Easier to Love You just has some of the most beautiful theming and songwriting of his whole discography. The nurture vocals harmonizing with the smile vocals is just ugh
LOVED this album!! already listened thrice over definitely get why some might not vibe with some bits but i really adore it, probably my favorite album of the year so far, that 5 track run at the end is SO good it is 100% a driving album, it REALLY fits in the car doesn't overtake nurture as my favorite (since that's probably my favorite album EVER) but i love it so much
I saw Year of the Cup as more of a broader theme about struggling with your own personality due to a desire to be liked. Porter is open about his historically very intense need to have people think positively of him, so he indulges his fans and relationships in whatever makes them click better. I think the parallel with the Wayne sample is that Wayne, being criticized for substance abuse, retorts that "what's in his cup" is a major factor that contributed to his creative success. In the same way, Porter has his own "cup" that, while unhealthy and sometimes abusive, has affected his career in many ways. I think alcohol can definitely be included in that message but I think it's broader than that and I think it's interesting :>
this was my exact interpretation of it! it's SUCH a good song but i guess i understand why it's generally on the lower side of most of the fanbases ranking so far
Dullscythe is in my top 5 of Porter songs and it was disliked a bit when nurture came out. Hopefully people change their mind like they did on Dullscythe
I just recently saw his Smile XD live tour, and I gotta say, hearing this music live was incredible. I actually didn't really care for Mona Lisa until I heard it live, but since I've seen that show, I've been obsessed with the entire album.
this was definitely a grower for me. First listen was definitely lukewarm for me, but now rly enjoy it. It definitely doesn't top nurture for me, but that is literally my favourite album of all time for pretty personal reasons sooooo i doubt much will... still a really solid album
Me too, it took me a good handful of listens to really absorb the project and I honestly didn’t love it at all initially, but I kept finding myself humming the hooks and at this point every time I listen to it I love it more. Nurture is still goated tho
youre so much more chill than most other music people i love it its really nice i cant watch a lot of other people theyre always very upset all the time or way too energetic /agressive for me . i just found you and i love your personality & for what i think about this album i absolutely adore every part of it, his music is really important to me and it hit all the right parts ive needed and its been the only thing in my car since it dropped
Holy shtt!!! I knew both Goodbye To a World and KYOXD but didn’t connect the dots that it was the same guy up until know. He’s the type of artist you don’t really know who he is but love their music. Thanks for putting him under my radar, he’s great.
Funny how different reactions can be towards one song. Russian Roulette is probably my favorite of all the singles. Also Id probably put this on the same level as Worlds and slightly below Nurture
Music wise, I'd put it below the other two albums. That's just cause my personal distaste for pop music. BUT writing wise it's up there with his other music.
So a good way to think of the “narrative” regarding this album. Nurture was about the art block Porter faced after making Worlds and how it debilitated him mentally. Smile is about Porter’s relationship with the fans that Worlds created and the ways that success affected him in the long run. If you listen to this project thinking like how a fan views their idol it makes more sense.
I’ve been in love with porter’s style since get your wish, which is still my favorite song of his, I’m so happy to see another album from him but shhh I haven’t listened to it myself yett
Worlds and Nurture are top five for me. The singles took some growing for me, but listening to the album front to back makes it all work. It’s another banger.
I really love Easier To Love You; the vibe is just so smooth and the lyrics are so uplifting. Doing my best to be someone my younger self would be proud of.
I did notice the album got more lowkey in the second half!! It made sense when you explained the party thing. It’s my first time listening to an entire Porter album so I’m not a longtime fan but the second half of the album really had my attention. Imo his voice is made for that soft and sweetness, it’s very comforting. The other tracks aren’t really my vibe but the album as a whole is growing on me 🙂
Mona Lisa is definitely my favorite of the non-singles, it’s such a banger and yesss Frost Children are awesome! I think it’s a really strong album personally, though I get the critique that you thought there might be more silly songs too. I love the singles, but the back half of the album is my favorite stretch rn and I keep listening from Easier to Love You onward. I think my favorite single is currently Russian Roulette because I go through such a rollercoaster of emotions while listening to it and I think it encapsulates his idea for the album very well.
Russian roulettes “maybe this time I won’t be alright” Is where it hits hard. If you’ve never been depressed, I’m not sure you’d feel it the same way I have
I'm always so surprised how much Porters tracks grow on me. Almost every song on this album I wasn't sure about on first listen, but now I love all of them in their own way.
Love your "genrephobia" videos 😁 I'm a longtime Porter fan and this album is so fun. I just wanna scream my face off out loud in the best way possible XD
I enjoyed all the singles and ITRNH? was definitely my favorite of the rest of the songs. Though a lot of the songs hit me in the same way as bo burnham’s inside which kind of left me unsure of how I felt about the album. He definitely sounds more like the performer who doesn’t want to perform anymore because of his audience and it’s just coming off the wrong way for me.
It's really unfair for anyone to compare this album to Nurture (which was a Godsend especially durung the pandemic) and Worlds (a trendsetter). This album is great, even the songs that don't hit are still appreciated. What I find fascinating is that some people like songs that other people don't, which is cool especially for an album with only 10 songs. Overall a great listen and can't wait for his tour!
This album is interesting to me, it's a great album most of the songs are all bangers (sorry, Year of the Cup you're not that good..) and yet, it didn't resonate with me! it wasn't as cohesive as I wished, it's an 8/10 and his sound has matured SO MUCH but i think Worlds and Nurture are more cohesive.
Easier to Love You just has some of the most beautiful theming and songwriting of his whole discography. The nurture vocals harmonizing with the smile vocals is just ugh
real
When the message of that song hit me in the middle I was so astounded
genuinley cried to russian roulette like 20 times since the album came out
Big same
same asf that song speaks to me
real
frrrrrrr
also easier to love you
"I hope he doesnt curse at me and claim to be another musician 😰" got me. lmao

