    Thank you for another fine demo. The Black Sequencer seems like a traditional analog sequencer with the super powers of something like the Hermod+. I'm gonna have to clear some space in the rack for this gem of a sequencer.

    The sound you got out of your oscillator etc is not too shabby either! I'm going to go Euro rack modular later this year and researching now. This sequencer was already at the top of my list, I think now its going to stay there!

    It's terrific. I've had one for a year or so and the only thing it lacks is fuss. You can make complete structured tunes or abstract jams, whatever you're feeling. It's really easy to use.

    it's the best. if you own one or are thinking of it and haven't realized, it can run four trigger tracks on the mod lanes in addition to the four gate/cv tracks; i.e. 6 drums 2 voices, or any combination. it was the realization that sealed the deal for me. i have produced two very elaborate albums on this sequencer alone. hell is empty as blvckfuse and disconnect the dots as cellar doves. extremely different projects, the former being heavy techno and this thing served quite well. it is not "drum sequence" which feels inherently perfect for programming drums, to the touch. but it absolutely gets the job done if you need a techno sequencer but also have other more melodic projects. bringing me to the latter, a very melodic album, all recorded in full takes on the modular plus vocals recorded later, but in the demo vids i performed and sang. in other words the black sequencer is a sleeper. it can serve many many many purposes and if you're building up a system and have two or three voices and five or six drum modules it can run those. you just press setup + mod and scroll w/data encoder to the "trig" selection and now you can sequence triggers out of the mod outs. the mod lanes can be so many things including cv for pitch, but one of my fav things is its lfos, these alone are worth it for me. trs = triple ramp saw, real nice for polyrhythms, but that's my two cents, it's just really really versatile and does everything it does really well. again, programming drums on it versus say es drum sequencer is a different experience. i got used to it for a while after owning a techno system as my first modular setup, selling and rebuilding, now owning drum sequencer again and i will say the drum sequencer is a luxury for drum sequencing. i wouldn't call black sequencer a utility drum sequencer, since you can use its gate channels as your triggers, but those mod trig lanes run independently of the gates but on the same channel, meaning it helps to have a couple mutes externally, but it got me thru a lot and i'd say it's a very good choice if you're trying to accomplish a wide
    variety of patch styles. it's also incredible for semi-generative stuff. it never disappoints.

    Love my ESB sequencer and ironically, it replaced my Renee 2. 4 channels, each with adjustable length and speed plus a dedicated mod channel. And so easy to remember how to use. I don't have to pull out the manual if I go two weeks without using it. But thanks to you and a previous video Hermod+ is at the top of my wish list.

    • @turbotambourine
      @turbotambourine Місяць тому

      Haha amazing! How are you finding it? The Rene has always drawn me in and this is the first video on the Black Sequencer that had my eyes widen. 😂 It does seem to be really fun and it being 4 channels, it gives you the opportunity to separate gates and pitch if you want. But with so many options on 16 steps, you almost wouldn’t need that. Makes me wonder about getting a determined sequencer like this for sure. I think something that I initially didn’t like is that it felt too close to a Beatstep Pro which at the time was what I was getting away from. I think now, I see a lot more possibilities with it and the UI and layout seem really great. It’ll have to wait for a bigger case though or a side mission of larger modules I’m considering of doing. A little tour as I try out and cycle through a couple big sequencers. Now this one’s definitely on the list.

    I really dig the approach you took in this vid, just diving in and showing how easy it is to get started with the Black Seq. It took me a long time to get my hands on one of these, and I still have barely scratched the surface. I watched Loopop and other review/tutorial vids, but it borders on information overload. However, your vid makes me want to just dive in and start playing. I think this is the motivation I need to finally *learn* how to use the BS properly. Thanks, Jeremy!

  • @VictorSteiner

    I have both the BS (my favourite Sequencer by far) and the Hermod 1 (one of my first sequencers, for polyphony). If the perfect Interface of the BS would somehow support polyphony (chords) I would never need another Sequencer.

So thanks for a stab more for me - i hope i catch the Drift - if you catch my drift ,-😘 gotta check it for updates - a year ist a lifetime for many a unit ! This has a lot going fur it compared to Rene. The main advantage i see for Rene is its mod inputs. A big part of what makes modular special is modulation. CV inputs are where so much of the magic happens. The whole "Cartesian" thing is exactly what I'm talking about.
    I see that the black sequencer has three inputs besides clock, but afaict theyre mostly intended for "recording" sequences. You can have the CV input add to the CV output, but you can't use the inputs to move the sequence around, eg scan the steps or advance or do "Cartesian" motion or anything like that.
    Could you use the record functionality to modify the sequence while it's playing?
    Anyway, Rene 2 is terribly fiddly in many ways that could be solved with a screen. I've owned mine for years and still have to look up how to _save_ the sequence, which is super irritating because it forgets its current settings on power down unless you save. MN emphasized the "Z plane" in promoting the Rene 2, but I absolutely cannot be arsed to learn how that works. Even so, many aspects of its interface are inspired in the way it helps you write and perform.
    Blah blah blah. Thank you for coming to my lemonade stand. Don't forget to tip your flight attendant.
