The Hash Pipe Conspiracy

- After Pinkerton underperformed, Weezer reshaped their image and sound with the Green Album. Of singles like Island in the Sun and Photograph, no song illustrated this change better than their first single, Hash Pipe. But, a small issue popped up. Nobody knew the real lyrics. Rivers Cuomo played coy, and left us to pick up the pieces. What are Hash Pipe's lyrics?

If it's "ass wipe" because the song is about shitting, it's "big cheese" because rivers is lactose intolerant.
Omg that makes so much sense
The grass is always greener where the dogs are shitting.
this made me laugh more then i should have. was not expecting that bit about lactose intolerance at all but as someone who has it that just about explains the entire song
Asswipe was used on the radio edit. Hashpipe is used on the unedited album. Sorry to ruin everyone’s imaginations

"pump it up into me please daddy" - rivers cuomo
I read an interview with NPR in 2009 about how Rivers wrote this song and it's so funny. He mentioned " in mid-2000, somehow my experiments evolved to a point where step one was take a pill of Ritalin. Step two was take three shots of tequila.Step three was go out in the backyard, sit down on a chair. Step four was close your eyes and imagine the song. And thats how I wrote Hash Pipe"
Sounds like 5-year olds version of getting wasted.
He wrote Dope Nose the same night too
@@ludrixte1938 Thats rivers, alright.
@@ludrixte1938sounds like a fun way of feeling good without getting too blasted
I used to take opiates instead of ritalin for my writing process.
“These lyrics make the most sense!”- he said about a song written by a man on tons of Ritalin and three shots of tequila in an hour. Honestly it could be “ice wine” for all I know.
I got my hast white
both mean the same, somehow. if those players come with their problems for that behind they like, no matter your trick, both eyes wide and asswipes will be needed. really hope there's no kids involved.
real fans know its ass wipe, this shit still hilarious tho
"The eyes widen to come to a conclusion"
dude my dad's band covers this song and he's the singer, he's been telling me this song is about gay sex for fucking years, this 100% validates him.
"Ass wide" makes the most sense based on the other lyrics of the song. I thought I remember reading an interview with Rivers way back in the day where he said he passed the lyrics off as "eye swipe" to get it past the record company but "ass wide" were the real lyrics.
Ok, so there's one VERY important piece of info to be brought up as the the confusion over ass wide vs ass wipe. The video version is an edit of the album version. In the video version, you never hear the two bars of the downstroked G chord (also maybe a little clever music nerd joke) at the very end of the chorus. It just cuts that part out completely. You will find that the video version clocks in just under 3 minutes, but the album version is just over 3 minutes.
So what happens in the video version (possibly the radio edit) is that the line "I got my ass wide" gets cut in the first half of the word "wide" sounding like "why".
That cut gets stiched over the word "Hash Pipe" in the album version chorus, with just the plosive sound of the "p" making it into the edit.
Stitch that together and it sounds like "wipe".
Based on the fact the record label wasnt a huge fan of releasing a song called hash pipe as a single (it was 2001), it makes sense why they cut out the title from the song as much as they did, and to be honest I kind of like it more with out that really aggro hammer down on the "Hash Pipe" repeat in the chorus on the album version.
Anyway, this is one of my fav Weezer tracks and I've definitely needed out too much with a silly pop song.
Weezer is far from the first band to intentionally obscure their lyrics. It doesn't take away nor add to the band's resiliency.
Cool story bro.
Oh no... I guess he should remove this video now /s
I fucking love that he compared Weezer lyrics to Chernobyl.
Considering Rivers’ history of intentionally messing with fans and the fact that there’s another song on the album that has some lyrics that sound very sexual (chorus of Smile) but are apparently different words, I think that this is intentional. In Smile, it seems like they deliberately made the lyrics that way, since the actual words don’t make any sense. So either both songs are about gay sex and they’ve been disguising them, or Rivers is intentionally making the lyrics not clearly distinguishable and seeing what people come up with. If it’s the latter, they probably didn’t release the lyrics for Hash Pipe because there isn’t really specific words that he’s saying.
well after "Where's my sex" you clearly are warned Rivers like to play with misheard lyrics
Theory: He said nothing. He made the sounds "ahs why" and hard stopped the last vowel without making an actual consonant sound, leaving it entirely up to everyone else to try to decide what he was saying.
@@arandomsupra This. Most musicians like the listener to form their own interpretations of a song. The benefits of such to the artist are obvious: when listeners are interpreting it themselves, they have a more personal connection to the music which is an obvious benefit to the band. What better way encourage that than to be intentionally unclear?
There's almost no doubt to me that the real lyric to Smile isn't "fine face sucking dick" - I've listened closely to it so many times and I just can't hear "i can't take." To me it sounds like an intentional blending of the two lyrics.
@@zachperkins688 I think that the lyric is supposed to be sucking dick but they said it's i cant take to avoid backlash and explicit tag issues. to me, I can kind of hear I cant take, and I think he intentionally said it kind of weird just like he says the hash pipe lyric weird.
As a non-native English speaker, the lyrics always puzzled me as a kid, and now I have two of my favorite songs talking about buttsex without ever knowing it, thx, the internet (The other one is Stinkfist by Tool if you're wondering)

