spiritdei.blogspot.com King's College Cambridge 2008 The Shepherd's Carol Bob Chilcott.
This carol was specially composed for 'Carols from King's' in 2000.
Bob Chilcott (born 9 April 1955) is a British choral composer, conductor, and singer, based in Oxford, England.
Born in Plymouth, he sang in the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, both as a boy and as a university student, notable achievements including singing "Pie Jesu" on the renowned 1967 King's recording of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem. In 1985 he joined the King's Singers, singing tenor for 12 years until his departure in 1997 to focus on composing.
He is well-known for his compositions for childrens choirs, including his piece "Can you hear me?," • Can You Hear Me? (Bob ... which he has conducted in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Estonia, Latvia, Germany, and the Czech Republic. He is also associated with the New Orleans Childrens Chorus and the Crescent City Festival in New Orleans, for which he has written six pieces including "Jazz Mass," "Happy Land," "This Day," and "Be Simple Little Children."
Since 2005, his arrangements of three traditional songs from the British Isles ("Ar Hyd y Nos," "The Skye Boat Song," and "Londonderry Air") have been incorporated into the Last Night of the Proms as part of Fantasia on British Sea Songs, originally orchestrated by Sir Henry Wood.
In the Choral Festival after Hurricane Katrina in June 2007, Mr. Chilcott wrote the piece "This Day", a song that combined 5 poems into an 11-minute, 21-page song. The world premiere was on June 25, 2007, at the St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. Two-hundred ten singers from around the country sang the piece.--Wikipedia
When the relentless jingles in the shops get you down, when you wish Christmas meant more than a mad retail frenzy...listen to this. Time stops and your heart fills with the beautiful truth of Christmas.
Sheer JOY!
Amen
These reverent selections accentuate the beauty and majesty of this splendid season, giving glory and honour to the One whom it is all about - Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord! 🙏❤🙏
We stood on the hills, Lady,
Our day’s work done,
Watching the frosted meadows
That winter had won.
The evening was calm, Lady,
The air so still,
Silence more lovely than music
Folded the hill.
There was a star, Lady,
Shone in the night,
Larger than Venus it was
And bright, so bright.
Oh, a voice from the sky, Lady,
It seemed to us then
Telling of God being born
In the world of men.
And so we have come, Lady,
Our day’s work done,
Our love, our hopes, ourselves,
We give to your son.
I cannot get over how stunningly beautiful this piece is.
💯 yes.
Praise be to God....that was beautiful...
As usual, the choir of King's College turn in a peerless performance at Christmas. Christmas begins for me once I have seen this programme and would never be the same without it. This piece was SUPERB!!
I can't stop listening to this. So beautiful.....
I feel bad for those who've never sung in a choir. It's a magical experience.
I sung in a choir when I was 4 and it was for a nativity play
@annikee59: You're right. Being involved musically (I've both played and sung) creates connections that are, at the very least, special, if not magical.
The most beautiful Christmas song I've heard in my life...
Extraordinarily beautiful! This is Christmas. Thank you.
I can't listen to this enough.....agreed that it brings the true meaning of the season to heart. I think I get teary every time I hear that final note! Thank you Bob Chilcott!
Same here. Absolutely yes. 100
As Christmas is giving, "The Shepherd's Carol" is the greatest, richest gift. Thank you.
we're singing this in my high school choir now and i ALWAYS get chills every time i hear the very last cord. so lovely :)
Hi ! I saw that you posted this comment 13 years ago ! Do you still sing in a choir ? 😊
I am so glad someone put this on YT.
This is a stunning piece.
I am just captive every time.
You're very welcome! I have been watching/listening to the service since the sixties. It never gets old!
Oh Christmas time! Most wonderful time of the year... there are 135 days to Christmas, can't wait. Then I can fully enjoy all these great carols...
It had me five seconds in when the first phrase resonated around the building. Magic.
John rutter rightly has called this THeE most beautiful modern carol. Also i,m delighted to say i went to a singing day with bob chilcott and he was the kindest and loveliest ma..
n you could imagine. God bless you in every way bob!
Just head Middlebury College Choir sing a this. The sound of angels.
Bob Chilcott was A Kings Singer - lucky him.
Thanks for posting this,I really appreciate it.I first heard this when it was written for the actual service of that year and have loved it ever since .All the best
I first heard this on an EMI album 'On Christmas Day - New Carols from Kings'. Ever since I've considered it the most hauntingly beautiful carol ever written. Thank you Bob. On the same album, John Rutter's arrangement of Herrick's 'What Sweeter Music' is my other favourite.
