Lost Lake Loop-Grand Mesa National Forest-Colorado-Day Hike
On September 10, 2024 I hiked to Lost Lake in the Grand Mesa National Forest. There is a day use Fee of $8 to to enter, bring cash. This was a very easy hike. Almost anyone can do it. I saw an entire daycare of young ones hiking to Lost Lake. Lost Lake was beautiful with it's crystal clear emerald green color. This was a fun hike. I added the Glacial Springs Trail to the Rim View Trail back to Mesa Lake. The Mesa lakes are beautiful too and have lots of fish in them. 6.6 miles and 1087 feet of elevation gain on my loop hike. If you are just wanting to hike to Lost Lake, it's a 2.7 miles round trip and less than 500 feet of elevation gain. From the Mesa Lake Loop it's 4 miles.
This hike was part of our Colorado road trip:
Ice Lake in the San Juan National Forest

Horsetooth Rock & Horsetooth Falls Loop Trail-Lory State Park-Colorado Day Hike
Переглядів 15016 годин тому
On September 12, 2023 I solo hiked up to Horsetooth Rock and Horsetooth Falls. In this video I will take you to almost the summit of Horsetooth Rock, then loop around to Horsetooth Falls and hike out. * I did not actually summit Horsetooth Rock, due to hiking alone and the poor condition of my trail runners. There have been a number of deaths and severe injuries from falls from the summit. Dave...
Boss and Hunt Lakes-San Isabel National Forest Colorado-Solo Day Hike

On June 18, 2024 I solo hiked to Boss and Hunt Lakes in the San Isabel National Forest. The trailhead is off of highway 50 just west of Salida Colorado. This is a very steep hike but well worth the effort to both Boss and Hunt Lakes. The first mile is a 4X4 road for only high clearance vehicles. There is a parking lot at the top where the trailhead begins. I had to park at the lower lot. This w...

On November 4, 2023 we hiked to Odessa Lake from the Fern Lake Trailhead in Rocky Mountain National Park. (This is not a typo in dates) I never published this video before now because we were hoping to hike here in November 2024. Except Winter arrived two months early with a humongous winter storm the first week of November 2024, it lasted the whole week. A number of winter storms followed the ...

On September 11, 2024 I solo hiked to Pitkin Lake in the Eagles Nest Wilderness just outside of Vail Colorado. This is a very strenuous hike. It took me 6 hours to complete. I needed a lot of breather breaks and filming always adds at least an hour or more to my hike. I was hoping to see a Mountain Goat but there were none here this day. Very beautiful trail and lake. 10 miles and 3000 feet of ...

On November 17, 2024, We hiked the Three Lakes Loop, Sprague Lake, Bear Lake and Bierstadt Lake. A very frigid hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. I was betting on Mountain Forecast, 5 mph winds for Hallett Peak. Ha! More like 25 mph and gusts above. We almost called a "Hike Fail", but hiking in the trees, it wasn't too bad. By the time we got to Bierstadt Lake it was much more pleasant. 8.2 ...

On December 6, 2024 We set out to hike in the Lump Ridge area of Rocky Mountain National Park. We hiked to West Creek Falls from the McGraw Ranch. I love hiking here this time of year. West Creek Falls doesn't freeze over as fast as the other waterfalls in RMNP. Not many people hike here this time of year. We had the entire hike to ourselves. There is only space for 12 cars to park. Most people...

On November 11, 2024 We hiked to The Loch and Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. The week before, Colorado had a week long significant snowstorm. The most snow was in the southern mountains but RMNP received 30 inches and all the trails were covered. The first people out after a storm are the snowshoers. They pack the trails down and people like Dave and I can spike hike. Rocky Mountai...

On November 3, 2024 we hiked to Crater Lakes, all three, in the James Peak Wilderness-Colorado. It was a very cold morning and thankfully no wind the entire day. The snow laced mountains just added to the beauty of our hike. There wasn't as much snow as I anticipated but we needed to use our spikes in one area coming down from Upper Crater Lakes. This is a beautiful area to hike and backpack. N...

