Cus wasn't wrong about Tyson he just didn't get the chance to finish the job.We only got to see the prototype,not the full product.It just takes longer with granite than it does with clay.One ? People never ask Teddy and will love to hear his opinion,If Cus would have had more time with Tyson would it had play out differently? Say instead of him passing when Tyson was 21 it would had been when he was 30?
Teddy says when Mike had to rise to the occassion he was missing something or chumped out. What Im wondering is if he needed someone who loves em the way Teddy loves his fighters. That father figure who can tell him he can do it. And I wonder if both of em think about that but can't articulate it.
Great episode. Mr. Atlas, Mike wanted your love and affection at the end of the day you are his Frankenstein. When he said during his podcast with Woodley " I love Teddy, I can't be mad at Teddy" it was obvious to me that Mike misses him.

@Mosaab I hear what you're saying but I think that we're entering a new era. People ARE using UA-cam to have real conversations, there are real teaching moments happening through this medium. Teddy is a great teacher, so I can see him being able to pull it off with regards to a conversation with Mike. I think it could be an incredible thing for people to see.

If Mike had Teddy and Rooney in his corner he would have gone 50-0. It is so sad that honest, real people get separated by circumstances or dishonest people. Teddy, Rooney and ofcourse Cus helped create such an exceptional fighter who SHOULD have gone down as the greatest ever (in the ring). I hope we see Teddy and Mike together on a podcast with Rooney.

You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy, and that's true for Mike and his tough upbringing running with guys in Brownsville. Sooner or later those old contacts would have hooked up with Mike in some capacity and the temptations which brought him undone possibly would have still happened the same way. Everyone loves to blame Don King for Mike's downfall, but we need to be frank here. Mike loved drugs too.

Rooney solely blames Cus for all of Mike's successes. Teddy thinks Mike never won a real fight. Mr pull out a gun every chance he gets guy.

Would you go on mike s podcast and reminisce about how good the old days were when... you remember how mike tried to molest your 11 year old niece? I love mike but teddy obviously is going to be like most moral abiding human
I like that this interviewer knows to ask the questions and sit back in silence and let the guest talk and tease out extra talk by simply staying quiet for a while before asking another question. So many interviewers interrupt at the worst moments and we never get to some of the real meat and potatoes, this one knows how to ask and listen, kudos!
I would love to hear Teddy talk about Tyson’s two fights with Razor Ruddock.
Agreed, those two fights showed Mike had immense heart. They were tough, tough, tough fights.
@@ghostbane47 yes, I agree. Those two really didn't like each other during the build up to their fights. Certainly RR was not intimidated in the least by Mike's supposedly "murderous" aura. But the hug at the end of the 2nd fight said it all. RR took MT to the very edge and back. MT knew that, and RR also knew he was beaten, not by much, but fairly and squarely.

@Hosam Omer I one hundred percent agree with you. I think Kevin Rooney could possibly have gotten Mike through the Buster Douglas fight. A good trainer who is your ace corner man is worth gold. Angelo Dundee got Ali through a couple of fights that he was in trouble in. The first Henry Cooper fight and round five of the first Liston fight. He did the same for Ray Leonard in the first Tommy Hearns fight. An ace trainer/corner man can make all the difference.

Great podcast! Fair, straight forward, with sentiments of forgiveness and recognition. Both Teddy Atlas and Mike Tyson are inextricably bound to this great sport we all love called the "Sweet Science." Boxing history wouldn't be the same without their contributions to its rich memories and the legacy of Cus D'Amato.
I would love to see either Teddy or Mike be a guest on each other's show. That would be INCREDIBLE! Once again, awesome show!
I think the difference is that Teddy still loves, and will always love, boxing. Tyson has said he views the belts he won as worthless garbage. Although, maybe his mooted 'comeback' shows a change of heart.

Teddy finally admitted what I had already known. That night I was so afraid that Spinks would be killed in the ring. No boxer now or in history could have beaten that Mike Tyson that night. For one night he was the greatest of all time and I don't think it would be a contest versus anyone. Also, Teddy properly points out Mike's invincibility factor. He knew that he couldn't be beaten and I think that would apply to anyone past or present.
Come on.im a Tyson nut myself. But while he was my favorite he had style match up like everyone that would give him nightmares. Sadly Lennox probably could have beaten tyson 99 out of 100 prime vs prime.