@@Kodabot That'd be awesome.
I never looked so deep into this song to learn that it could possibly be about gay sex
I think the line might be "big cheese" in reference to a Nirvana song called Big Cheese. We know Weezer (or at least Rivers) like Nirvana, considering they played a whole Nirvana cover show as Goat Punishment
fun fact actually, on amazon music it's confirmed as ass wide in the lyrics of it. of course that's like not the most viable piece of evidence, but interesting nonetheless
On spotify it’s eyes wide though
When you watch live performances of the song, they make it clear that they’re saying EYES WIDE.
100 % " eyes wide"
After watched this vid, I changed my perspective about the lyric.
can’t believe there was no mention of the fringe “i’ve got my hash pipe” theory, popular with fans of occam’s razor and virginity.
This whole conversation about "eyes wide/ass wide" exists because Rivers actually says the both. But this change is on the chorus, so the lyrics sites are confused about it. Some lyrics sites are very bad about changes like this. Because of this, I only trust Genius and sometimes Musixmatch for lyrics.
i honestly always thought the "eyes wide" was just a misspoken "hash pipe" like a lot of rock singers do. they alter the pronunciation. i mean listen to nirvana lol
i choose to believe it’s “ass wipe” because on certain setups you can really clearly hear the plosive
This may not hold much weight, but I used to karaoke this song in the mid 2000s and the teleprompter showed ass wipe, big cheese, and kick me. I did not make any lyrics up as I had to follow along with what was on the screen.
He clearly says "eyes wide" the first time & "ass wipe" the second time.
He clears his throat after the verse where he changes it.
I put this in my “actual quality videos” playlist
I find the Google results for lyrics to be frequently wrong, even for uncontested cases.
I remember thinking about this before. I settled on "ass wide", being the funniest interpretation because I couldn't hear half of the lyrics anyway
If I remember correctly, the Hal Leonard guitar tablature book for the green album lists the lyric as "eye swipe."
Hardly controversial, but a fun fact: The first line was lifted from The Beatles' "You Can't Do That".
I changed my mind after listening the song very carefully. Definitely, it's " eyes wide"
Interestingly, when this song was performed on UK Top of the Pops the title, and lyrics, were changed to "Half Pipe"
that's because MTV wouldn't air the video and forced the band to redo the lyrics for the video/change the name to Half Pipe (Much Music however kept the uncensored video/lyrics)
D'ya know what, you just randomly unlocked a good ol' English TV memory. You're totally right!
In the context of the song, both ass wide and eyes wide work. Ass wide seems to appear in the green album version and live shows from that time while eyes wide seems to be a newer thing
I remember the radio edited version said, "I've got my half pipe."
Not sure how I found this channel, but ive watched all the small back catalogue and now I cant wait for more
It's "big cheese" because Rivers Cuomo is Kurt Cobain
😱😱😱😱
This is an insanely good video, please make more videos.
Edit: Spelled videos wrong
I believe it's "big cheese" because as everyone knows, Rivers Cuomo is actually Kurt Cobain and the second to last track of Nirvana's debut album "Bleach" is Big Cheese, therefore nullifying any claims that the lyric was indeed "Big G's"
I know you're joking, but I came here to post about this same relationship. Rivers reported around this time he was obsessed with Nirvana and made spreadsheets about their songs. I think it's perfectly plausible that "big cheese" is in here partly to pay homage to Kurt Cobain and to tip off listeners that the lyrics are intentionally ambivalently pronounced.
He’s definitely saying big g’s because remember we had to retroactively change which weezer member is Kurt cobain, the leading theory is it’s now Brian bell
@@absentmindedaerospace3967my guy it’s big g’s
This is an incredible video.
Has anyone looked at a Japanese copy of the CD? I believe there was a requirement for official lyrics to be included with albums at the time. English language albums often included then as a second booklet in addition to the main one.
dude these videos are sick, really well made.
"Asswipe" is the only true explanation. It's a dismissal of the problems the other person has as being inconsequential enough to wipe one's ass with.
Congrats Marc, 14k views under a week, damn, you're going to reach the third digit in your next videos no time.
My other favorite lyric from this album is “grab at the bootie, taint gonna do no good…”
I remember clearly watching mtv with closed captions on back in the day, and they definitely said “ass wipe”
I love this video, everything from the editing to you sense of humor. In my opinion is " eyes wide"
On a message board in 2001 someone suggested it was "ice white" and for some reason my brain ran with that even though it makes less sense than any of the proposed ones in the video.
The way he sings the opening line to this song always reminded me of the way Lita Ford sang the opening to Kiss Me Deadly.
I remember watching an episode of Cow and Chicken years and years ago and there was this tribe of people they met who called themselves the "Azz-weep-ays." Ass-wi-pes.
This came up in my feed and I had to click because I had no idea what this could be. Incredible content, I've already started sending it to other people.

