Ummm, he films from a single angle and offers absolutely no other visual aids at all. His version is excellent no doubt. But some visual aids would have made this a more successful tutorial. Not everyone can just stare at a fretboard and be able to spontaneously call out any and every note on it. It would have been much simpler and more effective if he'd have just put up some tab bars or chord diagrams to accompany what he was saying. Without those the explanation just starts to get too cumbersome.

When these Page pieces are explained correctly like this it shows just how good he was. I would add that Page was also a master of playing volume dynamics such as the build up or reduction in volume of certain sections of strumming. I also like his execution of the damping section near the end.
This lesson was amazing. I’m 8 months into playing. While I can’t play the intro super fast I caught on to the rest just fine thanks to your excellent lesson!
I really only got through to the part where you displayed the tuning on the screen. At that point I started messing around and realized this tuning is practically a cheat code. I'll continue now.
@@venkyn9209 if you mess up and hit an open string inadvertently, it'll go right along with whatever you're doing. It's a bit like a safety net. You can get really wild and aggressive with little chance of hitting a sour note.
Great Job . You make it look so easy. A good teacher makes you see the easiest way of playing such a intricate song. It takes a special ear to figure that song out. I don't think there is a song book with that song in it. I have looked at the Led Zeppelin song books and none have the tab that I could find this song in. And if it is. it's not the correct version. lots of notes were are missing or not the correct way of playing it. Close but no cigar . It has the general form of the song. Like the rythem cords but as for the single notes and leads. They are left out. And the leads are not always correct either. So Thank You for this. I have been dying to learn this song for years Properly. I had it half done right from what I could hear by ear. But now I got it all thanks to you. CHEERS!!! Brilliant Job.
One of my fave Zep tunes! Yeah, Page definitely took the core riffs of this song from Bert Jansch's "Wagoner's Lad." But at the same time he and Plant turned it into a better song than "Wagoner's Lad" ever was. That's the dichotomy of Led Zeppelin-- incredible musicians who weren't always totally honest about where their material came from.
@@augmentedkeys5971 I think it's fair to say that in this case Zep was not guilty of plagiarism, so maybe 'stole' is too strong a word. That's not to say Zep was never guilty of plagiarism. Jake Homes' "Dazed & Confused" is probably the most egregious example. BTW, it's "steal," not "still." ✌
Incredible job, amazing, yada yada ;) . Now for "Black Mountain Side" to cover all of Jimmy's great acoustic instrumentals. Only 2 minutes long! :) And a bid for his self-proclaimed masterpiece, "Achilles Last Stand" (much longer unfortunately).
Check out Bert Jansch's Black Waterside....the original which Jimmy Page copied. I'm sure there are videos on here which will show how it's played too.
Thanks for the awesome lesson. This is the song I use when playing for people for the first time. Make them think you’re a little shaky and start off that very first section a little slow and off beat, and slowly rise into the big bar chords. It’s pretty fun to see how faces light up.
Always wondered if Page just picked a tuning and played around until he found whatever sounded good for chord progressions, etc.…OR…if he had actual music theory in mind when putting the pieces together…anyone know? Brilliant either way.
I don't know but I do know that this song's licks are very common in open and alternate tunings. Check out tony mcmanus and martin simpson. Even Tom Feldman's slide instruction of the old blues guys. You'll hear this here and there. Have fun!
@@CheetahSnowLeopard Could be. When I was a kid who didn't play guitar this seemed crazy hard. So I went off and learned blues, blues fingerpicking, blues slide and then Celtic. Suddenly this isn't that hard and your fingers have already traveled to some of these positions on the fretboard before. Revisiting old friends. And those are the building blocks of the song.
@@ronj9448 True about learning finger style. Mainly wondering about how much theory Page (and many others) knew. Then you have the Steve Morses out there who know theory inside and out.
@Iron Demarten I've seen a lot of interviews with Page and I never saw much of an extensive understanding of theory - or at least he didn't care to talk about it. But you don't have to know theory just like you don't need to know the rules of English to speak well. Page taught himself and he happened to have a fantastic ear and very good taste.

You are a master good sir and I am forever grateful. Best guitar teacher and player on UA-cam!
Jimmy really doesn’t want us to play his music
😂😂😂 said the same exact words 😂😂😂
Yep! LOL! XD
You talk to him?
michael mahoney obv a joke
Honestly I think it’s pretty simple minus the hybrid picking
Thank you much for this great lesson. I really appreciate your teaching ; nothing superfluous and straight to the point. You are gold. Thanks !
I really only got through to the part where you displayed the tuning on the screen. At that point I started messing around and realized this tuning is practically a cheat code.
I'll continue now.
Hey, I was wondering what you meant by "this tuning is a cheat code"? :)
@@venkyn9209 if you mess up and hit an open string inadvertently, it'll go right along with whatever you're doing. It's a bit like a safety net. You can get really wild and aggressive with little chance of hitting a sour note.
CircusMonkeyMafia yeah the songs in the same key, it makes it sound real nice. I noticed that with his Little Martha lesson
It's got to be noted that Wagonner's lad was itself taken from a traditional tune.
Jimmy Page didn't steal anything. He improved upon a traditional piece. "I like that and I do it better." Ha! Btw, it's "stolen" not "stole." :)
BTW, it's "steal," not "still." ✌
Brother, I absolutely love the way you teach. I get it-the way you explain it ❤
Incredible job, amazing, yada yada ;) .
Woah! This has to be the best I’ve ever seen it played! 👏🏻(standing ovation)
Bro you are my hero ❤️thx for this👊🏻
That is absolutely fucking awesome.
Jimmy Page is a guitar genius. 😎
Give this guy his due as well.
He's such a good player.
Thanks for this awesome lesson!....your enthusiasm for this classic is evident i love it........
Intro reminds me of She Talks TO Angels by Black Crowes. Can you do this song as well if you haven't already.
Have fun!
@@ronj9448 Wondering about songs like Rain Song too. Maybe some of the same ideas you're talking about.
That's awesome!
There is a such thing as perfect.
I've been trying to play that song since it came out in early 70s.
Never could get all of it.
You mastered it
Thanks
Awesome
Me and a friend are going to play this at an open Mike this week. Your video has been invaluable. Thank you. Also I have been looking at your Black Mountain Side video which is also both excellent AND educational 😁. Thanks again !
You are an awesome player -but an even more awesome teacher - thank you!!!
hahaha! just finished bron yr aur last week, now you give me another assignment. i hate you mr andy :-)
Man, the tone and sound is fantastic. Really nice playing. Thanks for posting this. Much happiness.
The finest dog we all never knew
You are simply the best music teacher on UA-cam period! Was air-guitaring it through your intro wishing I could play it as well as you.
