+Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials Yeah you're the best out there. Like I wanna learn the song, not some half-assed way other guys on UA-cam play it. Your attention to detail in every lesson does not go unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
I've got to agree John, I play this song a lot and nail it when I'm in good shape. As drummer, I've found few that could play this song like this artist. I wanna jam with this guy. Please come to Seattle, WA.
Many, many guitar players know this tune but you're THE ONLY guitar player I've heard (beside Page himself of course) who captures the feel of the song. Great job.
I started playing this song when I was 15 back in 1977 & I have all but forgot about it when my wife of 30+ yrs heard me listening to this & said you know that's the song you use to warm up with everytime you picked up a guitar & just smiled that she could remember something like this. So in other words thanks for giving me a new found reason to learn it all over again. You F-----g Rock Man!
I can't help but be in awe of the cultural impact you are having by inspiring countless (surely thousands upon thousands) of guitarists, young and old, to reach a bit higher and help spread your love of the songs and music you teach in such an unpretentious and unassuming manner. Good thing we can't see your face as you would probably constantly be thanked at all hours of the day, any place you might happen to be, by your incredibly lucky and grateful students. Hopefully, we are all happy to donate whatever we can...Thanks, man. (Edwin)
Absolutely. I really appreciate the time and effort put into these lessons. As I am senior beginner, and I'm inspired by these presentations. As I am actually learning from them. Shut and Play is probably, in my opinion, the best on YT. I'll help out by buying a TEE.
Finally someone who plays the timing of the intro accurately. This is the best lesson of this song on UA-cam. I've watched over half a dozen of them and half dont have the timing right.
Your attention to detail is incredible! You've shown me the RIGHT way to play songs I've been playing half-ass or just wrong for years. You are my "go to guy" for anything that has to be nailed! Well done!
Whoa, just found this site. DUDE! This is a QUALITY lesson. Not only is the commentary dead straight but the video with the black backdrop and dark shirt, and quality lighting of your axe and hands this is SO easy to see! Stroke of genius man! THANKS so much!
I just wanted to tell you i have been playing for many years and watched many videos of how to play different songs. Yours are the first ones that i can find that play it exactly right every time. Thank you
I appreciate a teacher who puts the lesson before the personality and really shows what I feel is the correct way to play a song. It’s in the details. The black showing just the guitar and fingers is clean and easy to focus on. Also when you turn the guitar to see where your fingers are landing really helps. Thank you for your time, effort and expertise teaching. It is greatly appreciated 🙏🏼
amen!! I heard that part for my first time in headphones the other day and played it over probably 10x... actually made me a little bit teary eyed hahah! page is a god
@@brigs369 this is definitely one of my favorites. Page really sounds like he’s using the guitar to talk/tell a story in a most amazing way. You almost dont need lyrics to know what it’s about.
One night out of the blue I nailed figuring this one out note for note by myself without the recording to listen to, or having heard it in at least a year. I love it when that happens! Just shows how much we focus on Pages playing. Me since age 12 in 1977. Three months later I got my first guitar. 200 bucks for a nice original condition 1964 Gibson LG-0 [zero] All mahogany parlor size acoustic guitar. The absolute perfect instrument for beginners. Sounds more intimate than it's _spruce wood_ counterpart LG-0 guitar (which my mom has had since 1957-58'). Who knows though. My older brother is an accomplished bluegrass flatpicker and began 5-6 years before me on that spruce LG-0. He taught me bluegrass in my first two years, and I gravitated toward baroque styles. The tone of the mahogany parlor size guitar with steel strings is so beautiful, more like you are gypsy with a lute in the forest. So playing anything sophisticated sounds as though it is being written under your fingers for the first time. Great for inspiring every player! I can testify as to the importance of BEGINNING your journey into music with a great instrument! Either LG-0 fits that bill more than a big dreadnought acoustic any day!
Sincerely thanks from my entire heart because you gave me one of my proudest moments. Because of your profound dive into this tutorial I shared an amazing moment with my dad. As a child I recall hearing my dad playing this song. A couple of years back my dad was visiting my/his grand kids and while he was down I played this song, near flawless, as he watched it with amazement and pride. It was my zenith and a goal I never realized I had nor a moment I will ever forget. You're an incredible teacher and your style is unparalleled. Thanks
This song is just some of the proof of why led Zeppelin is so under appreciated. Their complexity is only rivaled by some jazz and classical music. In my opinion they are the greatest band ever and shouldn't be label as metal
Who ever said Led Zeppelin was under appreciated, and how is this song proof of that? Makes no sense. They are rooted in blues (with a sprinkling of folk) and are considered to be one of the best rock & roll bands by pretty much every critic known to man. My 80 year old father even enjoys some of their acoustic music and he detests rock & roll.
