That was one of the best videos I have seen, and having tried to play the game for over 40 years it just proves the adage that you should always check the fundamentals. You really are one of the best coaches out there keep them coming Matt.
I’ve been following you on and off for a while now but I decided to work just with your videos because I was getting myself confused with doing a bit from everyone. My game has improved immensely in the last few weeks and I think that this video is the best so far because it ties everything together! Thanks Matt and keep them coming. 👍 🇬🇧
Your videos on hand placement have been a HUGE help for me. I was always a hands forward guy and couldn’t strike the ball consistently. I saw one of your videos not too long ago about putting my hands more center of my body and my accuracy and distance have greatly improved!! Much thanks for all the info and I look forward to more great instructional videos! Love your channel!!
I shanked several shots around the greens today. To keep the game moving forward I picked up my ball in frustration a few times. I became lost in my thoughts about the golf game. Thanks for a helping hand out of the hole I dug for myself. No need to throw the clubs in the lake. Luckily there are no lakes on the golf course I frequent! While studying the swing I worried about keeping the left side active in the impact zone. So I thought that bringing the hands forward would ensure the left side being active. I’ve learned better since that thought. You’re a straight shooter and I appreciate your advice. It’s hard to keep a long story short, thanks again
When I was a younger golfer I used to have a slight forward press with most of my golf shots. And still do if I find myself, though rarely, in deep rough where I need to dig down to get to the ball. This is a great video. Thank you.
Great instructions! Can't get enough of your videos. Thanks for keeping them coming out so frequently. The minivan analogy cracks me up. Makes so much sense and so silly! Thanks much.
You have done much for my game n love of Golf! The way you teach, with detail n why's and fun! I've become hooked on following you! Must say, your appreciated and dig your humor! Thank You!!
Very informative and keeping it simple. One of your best videos, I will watch it before I go play a round. Didn't realize hands should be center as well when putting. Excellent tips
Probably your best video in a long time and there’s a lot of good ones out there! I would love to see a follow up on ball position combined with distance from the ball... Side note Ben Hogan is sending me a demo 3i and 4i! Had to get them after seeing you crush it!!!! You rock and if you ever want to do a fan course vlog series I’ll happily pay for my flight a hotels!!!!! I know it’s your channel but you seriously have changed my short game... thank you so much thank you 🙏 again again!!!
dude.. I hope you live forever cause that's how long I will watch you. the instruction is priceless and your personality is infectious. please don't ever stop
I'm doing it the Mickelson way (sic...if someone tell's you not to put your hands forward run until you find somebody who knows what the hell they're talking about)...but I have tried it your way and it works too with one exception..it is harder to get consistency.
The gre hat is from Kitzbühls Hahnenkamm Downhill race :) .. they also have a great golf club there where in spring you can still ski in the mountains and then go for a round in the valley
I think I am with the majority. This was a great video which covered the hand positions in all situations and I am definitely going to adopt your methods in the future. Thanks Matt- keep them coming ,This is great instruction.
You are fantastic. I really like the three drills for short game tee shot and green. I would also like you to talk about the middle shot on a 500+ yard hole. First shot driver, now you have some distance to go to green and what the best approach is in the fairway or if you’ve missed the fairway.
Good tips. Can you do one where you make green side bunker shots super easy? I keep thinning shots. Two inches, 3 - 4 behind the ball, etc. - bad results.
Actually I have been doing this midsection set up in recent times with all the clubs in my bag. In conjunction to this I now place my trail hand in Fibonacci hurricane shape spiral and keep it fixed throughout the entire swinging of my club. I start my one piece take away with the slight pushing back with my trail elbow. Placing my hand lightly in a hurricane shape spiral gives my brain the blueprint I want the rest of my body to follow automatically as I swing back and forth my club. I know it sounds crazy and out of the box; but it works!! Cooper Osborn recent videos touches upon this phenomenon on you tube. And it has been studied by a few wise men and women in golf since 2010 so we all are free to test it out and explore this magic found in nature for ourselves. Cheers
Braemar Country Club. Nice! I had wondered where you played- I was thinking So Cal somewhere. COme over to Arizona more! I'd love to tee it up with you! Have you ever played Sedona Golf Resort? If not, you are missing out. It has THE most photographed hole in the Southwest. You gotta see it to believe it. Happy to host you! Mark
Hey "short game", I was having problems in the sand and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I reviewed some of your old videos and found the answer in this video. Bam!... problem solved. Thanks for great instruction.