Same for me. I'd be willing to say those two are best carols written in my lifetime (40 this year). Simple, beautiful, and so effective (and affecting).
Thank you for sending me the lyrics. I love this carol and will definitely seek out more of the composer's music. Blessings.
Divine. Absolutely beautiful.
Just heard this carol at the Inner Temple carol service, and had to hear it again: thank God for UA-cam!
Wow...I was at that service last December in London, too. It was the debut for me as well. They didn't do it this year. There were some other interesting choices at the "Bah! Humbug... " concert :-)
Love, love, love it.......beautiful! Thank you.
will be singing this on Thursday evening at our nine lessons and carols at St. George's Cathedral in Cape town. funnily enough, in my 17 years of singing I've only had the pleasure of singing it once as a treble! Can't wait!!
Just heard this on the radio...had to come and listen to it straight away :')
Yes it is both a result and justification of a fine musical tradition
i feel really sorry for the one person who gave this video a dislike.
pharaoh731 - Could not agree more. Without question the most beautiful, exquisite Christmas song. I first heard this in St Patricks Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland, at the Christmas 9 Lessons and Carols some years ago.
Just, stating the truth!
Excellent, Bob.
My choir is singing this piece very soon I'm very excited🤗
im about to sing it too
@annikee59 TOTALLY agree with you. It is a life experience not to be missed.
Hi TennysonShallott11, following your query, I listened to the piece again and have indeed posted it. It takes awhile for new work to grow on me unless we are dealing with an instant classic. I must say I like 'Mary.' It's unhurried and beautiful.
so cuuuute ^^
Thanks for posting the words, "Tink."
Haven't heard it yet, but will comment when I do!
How sweet
This piece was dedicated to Stephen Cleobury and the the Choir of King's College, Cambridge. Sublime.
Erich B RIP Sir Cleobury
@@spiritdei Indeed! His idea that new works needed to be included in the services/programs was an excellent concept. That a former chorister/choral scholar (Chilcott), who knew both the strengths of the choir and what those acoustics in that Chapel can do wrote such a masterful and beautiful work to display both is a credit to the choral program of King's College.
SINGING FTW
I agree, I uploaded the clips without further editing to get the best quality, but surprisingly the volume is low. Apologies, will see what I can do to fix.
You're very welcome!
Get over the collars and enjoy the divine music!!!
@jazzbeaunola I found these lyrics last year too because as beautiful as it is, it is hard to understand the words. Good of you to post them! Thanks. (It is "the air so still...and also "telling of God being born" ...typos no doubt)
@tlcsmithy - Yes, it's just wonderful. It gives me goosebumps listening to those voices.....I'm sure you know what I mean!
I sing in a church choir, when we're able. Since I'm totally blind and can not read music, I memorize. I would like to know the words to this beautiful carol. Thank you.

😢
Hope it went well Joshymoses1!
The volume is ok for me. The boy at the end his collar must have been uncomfortable for him as he was pulling it down and turning his head to make it more comfortable.
Anybody know where I can get the lyrics to this BEAUTIFUL song?
I can't stop listening to it......
Awesome! It will be better with more bass
5 star
Does anyone have the words to this beautiful song?
I kinda wish that it didn't resolve at the end
Me too!!
Somebody post a link to they lyrics.
Were you at the actual service? As far as I am concerned, this programme alone is worth the TV licence fee although I am a little sad to hear that this wasn't sung at the actual
Christmas Eve service. I guess it was pre-recorded? Would love to know. What happened to Hark! The Herals Angels Sing? I don't recall hearing it and that must be a first!
Does anybody know who's the guy from 0:35 on the right? what's his name? :)
I wish this piece had been written back in the Willcocks days. The choir had such a wonderfully balanced and effortless sound then. I don't know what Stephen Cleobury does with them, but they just don't sound the same. The sections don't blend with each other (especially the tenors, reminiscent of Kermit the Frog), the high notes don't sound effortless (and sometimes don't sound in tune) and his conducting technique is so outrageously poor that it's amazing any of them can follow him at all.
Please send us your version, so we can compare them.
In that case, it's quite ironic that this piece was dedicated to Cleobury!
Mr. Cleobury has a nice sense of dynamics that can be seen in Rutter's Nativity Carol, for example.
Nefertiti PHILIP glass
Why can't girls be in the choir
Nice music but Biblically inaccurate- the fields were not in winter or frosted- sheep were bred in Bethlehem fields for the temple- hence His birth there and were inside in winter- also the shepherds didnt see the star- they had the glorious angels tell them the news- so not so brilliant
