Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks Krause and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. I love this one. The colors are so yummy.
Thanks so much, Janet! This is one of my early ones and still a favorite!
the colours are like pastries! yummy.
They are! Thanks so much for watching, Tzvia!
I liked the using white gesso for white so much I've started using black gesso too. I love it, it's matte and not glossy, whuch is fabulous!
Right?! I love that it makes all my paints flat.
You are fantastic with color! You really understand it! Love all your work👍❤️
Thanks, Julie! I really appreciate your comment!!
Julie O I love colours 👏🏻👏🏻😁😁👍🏼👍🏼
This is an eyeopener to me. A bit stuck and now this makes me want to start again. Thank you for sharing the process. It gives energy to a work out person.
You're welcome, Ingrid! So happy it's helpful to you!
Also, i have you playing on my 60 inch tv, and I'm on my phone watching too!!! My husband doesn't "get" the abstract art, so there's some eye rolling going on....but, it's like you're here with us, for xmas eve!!!! Happy Holidays!!!
That is awesome! Love it! Tell your husband I totally understand his eye rolling and I'm okay with it. Not everyone gets my art (or abstract art) and I'm good with that! Merry Christmas!
I love this one - all the blues and pinks!!!
One of my favorites! Thanks, Leslie!
Dont need to hear just to see and enjoy your beautiful art.
Awe...thank you so much, Raye!

You make it look so easy. You're end result is always fields of flowers. I always end up with someone's worst nightmare!
Hahaha....I really doubt that! Keep on playing and practicing. I know you'll get to a point where you're going to be very happy with the end results!
Thank you for watching!

Thanks for this informing video. I was inspired to have a go and ended up with lots of multi coloured square s which is odd as I am definitely a circle person. Enjoyed the process and will keep going. Thanks for the technical details as well.
Fun! Oh well, squares are very close to being circles, right?! Thanks for watching, Rosanne!
Yum!!
Thank you!!
Beautiful Betty!!👏🏻💞
Thank you so much, Daniela!
Beautiful
Thanks for watching, Judith!
So pretty!
Thank you, Elise!
Could you tell me exactly what pencils/mark makers you used at the end? I did have trouble hearing, but I love your videos and am trying to make my own abstracts. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Hi Amy! I had some real issues with the audio on that video, so it's very hard to hear me. I used a variety of mark making tools. You can find them here (they're all at the beginning of this list): www.bettyfranksart.com/my-favorite-art-supplies Thanks so much for watching!

Love it too, Betty!

Thank you so much, Renee!
Is this a modern process of painting or has this method been around for a while? It looks so freeing. ♥
Good question, Lisa. I really don't know if it's been around. It's one that I have developed over the years. I'm sure there are many other artists that have done and that do something similar. I am inspired by Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler.
Love your channel!! 💕 How do you store your paper paintings?
Thank you so much, Claudeen! Thanks for finding me! I don't have many completed pieces that need storing because they sell quickly, however, the ones I have in various stages I just keep stacked up on shelves. Thanks so much for watching!
Really appreciate your generous sharing of your process! I am very interested in your mark making in your initial layers and how that frees you into your painting. What kind of paper are you using and what kind of canvas would be appropriate or can be used for this layering approach?
Jill, I am using Bristol paper in this video with a layer of gesso before starting. I use these same techniques on canvas (only kind) and wood panels. Have fun creating!
💗
Thanks for watching!
Do you mind if I ask what colors of paint your using.
Just beautiful, love your work!!!!
Hi April! I'm using Cadmium Yellow Medium, Indian Yellow, Quinacridone Magenta, Phthalo Turquoise. Nova Color Paints: www.novacolorpaint.com (tell them Betty sent you!)
Thank you for watching!
I love your artwork and videos. Why did you choose bristol paper?
Hi Sheree! I love Bristol paper because it's so smooth! I also use watercolor and mixed media paper. Thanks for watching!
what kind paint are you useing in this video?
Hi, I'm using acrylic paints by www.novacolorpaint.com. Thanks for watching!
@@BettyFranksArt ty I enjoy learning from you
What kind of paper do you use?
I'm using Bristol paper. Thank you for watching!
So beautiful. Can I ask which paper you are using?
Thanks, Pinky! I am using Bristol paper. I also like to use watercolor and mixed media paper. Thanks for watching!
Aelita Andre is my artistic godmother
Aelita is a super talented artist!
@@BettyFranksArt I WILL KNOW YOU PERSONALLY
@@BettyFranksArt YEAH
I like your technique. Is there a way you can zoom in. I'd like to see the markings on the layers showing through.
If we do more recordings, we'll be sure to get close up views. The other episodes in this series have already been filmed, so we're unable to add that in at this time. Thank you for the feedback! You can see my other videos where I show close up views at the end.
I love your work so much and it is inspiring me to pull out my paints! Question: What brand of Bristol paper and what weight are you using? Thank you so much for sharing your process with us! 🌞❤️
Thank you, Laura! Here's a link to my favorite art supplies with info about the Bristol paper I use.
Betty Krause Art thank you! I think I'm missing the link though?

Thank you so much, Raye!
Have you ever incorporated cold wax into your paintings?
I have not tried it yet!
I do like the music you are playing in the background, what is it? Scott👍
Wonderful! The name is at the end of the video: Scott Holmes - Beyond Dreams. It's from a list of free music I was able to use. Thank you for watching, Elizabeth!
No offence meant, but I like how you get yourself out of the first "ugly" stage. That is what I call it concerning my own art. TFS
Yes, that part is always challenging! Sometimes I stay in the stage too long!
Is it possible to paint on photo paper?
I have never tried it. If you do, put down a layer of gesso first or just try it without the gesso. Photo paper usually has a plastic-like coating on it. Let me know how it turns out!
I hear alcohol ink works great on photo paper!
@@queststonesllc8853 Thanks for the info.

