How can a human being be that tall + that fast + that agile + that strong + that coordinated + that amount of stamina all combined into one? Then consider he was on the regimens known at that time. Give Wilt today's training, nutrition, and "supplements" and it would make a monster that topped the limit of a human's physical ceiling.
@@showofhands8214 That is an understated part of it. I grew up in a rural area and there is no comparison between a chicken in 1971 and 2021. More nutrition was in the food Wilt ate versus the food Lebron James eats from some over farmed organic outfit.
Imagine Wilt with modern medicine, nutrition, sports training, and basketball techniques & knowledge. We might've seen the highest level any basketball player could ever be, the echelon of basketball in just one player.

Then saw Wilt a few years later, he was playing volleyball at Santa Monica Beach and I watched for 45 min nobody could return his spikes and nobody even tried, then the ball rolled over to me out of bounds and I passed it to Wilt, I can actually say I passed a ball to Wilt Chamberlain! The scary thing about Wilt is that in spite of his completely impossible stats, he didn't play like a guy as big and strong as he was. He intentionally played a finesse game so people couldn't just discount him as a brute. Bill Russell believed that he was the only one that truly knew how good Wilt was because Wilt tried harder against him than anyone else.
If Wilt had taken it to the hole like Shaq every time, then half the guys in the league would go out to injury. We're lucky he was so nice. He had the good sense to know that shooting fade away jumpers and rebounding everything was healthier for the overall league. Remember, this was the same guy who broke a guy's arm and dislocated Gus Johnson's shoulder from a 100% Ball block. Wilt got his hand on the ball, Gus stopped going up, hit the floor and bounced dislocating his arm. Gus was the same size and weight as Charles Barkley when he was in shape.
I was there at Boston Garden for many of the clashes between Russell and Chamberlain. Both were unbelievably athletic. Chamberlain was stronger but Russell was faster and had even better hops.
I think to add perspective Wilt said that Bill allowed him to play off of finnese whereas other big gius might would foul and playy over aggressive. In todays game wilt would be able to use aggression to get fouls and 1s etc. And therefore be more dominant like shaq.
I was born in 1976. My father was born in 1943. All he talked about no matter who we were watching play in the 1980s until his passing in 2001 was Wilt, Bill Russell, Kareem, Moses Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon. Oscar Robertson “The Big O” was the only “small” who my father talked nonstop about. When Shaq entered the league I’d tell him none of those bigs could do anything with Shaq and my pops would lose it. My mother got so tired of us debating Wilt v Shaq. When Shaq lost to Hakeem in 1995 my pops was on an “I told you so” campaign, grinning and laughing at me and the tv the entire series and I was 18 and cluelessly shocked…😂. I was supposed to play volleyball with him one day in Santa Monica but he decided to call it quits after the game before ours. Still, sitting there watching him play was such treat.
Wilt was Superhuman, he was also super nice. He was very conscientious of his strength on the Basketball court not to hurt other players. In 1972, Lakers against the Knicks, Wilt went up close to the basket for the slam, Willis Reed jumped up to block it, and Wilt let off and put it in gently. He could have snaped Willis's arm off, no one could stop him. He has been my Hero ever since, that and the 100-point game. RIP Wilt!

He’s an all time great but let’s be real. His offensive game is long gone in today’s NBA. Saying he could adapt is a big “what if” question which could be applied to anyone else. All we know for sure is that today’s players would dominate older generations, because of their superior athleticism and skill. Athletes and their sports evolve over time, it’s unlikely a player from past generations would “dominate” today’s NBA.