When Mike Tyson had his head screwed on right there would only be 2-3 people that could possibly beat him. Lennox Lewis was NOT one of those people. Lennox Lewis always came across (IMO) as being cold and aloof, and not very engaging. It's no wonder that England Loved Frank Bruno, and still idolize him.

To see Teddy grow from this & mature so much where now he admits that Mike was right on some occasions when they met & after when they called each other.. it warms my soul so much.. oh what a relief.. I cannot imagine how much relief they both feel about this..
There's so much hate in this world that feels like it will never end.. so witnessing the growth.. the change.. the evolution that Teddy & Mike went thru.. fills up our hope for the future.. it converts & transfers power/energy to us to overcome the challenges we face in our lives.. people's unity is in the unity of the collective consciousness.. not in holding hands or spray painting the peace sign.. when we are all on the same page mentally/spiritually.. that's when we are truly united.. that's when we can overstand that we grow/evolve together in this world
Tyson in the last four years it's easy to tell he misses teddy or at least wants some level of kinship they had before. He was a father figure to a kid without a father. I think Tyson needs it more than Teddy, but hopefully Teddy reads this because a sons' approval in any way from their father is more important to a son than anyone can imagine. Or every son can imagine.

Rooney a brother/trusted friend figure. I'm almost more interested in Rooney and Tyson's relationship. It's not spoken about too too much by Tyson, but what they achieved while together in such a short period. Anyways I'd agree that Cus was literally his father I believe he adopted him? I forget but a Teddy still a father figure imo and that's why he was so disappointed and why Tyson wanted so badly to achieve some sort of closure or mutual affection
@@deadarmd Nah I think Mike just wanted to settle old demons and make amends once he gained more perspective of the situations of his past once he became a Adult. That's all it is just growth. We all have people we want to apologize to people we should apologize to we just not know it yet.

I remember that fight! Spinks was scared from the walkout until he got knocked out! Tyson was in his prime and he mentally beat people before they got in the ring!

Greg Sieracki but there was a reason why he mentally beat them. It goes way beyond the fact that Tyson could punch hard and was ferocious. They knew what it was going to take to beat him and none of them believed they would be good enough, strong enough, quick enough or tough enough to hold him off. So good was Mike in his day that guys knew that to beat him, you’d have to go to hell and then the hell of hell and with Mikes speed, power, skill and intensity, it just wasn’t going to even nearly be enough. Most guys back then had most of the attributes a great boxer needs, TYSON HAD ALL OF THEM AND IN ABUNDANCE, He was one of the most complete fighters the sport has ever known. I would love to know how he would’ve done against Holyfield and Lewis if June 27 1988 Mike Tyson had fought them, not the post prison, hangin with the homies, partying hard for days straight and running your own training sessions with a lack of a voice and dedication to detail Mike. I’m almost certain he knocks them both out in 5 or 6 rounds. My guess is Holyfield would’ve been stopped, just taking too many shots and Lewis would’ve got caught and knocked out cold like against McCall and Rahman. Just my opinion but I know how great Tyson really was..

It’s clear that the rift between the two is extremely deep. They obviously both loved their days with Cus because I think the fact that they ended first for Teddy and then later for Tyson played a big role. That and the fact that it took Teddy 45 minutes to tell a story about two people that involved less than a handful of words exchanged. It’s great that both of these guys who both have it have had very hard hearts are softening them up a little when it comes to each other.
I don't blame Teddy. He was there before Mike, with one of the most will known trainers in Boxing, learning to become a trainer because he had to quit Boxing due to a bad back. Along comes a kid notorious for assaulting and robbing old ladies! Not other dudes his own age, ELDERLY WOMEN.
He's given a great opportunity a million kids would kill for and what does he do with his success? He takes drugs, drinks himself blind, and has to use his money to deal with court & attorney costs FOR RAPE!
Don't blame Teddy for tray. Don't blame Cus for that. Don't even blame Don King for that. Only ONE person has himself to blame and that's Mike. So long as his supposed fans are running around tearing Teddy down for how Mike repaid him, Rooney, and Cus for the opportumitu and effort the 3 of them put into Mike every day of every week of every month FOR YEARS. All so he could shit all over it, *harm other peoples bodies* and minds who AREN'T boxers - his rape victims, the old lady, Teddys kin - as he preyed on the weakest, not the best. But the toughest. Not the strongest. He VICTIMIZED people HE KNEW couldn't fight back so GO FUCK YOURSELF YOU FUCKING COWARD. What else could you be trying to manipulate Atlas into looking like a complete fool just to go kiss Tysons ring?