Betty Krause Art Hi Betty, I ‘ve been following you and several other artist on U tube...didn’t realize I was on your comment page when I wrote Red Queen...I apologize...I love your work and enjoy listening to your conversation...have watched your videos many times...enjoy your clear honest approach to your work.
@@sarawyant6800 No worries! I didn't take offense to the comment. I've had some really terrible comments made and I try not to let them affect me. Stay well!
I'm new to art journaling and this is my favorite kind of art journaling you can't really do anything wrong. I do have one question due to unable to hear anything that's the only thing I don't like about the video. What kind of crayons did you use. Was it regular Crayola or were they a water soluble type thanks again for sharing and can't wait for your next video sorry I do have one more did you use water color pencil or where they regular coloring pencils that's again
Hi Kitty! I had some technical issues with the sound. If you turn up your volume, you should be able to hear me talking. I used Neocolor II water soluble crayons and prisma color pencils (not water soluble). Thank you for watching!
Loved it, beaitiful! Do you use just water or a medium? Does Gesso always have to be used, or can I directly paint with Acrylic? Loved your video , and look forward to the next one. Thank you!
Lisa, I put down a layer of gesso so that the paint isn't completely absorbed into the paper and it keeps the paper from warping. It's like painting walls...you need to prime them first. I use water primarily. If I want to give some transparency to the paint color, then I add glazing medium. Thank you!!
Is it maybe that the microphone on your device is covered up?
The sound is so low on several of them.
Unfortunately, it was the quality of my microphone. My newer videos sound much better because I got a better microphone. Thanks for watching!
@@BettyFranksArt I am cracking up, because your comment made me actually look at the date of the video!!! Hahahaa!!! Sorry about that!!!
This video popped up on my home page....you know....as things I might like to see.
I'm soooo glad it did! I have subscribed and have spent the last couple days, watching your work! Brilliant!!
I am an artist as well, but have not tapped into my abstract side. I crave it soooo badly. But I have not figured it out yet. Thank you for inspiring and creating and sharing your talent with us!!!
@@jlcollins7673 No worries! Thank you so much for subscribing! I appreciate you checking out all my videos!
If so how do you dry them?
I think you're referring to your previous question about oil pastels. I don't use them. Thanks!
I love your work... and follow you on IG. 💕
Sweet! Thank you for following me!!
Do you use oil pastels for mark making?
Hi Juliana, I don't use oil pastels. I use either water soluble or non-water soluble marking tools. Oil pastels take too long to dry, so I stopped using them. I have no patience, so I prefer marks that dry quickly. Thanks for watching!
With color did youse in this paint please
I wish I knew! I mix colors as I go. I'm sorry, but I didn't make a list of the colors I used for this painting. Thank you so much for watching!
Interesting! Try to get a better sound, I have my sound at the highest and still have problems hearing you.
Hi Cecilia! This one was created years ago and I was having issues with the microphone. Thanks for watching!
The sound is so, so low it is hard to hear anything.
She did mentioned that she was having audio issues.
Hi Mape! Yes, I was having some technical issues, but wanted to post the video because I talk through a lot of my process. I can hear it just fine. You may need to turn up your volume. Thanks for watching!
Bonjour Betty j aimerais savoir si vous donner des cours de pinture j aime beaucoup vos couleurs
Hi Nadya! I have a recorded online workshop available. You can learn more about it here: www.bettyfranksart.com/online-workshops/standard_products/paint-with-betty-live-june-27-2020
Thank you for asking!
The audio is too low.
Yes, I had some technical issues. In my notes above I mentioned that you may need to turn up the volume. Thanks for watching!
ㅍ
Thank you for watching, Amy!
when I try this i end up with mud
That can be frustrating! The best thing to do is to use only warm colors or cool colors. So, for example, start with all warm colors (red, yellow, orange, pink, etc.). After those colors dry, then switch to cool colors (blue, green, purple, etc.). I also use a lot of white. It's when you mix cool and warm colors that you get mud. I hope that helps!
Just lovely but it's REALLY HARD to hear you, and I have my speakers turned all the way up!! xD
I'm listening to it right now and can hear what I'm saying. Check to see if the volume on the video is all the way up in addition to the volume on your device. There's some static in the background (had to buy a new microphone!), but the words are still clear. Thanks for watching!
Hi! Hmmmm...it’s turned all the way up-and the other videos I can hear just fine!!! xD Maybe my computer just has a feud with this particular video haha!! 😊❤️
I'm sorry about that. I don't know why it's not cooperating for you!
can't hear you.
Hi Linda, I was having lots of issues with my microphone. I have since then purchased a new one. And, I no longer use music in the background. I appreciate you watching!
Pourquoi. Le crayon en première
Hi, I like starting with a pencil. It's just the way I like to do it. You can start with anything, but I prefer a pencil. Thanks for watching!
Can not hear your commentary

I had some issues with my audio. Please turn up the volume. Thanks!
No thanks!
Ok!
On a white clean background would look much better the images . Looks too busy, sorry to tell you, need some balance
Thanks for watching!
I can't imagine her style on a white only background.
poor sound
Yes! I mention that in my notes above. I had some technical issues. Thanks for watching!
