Worlds, Nurture and Smile! :D are all connected, and thats why I love it. Worlds was: an emotionally vulnerable, surrealist approach to songwriting; the album, conceptually, often realizes Porter’s ideas through an off-beat perception of reality. Many tracks describing some sentimental truth through a more metaphorical, artificial context. Nurture was: In Porter’s words, “Nurture” is an album about hope, overcoming despair, and finding purpose. It’s a reflection of his journey through a dark period, where he struggled to find inspiration and meaning. The album’s themes revolve around the beauty of the real world, the importance of hope, and the value of pursuing one’s passions despite adversity. and now, in SMILE! :D: "the album that I was TRYING to write with this nonstop party - NO sincerity, ALL fun, an album that revels in absurdity for a world that rejects context. And that was the plan until I accidentally started confessing how I was really feeling" Russian Roulette, e.g. what kept him alive during the lowest low of his life. "then I close my eyes, gamble with my eyes" meaning he's about to call it, but then he lists the reasons. "I wanna see my mom one more time", "trying not to smile" He said in a interview; "I always think about that anecdote of the dude who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and said like the second after he jumped, he found himself thinking in mid-air that every problem in his life he could solve except for the fact that he jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge… and I was thinking about the same things here" "Maybe this time i won't be alright" is him realizing he would've been successful that time, had he not reminded himself of all the reasons to love and live. The one with his wife, and his mom breaks my heart every single time :( I wanna make music like porter one day. Oh to be this talented. Essentially Smile! :D is a happy, bittersweet ending to what is presumably a story of his life portrayed in this album trilogy. He has spoiled, that there's so much more to tell. This makes me love porters message so much..
love love love this analysis. porter is a great storyteller and i'm looking forward to whatever he's got next. keep going w your music, maybe one day we'll react to u :D
@@thejuniorvarsityshow thank you, those words mean a lot to me. I haven't uploaded in years, but I'm remaking a lot of his songs in my own way and posting them whenever the waters settle.
is there really no happiness was a scrapped demo (he shared on a livestream) for the "actual" collab between him, james ivy and wavedash (that's a whole lunch table of styles) both sounds so good i need a ITRNH pt. 2
Yall are awesome!! Mona Lisa is about him feeling like his fans surround him and obsess over him the way people obsess and surround the Mona Lisa at the louvre, he wrote the song in France! The singing is supposed to be in the perspective of a crazy fan. Hope to hear more from you guys, love the review and love the album too! Take care :)
i absolutley love your editing style and the little title cards!! i do wish we could see ur reactions to the first few seconds of songs thats always fun lol, but awesome reaction :D
I think the difference between Tyler and Porter here between this album is that Porter is self-aware. Even in the more "I'm a celebrity haha" songs like Knock Yourself Out, Porter is still very real about his feelings and almost sarcastic in a way...? Porter talks about being a celebrity, the weight of that and how it bothers him, while also not trying to stroke his own ego about being such and being very vulnerable about things that still make him human. That with acknowledging the fans chasing him around do so as a form of love and that he does genuinely need those people to hold him up on that pillar of his life is why this album's topic works.
I subscribed immediately after that sad machine deadpan joke just for yall (for real thoughl u guys are so funny lmao) edit: also yall are Ivy Leaguers literally me when I see jimmy in the wild i fuck with yall
In Russian Roulette, the "Funny Monkey takes a piss into his own mouth" line is a reference to a famous review that Pitchfork gave to one of the band Jet's albums. They literally gave the album a 0.0 score and the album review was just a UA-cam video of a monkey peeing in its own mouth.
Great reaction! Loved the commentary and will be subscribing. If you like songs about fans that aren't necessarily positive (Cheerleader) you should check out "Idle Worship" by Paramore off of their album After Laughter!