I too would love to see that happen. I suspect however such an invitation would need to come from Mike towards Teddy, and I reckon Mike's current relationship with the Brazilian chap he's doing all the training with will probably stay in place.

Thank you Teddy and Ken for another awesome episode. I love it how Ken let's Teddy just go on a talking spree. Everything Teddy says sounds and feels genuine. The way Teddy is able to speak with honesty even about his own shortcomings is so refreshing in a day and age where people tend to point fingers and never mention what they did wrong. It would be great to see them talk to each other. As a boxing fan I love both Teddy and Mike and I always hoped they would eventually reconnect.
There was a guy coming up in Buffalo years ago I think he had the potential to be a great heavyweight champion his name was baby Joe Masi if you guys ever get the chance you should do some research on him and maybe do a show about him it would be pretty interesting... He received a brain injury against vasili jirov in a fight he still managed to win. I believe he walked away from boxing with a record of 36 and 0.. anyway just an idea not telling you guys how to run your show just suggesting a topic. Keep it up you guys are awesome.

I heard the Tyson interview you referenced. What Tyson said reminded me of the character Morgan Freeman played in Shawshank Redemption when he was speaking to the parole board. It was like I did something wrong, I know it was wrong and I wish I could go back and tell that foolish kid to just do the right thing. Tyson said he was remorseful for putting Teddy in the position he had. I had the feeling, whatever it was that he did, he carries the guilt with him still.
I dont think so at all. Mike dealt with it the right way so as to grow, change and forgive himself.

Wow. What an incredible interview. I am always amazed at this guy Teddy Atlas. His commitment to being honest with himself first and then with the audience is incredible. His analogies bring much needed comic relief while conveying a real emotion so that you can really “get it”. When he admits to flaws in his own decision making it always comes from a position of strength reflecting an abundance mindset vs one of weakness and a scarcity mindset. He knows and understands that this universe has an abundance of whatever it is you might benefit from. I have nothing but respect for his insights and reflections. This is what a real human being sounds like. We should all take a lesson from Teddy and try to practice this self honesty as much as we can. Kudos to the interviewer who didn’t interrupt or make some silly remark as many do who are insecure and arrogant. Great interview skill number one is let the guest talk and don’t interrupt and this guy has mastered that. Great job, Great channel and great tech skilz.
I respect that teddy told the truth straight up. Mike when he was living and breathing boxing and stayed training year round. He wouldve been a major threat 2 anyone.
Watched Mike Tyson live in Vegas vs Tony Tucker with some friends on Aug 1st, 1987, one day before my 19th birthday. During the match Michael Spinks and his entourage walked right past us and sat just a few rows above where we were sitting. Between rounds the crowd would turn to where Spinks was sitting and taunt him into challenging Tyson for a title bout. Almost a year later that matched happened.
Ironically, James Buster Douglass was on the under card for the Spinks match, and nearly 2-years later "Tokyo" Douglas would accomplish the biggest surprise upset in sports history. Great times to be a young guy and following the fight game.
It's so good to hear Teddy speak about Mike like this. It always broke my heart what happened.
Then, once Robin Givens and Don King got their evil hands on Tyson it was the beginning of the end.
I wish Kevin Rooney got an apology, as well. They were like brothers.

