  • o Stories from the East and West Barrios recognizes the two barrio neighborhoods as a vital part of Claremont community and history. This project first developed in collaboration with community consultants John Dominguez and Lydia Henry, both residents of Arbol Verde with close ties to the community. With generous grant funding from the California Humanities, we have now conducted 13 oral histories, digitized over 300 photographs, curated a comprehensive historical exhibition, and created a short documentary film on the barrios. These materials will be made available to the public to view through the Claremont Colleges Digital Library and the Online Archive of California, where community members, researchers, and students can learn about this history through primary sources.
Special thanks to the California Humanities Foundation for a generous grant that helped make this project possible.

I'm so surprised that there aren't more thoughts shared on this thread. I was born in "57" & never heard of this. Raised in West L.A. I didn't know that we were in the States until I was 10yrs young, lol. The 1st Black Americans, were Black Latino Americans & I was almost ganged up upon, when I spoke Español with Black Americans in Junior High, lol. Rude awakening in the 7th grade. Still, it was a good time overall. Love love these pics & history. Paz be with us all 🙏. "Isa"

I lived on Mills Ave and grew up in the varrio in the 80/90s. CLARAMONTE was what we called it. The good old days are gone forever. I miss 1st Street, Lola's corner store, and El Barrio Park.

We rented a house in the 90s owned by Robert and Marie Martinez on Blanchard.
In the 70s we used to go visit Simon and Candy Baltierra which lived right across the street from where we rented in the 90s

Ah, heck. Thats how it was in los angeles also.. spanish wasn't allowed in school, but at home? Damm right we spoke spanish. Thats one thing my mother who was american married to a Mexican made it a priority we learn spanish even as it was restricted to home. I remember my brother's being pulled over for owning a new cars. Im blessed that we spoke spanish.. now its the norm. I self eduactwd myself to read and write it laster in life. We were also fortunate to live amongst the Italian community of bunker hill..