Wtf I was looking at a guitar tab for Hash Pipe, I go on UA-cam and bam this is the first thing on my recommended. Spooky
Ass wide makes the most sense, but I think if you asked Rivers he probably wouldn't even respond just to mess with you (and also he wrote the song when he was on Ritalin and Tequila so the memory of what went through his mind is probably hazy)
I had no idea this was even a thing, I'd always heard it as "ass wipe" and "kick me" (and "big jeans" but that's neither here nor there). Very interesting analysis! Nice job!
And additionally, I had already been scripting videos for musical analysis before but this is certainly a new inspiration. Very cleanly edited and well paced. Nice job, again!
The song's about Kevin Smith
woa big jeans for those legs that men like… that makes sense!
I always heard big jeans-
Replacing an "I" sound like the one in "eyes" with an "A" sound is actually very common. It's most obvious in people from New York (see: any song by Vampire Weekend), but it's a very widespread way to have nicer sounding vowels.
Considering that I sometimes mutilate "about a..." to "a ba-da-...", as a New Yorker... makes sense to me 😜
I need more content like this, great video
I'm interested in you as a general content creator, not just Weezer. Looking forward to more
My favorite artist back 5ish years ago was Bleachers and I know for a fact he's changed his lyrics over time. Even on his latest album there's few things he says differently depending on recording. So yeah I'd imagine most bands just keep it vague and over time it grows confusing
Green Album came out when I was in grade 12, was the sound of the summer, we played it over a military parade square PA system a lot at Sea Cadet Summer Camp, people doing survival in the woods on the other side of the base could hear it LOL, Base Commander liked it so we got a pass :)
I honestly think the "big cheese" lyric was "dick cheese" on the earlier demos, and then changed for the album version. Same on "Dope Nose" when we says "Flag of the year, that could beat up your man". On the demos, he says "Fag of the Year, that could beat up your man." which obviously makes way more sense, but is less PC.
Worth mentioning but it wasn't "flag of the year" until later. The lyric sheet for my original copy of Maladroit has the original word intact and Rivers is definitely dropping the british term for a ciggy on the song.
I’m not even all that into Weezer, but I still binged all your videos in your channel! Hood shit 👍
I love this. Always sounded like ass wipe to me. Hearing the slowed down version, the first sounds like ass wipe and the second sounds a bit more like ass wide.
An important consideration is that ass wipe rhymes with hash pipe way more than eyes wide does
That's funny cause I'm hearing "ass wide" the first time and "ass wipe" the second time. Ha!
wait how does this channel only have 400 subs???- the editing and transitions are actually so clear cut

