The irresponsible mantra “sorry I’m like this” - that line hits hard. Looking into your past and realizing you’ve used that cop-out of a response on people you loved.
this song is the most underrated from the album, because it feels like a ballad of self discovery and regret. porter cooked with this album and music video
The art direction is amazing. If the music video for Knock Yourself Out is SMILE! on the surface, I feel like this video represents SMILE! at the core the most.
i'm really glad this one got a music video, it's apparently the album underdog but it's the most vocal-forward song on the album and, to me, the most vulnerable one. even though it's not ENTIRELY about alcohol abuse, i personally read it like that, specifically all the embarrassing things you do when you're relying on alcohol to compensate for your anxiety in social situations, and how even if you think you're having a great time it can go downhill so fast. that moment you go a little overboard and then the emotional outburst that can ruin entire relationships or make you feel like an absolute idiot in front of a crowd or in front of your friends. hearing this song for the first time kind of made me confront all the times i had done that and made me go, oh, i can't keep doing this to myself. so it's nice that it's getting the recognition it deserves from porter himself and i hope it grows on everyone else too
Regardless of how people feel about the Lil' Wayne interview snippets - this is honestly the most emotionally vulnerable song on SMILE! :D, and it deserves its flowers.
Agreed. And I feel like the interview audio pairs very well as it does a great job at demonstrating the mindset that Porter seems to have some regret about.
the voice crack on "perfect apology" is one of the most breathtakingly honest moments on an album that really centers the theme of honesty/dishonesty under the eye of fame and i love it
This song originally was originally the “mid song” off the album. At first I was thinking why the frick is there some interview in my Porter Robinson song. But dang, this freaking song grew on me a crap ton. When you really get down to the lyrics you realize how deep this song is. And now I’m singing every lyric including the interview bits xD ❤
Easily my favorite song on the album. It hits me to my core. Porter's never gonna see this, but this song is what made me realize Porter struggles with exactly the same things that I do. I've never felt so directly understood by a song before. It's giving me hope that the need for validation and the insecurity doesn't mean I'm doomed to a miserable life of fucking up all my friendships and relationships. I'll be alive next year.
It's probably because it feels the most "unpolished" compared to the slicker and tighter production of the rest of the album. It feels more like a confessional piece rather than a song if you get what I mean
i know a lot of people dislike the interview snippets in this song, but i wonder how many of them know it’s a midwest emo trope. you don’t have to like them but i enjoy the context they give to the rest of the song
The raw emotion in the voice, the one take vocals, the piano, the rustic guitar, the heavy hitting lines, the subject and the interview. A perfect concoction for my favorite track on the album. I am so happy that this underdog track, like Dullscythe, got a MV. This is THE slowcook track...and I have faith people will feel that they misjudged it.
@thinecyber_cat (this is the same comment copied and pasted from another reply I made, but I think it perfectly communicates my thought process) for me, it ruins the flow of the song 🤷♂️. It's also a bit heavy-handed as the lyrics communicate the meaning perfectly fine. If it was just a short snippet at the end of the song, it wouldn't bother me, but it's nearly a minute and a half spread at 3 points throughout. I won't ever disagree that it's good artistically, I see what it's going for and I respect it. It just hinders the listening experience for this song, ESPECIALLY on multiple listens
right? If it's really the lil Wayne snippet that people dont like then that's such an odd take to me. I think its amazing that he put a lil Wayne sample like wow especially if you grew up with rap
@@TOMMYx95x after 4-5 listens the lil wayne parts become grating. westwood saying "its none of my GoD daMneD BUSINESS" is so cringe. the original interview was already so hard to watch because of how unprofessional and rude the interviewer is.
At first I didn’t like this song either but when I actually read and understood the lyrics it finally clicked with me and now I really really love it and sing every word every time it comes on
Grew up to Lil Wayne as a millennial in high school. Went to college and evolved into Porters music. Recently been listening to all of Waynes music before Smile album drop.. Then hearing Wayne on Porter was a deja vu moment for me. Goosebumps.. how was that possible.
Porter Robinson, if you read this, you’ve actually made my childhood good with all of your songs. My favorite is sad machine and I’ve been listening since elementary school
Take me back to that early internet vibe Porter, with real people, and not worrying about only showing that "version of me that was safe and sanitized thoroughly". But for now, all we can do is to make sure to go outside, hug your mom, and Smile! :D Things will get better
The piano riff and instrumentals are so wonderful in this song. Absolutely in love with this, it just seems so in the moment and evokes feelings I never thought I'd see again.
I liked this song since I've first listen to it. I also used to be bothered by the interview snippets but then i decide to just accept the song for what it is and my enjoyment in listening to this song skyrocket. Now its easily in my top 3
This song is personally one of his best. The interview is really what made me love it ever since I heard it the first time, and the lyrics of the song was beautifully created from such a short yet interesting narrative. Such an under-appreciated track

He truly is an artist, I love the quality of this video, it's as fuzzy as the memories you have after drinking a little too hard, yet they still sting.
I deeply admire Porter’s stream of consciousness approach, where the fluctuations of the mind are not only transformed into music and visuals but also reflected in the way he releases and performs his work. His worldview is so complete, elegant, and profound. These stories and atmospheres, carried by intense and heavy emotions, strike deeply at the hearts of people. We are incredibly fortunate to live in the same era as Porter.
Porter!!! Oh I so regret missing your show at the Hollywood Bowl. You are AN ARTIST, and thank you for sharing your art with us 🥹 We need it so much! I’m just a 35 year old female artist trying to make it work myself. Your voice is sooo valued, holy crap. Please keep creating 😂❤

Fr. Honestly, this is the song that resonated the most with me (along with kitsume mason) and led me to listen to this album nonstop.
Love the interview audio because it pairs perfectly with the sentiment behind the track. One of my favorites on the album for sure.
Musically, for me, it feels straight from nurture, besides the samples lol
this song is definitely a grower not a shower

Can we take a moment to appreciate that this is in 480p and feels like ancient UA-cam? ahhh I love it
something ill always love about this song is how imperfect the vocal take is. pitch corrected to hell and so raw. truly a standout from the album.
