Ah, heck. Thats how it was in los angeles also.. spanish wasn't allowed in school, but at home? Damm right we spoke spanish. Thats one thing my mother who was american married to a Mexican made it a priority we learn spanish even as it was restricted to home. I remember my brother's being pulled over for owning a new cars. Im blessed that we spoke spanish.. now its the norm. I self eduactwd myself to read and write it laster in life. We were also fortunate to live amongst the Italian community of bunker hill..

I lived in Claremont for many years and could literally envision what it looked like back then with the map in this video. Claremont has always been awesome when it comes to performing arts.

I'm so surprised that there aren't more thoughts shared on this thread. I was born in "57" & never heard of this. Raised in West L.A. I didn't know that we were in the States until I was 10yrs young, lol. The 1st Black Americans, were Black Latino Americans & I was almost ganged up upon, when I spoke Español with Black Americans in Junior High, lol. Rude awakening in the 7th grade. Yeah, a lot of people never left the barrio a lot of Hispanics Latinos, and in constantly reminding us about the barrio, you continue perpetuating a lack of progress of many of us, Latinos by focusing on the past and how they posed in pictures dressed like in the 50s and so on. It’s like that whole Lowrider street gang kind of thing going on where it’s like it’s not 1974. It’s 2024. The point of my common is that we’re constantly reminded that we can never really go beyond the bar. Therefore other Latinos that work hard through college work hard to evade all that pulls them back down to Progress and are always pulled back down and we’re given limits. That’s what this reminds me of constantly. And it’s a battle constantly to say no I don’t buy into this. I want to move ahead.

A lot of people forget that cities like Claremont, San Dimas, La Verne all had their Barrios. I grew up in "La Colonia" part of San Dimas and it seems that only we knew these small local city's real histories. Props to you for this, keep on telling our people's story!

Claremont area, Mount San Antonio is the peak to north of downtown. I filmed powwows on a grassy field on northwest corner of the campus. The town is nice, clean, mellow.

It’s imperative that you all keep your stories alive because this rich history isn’t always told nor known to others due to erasure. I’m Xikana and I grew up in Boyle Heights / Los Angeles. A few years ago my sistarz and I hosted an Indigenous Peoples Day celebration to share, educate, connect and honor the original people (Tongva) of that territory as well as all native territories and people. We all had a blast especially singing our prayers around the ceremonial drum. Unfortunately because of ignorance, fear and racism, we were not welcome back to host a second Indigenous Peoples Day. We rented a house in the 90s owned by Robert and Marie Martinez on Blanchard. In the 70s we used to go visit Simon and Candy Baltierra which lived right across the street from where we rented in the 90s

My grandparent's names were Esteban & Maria Gonzalez, 144 Berkely Ave., Claremont, CA. Then the Banuelos Sisters took care of the priest's house at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Claremont, CA.

My grandparents owned the first hotel in Claremont, 144 Berkely Ave., Claremont, CA. The Lemon packing house was right next to their home. Now, the Claremont Police Department stands.

I lived on Mills Ave and grew up in the varrio in the 80/90s. CLARAMONTE was what we called it. The good old days are gone forever. I miss 1st Street, Lola's corner store, and El Barrio Park.

Three Oaks in Walnut designed a walking and bike trail at the Northside of the expensive home development that connects with the Antonovich Trail. It would be good if the homes near the wilderness park can open up the community and develop a wilderness park through and within the gated community.

After 4months I am surprised to be the 2nd post on this video. I am a user of both Marshall Canyon and the Claremont Hills WP. I want to thank you for this beautifull and enjoyable park from me and my dog. Thank you thank you thank you!

Thanks to all those who worked so hard to save this hillside. It was hugely important to the whole region. People of all-economic levels, all ethno-racial backgrounds hike up there to recreate and protect their health. There are now 500,000 hikers up there every year. The hikers take really good care of the land. There is very little trash left behind and what is left behind by a few is picked up by others. The park is immaculate although heavily used. That shows how much the people value this park.

Chris, you are greatly missed. I was feeling like the old days, thinking of our many conversations and believing today we were having another one, only as much older guys as we would be today.