i just will never not hear that clip and in my head go “i’m sittin here looking at keisha like do you love me do you love me not”
I think “Is There Really No Happiness?” is my favorite track on this album. It just slaps every time I listen to it
💯
I just recently saw his Smile XD live tour, and I gotta say, hearing this music live was incredible. I actually didn't really care for Mona Lisa until I heard it live, but since I've seen that show, I've been obsessed with the entire album.
i just saw it too! fantastic show, made me appreciate russian roulette a lot more

I liked the album but after seeing him during the Smile tour it has given me an even more appreciation of the album and themes

No one talking about the “Get Your Wish” melody on the closing track
I thought I was the only one to have heard it TwT thank god I’m not crazy

13:19 “that title.. doesn’t make me wanna smile, porter” fit way too well right before the beat drop, sounded like a producer tag 💀
I love Frost children so much, I am so happy they got featured on this album
yeah he killed it
Yeah, your enthusiasm and honesty perfectly describe the album. Plus, you know, words.
Holy shtt!!! I knew both Goodbye To a World and KYOXD but didn’t connect the dots that it was the same guy up until know. He’s the type of artist you don’t really know who he is but love their music. Thanks for putting him under my radar, he’s great.
New porter fan acquired, welcome to the club
i really like that on every album he switches up his sound it sounds more original that way
Funny how different reactions can be towards one song. Russian Roulette is probably my favorite of all the singles. Also Id probably put this on the same level as Worlds and slightly below Nurture

You have a powerful influence on my playlists these days, sir.
So a good way to think of the “narrative” regarding this album.
Nurture was about the art block Porter faced after making Worlds and how it debilitated him mentally.
Smile is about Porter’s relationship with the fans that Worlds created and the ways that success affected him in the long run.

Man I’m really happy that there’s a space for shit like this on youtube. Just a guy having fun and enjoying an album he likes.
I’ve been in love with porter’s style since get your wish, which is still my favorite song of his, I’m so happy to see another album from him but shhh I haven’t listened to it myself yett
Easier to Love You hits way too fucking hard, and Everything To Me will make me cry during the tour (it’s a flashlight song).
Is There Really No Happiness is on another level.
Best track for sure!
This one fucking hiit
Worlds and Nurture are top five for me. The singles took some growing for me, but listening to the album front to back makes it all work. It’s another banger.
GONNA GO SEE HIM LIVE IN SEPTEMBER!
Happy for you!
Gonna see him live in March assuming the tickets come out
I really love Easier To Love You; the vibe is just so smooth and the lyrics are so uplifting. Doing my best to be someone my younger self would be proud of.
I loved the more upbeat songs on this album, Cheerleader, Mona Lisa, KYOXD were my highlights. I felt some of the more sincere songs missed though
I did notice the album got more lowkey in the second half!! It made sense when you explained the party thing. It’s my first time listening to an entire Porter album so I’m not a longtime fan but the second half of the album really had my attention. The “halfway” point for me is everything after Year of the Cup . Loved Kitsune Maison, Easier to Love You and the closing track:)
Mona Lisa is definitely my favorite of the non-singles, it’s such a banger and yesss Frost Children are awesome!

The first song and the frost children feature sound like youtuber intros to me😭
love u man
13:49 just the face upon hearing Porter's falsetto...me too. Bro can sing.
One of my favorite things is looking when the first singles released and seeing how many people absolutely didn't get it at all.
I'm always so surprised how much Porters tracks grow on me.
Almost every song on this album I wasn't sure about on first listen, but now I love all of them in their own way.
Love your "genrephobia" videos 😁

So good wish he’d announce the Australia tour dates lol
