  • Here's an in-depth how-to video with everything you need to know about European nymphing otherwise known as Euro nymphing in fly fishing! We're answering all your questions about this tight-line nymphing technique so you can catch trout year round. It’s one of the easiest ways to catch trout while fly fishing! Learn essential tips for euro nymphing including how to set up a euro nymphing rig, the best euro nymphing fly rods, why you should use a euro fly leader, the best European nymph flies, and much more.

    One thing we forgot to mention was how to add a dropper to your European nymphing rig. The strongest and easiest knot to use is the Orvis Tippet knot, which can be used to add a dropper tag into your fly leader or by adding a brand new section to the end.
    Here's a great article we wrote covering everything else including sizes for each fly: theflycrate.com/how-to-fly-fi...
    What You'll Learn:
    0:11 What is Euro nymphing? What makes euro nymphing different from other types of nymphing techniques?
    0:56 Here’s how to set up a euro nymphing rig with 1 or 2 flies using an Orvis Tippet Knot as the dropper tag.
    4:04 How to use nymphs like split shot.
    5:10 When should I use more than one fly?
    5:50 Why use a Euro fly leader?
    7:29 How to euro nymph. Here’s a quick demonstration on how to euro nymph and tight-line nymph.
    10:49 Why are euro fly rods so long?
    What do you need to Euro nymph? I forgot to mention fly line, fly leader, and reel. Fly reels are just there to hold your fly line so you can use any reel of your choice. Just match the fly reel ‘weight’ to the ‘weight’ of the rod.
    You can use your standard 9-foot tapered fly leader and attach some colored yarn or backing material several feet above your flies. This will act as a sliding hi-vis indicator as you tight-line nymph. In addition, your fly line will rarely be used so you can use whatever ‘nymphing’ made fly line just in case you want to go from euro nymphing and switch to fishing a strike indicator at a distance.
    11:18 What flies do you actually need? In all honesty, you can use ANY nymph you want with a tight-line and European nymphing technique. It doesn’t matter what you fish, but your goal should be to keep your rod high and in constant ‘contact’ with the flies below. Constant contact using a straight, nearly taut line to your flies allows you to feel even the most subtle take.

    Recommended Flies
    These are listed in no particular order. I am usually fishing a size 14, 16 or 18. In larger rivers, I'm going to use a size 12, 14, or 16.
    1. Tungsten Missile: Size 12 - 18
    2. Hard Body Perdigon: Size 12 - 20
    3. Frenchie Jig: Size 12 - 18
    4. Tactical Tag Jig: Size 12 - 18
    5. Blowtorch Jig: Size 12 - 16
    6. B Smo’s Deep Purple Jig: Size 12 - 16
    7. Walt’s Worm Jig: Size 12 - 18
    8. Tungsten Woolly Bugger Jig: Size 8 - 14
    9. Worm Jigs: Size 12 - 14
    We like to use the larger size 8, 10, or 12 flies when flows are fast and deep because they are much heavier than the smaller-sized flies. In moderate flows, we tend to fish a size 14 and a size 18 on a tandem rig - fishing both at the same time. You don’t have to use euro nymphing flies for all the flies. In fact, we like to use all types of nymphs and wet flies ranging from the classic Hare’s Ear Nymph to a lightweight Partridge Soft Hackle.

    Hello, so I understand that pretty much it is all leader mono rig. What type of fly line to use? Euro level or just a Double Taper fly line?
    Thanks

      If you're designating the whole rod as your "nymphing only" fly rod, then I'd recommend getting a nymphing fly line. That way you can switch the leader out to a standard tapered leader to fish indicators. Otherwise, you could have any fly line on there - something standard like a floating line. With the euro leader being so long, I never make it into my "nymphing" fly line -- so it just sits on the reel the whole time.

    I just ordered one of your 21’ euro leaders. Do you attach it directly to your fly line or do you add a piece of mono in between?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate  2 місяці тому

      Awesome! Thank you for the order. Attach it directly to your fly line with either the loop to loop connection or a nail knot. I use loop to loop - it is faster.

    I know all rods can be pricey. What is a good but reasonably priced euro nymphing rod? What length do you recommend?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate  21 день тому +1

      The TFO euro nymphing rods would be a good option. Their warranty is hard to beat. 10.5' or 11' 3-weight is ideal.

    Around 1:08 mark, you are talking about 1 and 1.5 lengths of something fly line. Is it the rod length you are talking about?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate  Місяць тому

      I'm referring to how much line you use when casting in regards to rod length. For example, if your fly rod is 10 feet in length you'll typically use 10 to 10.5 feet of fly line for casting. Going to 20 feet is still acceptable, but it does start to make casting difficult and is best used for reaching far pools.