He doesn’t sing, “You’ve got your big cheese,” nor, “You’ve got your big G’s.” He sings: “You’ve got your Head Cheese.” See, whomever he’s singing to, loves to eat the most disgusting cold cuts ever imagined.
A masterpiece.
Weezer is and always will be an amazing band and hash pipe is a very cool and fun song.
Been a Weezer fan since the mid-90s, and have been rediscovering them recently. I had no idea they would have recorded a Sci-Fi rock opera instead of Pinkerton. I like "Pinkerton" but LOVE "Songs from the Black Hole", its weirdness, warts, lore, and all. It has some cringe issues today, and maybe that was part of why it didn't release. Anyway, I feel like "You Won't Get With Me Tonight" would have made a great first single to lead off the album because it slaps. It's better than "el Scorcho" and I loved that song back in the 90s but doesn't 'slap'.
So I'm hoping you do an episode on "Songs from the Black Hole" soon. It's their great lost masterpiece.
Oh, and I always just assumed it was 'Ass Wipe', and they slipped it in and got away with it. It makes more sense to be either 'Eyes Wide' or 'Ass Wide' actually.
I recently heard the fan recreation of " Songs From the Black Hole" and was severely disappointed.
@@cultreader9751 I listened to one of them don't remember which one. While it wasn't original it wasn't too bad.

Regarding “Big Cheese”, Rivers is a huge Nirvana fan. That lyric is a reference to the song off Bleach called Big Cheese. It’s like saying, “you got your [authority figure]”.
see i was thinking biggie cheese from Back at the Barnyard but with the same concept of “you got your [authority figure]”
I always thought it was "big cheese" in the sense that he was using slang for money like "cheddar" since that term was being used in rap around that time.

I never thought I could sit through 9 minutes of Weezer as a topic, but this was riveting, lol

This is REALLY well done
Clearly the words are "house wife", especially the second one in the "under glass" version. You don't hear the annuciated "d" or "p" because it's an "f", which has a much softer sound that fades into the music easier. The meaning has always made sense to me. It's about famous people (like Eddie Murphy) picking up tranny hookers and getting into a lot of public trouble because of it. ("You got your problems.") People that are famous have a lot more at stake when something like that happens to them. They have to face their boss, which includes in large part, their fans. ("You got your big cheese.") Meanwhile, Rivers is singing from the perspective of a super chill, laid back fan, which is just a normal guy that sits at home with his housewife and smokes weed. A simple life with simple problems compared to someone famous. Perhaps Rivers is actually singing to himself when he says "you", since he is actually famous himself.
Interesting use of the Chris Vrenna remixes to hear clearer vocals. I thought you were gonna go the simple "isolated vocal track ripped from Rock Band 3" route that every other misheard lyric video uses. This is like the closest we'll get to official Hash Pipe lyric confirmation, so speaking on behalf of every trashy garage rock cover band out there: thank you for your service.
Going for the vocals stem from Rock Band is even more official than using a remix.
