      LOL.. Now Black Flies I hate... we have so many up in the Adirondacks. May and June can be BRUTAL! I had a brook trout trip I did several years ago toward the end of May they were so thick that they would even be under my sunglasses by the masses... ugh.

    Gonna be honest, the content here is great, but I feel like these videos need shorter intros and shorter talking points. I really like these videos but they seem a bit long winded.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  6 місяців тому

      I think your feedback is dead on. It’s harder to stay concise in longer videos. Each section requires hitting all the main points and with so many topics to record and prepare for it can be hard to get it all the way you want. Each section requires multiple takes. Then when editing I’m constantly trying to cut things down. I’m planning on changing things up a bit going forward to tackle individual topics and do shorter form content. It’ll help me stay focused on main points and allow me to get more videos out too. Thanks for your honest feedback. I’ve been feeling exactly the same lately.

    using a increasingly heavier point fly to reach bottom seems counterintuitive given that the action is less natural and more so because trout don't grub insects off the bottom. Using shot below the point fly in a tight-line system isn't everyone's cup of tea but it allows for the use of lighter flies and places the bottom fly several inches off the bottom, in the trout's feed zone. Also, changing shot to match changing water conditions is much easier than changing flies with various wieights.

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  11 місяців тому

      I think drop shotting is a great method honestly! I do get a lot of takes on my point fly when I go heavy but I'm also trying not to keep it "in" the bottom. I want it near the bottom but not on the bottom. If I'm getting bottom too much I'm going to get hung way to much.

    What type of tungsten beads do you use? Cyclops or slotted?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Рік тому

      It totally depends on the fly for me and the hook I use. Any jig style hook, I will use a slotted bead. For a straight shank hook like the sexi stonefly or the caddis I will use a countersunk (cyclops) bead.

I will definitely start weighing my flies, I also knew that adding additional materials with the same bead size will affect the sink rate. This was so helpful. • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Рік тому

      Thank you! High and murky means heavy and bright flies or dark flies to me. My favorite combo for those conditions are black or brown sexi stone and a pink squirmy! Then just work to find the slower seams or even the slower water under the fast water.

    Tie on a shaggy assed weighted 'fly' on a long leader and you're euro jigging. This 'method' was originally created out of necessity by folks so poor that they couldn't afford a fly line.

    is this were 3-10 weight numbers come from?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Рік тому

      I believe the numbers you're thinking of are the relative fly rod weights (generally 1wt-10wt). The larger the number on the weight of the flyrod, the larger fish it can handle. Euro rods are a little different though as the "weight" rating of the rod is more about the tip of the rod. To be honest, most people don't talk too much about the weight of the flies.

    Again an awesome vid. For me this was about flies on the bottom, what flies do you use above them?

    • @WhiteDogTrailCompany
      @WhiteDogTrailCompany  Рік тому +1

      Thanks... The only fly in the box I showed that is always on the point (bottom) is the sexi stone. All of the other flies I use on both the point and dropper at various times. The combination of the 2 flies changes for me based on water conditions.

      @@WhiteDogTrailCompany I see, what will happen if you use weightless flies? Will they drag to much and cause to much bend in your line? Just thinking out loud with no experience 🤪