OMGWTFLOL im saying theyre underappreciated because people say theyre a metal band which is ridiculous and from their concerts it seems that their average fan doesnt seem to really care about enjoying their music truly
Please forgive the cliche, but I don't have enough words to express just how much I do appreciate the AMAZING work you do here! You are such a wonderful instructor! You had evoked a passion to play the guitar into me with your wonderful lessons! and I'm getting better at it everyday. I mean, time just Stops....I'm on your lessons for hours on end...till I nailed it! ....like I said, not enough words. Again, THANK YOU MAN!
Thanks for focusing on your hands and finger positions - and especially the clear concise instructions. You get right to the point - without the extra ''chatter'' . Appreciated!
Been playing this song for a million years but always felt I was missing a couple of key notes that really bring out (brighten up) a couple of the chords. You nailed this and thanks, now I have it sounding much better. Nice! Thank you so much.
You made me an intermediate player! I like how you flow through your tutorials! If you are a beginner, go to Marty Schwartz's channel, he will slowly show every fret picking pattern, After you get enough down, then comeback to this channel when your ready. He doesn't waste time with "put ring finger on 3rd string fourth fret" he shows his technique but you should already know your chords and scales and your instrument before your ready to learn the way S&P teaches
Right like this is intermediate level not if you're trying to nail it perfectly like teacher here. This is not an intermediate song and I'm about same as you 7 years playing and I can play quite well but this still takes about 3 to 6 days to get down and to weeks to nail it and thats like 1 hour a day on it min.
Fantastic tutorial, I’ve been playing this song every day for a month now, just the first two parts. My fingers are like gnarled twigs with the amount of hammering and pulling I’ve done. I think I’m creeping toward getting it.....hard work doing it a the speed you do it at, and making it look so easy. I WILL get it!!
Thank you for showing others the way to produce tutorials that provide a comfortable "fit" for the majority of players out there, the Intermediate players. We've made it past the Beginner stage many years ago and have climbed as far as our time, ability and desire will take us. Even though I'm a paid professional and have been doing this for over 40 years, I never broke through that self-imposed ceiling as far as my playing goes. You have inspired me to take my playing to the next level even though my venues don't require it. I've been thinking of adding an acoustic set to my shows, so I need to step up my game. I remember staying up all night learning this song when I got the album when it hit the record stores in '73. I've always thought that this song is the most easily recognizable song to learn to play...if it's done properly and thoroughly. And Sir, you've nailed every nuance of the song, as played in a solo performance. I was at a party one night and the girl that lived there handed me her brand new guitar that her parents bought for her birthday and she didn't know how to play. Someone told her that I could play, so I picked it up and played that song. It blew everyone away, including her. Two years later, to the day, we were married and I played that song at our wedding. I've played it ever since for her for 40 years...and she never gets tired of hearing it! You are an excellent teacher, very methodical, fluent, well-spoken, talented, and provide a detailed, well-lit/framed/clothed, time-saving, well-planned and well-structured lesson. I am going to recommend my son learn from your videos. I am new to this. How do I donate? Please continue this marvelous work! You are a true gift for everyone. And thank you again for sharing your gift with us. I'm sure you have thousands of followers and well-wishers. ~ Namaste ~
I really appreciate your channel. I'm 52 and have playing six months. You have a lot of songs I liked when I was young and I'm learning them. Thanks, Jimmy.
One of Zeppelin's and Jimmy Page's best works, IMO. The imagery this song evokes is a lot akin to the scene in The Song Remains The Same where the camera stalks up behind Jimmy Page , sitting outside on a beautiful country day , beside a lagoon....playing a hurdy gurdy (of all instruments - maybe a borrow from Donovan ?). Plant's lyrics describe a playful loving attitude towards a woman of his affection who has taken precedence over all the past loves and lusts. It's distinct in it's opening - setting a feeling , progressing into a "high" of elation, and ending with a sense of being very fond of that person it was written with in mind (i.e. the ending droning notes..). The bridge odd timing begging for a little jig dancing.... I have always loved this song, can you tell? haha....
One of the great things about hearing a great song like this played on the radio and my own sound system hundreds of times, counting is not necessary. If you have the song in your head, you will know the timing. That, I think allows for more feeling and less mechanical rigidity that goes with counting things out. Great vid ... once again. You seem to pick all the best songs to cover.
I've been playing this song since the week after the album came out and I want to thank you for tipping me off on that D flat sixth chord. I can finally sleep at night. Thank-you again.