@Cody Lockwood Not many fouls? Offensive fouls were touch fouls in Wilt's day. Compare that to what Shaq's era and since get away with. The rules then were way more strict not just on fouls but for ball handling too. Today's dribbling rules let todays players get away with far more than in Wilt's era. All todays cross overs would have been traveling or carrying the ball then. And the step back shots today that Harden, Luka, and everybody else uses would have been called traveling then for sure. As far as easier, that's laughable. Somebody dunk on one of huge centers in that era and next time into the paint they'd be knocked on their ass. With shoes on like they measured everybody after '73, the best centers then were 6'11" and up and most were strong athletic African Americans like Wilt, Russell, Bellamy, Nate Thurmond, etc... This is what he did in high school at 7'1": As an avid track and field athlete, Chamberlain high jumped 6 feet, 6 inches, ran the 440 yards in 49.0 seconds and the 880 yards in 1:58.3, put the shot 53 feet, 4 inches, and long jumped 22 feet. (All recorded times and other statistics) At the University of Kansas this is what he did: He ran the 100-yard dash in 10.9 seconds, shot-putted 56 feet, triple jumped more than 50 feet, and won the high jump in the Big Eight Conference track and field championships three straight years. Everything else is conjecture or statements he made or made about him.
6'6 was the qualifying height for the 1960 Olympics, so Wilt would have gotten to that, however, it would not be nearly enough to win a medal. Still incredible for a man 7;1
These times and distances are dubious at best. They came from an interview Wilt did as a freshman at U Kansas and were all self-reported. If he had done even some of those things, he'd have been nationally ranked and he would have been city champion in Philadelphia. He was only very elite in the high jump. In an interview a few years before his death, Wilt went even further, claiming he could run 100 yards in 9.4 or 9.5 and run the 100 meters in 10.2/10.3. That is world class level even today. That's good for sure man, keep it up. That's very impressive for any age, and definitely for a man in his 50s. I'm nearing 40 with a 34 inch vertical myself. Able to get my hand over the rim at 5 8, but I haven't been able to dunk a basketball. Hands aren't big enough to palm it. I have dunked a tennis ball and a soccer ball lol. Im sure if I work hard enough Ill get there. Im basically where my vertical was at 16, but I didn't train legs at 16, and in my 20s I drank tons and tons of alcohol and abused my body instead of working out, but was able to get it all back in my 30s.
@Wilt Chamberlain Didn't pick up on him until 1960. From that point on the Warriors and the Celtics were on TV nearly every Sunday so got to see a lot of him.
@David Mutchler They could be whatever he wanted them to be. With the relaxed rules on offensive fouls, the inability of the defense to hand check, and with the defenders more spread out to defend against the 3point shot, he'd be able to score every time down the court if that's what his coach wanted. But numbers would be generally down because there are about 20 less possessions per team in today's game vs. the 60's.
@David Mutchler Again, much would depend on what the coach wanted him to do. When he was with the Warriors they wanted him to score. When he came to the 76rs they had a solid team so he was asked to focus on defense and rebounding. If they wanted him to score it would be a function of how many possessions his team got. As I said earlier, with the rules of today and the 3point line, he could average 40 easily.
This dude was an absolute BEAST... holy crap! Fast, athletic, excelled at multiple sports, just defied logic how a man of his size could be that damn good!
@@KQwest98 Wilt was skinny in the very very beginning. Go look at video. And the point was that in THIS video at 60 years old he's making Shaq look little.
I think there are some exaggerations involved in the stories of him. However, a lot of his crazy accomplishments and physical abilities are documented, so even the ones which aren't documented sound at least plausible, or at least close to the truth.
Because over half of what was claimed about Wilt is simply untrue. He had a standing reach of 9’6 and claimed to struggle to dunk on A 12 foot rim. If he had a 50 inch vertical, and a 9’6 reach, he’d be able to touch 13’8… which, by all means, wouldn’t be a tough dunk on a 12’ rim. Highest recorded vertical in game was 35” and his head was never over the basket without obscure camera angles. Wilt is one of the best athletes of all time. Maybe he had a 40” vertical in his prime, but 50 isn’t a possibility and he acknowledged it.
@@shaneking9084 the pic at 0:39 doesn't seem like an obscure angle to me. It's taken far enough away from the action that the rim is barely facing upwards.
@@seinfan9 Even then it isn't a 50" vert. Jordan we know for a fact had a 48" vert and that puts his head 6 inches over the rim at 6'6" or about eye level. Wilton was well read, well traveled, cosmopolitan, quite an intellect. Before the Cavaliers, the Cincinnati Royals played some trial NBA regular season games at the old Cleveland Arena. The Lakers came with Chamberlain, Baylor, and West. At 13, I beseeched my dad for tickets. Wilt had 60, and I got so see him very up close.
That was just a look of pure annoyance, because Wilt pulled out that ridiculous old man's handshake, which is really just a blatant attempt to pull another person off balance to assert dominance -- *not* a genuine, respectful, 'hi, nice to meet you' type of handshake. He tried to assert dominance over Shaq on live TV like a proper a**hole, instead of just meeting him, respectfully, like a normal, well adjusted human being. Shaq knows he is and was strong, and if he'd approached Wilt with the same disrespectful attitude, that day, old man wouldn't have been throwing the toss up that night because he'd have been carted off the floor in an ambulance. Get real.
This video changed my mind I can't lie, wilt would no doubt dominate in today's league. Even without the advancement of technology his workout method plus natural athleticism Is wild

That is amazing that someone as ridiculously tall as him could triple jump 50 feet and run a sub-2:00 half mile in addition to his incredible basketball skills!
And his endurance too... A lot of people just can't believe that the NBA hasn't had a more athletic big man since then. It does seem kind-of weird, given that basketball has only become more popular, and that the NBA is effectively recruiting from a larger talent pool now.

Bill Russell believed that he was the only one that truly knew how good Wilt was because Wilt tried harder against him than anyone else.
If Wilt had taken it to the hole like Shaq every time, then half the guys in the league would go out to injury. We're lucky he was so nice.

This video changed my mind I can't lie, wilt would no doubt dominate in today's league. Even without the advancement of technology his workout method plus natural athleticism Is wild
I have been trying to tell you young folks, but you all think that we were making this stuff up. We were there to see it, just like Arnold!
Same for me bro..Like I understood Wilt was amazing and all, but not to the level that my mouth stayed open the entire video...His athleticism and flexibility is supreme for the ages, and this is the 60s bro
People don’t realize ,especially in my generation, how much an athlete he was
That is amazing that someone as ridiculously tall as him could triple jump 50 feet and run a sub-2:00 half mile in addition to his incredible basketball skills!
And his endurance too... A lot of people just can't believe that the NBA hasn't had a more athletic big man since then. It does seem kind-of weird, given that basketball has only become more popular, and that the NBA is effectively recruiting from a larger talent pool now.
Then put the shot!
One of the best ATHLETES of all time