I mange to play off 7 but there are still things that make me feel uncomfortable. I think this great video may have put the club shaft position problem I have to rest - hopefully :). I keep being told to push the club forward slightly to make it easier to have a flat wrist on the back swing - and this works fine for many many golfers, but for me the swing does not feel as free flowing - I feel as though I am steering it. With this more neutral setup I know I have to concentrate a bit more on my technique to square the club face at impact (due to turn and in-to-out plane, etc), but I would rather work on that than feel horrible on the takeaway and not feel that natural feel you can have by not pushing forward. Anyway, love the videos - they are very refreshing and fun to watch.
You are the man, Mr. short game ! love it ! and Hou about iron short, hand position at address ? I do have all these problems at the set up ! thank you !
This would have been a great video if the camera angle for the chip and bunker shots were turned 180 degrees and we didn't have to look into the shadow of the ball position. Since watching your earlier videos, I moved my hands to my bellybutton position and my ball striking has greatly improved especially going over a bunker to the green.
Amen. Camera vs sun angle is important consideration. Thanks for the great golf tips. You have helped me drop onto the 80's. Now it's just making more putts, dang it!
I struggle with the hands pressure on every shot, i cant find a good Grip feeling. What can i do. ?? The BEST Channel in UA-cam. Congrats. From México City.
very easy to understand, wished all instructor makes it this easy for us, thank you and thank you. If I may, and maybe it's mental, I cannot hit any long iron, 3,4,5,6 but I'm flawless with my 7, 8, 9, P and A, driver is an issue too tend to slice, any in shaft gives me difficulty, any thought instructor as to why I'm having problem with the linger irons and deiver?
one thing that helps me with positioning with the driver, is i setup the exact same way, but i let my driver rest and position in the middle of my stand, like 6 inches away from the ball. i still look at the ball, but my driver isn't forward directly behind the ball. this just helps me, personally, with my take away and fluid followthrough and keeping my shoulders square.
Loved the mastery. I played 9 holes today and kept the butt end of club in the middle and scored 41. Especially when came to chip shot. For driver I sometimes went left, not sure why. Also I’m guessing irons the same by keeping end of club in middle.
Have you heard about de lofting the irons, to compress the ball? Maybe on side hill lies? It helps to think about the driver being just off center. Thanks
Dang it Man!.. how have I not seen this video before!?!.. Man!.. I'm positive that I've been screwing up by having my hands forward.. Thanks for the lesson Matt!
I like almost all of Matt's tips, but for me, I have to keep my hands forward just a little. It just feels natural for me. I have tried keeping them centered and it just did not work. Still some of his other short game tips have been spot on and my short game (
Great video love your stuff! You have probably already have done this but do some side hill, down hill and up hill scenarios. Also do some par 3 where the green elevations are way above the tee box and way below the tee box and go through those scenarios! Thank yo! Love your stuff! Peace out!
Matt, great video - really well-paced, excellent content and very helpful... I live in Hong Kong where the grass around the greens can be pretty "grabby" (or that could be me just making excuses)... Any chance you could do a video on the situation when you come up just short of the green, invariably you have an uphill tight lie or you're in the rough but with not far to hit, I either end up duffing it or hitting it too far...
Based on this I'm definitely way too far forward with a super strong grip. "Centerizing" feels very weird for me. It's been more comfortable for me when I start the shaft in a position that more closely resembles impact. I'll give this a try though.