One of the best lessons on You Tube. The black sweater and black background works perfectly. Small nuances in Page's playing is really appreciated. I have used and watched this video many, many times - thank you.
Loved Zep since I first heard them at the age of 15 (now 59) and love playing Page's acoustic stuff but I do miss out some of the more intricate stuff. Thanks for a tutorial on the pieces I love.
Listening and learning acoustic guitar of JP and Keith Richards in the detail you provide makes me realize why these guys snd bands are a once in a lifetime phenomena.
Thank you for teaching so smoothly and showing awesome music! Humble approach allows learning to happen naturally. Respect your techniques. Your craftmanship is second to none.
I don't know about you guys but every time I listen to this song, I imagine the times the band spent in the Bron, finding themselves and composing this amazing music, thank you for the tutorial :)
Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials I had been using this lesson for a while, then one day when I started playing this at lunch at school and the sub there told me that his dad had a UA-cam channel for playing guitar and he told me the channel name, didn't make the connection until just now, and great job on the lessons btw. Been using this one for a while
Raoul Duke you are so right it's one thing to try to learn this stuff it's another to imagine that he came up with this riff just plugging away brilliance
Your a good guitar teacher. I ve been teaching my granddaughter guitar who is 14 I ve been playing guitar for a very long time. I like her learning your tutorials she is coming along well. Keep up the good work.
I’ve been playing this song for 40 years. It was literally the first song i learned. And it was just today that i realized the riff at 20 minutes is EXACTLY Jane Says
Thanks Daniel. I put a lot of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html

Man, THANK YOU. This is hands-down the most accurate and helpful tutorial out there on this song. Been wanting to learn this one for years and now it's easy. Much appreciated.
just got my new custom Huss & Dalton acoustic and my nephew has asked me to play at his wedding in a month - your lessons are going to help me immensely!! great videos and excellent playing! keep 'em coming!
What an absolute joy this is to listen to and also to learn from! Thanks so very much for this demo of what a great guitarist Jimmy is and what a great tutor you are!
This is the first Zepp song I learned in it's entirety (acoustic parts, anyway) and have been performing it for years and this still helped clear up a few things regarding timing and that little run coming out of the solo. Thank you so much!!
i learned this by ear a long while ago. i always played that part with the Bm6 by holding a Cadd9 then removing my middle finger from the 5th string and moving my first finger to the 5th string second fret then sliding first finger 5th string to the first fret and then sliding down to the 3rd fret. Great lesson. I'm going to play it this way for a while and see how it feels.
thank you so much for this lessons and your lessons generally , if i can i will donate you but im only 16 but you are awesome ! you are the best teacher on youtube i think , kiss from brittania in France ;)
I can't play the guitar; but WHAAAAT A SONG THIS IS! I actually can't get over how enjoyable this is to listen to. Maybe one day I'll play it. If I do I don't know if I'll be able to stop
Dude, I've been trying to figure out what's happening between your 21 second Mark and your 25 second mark, and just couldn't get it. I knew I was close, but not quite there. Seeing that was like entering the pearly gates. I had the rest of the song down. Just didn't quite have the ear to figure that last bit out. Thank you so much for your lessons. You're a legend out here in UA-cam land. God's blessings upon you.
Absolutely agree. I've been struggling with that for 20 plus years, and once you see it demonstrated and then play it yourself, you can't put the guitar down. Such a beautiful sounding chord(s).
This was one of the first songs I began learning, took me like a month of finger pain and hours of playing till I felt somewhat happy with how it sounded.. but in the end I acquired some very useful techniques like the hammer-on, pull-offs, slides and given the tricky rhythm in this song I was also able to get used to following weird patterns. All thanks to the detail in explanation. To be honest a month sounds like a lot at first, but when I started I never thought I could make "over the hills and far away" sound like it did after a month..
I've played Led Zeppelin for years, you'd be fun to play guitar with, one thing I found about the timing tricks was Bonham and Jimmy had a connection,as the song gains and changes timing you'll notice Bohnam plays just a hair ahead of Jimmy, but it was to allow Bonzo to stagger,a jazz truck if you put a meter on it you'll hear it! Other times Jimmy plays in front of Bonzo,it was extremely difficult to dupe these shudders and timing tricks, I was privileged to be produced by Terry Manning he ghost produced much of 4; all of 3 and is credited as the sound engineer! I'm happy to see another JPP guy! Met Jimbo once when my drummer died! thanks ,Larry VINCENT
Watched a lot of these video lessons and compared them the other videos of the the same lesson/song and I gotta say, after hearing yours these other ones don't even compare! The sound is not authentic and true to the original recording as you get here. Keep em coming! Thanks!
