photographers?

    • @joestrahl6980

      What do you mean by beginner? Someone who *just the week before* bought their camera with a kit lens and another lens? Or someone one year into their photography journey who takes pictures about once a week? I think this two types of "beginners" would be helped with different advice, says Joe who has been three years on his journey.
      One tip for myself which I started this week was to go back through the archives of the past 3 yrs and copy the select few pictures from each month that are "good" into another folder for closer inspection later and select then from these. ... for maybe prints? What I noticed looking through the first year was that the first months I was not progressing but then there were two different months the first year where I clearly improved and the other months were plateaus. I will continue my review into the other two years ...In the coming days.

      @@joestrahl6980 great tip! Yes I think looking back and seeing improvement is so important. And also learning to see WHY one photo worked and one didn’t.
      I suppose people can still feel like beginners for years, I know I did because there’s so much to learn!

      Great tips, I read or heard somewhere during my time with a camera saying there are no rules, obviously there is some, but it took a lot of silly thoughts away. Been using a Camera since April 2022 and a drone since February 2021 found the camera a struggle but so was the drone at first. YES I HAVE TO MUCH GEAR. My friend who has been using a camera for over 30 years says he has still no clue, All words of wisdom. He’s a very good photographer. Thanks for this video 👍🏽

I photograph at the same places a lot (courtesy of being a pro) and each time, I need to be more creative than the last, and over time you have an encyclopaedia of ideas, not only for this location but similar places.

    Pentax Forums has a thing called "Single in... [insert month here]", where the aim is to post at least one photo per day for a whole month, using the same lens for that entire month. It was specifically developed as an antidote to Gear Acquisition Syndrome, but under some circumstances it can make it worse because people always go looking for something else (usually secondhand, old film lens) to put on their camera for the month.

    I'm old enough to have watched Barry Norman's film review program on the BBC back in the day so the ending music made me smile. I really enjoy your enthusiasm and down to earth style of videos on so many aspects of photography. I bought my first SLR, an OM 10, in 1980 and added a few lenses and an OM 1 body over time but slowly stopped using them during the 90s. Partly inspired by your channel (and a little nostalgia), I recently got an E-M10 from MPB and hope it will get me out and about and make some images that I couldn't get on a phone. Thank you.

    Emily, I love your videos and have been a follower/subscriber for a long time. Joined the M43 crowd when the EM10 mk Ii came out because I needed the IBIS to counteract a tremor. Thank you for your wonderful videos about techniques, your photo trips, and the gear, too.
    One small issue--I seem to have a certain amount of gear born of watching your videos. 😊 First, there's that 9-18mm Oly lens from eBay. Like you, I love the images it makes. And it complements the kit lenses to give full coverage from 9 to 150 mm. Then there are those marvelous Pentax 110 lenses, which, sadly, have not seen the use they should have.
    And most recently there is that E-PL6 you vlogged about. Definitely new and shiny. And I believe the bright red color played no small role in your purchase. And I was surely tempted to buy one until this current video. Well, I'm still tempted, but I believe I can resist this one new and shiny thing. 😊 📷
    Keep up the good work and thanks again.

    You have such a great personality for communicating with people, and I enjoy your videos. I would really be interested in seeing you create a video just about critiquing photographs and especially on critiquing photographs of students or fellow photographers. At the same time, I'd appreciate more information on critiquing your own photographs. I do quite a bit of instruction with our community photography club and find it difficult at times when attempting to critique a photograph that I find to be in need of some serious help, but I don't want to discourage the photographer. With my own photographs, I know I can be very critical and definitely look back at older photos and think "what was I doing???". At the same time, I can look at my archives and find images that still strike me as really good.
    So, thanks for a great video and I hope you will explore some of these topics in future videos.

    Hahaha… GAS is real. I just bought a used GX9 with the 12-32mm kit lens. I have only shot a few photos for now, but I love the GX9 already. But even if the kit lens is great for travel because of the size, I don’t like the shooting experience with it. The camera is great, but the lens is just OK, so now I have ordered the 14-140, 100-300 (why I wanted MFT in the first place), and the 20mm, 25mm and 45,5mm f/1.7 🫣I feel crazy, but… damn, what a small system. The GX9 files are great, and I love the small rangefinder style. Hope they don’t have discontinued the GX lineup.

    Love the art aspect of this but think of the photographers who use photography as a tool. The advent of digital photography has given us a new tool to use in science, engineering, crafts and family history recording. I will give an example, if I am doing something in electronics, engineering or whatever, I can take a digital photo at no cost and record each stage, with the ability to return if something doesn't work.
    Accidents, emergencies, crime etc: A brilliant tool for recording life events. Even the humble dashcam has a place. Modern digital photography has opened so many exciting aspects to our lives with practically no cost (other than initial equipment be it smartphone or super camera). We now have the ability to record our whole lives, both in still and video photography effectively at no cost. As a geriatric I grew up with film photography were every exposure had a cost. Now I can let the Grandchildren photograph dinosaur scenes in the garden without cost. They are learning, not only to handle a camera and compose photos, but manipulate those images. They are currently 12 and 8.