That was one of the best videos I have seen, and having tried to play the game for over 40 years it just proves the adage that you should always check the fundamentals. You really are one of the best coaches out there keep them coming Matt.

Watched this video last night. Played back 9 this morning. Followed the chipping advice and I chipped in on 17. My first ever 😭. Solid video!
Best golf instructor on youtube, excellent!
When I was a younger golfer I used to have a slight forward press with most of my golf shots. And still do if I find myself, though rarely, in deep rough where I need to dig down to get to the ball. This is a great video. Thank you.
Oh man it’s so simple, my bunker shots improved no end after watching you . 71yr old and still learning thanks mate
Great instructions! Can't get enough of your videos. Thanks for keeping them coming out so frequently. The minivan analogy cracks me up. Makes so much sense and so silly! Thanks much.
Love your energy and enthusiasm Matt. Your chipping tips have helped my game a lot recently. Keep up the good work.
You have done much for my game n love of Golf! The way you teach, with detail n why's and fun! I've become hooked on following you! Must say, your appreciated and dig your humor! Thank You!!
Fantastic tips, thanks very much. Oh, and I've been guilty of that Ferrari look!
Very informative and keeping it simple. One of your best videos, I will watch it before I go play a round. Didn't realize hands should be center as well when putting. Excellent tips
This video has finally given me the confidence to hit chip shots close to the green with your lean towards the target technique. Thank you so much!!
I have watched numerous golf videos but find yours are the best, your instructions and the way you put them across is great, barry C Norfolk uk
Thanks glad you like them.
I changed my hand position from forward to in the center, and now hit the ball closer to the target with less chunks. Thanks!!!
Stumbled upon this video, let me tell you corrected me issues. I was doing the exact thing said not to! This content is a Gem, great work! Thank you
Finding this hand position video is probably the most impactful golf instructional video for me. Immediate results during my latest round. Thank you

Of all the golf videos I’ve watched, this simple video might be one of the most helpful for me.
Matt you are my favorite teacher. Thank you!
I'm doing it the Mickelson way (sic...if someone tell's you not to put your hands forward run until you find somebody who knows what the hell they're talking about)...but I have tried it your way and it works too with one exception..it is harder to get consistency.
Great video. People new to golf or people that have trouble with their short game could learn so much from this video.
Thanks again awesome video I struggle with too forward but I’m going to the range today just to work on hand position. Great video as usual
Thanks Me. Short game, excelent description about proper hand position in the golf game, regards from Colombia
The gre hat is from Kitzbühls Hahnenkamm Downhill race :) .. they also have a great golf club there where in spring you can still ski in the mountains and then go for a round in the valley
Great video simple things to take out on the course with you.
I think I am with the majority. This was a great video which covered the hand positions in all situations and I am definitely going to adopt your methods in the future. Thanks Matt- keep them coming ,This is great instruction.
Matt, Phil recommends hands forward while chipping. He also says front foot or rear. You say?
Love your stuff btw!

Very good advice, hopefully they will work for me tomorrow.
thank you for all your help, i love Golf ..
Yes very good video. This I am struggeling with. Going to use this right away.
Good tips. Can you do one where you make green side bunker shots super easy? I keep thinning shots. Two inches, 3 - 4 behind the ball, etc. - bad results.
I’m 77 & still learning. Great explanations.
Really appreciate your insight and enthusiasm! Keep the videos coming - liked your recent golf club review as well.
This video is great! Hand position is the most important!

Love your tips man ! Really enjoy watching and I’m taking these to the course 👍
Good stuff. Give us more on aim points and how to control distance on short chops. Use different clubs W, 9, GW etc?
Thank you again., I'm taking this to the range, practice, practice t practice.
Well put.. Very informative!!
Absolutely amazing video you make it look so easy just love the vids
This is the best and amazing video for golf swing instruction. Can you make a video to avoid topping the ball. Thanks.
Great video! Thanks Pro, i love it