On October 22, 2024 I hiked to Odessa Lake via Bear Lake, RMNP. It was a very windy and cold day. Notchtop Mountain was the star of this hike. Notchtop dominated the sky with rushing clouds passing by. I'm really glad I brought long pants because I hiked all the way to Lake Helene in shorts. Mountain Forecast said 10 mph winds. Ha! More like 20 . No more timed entry for RMNP and no shuttle eith...

We started our hike at Bear Lake and hiked down to the Glacier Gorge where we took the Fire Trail up to the Loch Vale junction. On October 10, 2024, I solo hiked to Ptarmigan Lake. Ptarmigan Lake is a very remote lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. Ptarmigan Lake is very special to me, this was my second solo hike ever in RMNP in 2022. She sits on the western side of the continental divide. I have yet to hike all the way down to the lake. This is such a long day hike for me. 6.5 hours of moving time, but I take a lot ...

On October 26, 2024 we set off on a new adventure in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. There are two remote high Alpine Lakes above and beyond Jasper Lake. Our goal this day was to hike to Storm Lake. You will need a GPS to navigate to this area. Storm Lake sits at an elevation of 11,418 feet. She is more than 500 feet above Jasper Lake. We didn't know if we would make it up there. There was snow an...

What a gorgeous hike, and do many lakes! I bet Fall can be really spectacular, looking at all of the aspens. Thanks so much!
New sub! Beautiful hike and amazing views-thanks for sharing your adventure! Looking forward to more!
Thanks so much for subscribing. I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. There are plenty more adventures to come. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Looks like such a beautiful hike. I love the sounds of the water and such pretty views!!❤❤
Awe, I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!
Beautiful day and a nice hike!
I'm happy you enjoyed the hike. Thanks so much for watching!
Pretty views, looks pretty dry. The summit section did look very dicey, especially solo.
Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. Late Summer is a great time to hike here. Much more aired and not much shade. The actual summit is wide and curved with a death drop. That's why I included the memorial to the man who lost his life. Sadly others have too. I had the worst hiking shoes in 2023. I fell, slipped and tripped all the time. In 2024 I only hit the ground twice and wasn't injured, thanks to my Solomon hiking trail runners with grip. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Nice video and views 🙂👍
Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. I appreciate your comment and watching the video.
Nice hike and views. Yep, that looks a bit sketchy....best not done alone.
I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
A very pleasant walk. Here in Wisconsin, I miss those nice trails. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed the hike.
Excuse me mam I was wanting to plan a trip in march to Denver but given the foot of the Rockies is only an hour further north we wanted to make a mini trip to the National Park, should one not hike during that time of year?
March is still very snowy in the Rockies. We receive the most snow storms in March and April in the High Alpine. You can hike but you will need winter clothing and gear, if you plan to hike at elevations 9000 feet or above. You will need micro spikes and trekking poles. Condition are not always favorable so you will need to keep up on trail conditions by checking AllTrails for current trail reviews. There are few trails that may be packed down, such as Emerald Lake and Mills Lake. If a snow storm comes through near the time you are visiting, the trails will be covers and it won't be possible to know the route without having experience with a GPS for your route. Sometimes RMNP has guided hiking trips. You can call the Visitors Center to check. I have a video from March 2024. I'm sorry, it is not uploaded in 4K but you can still see how it was in March of 2024. You can also just stick to Bear Lake, Sprague Lake and Alberta Falls. All lower in elevation, but there will still be snow most likely. Here is the video of my hike in March of 2024 ua-cam.com/video/j-KQcc48V4k/v-deo.html I hope you can find a way to see RMNP. It's beautiful!!!
@@TrekkingTheRockies thank you so much mam very informative I will check out AllTrails and do my best to keep up with conditions leading up to our trip and for the days we will be visiting me and my family will also make sure to get the gear as you listed thank u so much again
@ You are so welcome.🙂
Another place to try! Great to see the early season conditions and snow.
There's even a little tarn higher up from Hunt Lake but there was too much snow to get there at this time. Thanks so much for watching.
