One of the best unintended consequences of the COVID pandemic was the King's College lay clerks being unable to perform at this service due to last-minute isolation. The King's Singers stepped in and as a result, this was one of the most memorable services ever. One to treasure, as indeed are the King's Singers, in whatever incarnation. The discipline, practice and scholarship which goes into a world-class vocal ensemble such as this is incalculable. Makes me proud to be British. Thank you for this unique experience.

I really feel lucky to have the King Singer's beautiful music so easily accessible. Their music makes me feel so peaceful, it's like having a chorus of angels to sing you.

Poem by Clive Sansom which has been set to music as The Shepherds' Carol by Bob Chilcott.
We stood on the hills, Lady,
    Our day’s work done,
    Watching the frosted meadows
    That winter had won.
    The evening was calm, Lady,
    The air so still,
    Silence more lovely than music
    Folded the hill.
    There was a star, Lady,
    Shone in the night,
    Larger than Venus it was
    And bright, so bright.
Oh, a voice from the sky, Lady,
    It seemed to us then
    Telling of God being born
    In the world of men.
And so we have come, Lady,
    Our day’s work done,
    Our love, our hopes, ourselves,
    We give to your son.

They came to my tiny community college last year. I do not regret being forced to go to their concert. My husband even enjoyed it! Had to write a page about their music and ended up with 3.

This was a real highlight of that service. Just a few years ago, in the documentary about Carols from King's, the late Sir Stephen Cleobury was shown meeting Bob Chilcott after rehearsing this piece, and saying that it is so well calculated for that particular space. Chilcott was a King's chorister in the 1960s and a King's Singer decades later; of course, the King's Singers were born of the King's College Choir to begin with, and even though not all the current members are "King's men" it still seems as if they have come home when they sing in the Chapel. So: this juxtaposition of Chilcott's music, written for the choir that formed him, sung by the group that was also formed out of that choir and in which he once played a part, is tremendously serendipitous and magically effective.
That's even before considering the wonderful good fortune that the King's Singers were available to step into the breach resulting from the Covid crisis that might otherwise have silenced this service in 2020.
On every level, this recording is a gem.

I've been a devoted fan of The King's Singers for years. Though members change, the sound remains ever beautiful. This group is head and shoulders above all the rest. Love this video of the current group!!

I just saw them live in concert a couple of days ago, and I agree. Their blend is unparalleled in the history of the group. There were several times at the concert that it sounded like one voice, even though 2-3 were singing the same night. Chris and Nick sound especially good together.

Yes, maybe with current line-up, I would agree, but not during the exquisite "Dream Team" days of David, Robin, Paul, Philip, Chris and Stephen. That KS line-up was unequalled. @@marks5203

I found this group by total accident. My internet radio suggested them but I can't play them on demand. I came to UA-cam to hear more and....wow... as an audiophile and married to a sound engineer, I am truly blown away. Rarely do I get goosebumps with music, unless a song triggers a strong memory. But when they harmonize, my entire body broke out in goosebumps.
They are so talented, perfectly matched to that room, and whoever mic'ed and recorded this did a phenomenal job.

Bob just keeps getting better and better at writing for the KS sound. He's incredible. If I could ever write anything half as ringing and beautiful as this, I could die happy.

I love this current line-up however I too miss the group you list as they are more my contemporaries. I have also been watching the previous line-up (Jeremy Jackman, Alaistair Hume, etc) in a video on UA-cam called a Madrigal History and have come to appreciate them as well (they have such lovely speaking voices also!). Aren't we fortunate to have such dedicated and extraordinary people who continue to perform and sing this wonderful music.