Hi Ken, I really enjoyed this episode, there is one question I never hear mentioned and that is what is Kevin Rooneys position in all of this, ie what is his relationship with Mike & Teddy today.
I always wanted to know that too.. Tyson or Teddy have barely mentioned Rooney in over 20 years. Rooney apparently has dementia now and is in bad health now.

Kevin was asked back to train Mike a few years after the spirit it didn't work out. Rooney was training fighters for a long time, incl vinny paz, Rooney is now needing help with dementia related problems but has support around him
Ive just gained 100* more respect for teddy after watching him for 20+ years. Hes being straight up and i finally understand where hes coming from and where he was coming from with his criticisms.

Teddy does such a great job letting the emotion come through. I can see why he may want to discuss certain topics because he goes "all in" when he does talk about them.

I would love to see Teddy Atlas on Mike's podcast
At the start it didn’t seem like Teddy wanted to say much about his relationship with Tyson. Then an hour later you can’t get him to stop! This is why Teddy is great for radio and tv, i always fall for it too

Man, I will never forget this fight. Watched it live on tv back in the day. It was clear Spinks was nervous making the walk to the ring. Perhaps if he lasted a few rounds he would've gained some confidence but Tyson's camp capitalized.
Art Rust sports journalist of channel 9 NY said on that night, tyson was the greatest of all time who ever put gloves on, No one would have beaten him that night.

Ken and Teddy. We love you guys. I never feel comfortable when Teddy talks about Tyson. While he is not my favorite person Tyson did make the right moves to bury the hatchet but it does not seem Teddy is ready yet. A good question might have been to ask Teddy whether he had any response to Tyson’s attempted overtures of friendship and forgiveness. I bet if Teddy was willing to publicly forgive and respond that Mike would happily join him at his annual diner. I’m sure it would be a great load off his shoulders. No one is getting any younger and I’m sure that there were also happy times they shared as well as still could share in the future. Come on Mr T. Meet Tyson half way and bury the hatchet. People can change and this is a golden opportunity for you both. God bless you Ken and Teddy.

Brilliant show and very honest with a good few laughs. What a fascinating conversation! Asking Mike if he would come to the fundraising dinner was a good step in the right direction Teddy. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Mike can still achieve great things and I believe that you could be a good man for Mike to have in his corner. Somebody with character and integrity. From an Irish fan and an Iron Mike fan.

It would be awesome to see teddy and mike to meet and talk to each other on mike's podcast.
This was very insightful, but it also tells me that Teddy will never get close enough to Tyson to re-build a relationship with him. I think it has to do with 2 things: the incident involved a family member and he's resentful because Cus was a father figure to him as well, and Cus was bending rules specifically for Mike. Ultimately, he kept Mike and fired Teddy. He, in the end, accepted the apology which was good for closure, but also it was time for Teddy to reflect on his own mistakes. I hate how long-winded he is, but love the in-depth stories at the same time.
I don't see the need to explain yourself about a person, you just have to explain how you truly feel Teddy...
Mike had the amazing ability to make good fighters look bad. Spinx was great, stopped Larry Holmes' epic run, was also undefeated until Tyson.
No Holmes had been beaten before Tyson I'm sorry to say
I think the partying was his biggest downfall. You got to love what Mike done for boxing. He is a legend, in his own right. Cus and Teddy are the first people we liknk with Tyson. They turned the man into a fighter, that on his day. Beats anyone. In mu opinion. His younger years he would make any fighter, look slow, powerless. Tactically incapable of beating him. The sheer panic of him coming towards you. respect to you all.
Speaking of apologies.....I have made disparaging and disrespectful comments regarding Mr. Rideout in the past and would like to sincerely thank and honor Mr. Ken's contribution to (my humble opinion) the greatest podcast EVER. Please accept my apology and my knee jerk reaction to the negative and pervasive role of douchebags making money off the backs of real men in the fight game. If you ask Teddy how he feels he will give you an anatomy lesson and discuss all of the inner organs and their functions and at what age they begin to weaken and what role they all play and ......
Teddy I'm begging you to call Tyson and ask him what all this training is about and then propose the undefeated team you guys had come back together. We are dying to see if it can be done and Teddy you are the only man that could have a chance to deliver us greatness again.