The speed up is the best part when you're playing, you can feel the intensity rising and it takes all my will not to start swinging the neck around. Thank You Jimmy Paige, and You Sir. I also love the staccato notes, and the crisp hard alternate strums, I suppose this song is all about not getting too carried away when you play and then get sloppy! OK I'll shut up and play now
You said how this is for intermediate guitarists😂..but I've seen some phenomenal professional guitarists mess this up. Anyway, thanks for teaching these amazing, awesome songs, riffs, tones, and playing. I've learned more from you in 3 months then I've learned in the last 28 years. You're the best I've ever heard and best ive seen.
Thanks for posting...this single song inspired me to want to learn how to play guitar. Friend played it and I thought it sounded so cool so he taught me how. It wasn't easy but I remember practicing a lil everyday. Here I am almost 40 years later still playing and I'm pretty good.
That little lick that changes for the first time when the vocoals come in; when you slide from the G 3rd fret to the D, 7th fret. That's a tricky one. Took me a while to get the timing right. But once you got it, it's so sweet. Nice job on this tune.
new to this guitar well maybe not so new about a year. just came across your video and you are the best so far on you tube between you and 365 and Marty.Thanjs to all you guys for taking time to teach
I always come back to your tutorials as they’re truly the best and most informative that I’ve watched. You sir have helped me complete so many songs I learned early on but never had them quite right. Thank you!!
I noticed that on your strumming, what you show and the way you play it are different. You show down, down, up ,down.......but you play down, up, down, up. Great lesson BTW, very accurate. I'd never be able to learn this song without your efforts.

Thank-you again.
lol.. no doubt =)
Your playing and the audio quality of this video are OUTSTANDING! And the WAY YOU CUT THE REAL SONG IN!!! THAT WAS SICK!
One of the best lessons on You Tube. The black sweater and black background works perfectly. Small nuances in Page's playing is really appreciated. I have used and watched this video many, many times - thank you.
This is probably the one song I want most to learn how to play. Thanks so much for posting this video. Fantastic.
ericarmstrong1 You are welcome! Thanks for watching. cheers
Loved Zep since I first heard them at the age of 15 (now 59) and love playing Page's acoustic stuff but I do miss out some of the more intricate stuff. Thanks for a tutorial on the pieces I love.
John Greenwood You're welcome John.
Incredible talent for teaching! An overlooked skill on UA-cam!

Love your style teaching guitar, relaxing and fun to learn with, as it should be. Thank you for the video.
You are a phenomenal teacher and really appreciate the time and dedication you took to show us all. Looking forward to other tutorials. Thanks again.
I'm so happy that a million people want to learn to play this song, it's my favorite song ever
I'm taking a guitar 101 class and I think this is going to be my first song I really learn to play because it's one of my favorites!
Fantastic lesson, as always. Best guitar instructor on UA-cam ! Hands down!
I don't know about you guys but every time I listen to this song, I imagine the times the band spent in the Bron, finding themselves and composing this amazing music, thank you for the tutorial :)
Finally !! someone who played the little lick that that Jimmy plays live at 15:40. It's been driving me crazy . Many thanks !!

Been using this one for a while
Hey could you please make a tutorial on how to play hey joe by Jimmy hendrix?
Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials
I'm not even a guitarist, and it's incredible how you teach that. Great video.
I grow up listening all this stuff you are a great teacher very accurate and makes everything looks simple thank you
This is the best lesson on this song, bar none! Man this song takes me back in time! Love it!
Raoul Duke you are so right it's one thing to try to learn this stuff it's another to imagine that he came up with this riff just plugging away brilliance
It's a fairly simple piece of music yet it grabs your ear and you just want to keep listening. That's genius.
Great! You're the only one out of 3 I've seen teaching this correctly. You are correct about the timing issue that throws the others off. Thanks!
Your a good guitar teacher. I ve been teaching my granddaughter guitar who is 14 I ve been playing guitar for a very long time. I like her learning your tutorials she is coming along well. Keep up the good work.
First song that was taught to me many years ago . Watching this lesson has helped me improve it .
I’ve been playing this song for 40 years. It was literally the first song i learned. And it was just today that i realized the riff at 20 minutes is EXACTLY Jane Says
I must say. Your teaching of songs on here are by far the best I have seen. And I have learned quit a few from you. Thank you so much.
Thanks Daniel. I put a lot of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html

This guitar sounds so much good that makes justice to the original. Great video, great sound, great tutorial. I play bass but I enjoy this a lot too.
Man, THANK YOU. This is hands-down the most accurate and helpful tutorial out there on this song. Been wanting to learn this one for years and now it's easy. Much appreciated.