Wonderful to see, hear and feel the runoff in the creek. Beautiful alluring backdrop to Upper Waterdog Lake. Ascending there could present interesting route-finding puzzles. Thanks for the video!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the sounds of nature. I do too. I never wear earbuds. The sounds of the forest is music to my ears. After such long winters here in Colorado, to see and hear the creeks flowing again is magical. Thanks so much for watching.
A very nice early summer hike. Good music. Interesting rusty rocks at Boss Lake outlet. Thanks!
You're so welcome and thanks so much for watching. The decomposed rock in the area you mentioned, is very rolly and slick heading up the narrow path. My right foot slipped. I didn't go down but it sure scared me momentarily. Be careful there if you do this hike.
Very nice 🙂
I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. 😊
@TrekkingTheRockies 👍🙂
Lovely video my friend!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and hike.
@ 🤗🤗🤗🤗
I want a cabin in the forest too!
Cute!!! Thanks so much for watching.
06:21 that's Taylor Mountain on the ride side, a high 13er. We're camping on the north side of it just a few days before you did this hike. It was a wonderful time when everything was coming back to life after a long winter. Thanks for sharing
It's a small world. You and your wife were hiking to Devils Thumb Lake the day we hiked to Skyscraper Reservoir too in 2024. It was hard to find mostly snow free trails while we were there in Salida. Do you have a video of your trip? Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
We did Tabguache Peak on that trip which I had a video for. Plan to do Mt Ouray near Monarch Pass this summer
I found it. I just watched it again and left a comment this time. Thanks for letting me know.
Cool video & hike.
Thanks so much! The 2024 winters snowpack was enormous, just like California's. It was hard to find hikes at this time of the year. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I've enjoyed binge watching your channel and dreaming of summer.
It was a bad mosquito year! I forgot late June thru aug 1 was so buggy
You are so right. We wear 100% Deet when the skeeters are insane. On the hike to Waterdog Lakes, the day before, my legs are so shinny from the mosquito repellant. I can see it in the video. LOL!!! Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Stunning - the views never dissapoint. 👍
Approaching Odessa Lake is always magical. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Could you make a video on how to prepare for a hike? What to do? what to bring? what to wear?
I have been thinking of doing that, especially Winter hiking. Winter hiking is always unpredictable. With the frequent winter storms, the trails get covered over. There isn't enough hiking, snowshoeing traffic to pack more than a couple of trails down in between. So the options are extremely limited in the high alpine, above 9000 feet. Thank you for the suggestion. ( I've been waiting for a break and some multi clear days to get back up in the high country.} It just hasn't happened. We'll be back.
@ I live in OKC. I’ve never been to Colorado. I don’t do snow. The snow trails can be dangerous. I have my water pack, and snacks. I do know I’ll need to check into the rangers office and get the pass.
@ I plan on going this summer.
You will have a wonderful time. It will be crowded in RMNP. Arrive early, have your pass and reservation. There's always a long line of cars at the entrance. www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/10086910/ticket/10086912
We've done Bear Lake to Fern Lake--the opposite of part of this. It was hard enough in the summer, but why would you ever want to hike this in the winter, given traction, slipping, cold, etc? Plus, other than "the snow is beautiful" type comment, there's no lush greenery or trees with leaves. Bully for doing it, but just sayin.'
Summers beauty fades fast in the Rockies. Once the snow accumulates on the trail leading down to Odessa Lake, from Bear Lake, it is too dangerous to hike. My channel is intended for those like us, who what to keep hiking year round, when possible. Thanks for watching. I do have a video I did a few months ago hiking to Odessa Lake from Bear Lake, it's fall so no flowers or green grasses. ua-cam.com/video/q2THB42Gtq4/v-deo.html
You didn’t mention it but I assumed that you wore traction devices. I use yak trax
Yes, we use micro spikes. It was an on and off with the spikes type of hike. Dry, icy and snowy trail conditions. Thanks so much for watching.
@ I hate the repeated on and off process
Odessa freezes early! Great video.
Still learning. Each winter brings a new experience and surprises. Hope you've been able to be out there...Thanks for watching. 😊🥾
@@TrekkingTheRockies That's a great trip any time of year! Good for the viewers to be able to see early November conditions.
Nice video and views 👍
Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I'm happy you enjoyed the hike.
Great job, Vickie....difficult hike....beautiful country. I lived in Vail, CO and did lots of snow skiing but did not do any hiking. :)
We both have great memories of the Gore Range. I think your life skiing the Rockies is amazing. Thanks so much!!!