Teddy, we all gave credit to that southpaw stance left uppercut hook landing on spinks, and then tyson turning and landing the right hook to the body. We saw it as a marvel of skill all rolled into one, reminiscent of Ali's knockout of Cleveland Williams. Possibly even more impressive than that.

И на данный момент, кроме Кевина Руни, у Майка нет других людей, к которым он чувствует привязанность. Майк, на старости лет, остался фактически один. Потому он ищет контакты с теми людьми, из его счастливого прошлого. Так же я понимаю Тэдди - он ещё не простил Майку то, что тот спустил в унитаз свой талант и те навыки, что в него вложили его учителя - Кас, Тэдди, Кевин, а так же Джимми Джейкобс. Но, не стоит судить Майка за это. Это жизнь, жестокая и суровая. В 20 лет Майк получил мировое признание, огромную славу и безумные деньги. Даже взрослые люди не всегда могут справится со славой, а тут молодой парень, который в своей жизни ничего толком и не видел, кроме тюрьмы и ринга. К тому же его грамотно оккупировал сволочь кинг и семейка Робин. Вот и получилась трагедия, когда отличный талант и природные данные погибли по напором соблазна денег, развлечений, алкоголя и наркотиков. Маленький рост и короткие руки Майка не позволяли ему на равных биться с высокими парнями, ему приходилось максимально тратить силы на бешеную скорость и силу ударов, чтобы достать противника - это хорошо видно на встречах Майка с Тиллисом и Такером. И как только Майк перестал максимально готовиться к боям, даже более того, перестал соблюдать спортивный режим, тут же упала скорость, пропала работа ног, он тупо стоял напротив противника и пытался вырубить его. Против среднего уровня профессионала это ещё проходило, я имею в виду Доннована, который так же не работал ногами, а надеялся на один точный удар. Против Холлифилда это уже не сработало. У Эвандера всё же была классная подготовка, хороший удар, крепкий подбородок, а самое главное - грамотная команда, которая подготовила отличный план, как связать бешеный напор Майка и вымотать его в первых раундах. Можно сколько угодна гадать, а что было бы, если бы Тайсон не попал под влияние Кинга, а остался со своей командой, которая и вылепила из него чемпиона. Но мы никогда об этом не узнаем. Факт один - молодой Тайсон имел почти всё, для того, чтобы стать величайшим тяжем в истории. К сожалению смерть двух самых близких ему людей - Каса и Джимми, предопределила его стремительное падение с той вершины, на которую он взлетел совсем не случайно. Он реально был непобедимым абсолютным чемпионом в 1996-1998 годах.

The only real thing that I don't agree with is when Teddy said that he Mike Tyson was never tested. You got a young man fighting heavy weight. Often much lighter than his opponents and much shorter. He fought and defeated multiple former champions in Their prime. He also defeated former Olympians. All were larger than him. He also went the distance 7 or 8 times. With a record of 50 wins you can't say he hasn't been tested
Mr. Teddy, you absolutely 100% COMPLETELY agree with your decision to put the past in the past. The Good Book, the Man time on Earth is measured by, was all above forgiveness. Especially when it is sincere. That cat (Mike) is today, as genuine as anybody alive today. Good for your brother. That was the man thing to do. And they do not come more manly than the both of y'all!

I appreciate your honesty Teddy, both with your self analysis and your analysis of others. It's good to see. I try to do the same.
Now 3 years after this interview we know Tyson apologised to Teddy. Teddy said he didn't have to accept the apology but his feelings were to accept it & it's done now. They will never be great friends I don't believe. But I do believe in my opinion, the respect is there from both sides. It's a shame what happened but that's life.

First time I heard Teddy keep it real about Mike always understood where he came from about situations withMike but this is the first interview that I really felt he kept it 100 with no animosity or a certain point of view because in other interviews he has kept it a little one-sided and never gave Mike the credit for trying to redeem yourself for a lot and sometimes there is no excuse but being from somebody that's not perfect when Mike apologized and realized a lot of his mistakes he's an inspiration to me and I respect Teddy forgive him that credit 💯
