- On October 22, 2024 I hiked to Odessa Lake via Bear Lake, RMNP. It was a very windy and cold day. Notchtop Mountain was the star of this hike. Notchtop dominated the sky with rushing clouds passing by. I'm really glad I brought long pants because I hiked all the way to Lake Helene in shorts. Mountain Forecast said 10 mph winds. Ha! More like 20+. No more timed entry for RMNP and no shuttle either. You know what that means...The early hiker gets the parking spot. It will be nuts on the weekends. It was a beautiful hike and day in spite of the chill. Winter is coming. 9 miles and 2000 feet of elevation gain.

Great hike! Its been years since I went there - this is an inspiration to put it back on the list.
I only hiked to Odessa this one time this year. Now there's too much snow to get down Joe Mills Mountain. It can be reached from the Fern Lake Trailhead but snowshoes would most likely be needed past Fern Lake. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel.

It's been hard to keep up with everyone this year, but winter is here and that means not much hiking for the next few months. I plan on binge watching everyone's content I've missed. Most hikes from now on will be simple because no one can get to the spectacular areas. I do have a number of videos from this summer that I will be publishing when we can't hike. Thank you so much! Please read Alltrails reviews this time of year. I haven't seen anyone get there. Most people say that the snow keeps covering the trail to Lake Helene and it's deep. You most likely will need snowshoes. Let me know if you're successful. Stay safe and warm. ( I check not only both trails to Odessa, Bear Lake and Fern Lake but also the trail conditions to Lake Helene.)
@@TrekkingTheRockies Too much snow for us, so went to Brainard, nice hike out and back from the winter parking lot.

I don’t usually hike in much wind over here due to all the dead standing trees.
It's always a shock when you hike in the first cold wind of the season. I'm sorry your trails have so many trees down. That can be painful to climb over. Thanks so much for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
@@TrekkingTheRockies Actually it's the standing trees that are the issue when the wind blows. All the beetle kill makes it dangerous to be running around out there in strong winds. Have a blessed Sunday!

Thank you so much! The weather was wicked but it painted such a beautiful backdrop on the mountains. Yes, that was a hammock and I also found on Joe Mills Mountain an overnight abandoned backpack with snow on it. I took photos and GPS coordinates and reported to the wilderness office. I looked around for someone but didn't see anyone who the backpack may belong to. It's a mystery. Thanks so much for watching.
@@TrekkingTheRockies Interesting about finding that gear. I'm glad you reported it just in case. FYI - I heard on a youtube channel yesterday that RMNP will not be holding back ANY timed entry permits starting next year. Pretty disappointing...I liked that option to ensure the weather forecast looks good. I guess I'll be getting to the Bear Lake corridor check-in station before 5:00 am next summer. Keep up hthe great work - love your channel!
