How to Fly Fish for Musky: 12-Inch Flies for Giant Fish
Here's a quick how-to video with everything you need to know about fly fishing for musky! In less than 8 minutes, we will give you an understanding of where to find musky, what flies to use, gear to fish, and techniques. This was filmed earlier this year back on April 21st and April 23rd.
0:25 - Musky fly rod, gear, and full-sink setup on a 9-12 weight fly rod. Finger guards are a must for musky as it helps with a smooth retrieve.
1:23 - What flies should I use for musky. Long articulated streamers with great 'action' and tons of wild movement when stripped are preferred.
1:55 - How to fly fish for musky. What retrieve should you use and how to do a figure eight presentation.
4:45 - Behavior of musky and what to do.
5:00 - Where to find musky in rivers. Musky are ambush predators that are most commonly found in slower, flat water that is 8 - 10 feet deep. Best times to fish for musky are in the early spring before breeding and in the fall months.
6:40 - What is it really like fishing for musky. They are tough fish to catch! Nevertheless, I loved fishing for musky and plan to be back out this fall.

    Even though I have been fly fishing for musky for probably 5 years, and was lucky to get a few every year, I really enjoy watching this video. Very detailed and beautiful setting. Anyone starting this journey, this will be a valuable video to watch.

  • @EatShredSleep87
    @EatShredSleep87 2 місяці тому

    This is s shitty video with tons of misinformation. Your leader should be tapered in fact, enabling you to cast effectively with a similar technique to what you would use with a standard floating line and 9ft tapered leader. And this applies to running 20 ft of mono behind your EN specific leader or a specialized EN fly line. Also, when utilizing two flies with one on a tag dropper, the heavier fly should be on the end of the main tippet section of your leader. That is, it should be the bottom fly and the lighter fly should be on the tag dropper above. The reasoning behind this comes down to preserving contact and sensitivity. There’s more bs in this video so beware.

      @@theflycrate is it the flies and techniques that aren't as known and advanced as trout and bass fly fishing? Or is it just a smarter fish?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate 3 місяці тому

      @HalfInsaneOutdoorGuy people definitely have musky fly fishing well documented, I'd chalk it up to the fish being smarter / harder to catch. Plus there's fewer musky in the water than the fish they prey on.

    I know all rods can be pricey. What is a good but reasonably priced euro nymphing rod? What length do you recommend?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate 3 місяці тому

      The TFO euro nymphing rods would be a good option. Their warranty is hard to beat. 10.5' or 11' 3-weight is ideal.

  • @brokenk5hl131
    @brokenk5hl131 3 місяці тому

    What length of leader do you recommend? I still have trouble casting streamers and heavier flies on a 7 ft leader.

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate 3 місяці тому

      That length is good. Since it's still not casting well, it depends on the weight of your rod and how thick your tippet and or leader is. Usually, you'll want 5 or 6 weight fly rod using a 5 or 6 weight fly line. Your tippet should be at least 3x thick tippet and fly leader. I'd recommend a 0x - 3x thick. The combination of these heavier, thicker lines should roll those heavier flies over.

    a better way to connect leader to fly line is by going through the leader loop with the flyline loop. this way you dont cut into your flyline loop too much or damage it.

    How effective are these for UK fish?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate 3 місяці тому

      I haven't fished in the UK, but the behavior of fish in general would tell me that Woolly Buggers would crush trout in the UK. If you're going to tie these up, start with Olive or Black colored woolly buggers.

    Great Video. I've never tried using a squirmy worm but after watching your video I'm keen to give it a go. Should I use a strike indicator with the squirmy worm?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate 4 місяці тому

      I would start with a strike indicator when fishing a standard floating fly line, especially in higher water or if you can't wade. I only fished tight-line here because I had a euro fly leader on, which makes fishing a strike indicator difficult.

    Around 1:08 mark, you are talking about 1 and 1.5 lengths of something fly line. Is it the rod length you are talking about?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate 4 місяці тому

      I'm referring to how much line you use when casting in regards to rod length. For example, if your fly rod is 10 feet in length you'll typically use 10 to 10.5 feet of fly line for casting. Going to 20 feet is still acceptable, but it does start to make casting difficult and is best used for reaching far pools.