    Hey Emily, for the GH6, do you typically shoot in 5.7k LongGOP or 4k ALL-I? Since you shot a lot of footage at this point, is there a visible image difference between LongGOP vs 4k ALL-I? Also I ordered a CFexpress card and want to use the SD as a backup. Is something cheap such as Samsung Evo Plus v30 good enough or am I ogling to run into hear throttle with both cards recording at same time? I'm assuming I wont be able to record ALL-I 400mbps on the sd v30 card. Thanks for all the info you put on here

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому

      Thanks! So for format, personally I’ve seen little difference in quality, just performance for editing between those two. all-I edits better and faster. Some older machines crap out with the LongGOP. I’ve been associate shooting for some people a few months ago and their computers wouldn’t even recognise the LongGOP stuff, I had to convert it for them.
      If I’m shooting just video, I tend not to dual record at all, because I can never remember which format don’t like the SD card and it just isn’t worth the risk imo! It literally will just stop recording, refuse to record, or die half way through if the SD card isn’t fast enough. So I just stick with the CFExpress card (or ssd) unless it’s definitely the lower quality formats I know can handle it.

    • @AlphaTroll

      @@MicroFourNerds gotcha. good to know. thank you. have you seen difference in quality between ProRes and LongGOP? Also I use an M1 Pro MacBook. sorry for all the questions. • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому

      @@AlphaTroll you wont have an issue with any formats with that laptop that is the one I have :) Prores to me looks stunning but it is SO storage heavy! Like 1gb a minute or more. so I don't use it very often to be honest, tho it is great for information in the files.

    • @AlphaTroll
      @AlphaTroll Рік тому

      @@MicroFourNerds Thank you and finally, since you have the 10-25 and the 25-50mm siblings, are you still holding onto your 25mm 1.4 even thought the siblings are sharper? have you completely switched to the siblings? I got the 25-50, 8-18, 12-35 and 25mm and wondering if I should get rid of some and just stick with the 25-50 and 8-18 or even replace that one with the 10-25

    • @MicroFourNerds
      @MicroFourNerds  Рік тому +1

      @@AlphaTroll I personally still have a place for the 25mm 1.4 because I tend to prefer a smaller setup for my own projects. But for professional stuff where size and weight isn’t a problem, the larger twin lenses are hard to beat!

    Some great tips there and I saw myself in most of the mistakes.
    Yep, there's the usual list of places and lots of similar photo from them - all pretty similar and nothing excelling from one trip to the last. My job makes it almost impossible to catch a sunrise so most of my photos tend to be at the wrong time of the day when the sun is either (a) hidden behind a blanket of grey clouds (this is the North East after all) or (b) strong and contrasty.
    Last walk was a bit different. Taking in part of one of my usual walks I decided to do things wrong and took most the photos with a super wide zoom (5.6-11.2mm on the GH5) and liked the results.
    I using Google Earth and Google Maps/Streetview to scout round the area beforehand and found a couple of places that I never knew about (and are now added to the list of usual subjects on my Newcastle Keep and Quay walk).
    I planned the walk using suncalc.net/ to find out the time of sunset and worked my walk out to get down to the end of the Quayside in time to catch the bridges silhouetted against a sky full of blue, gold and pink - I even got some pics of the Slug in the same glorious technicolour.
    Really happy with the results in general. A couple of the shots I want to go back and reshoot at different times.
    Rather than just wandering round aimlessly snapping away (as I tend to do) I'm trying to plan a number of specific shots on my walks and I'm now using Google to plan out some walks of narrow streets and dark alleys. Found a great little shopping centre (well I remembered that it was there somewhere but thought it may have been demolished). It's shut, run down and covered with Graffiti so that's going to be on my next walk when work and the weather permit.
    I'm Totally Guilty of shiney shiney chasing. Mind you few of my lenses are new but some were bought more the the idea of the lens (the aforementioned super wide and my 600mm super zoom both on MFT) without really thinking about how I want to use them or what I want to take photos of. I seem to be drawn to visiting second hand photography equipment web sites (yes including MPB).
    I don't use presets or filters. I like playing around seeing how slight variations of the settings make a huge difference. The down side to that is it takes me three weeks to edit one photo. I usually use Darktable, used RawTherapee, tried the free trial version of DxO Photolab, just started Lightroom but also play with editing them in Davinci Resolve and it's really good for colour grading photos as well as video - so many professional grade colour grading tools and effects - although if they need noise reduction Davinci's Temporal noise reduction wont work on a photo so you'll need to do that first so I've got a copy of Topaz and export kdenoised photos as TIFFS to use in Resolve which also deals with the conversion as Resolve can't handle the raw files from the GH5.