Vickie & David.....I very much enjoyed this recap of your adventures in 2024. So beautiful......... :)
Awe, thanks so much. It was the best hiking year ever. Combined, we hiked to more than 30 new lakes and saw many more from above. Our 2024 hiking season was cut short by two months. Winter arrived early and it has continued to snow and blow up there. It's why we haven't been out in over a month. There's really no way to get anywhere that we would love to hike to. Snowshoeing is just too exhausting and I'd probably trip too often and fall on my face, LOL!!! I'm glad you enjoyed the recap of our 2024 year. Thanks so much for supporting us.
Beautiful lake and nice video. The Gore Range is so underrated and void of crowd. Hope it stays that way :)
I think because of all the steep elevation gain and miles, hikers know it's going to be a real leg burner. Perhaps that's why these areas are not frequented as much? I hope one day to hike to Willow Lakes, like in your video. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
What a beautiful hike! That’s some steep elevation. Good scenery always helps the climb. ❤❤
Thank you so much! It was fun to hike in a new location and there's lots more trails in the Eagles Nest Wilderness. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for commenting.
Definitely one to add to the list!
I hope to hike more in the Eagles Nest Wilderness, Gore Lake and Snow Lake combo. Thanks for watching.
Wow that was spectacular and sounds like a hefty workout. Way to go! Happy New Year
Happy New Year! It was a fun adventure in a new wilderness. Thanks so much for watching.
Beautiful video! I’ve explored this area but never in the winter! The snow makes it even more gorgeous but I’m sure the hiking is much slower!❤❤
Thank you so much!!! I'm happy you enjoyed the video. You'll have to hike here in the spring, mid March to mid April, that's when the opening video was filmed. It's still winter up there until mid May or later. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Wow! Great job on your amazing video. I really enjoyed seeing all your adventures and getting ideas for future exploration. Your shots of Betty lake and Lake Helene were especially beautiful. I would love for you to explore the Sierras and the greater Yellowstone ecosystem to see the beautiful footage you could capture
You are so kind. Thank you so very much for your comment. I worked really hard on this one and it was worth it. I love the Sierras. We want to backpack the Sabrina Basin, back to all the lakes. Maybe in 2026. We did a backpack trip from the Rush Creek Trailhead to Thousand Island Lake and Garnet Lakes two years ago in the Ansel Adams Wilderness but that was before I had a GoPro. I'm happy you enjoyed the video.
@TrekkingTheRockies Sabrina basin is an excellent choice! My wife and I did three days there this past summer and also 3 days in the Big Pine Lakes basin
The Sierras are a magical. Congratulations of your adventures. Sounds amazing.
Great video! Just found your channel and I think I recognize your husband. Did he worked in Building A for the USFS Contracts & Appraisals group? If so, tell him Mike Shettles says hello (I was down the hall)!
Oh Wow! It's a small world. He remembers you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
Looks like Mr. Dave has some miles to make up in 2025! Must have been fun looking back at the travels. Going for another 13er this year? Thanks as always for the videos.
He thought he'd hiked more. He takes off so much time for backpacking, the trick is to go on Sunday when people are leaving but that means days off during the week. He was too busy during a work week to day hike with me. Hopefully more this year. Yes, I'd like to hike another 13'er. Maybe Mount Parnassus? I wanted to do Ypsilon last year but didn't get around to it before they closed Old Fall River Road in RMNP. I'll pick a remote lake that I haven't seen over a summit. We hiked to more than 30 new lakes, first time, in 2024. The same goal for this year and longer more remote backpacking trips. Thanks for watching the video and commenting. I'm happy you enjoyed it.
A fine compilation. Expansive panoramas from Mt. Sniktau. Beautiful lakes, notably Ice Lake and Chasm Lake. Thanks!
Thank you so much!!! I'm happy you enjoyed the video. Ice Lake was unreal in it's beauty. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Blessed 🙌
Thank you so much. Blessing to you too.
Gosh, this was so much fun. I'm older now but spent a lot of time in RMNP/Snowy range and you have captured their beauty and that of the Rockies exceptionally well. Really enjoy the segments and hope you continue on, good looking couple, keep going higher. You Tube pay them more they are worth it, subscriber.
Awe, thanks so much. I'm happy you enjoyed the film from our 2024 treks. We have big plans for 2025. Thanks so much for watching.
Beautiful and well put together video! A lot of favorites and some new ones to try. What amazing lighting you had at Ice Lake! And the clouds at Helene and Odessa!

