    You nailed it brother. I was fixated with getting a divot after the ball and purchased a divot board, which is a good aide to be sure, to help me out. Prior to this I was hitting my irons well taking a small divot now and then, but I was generally pleased with my iron play - just wanted that divot. Using the divot board I started to really focus on making that contact at the ball and at first it was going well, but then my swing went to hell. I was shanking balls, hitting fat, thin, you name it. Very frustrating. Now I know why. I had started to really hit down on the ball/mat and totally forgot about my swing all together. The focus on hitting down totally wrecked the good parts of my swing that I had worked so hard on over the winter. The more I tried to correct the worse it got. Hopefully now that you slapped me in the face with the problem I can get back on track. Thanks MSG.
    Just following up a month later. Yeah it made a world of difference. There is another video of yours about an "on the course" drill or swing thought where you say to focus on the handle and take it down toward the ball. That one helped me out a lot too. Got me swinging a lot smoother and making good contact. Thanks again.

    1000% agree with this. There’s so many teachers that say pretend you’re driving a diagonal nail down into the ground. Don’t do that…. You will chunk it and screw up your front arms elbow.

    I've been playing golf for 20 years and this is probably the best advice I ever received to help my golf game. I tried this simple technique at the range and I was hitting the ball so clean and crisp. I couldn't believe it. I was just amazed. Thanks again! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

    Mr SG, for the past several weeks, I’ve been trying to understand how to swing down but not stick the club into the ground even though I was hitting the ball first. In the last couple of days, I happened upon keeping my right elbow attached to my body, exactly the way you just explained in this video. Your explanation in this video confirmed that I fell into something right!! If only I could have learned this a long time ago, it would have helped my game tremendously. Thank you for telling us that I fell into something right!😊

    I've literally never seen a video that I disagree with and agree with at the same time. "hit down on the ball" is told to people because they are trying to lift the ball with their wrists. But your right elbow in and turn your right shoulder is spot on. Well done.

    Great tip... I caught Bernhard Langer making this exact point on Golf Channel. And he's done pretty well with it! Took it to the range today, and was amazed: much more consistent contact, ball flight, freer and easier swing in general. Got a feeling, too, "sweeping" is much easier on the body as we age... I'm all in!

    Now this video I agree with 100%. When I was younger, I could pick the ball off the turf and have distance control. Now I am 58, so no golf lessons on TV when I was a kig, but once they did start up when I was about 25, I saw them teaching about taking a divot, and I have been unable to hit a good iron shot since. Other than my wedges. My wedges are the best clubs in my bag.

    Feel vs real. Different strokes for different folks. The sensation of hitting down on the golf ball works well for me and can work well for many people, especially those who fan open the club on the takeaway. Keeping the club face pointed at the golf ball during the takeaway feels like I'm going to hit down on it, but that's not what happens in the downswing. Enjoy your channel and enthusiasm. Every golfer needs a different concept and feel.

    You pretty much hit the nail on the head with what my problem had been for years, after hearing "hit down on the ball" for so long, and trying to do just that, my backswing became too vertical and steep, and I was essentially "chopping wood" when it came to my downswing. And video of my swing proved I had to stand up during the downswing, again just as you described, to subconsciously compensate for this issue. I think there are so many old golf adages (eg. "keep your head down", "hit down on the ball", "put the ball up by your left heel when hitting driver", among others) that are inherently flawed and end up getting exaggerated by most of us weekend golfers to the point where it is amazing we can hit the ball at all!

  • @ReSourceEnergetics
    @ReSourceEnergetics 3 роки тому

    True, true, true. The one thing you are missing here (that is needed because of all of the miss information out there), is that you need a relatively tensionless swing (especially loose wrists). If the person is trying to get forward shaft lean and artificially holds lag, they will never compress the ball consistently. If your wrists are loose, your club will go into the ground at impact without trying! This is because as the lead leg straightens near impact, the force of the club goes in the opposite direction (down), but only if you allow it with supple wrists.

    Thank you! I use to try hitting down on the ball to try and take a big divot after the ball. It's very difficult to get your timing just right and just leads to chunking from time to time. After I realized that I actually hit it better trying to pick the ball off the turf my game improved. Picking the ball isn't the answer either, but it's better than hitting down. You explained it perfectly! Keep up the great videos.