I'm just starting to play this song from tabliture. You do a great job explaing the tecniques involved in the playing of this song ! Thanks !
SEEKER8558 Thanks!
Best and most accurate lesson. Also the only one that plays it in time... the timing is so tricky.

jack sonni Hey Jack, thats cool bud. I'm glad the lessons are helping. cheers

What an absolute joy this is to listen to and also to learn from!
Thanks so very much for this demo of what a great guitarist Jimmy is and what a great tutor you are!
Man you sound so great. This lesson has been helping me the most. Thanks for posting it for everyone...
This is the first Zepp song I learned in it's entirety (acoustic parts, anyway) and have been performing it for years and this still helped clear up a few things regarding timing and that little run coming out of the solo. Thank you so much!!
Andrew Klitzing Thanks for the nice comment Andrew. cheers
i learned this by ear a long while ago. i always played that part with the Bm6 by holding a Cadd9 then removing my middle finger from the 5th string and moving my first finger to the 5th string second fret then sliding first finger 5th string to the first fret and then sliding down to the 3rd fret. Great lesson. I'm going to play it this way for a while and see how it feels.
thank you so much for this lessons and your lessons generally , if i can i will donate you but im only 16 but you are awesome ! you are the best teacher on youtube i think , kiss from brittania in France ;)
Perfect. And how this song still gives me the chills.
Best guitar instructor on UA-cam!
Agreed, this by far the best demo of Over The Hills, thanks...I'll just shutupandplay now...
love the preview with out a lot of words to set up the lesson. Thank You!
I can't play the guitar; but WHAAAAT A SONG THIS IS! I actually can't get over how enjoyable this is to listen to. Maybe one day I'll play it. If I do I don't know if I'll be able to stop
You are The Best Guitar teacher I've ever known . Thank you.
You make music seem so easy to learn. Thank you for your videos. More power!!!
One of the best detailed lessons i've seen on you tube ... U Rock bro!!! keep up the great work
such a great tutorial for this song, everyone else seems to rush through the technical parts but not here
This was one of the first songs I began learning, took me like a month of finger pain and hours of playing till I felt somewhat happy with how it sounded.. but in the end I acquired some very useful techniques like the hammer-on, pull-offs, slides and given the tricky rhythm in this song I was also able to get used to following weird patterns. All thanks to the detail in explanation. To be honest a month sounds like a lot at first, but when I started I never thought I could make "over the hills and far away" sound like it did after a month..
Just in awe with your playing. Best details and teaching style available! Cheers Pete
You killed it man. You caught the nuances of Page's playing that brings the richness the complexity. Loved Kashmir too.
OK I'll shut up and play now
One of the best riffs ever written in Musical history
This by far is the best tutorial I have come across for this masterpiece song. Well done sir!
Only the best guitar teacher gets his lessons hit with ads by youtube!! For real. Maybe time to pay up!! All cos your fantastic work Sir!!! Lol
Spot on lesson. Far too many youtubers offering their life stories. I am a learning machine, and need the info NOW! :)
Thanks for posting...this single song inspired me to want to learn how to play guitar. Friend played it and I thought it sounded so cool so he taught me how. It wasn't easy but I remember practicing a lil everyday. Here I am almost 40 years later still playing and I'm pretty good.
Never get on UA-cam to learn the right way to play any song unless u come to this guys videos 👍
That little lick that changes for the first time when the vocoals come in; when you slide from the G 3rd fret to the D, 7th fret. That's a tricky one. Took me a while to get the timing right. But once you got it, it's so sweet. Nice job on this tune.
GaryJB Thanks a lot Gary! Yeah I know that part you're talking about, once you get it down it sounds really great! Thanks for watching bro. cheers
This is probably the best song tutorial for guitar I have seen on youtube. Great job man you are a great teacher!
leslie147851 Thanks Leslie!
Wow, this really is the best tutorial of this song. You don’t miss anything! The timing clues here are key. Thank you!
new to this guitar well maybe not so new about a year. just came across your video and you are the best so far on you tube between you and 365 and Marty.Thanjs to all you guys for taking time to teach
I always come back to your tutorials as they’re truly the best and most informative that I’ve watched. You sir have helped me complete so many songs I learned early on but never had them quite right. Thank you!!
Lovin your videos...playing guitar for years and a few things couldnt get my head around until I found your vids...your a great teacher..
I noticed that on your strumming, what you show and the way you play it are different. You show down, down, up ,down.......but you play down, up, down, up. Great lesson BTW, very accurate. I'd never be able to learn this song without your efforts.
good stuff been stumbling through this for decades and now I'll actually get it right. thanks