@@ruggedland Thank you so much. You and your channel are an inspiration. Can't wait to see where you take us in 2025. 😊🥾😊🥾
Amazing year! I got 24 hikes, 133 miles, 19,000 feet, 83 hours in the Rockies of Colorado this year. Always room for more! Can’t wait for next season even if I’m enjoying ski season first . Thanks for sharing as always
Congratulations on your hiking season!!! I wish I could ski and afford it. 😉 That's great that you are so active year round. We get in hikes when we can this time of year but it keeps snowing higher up and the trails just get blown over with snow. Thanks for commenting and watching the video. We appreciate it.
@@TrekkingTheRockiesI was just saying how much I miss $2 timed entry over my ski parking 😂
was there anyone else camping there at red deer lake when you went?
Yes, especially the second night. There are not many sites to choose from. We saw three good ones. It's best to go during the week. We lucked out. Thanks for watching.
How does most people do with the elevation gain? How long did it take for you to walk this?
I like to enjoy these easier hikes. It took me 4 hours. A much more slow climb from Sprague Lake to Bear Lake, than hiking to some of the higher lakes in RMNP. This time of year the trail between Sprague Lake and Bear Lake may not be packed down snow. The park received lots of snow this week. Thanks for watching.
How’s the elevation? Do you have any videos on preparing? Checking in at the Rangers?
Elevation gain is in the video and in description. It's not super hard. One of the easier hikes in the park. We hike a lot so elevation gain is not an issue, sometimes on a really steep hike, we just take lots of breather breaks. Thanks so much for watching.
Cool winter hike!
Thank you. There's not much to choose from this time of year, especially with the wicked winter winds and 95% of the trails buried in deep snow. We've been waiting for a clear low wind day for a few weeks. Thanks for watching.
Nive Hike!
Thanks so much for watching!!!
Hello, "Trekking The Rockies"! Thank you for showing us such a great video! I found it very interesting! I'm looking forward to your next work! Have a nice day!
You are so welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. With winter in the Rockies, there's not much to choose from for hikes that I already haven't done. We'll get out there over long months of winter. You should check out this past summers, 2024, hikes and backpacking trips on our channel. We have lots of new adventures planned for 2025. Thanks for watching.
Nice panoramas of Hallett Peak and neighbors. Beautiful jays!
I'm happy you enjoyed the hike and video. It's so windy and cold this time of year in the Rockies. The Grey Jay's are the friendliest birds with the prettiest chirp. Thanks for watching and commenting.
_This video is absolutely stunning! The Three Lakes Loop Hike in Rocky Mountain National Park looks like an incredible winter wonderland adventure. I'm so inspired by your courage and determination to hike in these conditions. The scenery is breathtaking, and you've captured it perfectly. I'm so happy you enjoyed the hike and video. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
What a great idea for a loop! Nice distance and variety. I like the trails and forest between Bear Lake and Bierstadt Lake even more than Bierstadt itself.
I'm happy you enjoyed the hike and video. It's a great loop, I have a video on what it looks like in early summer too, very green. The trees saved us from freezing to death from the bitter winds. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
